Can Jameson Drake save his sister and the woman he loves?
Spencer Gordon wasn’t expecting the call from Kathleen Drake, a woman she’d spent years keeping safe as part of the Witness Protection program. The terrified woman begged Spencer for help. Taking a leave of absence from her job with Homeland Security, Spencer hurries to her friend’s side. But the threat to Kathleen is larger than Spencer bargained for, forcing a call for reinforcements. She didn’t count on being attracted to Kathleen’s arrogant, annoying, and sexy-as-hell brother.
Searching for his sister has been a driving force for businessman and multimillionaire Jameson Drake. When a woman approaches him out of the blue claiming to know where his sister is, he has no choice but to go along. He’d imagined all kinds of wild theories about what happened to Kathleen, but the truth is more shocking than even he’d ever guessed.
Forced to work together to keep Kathleen safe, Spencer strikes an uneasy alliance with Drake, wavering between wanting to shoot him, and needing to kiss him. Other than their mutual attraction, the one thing they do have in common is their desire to keep Kathleen safe. If only the mob didn’t have a different agenda.
I grew up in a house filled with books and readers. Some of my fondest memories are of reading in the same room with my mother and sisters, arguing about whose turn it was to make tea. No one wanted to put their book down! I was introduced to romance because of my mom’s habit of leaving books all over the house. One day I picked one up. I still remember the cover. It was a Harlequin by Janet Daily. Little did I know at the time that it would set the stage for my future. I went on to discover mystery novels. Agatha Christie was my favorite. And then suspense with Wilber Smith and Ian Fleming. I loved the thought of combining my favorite genres, and during high school, I attempted to write my first romantic suspense novel. I wrote the first four chapters and then exams happened and that was the end of that. I desperately hope that book died a quiet death somewhere in a computer recycling facility. A few years later, (okay, quite a few) after two degrees, a husband and two kids, I attended a workshop in Tuscany that lit that spark for writing again. I have been pounding the keyboard ever since here in New Jersey, where I live with my children—who are thrilled with my writing as it means they get to eat more pizza—and my very supportive husband.
I've really enjoyed this series! This is the fourth book in the Callahan Security Series by Lori Matthews and I've read all but I think the first book and I have enjoyed them so much! This book was no different. It kept in line with the thrilling and suspense, the spice, and it was just overall great work! I'm not sure if there's anymore to the series but these are all worth reading and this was a great addition to it!
Evade and Capture follows Spencer Gordon as she embarks on a one woman protection detail for close friend Kathleen. To help her do this, she gains the help of Kathleen's brother Jameson Drake; a billionaire businessman who has spent the last 16 years looking for his sister. Once Jameson finds his sister, he will stop at nothing to keep his family together. Spencer and Jameson have the same goal in mind, to protect their family at all costs and give them a better life but in the process they found each other. Their initial interaction was simple attraction but as things got more dangerous, they found comfort in each other. Their lives are finally being pieced back together after all these years and it just made for a really great story.
I really liked Spencer. She seemed super cool and capable. I feel like she really fit in with Callahan Security when they stepped in and I like how much she cared for Kathleen and Connor. She found the family warmth that she'd always been missing in her life so it was no wonder that she was fighting tooth and nail to save them. I really felt bad that she basically only had herself to rely on in the beginning. I really enjoyed Jameson's character also. What's not to like about a self-made millionaire businessman who seems a bit of a bad ass and sounds incredible. He really never gave up looking for his sister and he seemed like a super smart businessman the way he handled everything. I was kind of surprised by the ending in regards to Spencer's career change, she seemed so at ease working with the Callahan brothers that I thought it'd be a natural fit. But in the end her choice makes sense as well. Overall, I really enjoyed this book! Great characters, great family feel ,a sweet romance, tons of suspense and thrillingly dangerous situations. I would definitely recommend this for romance readers, especially those who enjoy a little bit of that on the run, guns blazing thrill.
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
Lori Matthews, ‘Evade and Capture’. Callahan Security Book 4.
As an Hidden Gems ARC reader I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily promised an honest review. Here it is.
Rating: 4 (of 5 stars).
In general: Suspenseful Romance.
