Teenage smuggler, Armina, never intended to inherit the Blackblood, a truck loaded with illegal magical artifacts. But when tragedy strikes, leaving her in charge with only her irritable ex-girlfriend for company and with the magic-hating Huntsmen on her tail, she's determined to follow in the footsteps of her murdered Captain.
When Armina discovers a fugitive mage hiding aboard her truck, dripping their black blood, she can't ignore their pleas for help. The mage desperately wants to rescue their mother from the Huntsmen's headquarters in the Western mountains, a mission Armina knows is doomed to fail, but one she can't ignore.
As they tear across a dust bowl wasteland toward the dark spires in the west, secrets from Armina’s past come into view, lit by the blinding headlights of the roaring truck.
Secrets that could endanger the mission, the truck, and her splintering found-family.
This book is not only an absolute romp (think Mad Max meets Full Metal Alchemist) but it’s also a really interesting look at power dynamics, self reliance and grief. I adored all these characters so much and LOVE the world. Also I want to be a renegade pirate truck driver now :( time to quit my job
This book came recommended to me and my library had a copy! This was fun from start to finish and things were so neatly done, I really enjoyed it. Let’s get into it.
Characters (9): I was immediately invested in the trio of narrators (though I enjoyed some more than others). I could see the subtle ways that Sullivan created separate voices, though! It worked.
Atmosphere (9): There’s a bit of suspension of disbelief in this one as tractor trailers fit into a fantasy setting but Sullivan made it work. My chief critique is that I wish we had more of the settlement.
Writing (10): It’s not flowery or heavy handed and I liked that a lot. Like I said, the characters are all distinct and there are some very very clever reveals that weave through this story.
Plot (9): A girl on the hunt for magic artifacts finds a mage in her truck and, through betrayals and surprises, stages an uprising against local government. Classic.
Intrigue (10): This book does a great job of keeping you hooked and revealing one plot twist after another in a way that makes sense and doesn’t overwhelm you. I was so invested!
Logic/Relationships (10): I do love a found family vibe, that should be said. It was fun to follow along with all the different relationships and the way each fed into the story. No stone left unturned.
Enjoyment (10): I had a lot of fun with this book. It’s definitely more heist than fantasy, as a friend said, and while it’s not Six of Crows, it’s still well-executed. Also, I loved the world-building and its ease. Recommend, recommend, recommend.
Bought this book because a random tiktok from the author came across my fyp of everything they had read last year, and it lined up really well with what I have read/plan to read. And I thought… well if their reading tastes line up so well, their writing probably does too. And I wasn’t wrong!
I really enjoyed the world and the characters. And despite being on the shorter side for fantasy, I think the information/world building was really well balanced with the action. I think I could have easily blew through this in 2-3 days if I hadn’t been distracted by other things this month…
Only thing keeping this from 5 stars is how one pretty major reveal is treated. There’s not really much of an emotional reaction at all from Armenia before she moves on. Like she is upset, but not nearly at the level she should be. Definitely lessened the emotional blow.
A good book, though! And I look forward to more from the author.
Genuinely struggled to put this one down. This book has so many things going for it, but chief among them are the three main characters. They are so thoroughly fleshed out, by the end of the story you feel like you actually know them in real life. And the setting itself feels like one of the characters, which is huge for me (I love a unique, immersive setting). BLACKBOOD is fast-paced and honest and super queer and just a really well-written book. A++
This book is everything I look for and want in a YA fantasy. Great world building without clichés, fantastic characters and relationships without the tropes, and a plot that kept me engaged from page 1. The changing POVs help you fall in love with each character ( though you'll always have you're favorite - and it's fun to see who each reader chooses) and rounds out the narrative so well. I'm so looking forward to the next book by Kree after this!
Over all enjoyed the storyline was definately a fun adventure fantasy. Wasn’t sure about the book from the begining because it wasn’t something that is usually up my alley but decided to give it a chance. The world building was good from the descriptions of the mages to the descriptions of the huntsmen. Would definatly read a sequal if one was to happen
I LOVED THIS!!! It's got guns, swords, blood, magic, trucks, and a very diverse cast of characters. The action scenes are very clear and fun to read, the magic system is interesting, and I love the characters so much! I'd definitely recommend Blackblood for fans of found family, queer characters, and gritty action/adventure fantasy. Also the cover art is gorgeous :)
Well written with vivid descriptions and a cast of fantasy characters that draws you in. So much is happening in the story that it is hard to put the book down. An adventurous tale with a daring rescue attempt of a group who are contained and controlled simply because they exist. Lots of twists and surprises to peak your interest!
This book has queer characters, enemies to lovers, and incredible betrayal and adventure. This book switches POV’s so it can get annoying for the paragraph it takes to get you hooked on the new POV. At the end, all the POV stories came together and you could see how they related and it was just so good. Incredible storytelling and I need a book 2 (and maybe a book 3 too 😊).
I didn't know what to initially think about the book. I started to read further into the story and thought it was good but wasn't standing out. However, I was so wrong! The more I got to know the characters, the story, their motivations! I was loving every second of it! It did have me on edge a few times! I really enjoyed this book and was a pleasure to read.
