Tomaś Martinez has had a crush on his best friend’s mother, Darcy MacFarland, for longer than he’s willing to admit.
Would it be wrong to make those feelings known the weekend of his best friend’s wedding? Or would that a big-time party foul? Tying himself up and offering up his body for her to defile wouldn’t be on his list of best man duties either, huh? What if he dropped to his knees and begged her to let him worship her in every way he fantasized about over the years? Would that be a wedding day faux pas?
Tasha did THAT! If you're looking for an age gap romance where the heroine is the older one, If She Says Yes is the answer to your prayers.
I'm forever enamored by Tasha's writing and storytelling craft. This book was a PUNCH since the start and I just couldn't stop turning pages and chapters. I wanted to know more and more how Tomás and Darcy were going to achieve their happily ever after. Tasha gives us a very comforting romance between two people who are perfect for each other. This is def a comfort read! The way this book gave me spicy, dirty talk, swoony moments, and laughs! It has everything.
I truly now want a small novella of Darcy and Tomás life in Costa Rica. PLEASE JUST A SNEAK PEEK OF WHAT THEY'RE DOING YOU KNOW ENJOYING THEIR DAYS TOGETHER.
If She Says Yes is the perfect age gap, taboo, spicy read! Perfect for reading by the pool which is what I did with a glass of wine always within arms reach. We are following Tomás, a 32 year old Mexican-American, is flying down to Charleston to be best man at his best friend’s wedding. The one and only problem? He has been lusting after said best friend’s mom since he was 19 years old. Darcy, a 55 year old Black woman, is about to say goodbye to her son as he marries the love of his life and begins his own family. That coupled with residual emotions over the loss of her cheating husband, she is struggling to find herself. She’s always been a mom and a wife. Now she’s facing how lonely she is but then there’s Tomás always dropping flirty comments and making her feel sexy and wanted. These two are practically combustible. They are fire, passion, chemistry, pheromones, and lust all rolled into one. I loved how Tomás was submissive and let Darcy take control. So HOT! Highly recommend this one to anyone who enjoys age gaps and/or taboo romances.
CW: brief mentions of past health issues concerning cancer and hysterectomy, and also death of a husband
Overall rating: 5 stars Steaminess: 4 stars (kissing, sexting, making sexy videos, masturbation, a lot of eager cunnilingus, massaging, fingering, penetrative vaginal sex, plenty of dirty talk, and even a little toe sucking)
This was sooooooo good. I had actual butterflies reading this book. Age gap. Older woman/younger man. Best friend’s mom romance. The only thing is, how did Jared end up reacting? I feel like I need to know. 😆
There's a bit of confusion where it seems like the father mentioned is dead or the parents are just divorced because someone is asked to keep the mother and father apart, but then he was dead. So for that reason I can't give this a four. It's more like a 3.5 because it's good and steamy but that father issue happens right at the beginning and made me spend more time than necessary trying to figure out what exactly was going on.
Wicked sexy! I loved how the age-gap was handled with care in this book. Tomas was 100% into Darcy and it was SO CUTE. Boy was also very horny so this whole book was a steam-fest (not complaining)!
Re-read 11/11/21. Still 5 full stars! Lawd! I need me a Tommy pls.
------------
Per.fect.ion. Damn near. One of the most enjoyable books I've read in a while.
Let's talk about all the reasons why this book should not have worked for me. So my friend tells me she's currently reading this book and describes it. Older woman, younger man. Yeah, no. I never read those. Like, ever. Then I say oh wait, I've read one..and it was good, but I really only read it because it was part of a series and I was already attached to the cast of characters. She sends me the link anyway. The guy is a sub. Eh! *Buzzer sound*. That is a NO. I know perfectly well that a man who subs to a woman isn't any less of a man; I just have less than zero interest reading about it. The guy was her son's best friend. Oh gawd, no. What the! So we're already 0 for 3. Then she says he's Latino *ears perk up*. Oh? Older black woman, younger Latino lover...Well, maybe...then I see the cover...Oh! Maybe I'll just read the sample. Two chapters later, just take my money! Which is the other thing! I do not buy books. If you're not on KU and I can't get it from a friend, it's a wrap for you, honey. I spent money on this. Ok, I had a $2 credit but still!