Main characters: - Spencer Gordon. She’s an Homeland Security investigator on a leave of absence to help her friend Kathleen ‘Kate’ Drake and her son Connor who are threatened by Kate’s ex husband, a mob capo who abused her. Kathleen informed the FBI and her ex went to jail. Kate had to go in witness protection and met Spencer. They became best friends when Kate helped Spencer in a bad break up with a cheating husband.
- Jameson ‘Jamie’ Drake. Kathleen’s brother. A self-made man and now a multimillionaire businessman with hotels and resorts all over the world.
- Mitch Callahan. Ex- SEAL and ‘Jamie’s’ security specialist.
At the moment that Kate’s ex is released Spencer realizes that Kathleen and Connor are in danger of becoming entangled in a war between several mob families. Kate and Connor barely escape a new attack. So Spencer decides to approach Jameson and ask him to help her by guarding the sister who he hadn’t seen for 16 years because Kate was declared dead when she went in witness protection with a new identity. Then the author, Lori Matthews, describes how the situation around Kathleen and Connor becomes more and more dangerous because of moles in the police departments. Jameson wants to use his private security company to guard his family. Spencer hesitates to give in for she mistrust security men she doesn’t know and dislikes Jameson’s pushy behavior. But finally Spencer has to accept the help of Mitch Callahan’s Security company to beat Kate’s ex with his mob connections. It results in very suspenseful action scenes which makes the book a page turner. During all this exciting action Spencer and Jameson feel a growing physical attraction that can become more? One minor aspect: shooting Jameson when he doesn’t cooperate; isn’t Spencer’s toughness here not a bit overdone? But all in all the book had so much suspense and sweet romance that it was difficult for me to close my iPad.
If you're a fan of this series, you know Jameson Drake has never stopped searching for his sister. It's been the driving force in his life for the past sixteen years and a common, secondary thread through the first three books of this series. I was hopeful for a positive resolution to his search but, come on, it's been sixteen years, right? I couldn't figure out how Matthews was going to bring Kathleen back into his life and keep it realistic or how she would manage to pull off a happy ending for everyone once we got into the heart of the story but that's exactly what she accomplished...while keeping me on the edge of my seat, trying to figure out what would happen next, and flipping pages for all I was worth from beginning to end.
I loved how Drake's character evolved in this book, showing us a softer side along with well-hidden facets of the millionaire businessman that I never would have guessed. I wasn't sure how I felt about him in earlier books (his character really isn't fleshed out until this book) but he ended up being one of my favorite characters of the series. I didn't know what to make of Spencer at first but she won me over with her staunch loyalty to Kathleen and her kick-ass, take no prisoners attitude backed up by well-honed skills. She also is a character who evolves over the course of the book and I really enjoyed her growth from beginning to end.
If you enjoy fast-paced romantic suspense with intriguing characters, snappy dialogue, sizzling romance, breath-stealing danger, unexpected twists and turns, and guaranteed happily-ever-afters, at least for the good guys, give Lori Matthews' Evade and Capture a try. I highly recommend it.
*Evade and Capture is the fourth book in the Callahan Security series. While heroes from previous books are instrumental in this story and Drake's search for his sister is introduced early on in the series, his own story really doesn't take off until the beginning of this book. Evade and Capture can absolutely be enjoyed as a standalone.
After every book, I fall more and more in love with the Callahan Security Series. While I am admittedly biased as this most recent addition to the series takes place in my favorite destination, the characters, scenery and suspense continue to sweep me off my feet. In books one through three, author Lori Matthews deliberately kept Jameson Drake in the shadows as we were first introduced to the team protecting Drake, each of the first three books highlighted one of the Callahan brothers. However, in this newest penning, Drake is propelled to the forefront. His facial recognition software is now up and running, readers dive into Evade and Capture just as the software has pinged a match for his long-lost sister off one of his hotel’s cameras. Readers are quickly immersed in the brain of Jameson Drake, providing us a glance at what makes him tick and how he has come to create his global empire, including a brief look at his upbringing and family dynamics. Despite easily being read as a standalone, this fourth novel ties the pieces together as the software becomes functional, finally providing us a look at Drake’s motivations and raison d’etre. Matthews continues to remain a powerhouse writer, and one of my favorite suspenseful romance authors, as she constructs hot, badass men and allows the incredible, independent women to take center stage. *Disclaimer: A review copy was provided by the author. All opinions are my own.
