Sweater Weather #7

Absolutely Not in Love: A Sweet Hockey RomCom

Rate this book
My requirements for a man are simple. Must love books. Must NOT love hockey.

Which is why I will never be interested in my neighbor, the aloof and mysterious Felix Jamison, no matter how many books I see him hauling into his apartment. Unless he loses his pro hockey skates, I’m out.

But then he shows up at my symphony concert.

And I catch the sweet strains of Beethoven floating across the hall.

Have I mentioned how incredible he looks in his gameday suit?

Still, my history with hockey is complicated. My older brother played, and let’s just say he stole enough limelight to land a plane at midnight. I was forced to be a part of that world for so long, now that I have a choice, it’s the last thing I want.

But something tells me Felix is about to change my mind…

Absolutely Not in Love is a closed-door hockey romcom with neighbor vibes between a bookish hockey goalie and a classical cellist, with forced proximity, and all the swoony chemistry you want.

I’m not going to rate this book because it was honestly past my level of comfort at times with the romance content, but I did enjoy the overall story (and I skimmed the heavy kissing parts).

“I cannot, under any circumstances, develop a crush on my hockey-playing neighbor.”
Uh huh, sure, right, totally, whatever you say, honey bunny. *snort*

Listen, I’m not into hockey. I don’t even think I’ve seen a full three minutes of any game. Like actual minutes not stop the clock and count the clock on and off again a million times like they do in football—-do they do that in hockey? I don’t even know. But for some reason, sports romances are a guilty pleasure of mine and while I would prefer it to be baseball themed (the best sport there is, imho), I’ve read a few (“clean”) hockeys ones here and there that aren’t totally bad.

I think I honestly just really liked Felix, though. He was a comments written by a woman male lead—meaning he’s fictional, and obviously so—but his bookish, awkward nerdy self was so cute. Him and Gracie were really cute together and they had the audacity to remind me I’m single, so thanks a lot for that. 🙃 The texts were also such a fun addition to this book.

I will say that this book was 100 pages too long but that’s due to them check each other out so much and full page kisses. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m not typically a fan of the forced proximity trope, but this worked for me because it felt so domestic or like they were married, so it was cute and I love seeing that domestic bliss content without the heavy sexual implied suggestions or scenes.

Here’s that note though: there were some heavy kisses (including tongue 😬) and suggestions that made me uncomfortable at times and why I’m not rating this book. I appreciate that Gracie wanted to take things slow and they actually discussed waiting to have sex, but at the same time, it was hinted that they slept together before marriage (in the epilogue) which I find less-than-healthy to promote. I mean, there’s definitely romance books out there pushing completely unhealthy and straight-up toxic relationships, but I still don’t personally like seeing intimacy before marriage. Gracie actually comments on this kind by saying: "[I have] enough self-awareness to recognize that physical commitment only magnifies my level of emotional commitment." But waiting for marriage wasn’t brought up. Just waiting. So hmmm. 🤔

All that said, Felix was a *doll* and Gracie was really sweet. It definitely passed my level of romance tolerance, but one thing I liked is that this book leaned into the tropes and didn't have the tropes controlling the story like so many other clean rom-com books do. I would be curious to continue the other books that are to come in the Appies series, but it will be a moment of weakness on my part, haha. :)

(Rough Idea of the) Main Content-
Definitely going to say 18+ because of the heavy and detailed kisses and some conversations. Going to put some parts as spoilers to protect younger eyes on this site.

Felix comments that he hasn't given a lot of thought to life after death; A few mentions of cavemen; A couple mentions of the universe controlling things or letting things happen; A mention of mediating; A mention of some kids being demon spawned; A mention of some people worshiping Felix; A mention of church going (Gracie's mom).

Language used: 'd*mn', 'hell, 'what the hell', 'pissed', 'freaking', 'crap', along with 30+ versions of 'sexy', many versions of 'hot', and a young teen saying "Holy Shi...itake mushrooms"; Gracie and Felix both cuss but it's not written out.

Felix has social anxiety and mentions therapy often; Felix has a stained relationship with his father because his father doesn't approve of his hockey career; Gracie also has a stained relationship with her parents and felt like second fiddle--sorry, cello--next to her brother (she's put up boundaries with her parents because they never saw the real her or had an interest in her music); Mentions of hot yoga (Gracie goes, off-page); A few mentions of Harry Styles and One Direction.

Gracie drinks a few glasses of wine and gets tipsy (which leads into an embarrassing situation); Mentions of alcohol, drinking, hangovers, & bars; Mentions of injuries & blood/bleeding (up to semi-detailed).

I liked this more than I expected since a few trusted friends only gave it 3 stars!

I liked the characters and the storyline and the writing.
The sexual attraction was a bit much but also realistic I guess, so there’s that. It’s only kissing, but they talk about wanting to do it, but also wanting to go slow.
There was a lot of respect on both sides physically which I appreciated.

The characters were bookish and chill and I liked that.
Overall, I’d still recommend it as a solid clean hockey romance.

Book 2 in the Appies series and 7 in the Sweater Weather series
3.5 Stars
Blog Post: https://bookloveramanda.blogspot.com/...

This is another book in the Appies/Sweater Weather series and we follow Gracie and Felix's romance.

