A Witch on the Rocks #2

Witch at the End of the Tunnel

Rate this book
Vanity is the one thing Hali Waverly has never understood. That’s about to become a weakness.

Life at the Salty Cauldron is going well…right up until a body washes onto the beach. The dead woman, who is 40 years younger than her husband, had a run-in with Hali in her tiki bar the previous day. Authorities assume it was an accidental drowning, but a mark on the dead woman’s neck gives Hali pause.

Grayson Hunter finds himself in a pickle when the identity of the body becomes public. Seems he was the one hired by the victim’s husband to investigate her extra-curricular activities. Surprisingly enough, it turns out she wasn’t having an affair. That doesn’t mean she wasn’t up to something nefarious.

Crossing paths has Hali and Gray partnering up for a second time, and as tense as things are between them, things are worse when they enter the world of Selfie Planet, the victim’s place of business.

Vanity goes by many names, has many faces. The one Gray and Hali find themselves facing off with is dark and menacing. There’s more going on than selfies and rampant narcissism, however. There’s also a mirror monster and several soulless individuals walking around making things worse.

Separately, Hali and Gray are forces to be reckoned with. Together, they can handle almost anything…except maybe this.

Worlds are about to collide, and nothing will ever be the same again.

Hali and Gray are back in this second installment of the “Witch on the Rocks” series.

I would say that I enjoyed this book just as much, if not a bit more, than the first one. While the paranormal investigation wasn’t quite as “high stakes” as in the first book, the character development was fantastic. The book also ended on a touch of a cliffhanger because the paranormal bad-guy wasn’t captured, and it will probably come back to bite them in the ass at some point!

I’m having a great time with this series. Love the development between Hali and Gray. Hali’s best friend, Callie and Gray’s brother Rusty are a hilarious pair, who had much more presence in this book.

And the scene with Hali’s parents was a chuckle!! Apparently, Gray is going to have a wee get-together with Hali’s dad. That is a holdover to the next book. Should be fun and something to look forward to!!

Woah, that was not the ending I’m used to getting. It did not at all feel like that story line got wrapped up at all. It makes me all the more curious about the next book! You tricky author, you!
I am loving these characters, Hali and Grayson have perfect chemistry. They give great banter all while still looking out for each other. They manage to drive each other up the wall on purpose and give off so much tension you can feel it in your cheeks!
Not to mention the storylines, these cozy paranormal mysteries are good enough to keep my attention even without the romance. These action packed stories have plenty of magic, sleuthing and funny and sometimes dangerous accidents by Hali our not so practiced witch.
If you love cozy paranormal mysteries this is definitely a series to start reading. Don’t worry even though there are only two books out Lily Harper Hart/Amanda M. Lee is really organized and has new books coming out in every one of her series on a regular basis. She’s a rockstar!

Enjoyable magical cozy

Liked the dynamic between Hali and Gray. I think I read this one more for the progression of their relationship. The mystery and investigation were fun as a means to get the H/h working together. Hali is a strong witch and displays some skills this time. Gray is a shifter but that aspect did not come into play. Family and friends made appearances and I look forward to learning more about them in future books. I read all of the series by this author. The mystery was not really new as concepts overlapped with other series' mysteries. Still, I enjoyed the new world and characters. I look forward to the next book.

entertaining paranormal cozy mystery series

This is an entertaining paranormal cozy mystery series. A funcaster characters and an entertaining storyline. A young woman who happens to be a witch got hit by a drunk driver in a golf cart. That driver of the golf cart happen to be a very rich man who thought he could get away with anything. His assistant on the other hand or maybe it should be more his handler. Make sure that the young woman was taken care of and asked her what she wanted. She wanted a tiki bar on the man’s resort property free of charge all hers with nope no ties or responsibility to the resort. She also wanted a condo on the resort property. The handler made that happen. Keeping the very rich man out of jail as he was a lush and always getting into trouble. She now owns a tiki bar that is all hers and has a condo that is also hers free and clear. She has a knack for sticking her nose into anything going on bad that happens along the beach. She has friends and family in the area and wants to make sure nothing happens to any of them. She needs a private investigator who she first clashes with a bit and then goes and works with him to figure out what is going on. Then they separate and go separate ways and lo and behold something else happens and they are pushed back together into investigating another crime. Read on and find out what happens in this the second book in this new series. Entertaining fun with a few sparks flying as well as a few on twist.

