Where does a warrior go when the war is over?

Forged into human weapons to defend humanity against impossible odds, Sergeant Major Reverent Pelletier and the rest of the IBHU Marines and other hyper-augments are discarded by those they fought to protect.

Now that the war is over, they are deemed too dangerous to exist.

Yet, they may still prove valuable.

With two recent deadly wars against alien races, humanity needs to know what other threats are out there. Exiled from human space, they are given a new dive into the unknown depths of the galaxy and discover what else lurks in the far reaches of space.

Space is vast but full of danger. Discovering it is a near certainty, given enough time.

Survival is a different story....

After book 12, I wasn't sure what was going to happen with this entire story. With the Naxli having been destroyed by the ever quiet and always around Sia, humanity had no significant enemies. So they did what they normally do and that's turn on their own kind! For some odd and unexplainable reason, the IBHU Marines who had protected the vast civilian population through all sorts of wars were now being singled out as undesirables just because they had their modifications that made them appear different from other humans. So a small part of the population started campaigning to rid humanity of these "less than humans". In their ignorance, they wanted to eliminate all future human modification of any kind. So, the IBHU program was shut down and no more were to be put through the process.

So, Gunnery Sergeant Tomiko Pelletier was the last of the IBHUs, just barely and only because a lot of her and Sergeant Major Pelletier's friends got it done. That meant that Tomiko would be joining her husband as they were exiled by the human race. Their mission was stated along the lines of the original Star Trek mission, " To explore strange new worlds: to seek out new life and new civilizations. To go where no man has gone before". Or something along those lines. What it meant was that all the IBHU Marines, a large number of MDS karnans and 1,767 Genesians were also part of the flotilla. The Genesians had their own ship and didn't plan to intermix with the other humans. They were along to hopefully find a home planet. There was also a large contingent of scientist. As this was an exploratory mission, the scientific teams would have a large play in what was done. And actually, the person in charge of the entire mission was a civilian Chief Scientist, not the military!

Where were they going? No one was sure, but they knew they were heading way beyond known space. They would explore each system to find out if it had life and if it was technological enough to meet with the flotilla. If not, they wouldn't interfere, but discreetly observe and mark that system for future study. Then again, if they did find a highly advanced civilization, then they would attempt to make contact and gain new allies. What the role of the Marines, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Bundy, was a question that would be answered depending on these situation.

But, the first situation Reverent Pelletier found him self facing was the pending birth of his twin daughters. Tomiko was going to deliver any time now and Rev wanted to be there when it happened. Only, LTC Bundy had other plans involving the finding of a century ship called the Loman's Haven. Earth had sent out 817 of these century ships some two thousand years ago. Most had been found, most were just carrying a lot of dead colonist as they traveled through the vastness of space. Loman's Haven wasn't dead. There definitely were life forms aboard so a contingent was going to find out just who or what was there. Rev was on the away team although he hoped it didn't take too long. Little did he know that his time on the Haven was going to be longer than it should have been.

They did recover from that mission and Tomiko did have their two daughters. They were born healthy and were the immediate darlings of the entire ship. Marines getting pregnant wasn't supposed to happen. How it did with Rev and Tomiko is something you'll read about and have to form your own opinion of what Tomiko did. There was rumors aboard the ship that others were pregnant, but as of yet, there was no official comment from the leadership. The ships doctor actually was encouraging the idea of having news ones born on this ships since most of these people were never going to return to Earth!

So the next mission is on a very Earth like planet. Very green, calm weather and abundance of flora and fauna. One in particular fauna was what the ships crew came to call "buffalos" because of their uncanny resemblance to the Earth buffalo. Only these had four eyes and were present in their thousands. At first things went along pretty smooth for the landing party. They had set up a base in which to explore the planet, make observations and catalogue everything they could. But then, the buffalos became restless. No one knows why, but they were starting to cause a problem. It was up to the Sergeant Major to get it solved if he could.

This book, as you'll read is very different from previous books in that the enemy is not always who you'd expect. They're not encountering hostile aliens although there are hostiles on occasion. There will be casualties and both Rev and Tomiko are going to lose friends. But the mission must continue although where it might end, I have no idea. Oh, I also don't know what the title means for this book. They actually weren't exiled to anywhere specific and certainly not to a place called "Perdition"!

The next book in the series, "Into the Void", Book 14 will be available on/about 14 June 2023, but can be pre-ordered now. I'm waiting until it's available an then adding it to my reading list.

Good Read

Another exciting book in the series that again doesn’t disappoint! Because of their augmentations, they are outcasts from humanity. In lieu of staying and having the augmentations reversed which would result in a high probability of death. The military quickly developed a plan to excile them from human space, never to return. To do this, the military pushed through a plan to have the augmented personnel go on an exploration of their galaxy to seek out new habitual worlds, usable resources, and identify potential hostel aliens. This resulted in separate groups of augmented person from different worlds send their augments along with the initial group. This brings past friendly factions and opposing factions together along with civilian scientists and volunteers from all walks of like and beliefs. Put a civilian in charge of the expedition and the military in charge of security, what could go wrong? Some ships with civilian crews and scientists are along for a year or so. A couple of volunteer military ships could return or be recalled at anytime. Some civilians hate augmented humans and/or have diverse/eccentric beliefs. Don’t mean to be long winded, but does it seem that a very small spark might ignite this powder keg!!!