In this intriguing suspense, danger and desire are successfully merged into one irresistible story. The manner in which the author deploys both these elements, makes her stories distinct. She delivers the kind of adrenaline-laced, passionate stories fans crave.
Homeland Security agent Spencer Gordon goes rogue when she receives the call from Kathleen—the woman she spent years protecting in the Witness Protection program. Needing reinforcement, she plans to pull in Kathleen’s brother—Jameson Drake—arrogant, annoying, and sexy as hell! Leaving her wavering between wanting to shoot him and needing to kiss him.
She refuses to make things easy for him, but realizes quickly the threat is too large for them and accepts that Drake’s security team—the Callahan brothers need to be called in. You are in for an endless adventure you can’t put down with adrenaline rushing through your veins. It has a strong plot and an enthralling storyline that kept me glued until the end. It explores love, greed, power, sacrifice, trust, and compromise.
Ms. Matthews did a lovely job of setting the scene for a thrilling read. It could be read as a stand alone adventure, but the first three set the stage for the background and you’ll just absolutely love those brothers!
I received a free ARC from Hidden Gems for the promise of an honest review.
It was good. I do recommend reading the previous books in the series because the relationships of the characters are established in them. Evade and Capture and be read as a stand-alone.
We finally get Drake’s story in Evade and Capture. Drake has been looking for his sister, Kathleen, for 16 years when someone enters one of his hotels and pretends to be Kathleen. Drake with the help of Callahan Security investigates. Drake gets a message to meet someone at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. He ends up meeting Spencer, the former US Marshal that helped hide his sister. Together Spencer and Drake set out to protect Kathleen from her ex-boyfriend who is a mobster. Spencer and Drake are attracted to each other from the start. Spencer has put her career on the line with helping Drake and Kathleen but they will not stop until everyone is safe.
You will like Spencer and Drake. I will say his sister Kathleen annoyed me a little. At the height of danger, she let Spencer, Drake and the Callahan Security handle everything while she lounged around and got massages and manicures and pedicures. I would think she would have played a bigger roll in her safety.
A thrilling romantic suspense as Spencer Gordon risks everything to save the lives of Kathleen Drake and her son Connor. Spencer realizes that she needs further support to protect them and decides to kidnap Kathleen’s brother Jameson. Jameson Drake is immensely wealthy and should be able to provide the funds and security to help protect his sister. Jameson has been under the protection of Callahan Security for years and they are known for keeping their most prominent clients safe. Although many believed that Kathleen had died sixteen years ago, Jameson continued to search for her…he felt deep in his heart that she was still alive. Can he and Spencer, with the help of the Callahan team, finally ensure that the threats to Kathleen are terminated? A wild ride that will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next. I love a strong heroine that can match wits and bravery with the alpha male and Spencer is that heroine. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. This is the first book from this series that I have read and I thought it moved along well and was written well too. The story held my interest and went off in different directions trying to achieve the main goal which was to keep Kathleen and Connor safe. I cannot imagine how life had been for them and for those that loved them, trying to keep them safe and trying to get answers, I definitely felt a connection to the characters.
There were a lot of emotions in this story and I liked how these showed the strength of some of the characters with how they dealt with and responded to said emotions. There were many good strong characters in this and I enjoyed seeing them interact with each other and I also enjoyed seeing Spencer and Drake form a connection and explore that, I liked seeing them together and wanted to read more about them and see how things were going later on down the road, I wonder if they will appear in another book in this series? I am voluntarily leaving this review after receiving an ARC from Hidden Gems.
Spencer is physically and mentally exhausted, so resisting Jamison and his sexy smile is beyond her capabilities. But she has to stand her ground and not allow him to take over, well at least when it comes to his sisters safety, however....in the bedroom? Yes please, he can take over any time he likes! Jamison once again finds himself in danger, but this time he has a sexy sidekick who frazzles his brain! They need to find the traitor, but in doing so they also uncover betrayal, deceit, cartel unrest and more than one mole...working together can they secure Kathleen's safety and find a future together? Please tell me Kathleen gets a book at some point in the future...maybe with Dragan? And all the gorgeous men at Callahan Security...do they get books too? Please, please, please? At present you have to buy this book, but it is a bargin at just 77p, however in a couple of weeks this will be available on Kindle Unlimited as the rest of the series is.