Ooh, an arc! I honestly wasn't expecting that from this series! In book two, a woman turns up dead, apparently drowning in the sea, but witch and tiki bar owner Hali feels there's more to it than that. As does PI Gray, who is working for the dead woman's husband. There's a bunch of stuff about why vanity is bad and always looking in mirrors or taking selfies is not good for you (and not just because of the evil spirit that may reach out and grab your soul) and at the end although the mystery is solved, we're left with a wider arc, that, I assume, will play out over the remaining books.

The romance between Hali and Gray is still smouldering, but looks like it's going to catch fire imminently, aided and abetted by Gray's brother Rusty and Hali's best friend Carrie (who are both adorable, and I want a spin-off series featuring their adventures!).

For a book whose plot centred around looks and vanity, the author did very little in the way of describing her characters. I still don't have much of a picture in my mind of what either Hali or Grey look like. Even the young women at the centre of things were just described as "blondes". Also, as a forty-something, it's slightly hilarious that a twenty-nine year old woman is described as an "older protagonist". Also also, we're two books into the series and supposed shapeshifter Gray hasn't shifted shape once.

I've already got the next one in the series queued up on my Kindle though.

Hali Waverly has settled into a nice daily rhythm of running her bar, the Salty Cauldron, living with her terrible hip pain and trying to ignore her racing heart whenever Grayson Hunter is near. Grayson likewise is finding it more and more difficult to quell his feelings for Hali.
When his client's wife washes up far from alive on the beach, Hali and Grayson join forces (literally) to find out what happened to her.
Love these books so much. Well, except about halfway through, when too much body part discussion raised its head. Same happened in the first book. I could do with zero of it. Doesn't add to the story and just brings it down a notch for me.
Otherwise, the amount of cool characters brings it back up to a 5 for me, lol. Lots of different folk about!
Interesting lore approached with mirrors and the mystery behind them was great. I can see this being a Supernatural episode.
The story moved at a great clip and the details of the resort made me feel like I knew my way all around . I had no clue who was the culprit because of the layers of characters created many choices.
Look so forward to visiting the Salty Cauldron again and wiggling my toes in the sand!

Rather abruptly ended

Vacuous blondes, selfie central, mirror beings and a dead body.. Hali and Grey have plenty to work out when the 25 year old trophy wife he's supposed to be spying on for her much older and wealthier husband is found dead on the beach.

Far, however, from having an affair behind her husband's back it would appear that she's doing some kind of deal with a paranormal being and may even have been recruiting souls.

Can they get to the bottom of the weird symbol on her neck, translate the old occult book she had in her office or work out what is going on with her equally selfie obsessed friends..

By the end they will have an enemy clear and defined.. whether they can deal with it will depend, rather disappointingly, on future installments.. no real answers here

Fun Beach Read

"Vanity, vanity, all is vanity." The Bible; King Solomon
Haley is a beautiful woman, but she spends little time concerning herself with her looks. So when four young blonde girls start to annoy her regulars, ( not to mention herself), with their loud giggling, and constant selfie taking, she politely asks them to leave.
This results in a scene with the four women walking off in a huff.
The next day, one of them is found on the beach, very dead.
It looks like Gray and Haley will be working closely together again.
It remains to be seen just how closely.
Will their "hands off" policy survive all this togetherness?
Read this fun series from the start to find out!

What kind of an ending was that?

I loved the first book, so I had high hopes for this book - which were panning out - right up until the last few pages. The final scene is fine, but the conclusion of the murder mystery of this book fizzled. The tension had been slowly building throughout the book, then right when there should have been a confrontation of sorts there was pretty much nothing. So it dropped from a four-four and a half star (the chemistry between Hali and Gray is palpable) to a 3.5 because I was feeling a little cheated. Still going to grab book 3 for a read as I want to see how this plays out.