I've disliked Tomiko for several books now because she proves how her regular "badass" persona is a facade. Yes, she does some things in that category but deep down, she's amoral, selfish, and manipulative. I could understand why she cut off her arm and yes, if her trick didn't work, she could regrow it while mourning the loss of the life she had planned. As presented, she manipulated the brass into putting her on the mission but then she manipulated Rev into marrying her and then had the audacity to baby-trap him.

I lost a lot of respect for Rev at that point. I get that he was more focused on the marriage instead of just 'the big day'/wedding but Tomiko's explanation of her change of heart rang false to me - especially given her baby-trap plan. Had it played out differently, with her being left behind, she'd be a single mother living on marriage benefits and Rev would've been all for her taking all of his money as he'd have no need for it during exile.

I'm going into the next book praying for a miscarriage coz I fear that once the kids are born this series will just turn into a family drama.

Another awesome read

Honestly I cannot state how much I love this series, one of my all time favourites for sure!

Honestly I wasn’t too sure though how this series would continue after the last book, but the guys have done it again and delivered! The story was great and I loved the continued developments.

In saying this though some hopefully constructive feedback and that was that some bits seemed a little “forced” and or out of the ordinary for the characters story wise, kinda like some scenes that were thrown in just for either filler or to connect some plot points. Usually it’s pretty good and flows fairly seamlessly but there were a few specific scenes that stood out. I wont give any spoilers though because really it’s still a top tier book.

Either way I highly recommend!

The good thing about this book was that it used something other than enemy aliens trying to kill them. Without going into too much detail, it was a nice break from the routine, and it focused on the characters and how they react to new environments. It's a bit refreshing how J N Chaney worked things out for the characters, and a creative use of a trope that was only seen in Clash By Night anyway, but the use of animals instead of bipedal enemies was also something good and refreshing, as not only do the aliens want to kill you, so do the animals. I thought it was good, but I also expected it to be a bit more, and sadly, it wasn't. I'm really trying not to give away the book, but it is one of the best ones so far, though, I'll give it that.

Exile brings so many emotions

Wow, Rev & Miko sure are a Power Couple! Better together than alone, they became stronger Marines. And then some...

A great start to their new mission, filled with old friends and new ones. A well crafted story that has kept me reading along in every installment; each better than the last.

Honestly, these books never stay on my tbr for long. A big Thank You to the wonderful authors; both of who's books I have read before this series.
But this book, as a stand-alone or part of a series, has been too thrilling, with twists & turns. An enjoyable read you really shouldn't miss.

I had concerns….

I had concerns with the story arc shift after so many volumes, but the shift to exiled exploration has been well done so far. The shift was visible, but not jarring in this volume. Hopefully the new arc will expand the character development of others on this journey. Some have been launched such as Iris, but more on the fellow security combatants would be welcome. In essence, so far so good. This from a reader deeply invested in this work.

This book is problematic for me. It really feels like the author is starting to jump the shark. Instead of wrapping up the plot we're going orthogonally to the original story line.

Now don't get me wrong, the book was good once you get over the awkwardness of the change in storyline. I am a bit worried though for the viability of the series. It would be great if it gets new life but I am a bit nervous for the next books in the series

Interesting but a little disappointing.

The Authors have taken a different tact with this book. There is surprising amount of detail like the other books in the series .
However the book is sort of boring; Rev and his allies hold out against a herd of super buffalo not exciting. I feel if you have read the other books in the series you'll want and/or need to read this one also. On to book 14!

A bit disjointed

First third/half of the book seemed to be just a string on minor stories. It was not until they get to the Goldilocks planet that the primary story begins
Not a great book, not a good one, but an ok one. No real alien encounters, or fights/battles as previous books, just the fauna of the planet giving them grief
The storyline needs a big injection of excitement in future books

Another rocking tale from two great storytellers.

I have thoroughly enjoyed every book in this series, and Book 13 is no exception. Strong characterization and easy to believe military action without it being so technical as to be tedious. I highly recommend this tale and I look forward to the further adventures of Rev and Miko.

a good chapter in the storyline.

This almost seemed like maintenance for the storyline, but not in a bad way. A lot of possible storylines sort of went away with the departure from home, but I like how things are kinda developing for the exiles. Can’t wait to see the next book in the series waiting for me to download

This book goes off in a new direction from the previous books in the series.

Human worlds are blaming the enhanced soldiers and other enhanced people and most aliens for the wars and everything else. They don't want them around.

So they head out in an exploratory mission which has some difficulties that require fighting, but that isn't the main focus.

Keep it up

Really enjoying this story. Bulldozed through it like the giant buffalo on 45 did to those trees, but not so angry. Take the time and start at book 1- you won't be disappointed!

excellent addition to the ongoing story!

After dramatically defeating The Enemy, I figured the tale was told. But Mr. Chaney and Brazee redirected and restarted the series. In a well executed move, the adventure now continues into a whole new realm.

Great ending

Great ending, not a "cliffhanger" in the usual sense but a promise of better times to come. New worlds to explore. More character changes to come.

Good read

Better. Less violence, more drama. I like action but a book also needs a story. This one gives you both.

Good one. I love how the authors stole the plot for Star Trek, but in a more gritty, militaristic way.

Takes a real Turn

This is a better better, in my opinion, than its predecessor. Discovering a planet with life changes the dynamic. It was more about life than death.