Ok, on to the book. When I tell you this book hit EVERY NOTE for me. The sexual tension was screen melting, every transition was perfectly done, Tomas's submission hit the perfect note for me because he wasn't all on his knees, and Mistress this, Mistress that - he never once called her Mistress - and he was very assertive outside of wanting to please her (which lots of subs are). Even with regards to her, outside of actual sex (where he liked instruction), he just seemed like a man who wanted to take care of his woman. He 'served' her, but in a way that made him seem doting, not subservient. And that reallly worked for me. It made it palatable instead of cringey. It was the essence of submission (service) without all the trappings, though I can see where people would question it. Darcy was not particularly dominant, which also worked for me but may not for traditionalists. She just seemed like a regular, older, successful black woman. She wasn't particularly assertive - she couldn't even get her dead husband's side piece to stop being rude/passive aggressive to her. She took the lead in bed because it's what he wanted, not necessarily because it came naturally to her. She was in a 'self discovery' phase though, so there's that. They just seemed pretty evenly balanced except for his desire to please her and make sure she was taken care of in every way. And, for me, it worked.
The author really lays the groundwork for the relationship by having pretty much everyone, except Darcy's son, know that Tomas has had a crush on her since he was 19yrs old. This is no fly by night fling. That man LOVED her, and has for 13yrs. I loved that he was successful in his own right. He went off and built a successful life, sans romance. The reveal of his attraction was well done. He was not shy about what he wanted and how he felt. The transition is so smooth, one minute he's pining for her and the next it's like we're cooking with gas! That man was VERBAL. Geezus! I LOVED that he called her 'hermosa'. From the beginning, he erased the 23yr age difference and treated her like he would any other woman on his level. That forced her to stop seeing him as 'Little Tommy' and acknowledge the fine ass man he'd become.
The sex is HOT!! Fire, you hear me?? And it's more than just the sex; it's everything. The tension does not let up. Tommy knows what he's about! Sis didn't know which way was up. He had her shook lol. The heat is balanced by lots of funny moments that made laugh out loud. The characters were all great, though why did it take me 83% of the book to find out Minerva I just really loved it all around.
The ending? I'm still on the fence. On one hand, it gives us a drama free close that doesn't detract from everything else that happened, and we kind of get to use our imaginations and write out own finale. It feels realistic. On the other, we don't really get full closure. I feel like we need at least a follow up short story to bring it all home.
In terms of improvement, I would just note the following re world building:
We're told that Tomas is Mexican and yet, outside of bringing tamales to a party near the end of the book, nothing more is said about this. Yes, he speaks Spanish which is great but we know literally nothing about his family. When he said he brought his mother's tamales, I was like oh, she's alive? I have seriously dragged non black authors for putting black men on the cover to promote diversity and then promptly erasing their heritage in the book itself. The white character gets the bulk of the backstory, and the black character is relegated to footnote status. Gotta keep it equal opportunity. This author gets kudos for prominently featuring Tomas's physical characteristics. We know how tall he is, his skin, hair and eye color and all of that feeds his sexiness. I've read books where the black character might as well be grayed out. What I would have liked to see is more of his backstory, some mention of family, even a phone call. We know everything about Darcy and her son, yet nothing about Tomas. Who were his parents? How did his parents feel about him staying with his friend all through his Junior and Senior years of college? What challenges did he experience as a non wealthy Mexican student among the privileged? Darcy mentions it. He is never even introspective about it. His sister shows up late in the game just so there's someone to help run the business. yet we never see him speak to her before that. He never spoke to his mother once. A Latino son?? That was my only real complaint. We didn't need a bunch of extraneous characters or conversations. Just a little something.
All in all though, I LOVED this book. It was certainly outside of my wheelhouse (I had to create new shelves for it) but definitely one I will read again...maybe next week lol.
Crushing on best friend’s mom? For over a decade? Lol, why not? Give it here!