This is what most of the series has been leading up to: a tangible lead on the whereabouts of Jameson Drake’s missing sister. Spencer, and the answers he’s been seeking, are nothing like I was expecting them to be. The pairing of these two powerful Type-A personalities, so used to being in control, is very reminiscent of the second book of the series with Logan and Lacy. Spencer and Drake have both had to armor themselves in order to deal with what they do day in and day out, and I adored watching them chip away at those walls to connect. Even though we have an answer to the biggest question driving the series now, I hope this isn’t the last book in the Callahan Security series. There are still staff members that I’m curious about and would love to read their stories. I received a complimentary copy of this book through Hidden Gems Books.
Homeland Security agent Spencer Gordon has taken a leave of absence to help an old charge turned friend. Consequences from Kathleen Drake’s youthful choices have come due, one is teen, Connor and another, her ex, Joey. Kathleen’s hubris led her to criminal activity that Spencer helped her out of… or so they thought.
It’s been a long time coming but the software Jameson Drake had developed is finally paying off, after sixteen years he’s had a glimpse of what has to be his sister in one of his hotels. The Callaghan’s have to guard Drake from behind because Drake is certain he knows better this time.
Spencer becomes suspicious of her agency and workmates and stealthily contacts Drake for help but the two prove to be just as distracting for each other as they are helpful and supportive to Kathleen. Rating: 4.5stars
I love this entire series and as with all the other books in the Callahan Security series this is the perfect combination of suspense angst and drama with a very healthy does of romance thrown in to keep me turning pages as fast as I can
If you have read any of the books in this series then you know that Jameson Drake has been searching for his missing sister Kathleen and even though it has been 16 years he is finally going to get some answers He gets these through Spencer Gordon a woman who works for Homeland Security. The sparks between these two are read hot and instant but that is nothing to the fire that is about to explode as Mob families go to war Can they all survive and can he finally get the answers he deserves You will have to read to see
The mystery is solved: This book was full of action and drama and made for some exciting moments. Throughout the previous books, one of the overarching mysteries was concerning the whereabouts of Jamison Drakes sister. It was nice to get the answer to this question as well as being entertained along the way. I also enjoyed seeing the personal growth that took place in both Spencer and Jamison's lives although I didn't always connect with them as characters. Their relationship was volatile at times and I was so glad when they finally worked things out. Overall this was a fast paced, action filled book rounded out by a steamy romance. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
From the start of the Callahan Security series, their client, Jameson Drake is looking for a way to find his sister who has been missing for more than ten years. This book focuses on Jameson Drake and his continuing quest for answers about his sister. He meets Spencer Gordon, who was a former government agent, and she takes him away to help his sister who is in trouble and needs his help. The book has plenty of action and adventure as Drake and Spencer work to save his sister and themselves from this danger. **I received a free copy of this book from Hidden Gems and am voluntarily leaving a review.***
This is the 4th book I’ve read in the series and it’s just as entertaining as the others.
This book focuses on Jamison Drake that we were introduced to in book 1 who is looking for his missing sister.
Evidence suggests he’s close, but the final pieces don’t kick in until an unlikely source provides evidence he’s been waiting for.
However, all is not as it seems and the family reconnection is fraught with unimaginable circumstances.
I can’t say much more without revealing too much. I will say if you are a fan of this series, you want to read this to see what happens to the cold and calculating Jamison Drake.
Couldn't put it down! This book drew me in with the first chapter and kept me there until the very last one. When Spencer Gordon gets a terrified call from Kathleen Drake she drops everything to help her. She'd been keeping her and her son safe as part of the Witness Protection program for many years. However, it’s more than she can handle alone so she has to enlist the aid of her billionaire brother. It turns out that he’s been searching for her and her son for years and is shocked to find out where she has been and why. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
This plotline started great! I was so invested as the events unfolded. The backstories evolve and reveal the tragic and horrific past! Lori Matthew's who is a terrific writer, but she started to get carried away with the magnitude of ridiculousness! No spoilers: but the heart of the story got lost in the maelstrom of absurdity! While the story evaded my rational thoughtline, it was interesting and is worth reading, so you can laugh at the ludicrous and astonishing chapters! Hey, it's Lori's novel and I think she had some fun with it!
