Book Six of 2026: The Ottoman Empire by Billy Wellman.
Really more of a chronology of sultans and battles than a history. Still, a decent enough overview for basic facts of the Ottoman Turkish Empire.
Two takeaways:
1. A semi-nomadic group that conquers a farming-based civilization will become that farming-based civilization in turn!
2. Nationalism is damning for multiethnic empires. A substitute ideology is crucial if such an empire wants a chance of survival. None took hold, big war came, and a 600 year old empire fell.
A note on the audiobook version: the robot (or robot-sounding) voice mispronounced several basic terms. The Michael Hibblin of audiobooks! (jk jk)