Sexy 32 year old star architect, Tomas Martinez, has been in love with Jared’s mom, 55 year old Darcy MacFarland, since he was a college student and living under her roof. Now that he’s a full grown man and attending Jared’s wedding as best man and official mother of the groom’s escort, he’s shooting his shot. I think it’s fair to say that it landed right where he’s always wanted it to, i.e. Darcy’s bed.
Darcy is nursing some complex heartbreak—widowed by a cheating asshole, dealing with said asshole’s other wife and child, empty nest syndrome and an existential crisis. Get in line, Darcy. It’s 2022 and everyone is STILL living in a pandemic-induced hellscape. Anyway, now she’s got eager and willing Tomas to attend to her every need. Good for her!
This is an age-gap romance with some seriously hot sexy times if that’s your thing. Easy reading with a decent plot and character development for Tomas and Darcy, but their HFN ending seemed too abruptly thrown together and cliffhanger-esque. There were several important unresolved issues and a tease to read the epilogue from the author’s Patreon which was a little annoying tbh. I’m curious to find out more about the MCs but not sure I liked it enough to pay. I would’ve preferred have a proper ending (like every other book) and then an extra bonus epilogue a few years later.
This was a really sexy read. My only complaint is that I'm not a huge fan of best friend's mom (totally love age gap though) because of the annnngst. But the story itself and the hot scenes were fire
Best opening pages of any book I’ve read in a long time. Hilarious. But the windup took forever, and I had no taste for watching this woman have to put up with the woman her dead husband sired a son on, her own son not defending her to said woman, and then all “rich white men” carrying the cross her husband did. Nope, nope, and nope. But the opening scene was superb and I liked the characters until the racism.
Up to that point, about a third of the way in, we have a hero on the submissive end of the scale. Not sure why this is necessary but all books now seem to have to check in on the Fifty Shades scale.
The editing was spotty. Missing words. “I’ll drop you off at hotel.” And incorrect pronoun here:
““Darcy…” she said, making his way…”
Of the hero, the heroine says:
“Tommy was deep, philosophical, and emotionally mature in a way I’ve yet to see in men twice his age. And I know that’s a thing that people say when they want to make excuses for their attraction to a much younger person, but it really was true with Tommy.” The age difference is 21 years.
So what’s the hold up? She also seems to be digging the taboo. Honestly, should she give a shit what the same people who toss her husband’s whore in her face think? Of anything?
Her husband willed the whore his half of her business - I’d have fought that into fucking bankruptcy. But whatevs.
Too bad this book went there, I was sort of enjoying it up to the white men line. Hopefully other readers can get past that no problem.
Oh my gosh, this was so so so amazing! Age gap, older woman/younger man, best friend’s mother, submissive hero! Hot damn! I always go for the alphas myself, but this book made me see the merits of a submissive! 🥵
I really need to start listening to my reading brain. I really liked this book. It was hot and steamy and I loved how puppy like Tomás was. And you know all the other stuff: well written, good character development, etc. But…I didn’t pay attention to the tags and later on found out this was an erotica. Which sucks because I don’t too much care for eroticas and that’s on me for not reading synopsis and reviews.
I don’t usually like submissive hero’s but I ate this one up. The way he worshipped her. puhlease. This was hot. This is the first time I have read best friends mom it’s usually their dad which added a little fun to it. I liked that he just put everything out on the table. I wasn’t ready for the shower watch scene. And the laundry room. Like her watching the video during whew 😅 I didn’t realize this was a duet so I will have to pick the next one up eventually but I’m not in any rush.
TW: cheating (not between the mcs), death of a spouse in past, cancer that lead to infertility
The only time I like to read a romance where there's a significant age difference is when it's older woman/younger man. Darcy is a 55 year old widow/divorcee (not sure which happened first) and her son's best friend, 32 year old Tomas, has a huge crush on her. Tommy has been crushing on his best friend's mom since he was 19 year's old.
I initially went into this story thinking this would be a fling during the wedding weekend. Tommy would give in to his attraction and Darcy could get some much needed stress relief during the wedding weekend. I felt sorry for Darcy during most of the story. Her son is selfish? Or oblivious? I did not like Jared at all. He seemed to not care that his dad's mistress and their child (Jared's half brother) is a constant reminder to Darcy that her husband was a serial cheater. Jared was more concerned with having a relationship with his little brother and not considering how the reminder of his dad's infidelity hurts his mother. All I know is that I didn't like his ass.