I have loved every book in the Callahan Security Series & Evade & Capture did not disappoint!
While each of these books can be read as a stand alone- do yourself & read them all. They are all so good & each have a different story theme.
Jamison Drake was just perfect as the aloof and tough business magnate while Spencer was a unique combination of tough as nails and a bit of a personal mess
Fantastic story!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
An action packed story. Spencer is a girl who knows how to take care of herself. Jameson is a tough as nails business man. Their worlds collide in the pursuit of protecting his sister and nephew. The Callahan brothers are also back on the job. The story will get your adrenaline pumping as you turn the pages and watch the characters try to stay ahead of danger. Watching Jamie’s heart turn to mush forSpencer will be even sweeter.
I have read Evade and Capture as a stand alone without any questions. No need for any history not given in this read. Lots of action. Lots of mystery. Mafia. A very rich alpha male. A very smart, brave alpha female. His sister, her BFF. Missing for 16 years. How will he ever find her? How can he possibly free her and her son to have normal lives. This story proves the impossible. So good. So entertaining. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from Hidden Gems.
This one was probably my least favorite of the series so far.
Spencer needs Jameson Drake’s help, but no one else can know. So she decides to kidnap - adultnap? - him.
Jameson Drake needs to find his sister. He knows something happened to her and he misses her so much.
Will he find his sister? Will he learn why she left in the first place? Will Jameson be able to fix all of the problems? Will Spencer and Jameson be able to stay away from each other?
Character I want to smack… spoiler… the sister because omg really?!?!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I was so looking forward to reading Drake's story and I wasn't disappointed. It was absolutely brilliant, thrilling from start to finish. Drake and Spencer working together along with the guys from Callahan Security to protect Drake's sister Kathleen and her son Connor. Brilliant storyline, fantastic characters and absolutely loved the HEA. Looking forward to the next book in the series and really hoping that Kathleen gets her own story, would love to know what happens to her and Connor
The romance in this book seemed rather thin. It felt like a slow, creeping story line and then, BOOM, insta-lust. I think the story would have benefited from a lengthier work up between the two main characters. I enjoyed all of the moving parts and how the author worked it all out, though. A good book overall that I am glad I read.
This book grabs you from the first paragraph and never let’s go! It’s an amazing ride seeing how far Jameson Drake has come from the first book. We learn where he comes from and how got to be, we learn his driving force. Spenser is strong and fierce and enough real woman to capture and keep his heart.
This is an entertaining suspenseful romantic series. The Callahan brothers don’t have the lead roles this time. Their client, J. Drake, takes that on. Though, the brothers are on hand to protect, especially after Drake is kidnapped by Spencer, a mysterious woman. The story revokes around family, loyalty, and friendships. The Italian NY mob play the villains.
This story is full of adventure with some mystery and drama added to the high action gun fights, kidnapping and even a high speed car chase, a scuba driver kidnapping, and a reunion with a long dead sister. Oh and in all that there is just a few bits of the Mr. Drake falling in love with his kidnapping pilot agent. It is a pretty good series.
The series is entertains and I like the characters and their interactions throughout all the stories. It means you never have to let go of the people you learn to like from the previous books. This one has strong female characters and we get to like Drake, see what makes him tick. Spencer and he work well and she’s a feisty badd ass to admire.
Another good book in the series, this one involving the mafia, Cosa Nostra, and whatever other mobs there are. Unbelievable stuff and I'm sure that at least some of it is true. Drake's wealth makes things happen effortlessly. I loved the meeting place at the graveyard with the special mourners.
I suspected that move, but there were so many others that I didn't see coming. :)
This book is different than the others that preceded it! And the action packed happenings! Wow! Could not for the life of me figure out how they we're going to do what needed to be done but the intrigue is powerful! Start at book one and continue on! You will not be disappointed! Happily intrigued!
