Georg Simmel (1858 - 1918) has long been recognized as one of the founding figures in the discipline of sociology. A contemporary of Max Weber and Emile Durkheim, he produced a wide range of sociological and other writings, including his classic work on The Philosophy of Money. The importance of Simmel's work is currently being marked in Germany by publication of a complete edition of his work. In this collection, also published as a special issue of Theory, Culture & Society (8:3), an international team of distinguished contributors reassesses Simmel's work and its relation to contemporary issues and problems in social theory. The collection also incorporates new translations of a number of Simmel's short essays. It will be of interest to scholars and students of sociology, social theory, and the history of the human sciences.