I wasn't expecting a continuing relationship between Tommy and Darcy so imagine my surprise when she leaves her life in Charleston to be with him. I didn't understand the motivation cause I didn't feel like her feels for Tommy ran as deep as his feelings for her. And the fact that they were keeping it secret didn't sit well with me. Yes it could blow up in their face but Jared and everyone else are grown and living their own lives. They need to get over it. Also I wish that it was discussed more about Darcy seeking therapy to deal with her bouts of depression. Everyone around Darcy was self-centered and really treated her like crap (except for her sister James and housekeeper Minerva).
The story was enjoyable. The sex was hot. I don't think I fully believed that Darcy was into Tommy as much as he was into her.
I am kind of disappointed. Idk, maybe I went in with too big expectations, but I wanted more from the story. I felt that, while Darcy falling in love with Tomas was believeable, Tomas being in love with Darcy for 10+ years was a bit unbelieveable, because we don't get to see why he fell for her. Yes, he tells us she's kind and gracious, but mostly, I feel like he just wanted her because she was hot (that we never forget through the book).
Also, that ending was so rushed and came out of nowhere? I understand the book is now part of a duet, but when it came out it was not and, from what I read, the author didn't intend for it to be a duet... which made the ending even more anticlimatic for me personally.
Also, while I love the older woman/younger man trope, I would've liked a heads up that the male love interest is a submissive - I was shocked when that came up in the book.
There was so much pining, emotion, sweetness, and spice in this book - the perfect recipe! I truly loved both main characters and this is only the 2nd older woman/younger man book I've read and the setup, though taboo (since it's the mother of the MMC's best friend), did not feel gratuitous. Tasha is not kidding when she says that she is a "purveyor of filthy fiction with feelings." This is the best way to describe this book and I love Tomás!
Infidelity* Substance addiction discussed Weight loss mentioned Alcohol consumption Miscarriage mentioned Hysterectomy surgery recounted Protagonist with cervical cancer Death of a husband from heart attack recounted
*Context : The heroine's husband had multiple affairs, and a son with one of his mistresses.
Review to come. Strong 4-4.5 star read. I'm not normally into a lot of age gap romances, but this was both steamy and a relationship that I could root for. Darcy and Tomas's relationship had my attention from beginning to end. Read via audiobook, but I also own the ebook so I was able to experience it both ways. Looking forward to reading the follow-up.
Let’s talk about the Reverse Age Gap because why aren’t we getting more of this? I’ve read enough Daddy Doms and their Baby Girls to last me a lifetime, but give me a reluctant femdom (not a dominatrix but a mature woman who is encouraged by the mmc to take charge) and a younger guy who isn’t here for the “Mummy kink” but is just desperately obsessed with her? Yes, please. And that’s precisely why If She Says Yes hit all the right spots (pun intended) while leaving me craving just a little more.
The my son’s best friend trope? Absolutely delicious. The I’ve been obsessed with you since I was 19 energy? Even better. Tomas? An A+ younger MMC—sexy, persistent, but not a pushy brat. And our Darcy? I loved her. She was flirty without being this OTT cougar, questioning her choices without turning it into an unnecessary melodrama. What really got me, though, was how real her internal struggle felt. Usually, in this kind of dynamic, the older character is written as either hyper-controlled or oddly flippant about the whole thing—but here? She spirals in the best way, and I ate it up.
Now, let’s talk smut. It was solid, no complaints there. But here’s where I think this book could have been next-level: angst and build-up. It’s a novella, so I get that things have to move fast, but a little more will-they-won’t-they, a little more forbidden tension before things exploded? That would have been chef’s kiss. This had all the potential to be an incredibly flirty, cheeky, and tantalising slow burn before diving into the heat. Instead, we got a taste of it, then boom—smut city (I’m not mad about it, but imagine if it had just simmered a little longer).
One of my favourite things? There is no unnecessary drama. No other woman nonsense. No other man distractions. Just two people dealing with the one thing that matters: their relationship would shatter someone they both care about. That emotional weight? Loved it.