Are alligators the only danger in a swamp?

Hali and Gray are still dancing around each other but admitting they have feelings. Now a case Gray was working has turned bad after one of the annoying selfie takers Hali kicked out of the tiki bar dies. They seriously doubt it was accidental. The family is called in to help, revealing a set of monsters planning on world domination via taking over self absorbed people. Hali has lost some of her hard edges while Gray is opening up. Most of the family is goid but her Mom is annoying at times and her Dad is good at acting clueless.

This story is better than the first one, and that is saying something, because the first story was great. I still don't like cliffhangers, but this one was not so bad. It actually gave us some closure till the next book. Things are heating up between Gray and Hali and their friends and Hali's parents are getting in on it. The plot is straightforward and the premise is finding out why the very young wife of a wealthy man is dead. I most definitely recommend this book and I purchased the rest of the series.

Entertaining

Interesting story line. Selfie Planet sounds truly horrible and strangely intriguing. Would probably love to see some of the posts it would have, never want to go.
So this book seems to have introduced a (what I call) "Big Bad" an enemy that will cover multiple books. The series seems Interesting enough to see that through. So far so good and looking forward to the next book.

Fun read and series! Hali and Gray have a slow burn romance happening so look forward to that development in future books. I love Angela Clark as the narrator…and Hali’s familiar is hilarious…hope to see more of him as the series progresses.

There was a cliffhanger at the end of this one given the bad “guy’s” are still roaming the streets. It will be interesting to see what happens next and how Hali’s power develops.

Book 3 is already in my library!

Great addition

Love the direction Gray and Hali's "friendship" is going. I wonder if Wayne and Hali are ever going to come to am understanding. A war was started today, that's going to be interesting moving forward. Really enjoyed this addition to series. It's A quick read with a fun escape. Looking forward to book three once its out.

I enjoyed this book as much as the first one, but I’m not too invested in the characters yet. I like everything about this book, but I think there’s room to improve. Especially since I love every single book of this author. I can’t wait to read the next one and I’m looking forward to further interactions with the merrow.

Witch at the end of the tunnel

A good read, well thought out plots and turns.
Hali is a great character, she acts if she has a hard shell, but is soft and vulnerable.
Gray is a top guy, experiences has shaped him. He keeps a distance between himself and others.
If you enjoy cosy Mysteries you'll love this book.

Hali is so strong, I love her

A bevy of vacuous blondes, posing for selfies like Kardashians, irritates some of Hali’s customers, so she walks over to talk to the twerps. They don’t take it kindly. The next day, one of them is gone. And who shows up looking over the scene while Hali is checking out the situation …?

Good but a bit anticlimactic

Happy to see Gray and Hali back together again even if they're not "together".

Just felt as if the story dragged along and then just fizzled out. I like there is more coming but would've liked a bit more backstory rather than Martin found the information and now we're at the end so let's tie things up.

Good read

Book 2 finds Gray and Hali in the middle of a murder investigation that leads to mirror monsters and soul sucking things that control a few young women who constantly take selfies. There is humor, danger, mysteries galore, witches, magic, shifters, and their attraction builds. Highly entertaining.

Another great one

This is another great book in the series. The witches in the series aren't the usual witches with potions and such. They are more like guardians of other witches overseeing life in a beach town. I am interested on how they plan on solving the next problem, although the series could stop here.

Second step in a series

This book continues the story in a comfortable manner. The characters deepen and their world expands in this second book. It's typical LLH. No sex, lots of snark and enough paranormal activity to keep it interesting.

Cute story

This is a cute story line. There's a missing element..magic. There's few scenes and the "action" just gets spoken
about not shared. I like the characters and I think the series has potential to be really good.

Real good book for the second in a series with a lot of room to grow with the characters who we are starting to get invested in. Even though the romance seems to be a battle between the main 2 characters we find ourselves hoping that everybody including friends and siblings will find their happy ending by series end. No matter what happens it's been a great 2 book start for this series.