And if you’re an audiobook listener, If She Says Yes is an absolute treat. Narrated by Mari and Oscar Reyes, the dual narration really brought Darcy and Tomas to life. Their chemistry translated beautifully through the performance, capturing the heat with just the right tone. I’m also such a fan of how a Audio in Color gives indie and diverse authors the chance to be heard—literally—and every time I pick something from their production, I end up discovering a hidden gem. This one was no different.
Final verdict: A very fun, steamy read with a trope combo I need more of in my life. If it had been stretched into a duet with more tension and angst upfront it could have been perfect. But guess what? I’m already reaching for book two because I need to know what happens next.
What the fuck is up with the son of the FMC—a grown man—never defending his own mother against his father’s mistress?
And it never gets resolved? The son is still an asshole who never defends the mother who underwent cervical cancer but still had him? Who raised him and endured the mistress?
Yeah, boy bye.
Byyyyyyyyyye.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> I’m back.
This is could’ve been an interesting read.
* Older FMC x Younger MMC ✅ * Black, accomplished FMC ✅ * Latino MMC who loved FMC first ✅
But my GOD I’m let down.
This is a story all about how the FMC’s life got tripped flipped upside down. And I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there. I’ll tell you how the fucking FMC never gets her dues and how it’s not fair.
FMC is an accomplished, widowed 50s Black woman who is trying to bounce back not just from her trauma as a cancer survivor but a survivor of infidelity, empty nesting, and the death of not just her husband but what she knew as her family. She receives very little support from her son, who forces his mother to be in the presence of the mistress and never once defends her, nor is anyone woman enough to let him know he’s a fucking asshat for doing this to his mother.
MMC is a Latino 30s architect who loved the FMC when he was a mere uni student. He and the FMC’s son did see the now deceased father, but they kept quiet—ad you do. And the MMC lusted and loved the FMC for so long, yet not enough to provide evidence of her having a cheating spouse and not enough to defend her when her own son never had the guts to do.
The son begs the FMC for his nuptials to be at the family home, forcing his mother to endure the judgment of her ex MIL and her late cheating husband’s mistress, and he never defends her. Of course the mistress—Jojo—can’t do any wrong since her son—the FMC’s son’s half brother—is all the son cares for, as if his own mother doesn’t matter.
Wait she does.
He has the MMC watch his mother for the wedding because his poor mother doesn’t have a date.
🙄
Well MMC makes his move and the FMC is all for it, but age gaps are a thing and, while the FMC and MMC do like each other in and out of bed, the MMC romanticized things way too much and too soon and the FMC still needs to tackle her own issues.
But ya know.
Good thing her son still finds her not worth his time to defend.
I couldn’t handle this nor it’s sequel due to the son. The second I learned the son and the MMC knew the FMC’s late husband was a cheated but they kept quiet because it’s so “normal” for that to happen?
❌
And then the son puts his mother through being around the mistress and he wants HER to behave?
❌
Bye.
Byyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyye

08-09/2023 (paperback): As deliciously hot as the first time. Can't wait to read the next book now to finally know how they get their HEA and find the way to break the news to Jared.
10/2022 (ebook): Tomás, Tommy, Martinez is a 32 year old Mexican-American, who has been lusting after his best friend’s mom since he was 19 years old. Darcy MacFarland, is a 55 years old Black woman entrepreneur, who has always been a mom and a wife first. Now between her son getting married, and the remnant emotions over her late cheating husband, she is struggling to find herself. And Tommy is more than eager to serve her in any ways, to make her life easier.
I love age gap and this one felt so refreshing because it's between an older woman/younger man. I wish we had more stories like that, because it redefine the all patriarcal dynamic that we are way too accustomed in life and in the Romance genre. But it's evolving, thanks to the increase of queer books being published lately, among other things.
Here, we have a powerful woman, who rediscover herself and what she's capable of, and a submissive hero who is willing to show her how to embrace her own desire without feeling himself emasculate in the slightest. Because yes, being a "real man" is being able to show his feelings and his weakness. This book is really hot. The ending is more of an HFN as their relationship is not out in the open. But thankfully, the author wrote an other book, She Said Yes..., so it should answer this question.