Read if you like:

🏒Hockey Romance Books
🏒Forced Proximity Trope
🏒Guys who Read and Love Classical Music
🏒Classical Music
🏒Cute Text Threads
🏒Neighbors to Lovers
🏒Anxiety Rep

I overall enjoyed this book but sitting with it honestly it isn't a favorite rom-com for me. I LOVED Felix's character and how he loved to read and cared for Gracie so much. I did relate to the parental things Gracie kinda went through as well so part of that was relatable. Loved seeing Gracie's Cello playing too. I love Classical music so that was an added bonus for me.

Essentially, Gracie hates hockey players and swears she will never date one after something that happened many years ago with one. Cut to meeting Felix next door and sparks fly between them. She doesn't want to let go of her "no dating hockey players" rule buttttt the more they hang out the more they start to care for one another. The rest is history.

The romance itself was clean but it does tread the line for me a bit. It wasn't explicit, don't get me wrong, but the make outs were a bit more detailed than I personally wanted to read about and the constant looking at his abs and him in his underwear thing was a bit annoying - I wanted more depth of the relationship versus those things. Also a bit more innuendos than I prefer in a rom-com. I also would have liked a bit more of the side characters involved I think.

Overall, I still enjoyed the book, as the audio narrators were very engaging and dual narrators. I think this was a perfect read for me during the week of thanksgiving right before I started all my Christmas reads too haha. Ending was sweet.

The way Jenny Proctor writes is phenomenal I love how there is no third act breakup and no miscommunication. Her stories always make me feel giddy inside. Super cute, fun and easy read. This was a clean Hockey romance, no language, only kissing (Side note: those kissing scenes were chefs kiss!)

The story focuses on the FMC who has vowed to never date a hockey player. She wants nothing to do with hockey, but when her very attractive neighbor the MMC who happens to be a hockey player starts to show her there's more to him then hockey, she starts to realize maybe hockey isn't so bad especially if it involves him.

This is book 2 of the Appies series! I love how the author references some of the characters from her other stories into this book that was a sweet addition to the story. && i must say the MMC Felix is ranking top 10 book boyfriends. He was literally such a gentleman from beginning to end!

"I'm not a child anymore. I'm a grown woman, and I really want to like Felix." As well you should Gracie!! Felix is so much more than a hockey player and if Gracie didn't want him I'd have gladly taken him even if I don't know anything about hockey and he's a fictional character. It wouldn't be the first time I fell in love with a man that only exists in a book.

I absolutely loved Gracie and Felix!! Felix is a prime example of "don't judge a book by its cover". He may be a big hockey play but he's a cinnamon roll on the inside. He listens to classical music and loves to read; add in that he's a great guy that comes with a huge heart! How could Gracie not fall in love with that?!! Picturing him sitting near the shared wall of their apartments listening to Gracie practicing her cello--can it get more swoony? Gracie is a wonderful character too but Felix stole my heart.

What I loved:
* Dual POV--I love it and can't get enough
* Opposites attract
* Close proximity
* Felix listening through the wall
* Felix replacing Gracie's ruined books
* The texting ❤️
* He falls first
* All the sweet gestures

I've read four of the seven books in the Sweater Weather series and this one might be my favorite. It's absolutely one of my favorite Jenny Proctor books so find a comfy spot, grab a snack and enjoy this delicious sweet and swoony romance!

I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts expressed in this review are my own.

Well that was a sweet mixture of sexy & sweet!

Felix was an absolute doll! I don’t think I’ve ever read a more perfect MMC. Athletic, bookish, music nerd, tall, dark, handsome, sweet, thoughtful, giving…just *chefs kiss*
And yet his people pleasing, coming from a place of needed to prove he was enough, was RELATE! ABLE!

Gracie was such a sweet FMC! She was pretty easy going, and while she was anti-hockey, she was never rude to the team. She still treated the players like human beings! She was brilliant and crazy talented.
Her frustration/anger towards the game of hockey made total sense when you see her childhood and life. And that feeling of not being chosen was hard hitting.

I loved the “enemies” (though not really) to more, plus forced proximity trope situation we had goin on in this story! The more they were around each other & the more they got to know each other the more the tension built. And then BOOM explosion and then it was just 🔥 WHEW! 🔥
But I appreciate how it wasn’t physical only! They truly loved each other’s minds & hearts.

And the “he falls first. And HHHAAARRDDD” swwwoonnnn!

I was holding my breath because it felt like it was going TOO good for them for a while and waiting for the “3rd act breakup hammer” to drop, but thankfully it didn’t. And we had a reasonable “step back and take a few days” moment that led to the sswwweettteessttt love confession!

It really was just a sweet book overall! LOVED being back with the Appies! This team is the best!

Absolutely Not in Love was a very delightful, sweet story.

Felix is a hockey player for the Appies, a minor league team. Gracie is a cellist and a music teacher. They are neighbours, but Gracie tries to avoid any contact with Felix because she despise hockey and hockey players. When a pipe broke into her apartment she accepts to share Felix's flat. Living together they know each other better, they discover some of their hidden qualities, and they start to like each other more and more as the days go by.

I've adored the characters, but I would have liked some more in depth about about them and their back stories. Still they are lovely and enjoyable, and Felix courting is endearing.

I recommend to read it if you like a nicely written slow burn, and if you're looking for an easy, quick read.

I really don't know what to say. There was literally nothing wrong with this novel. I just didn't enjoy it. Looking back, I have only ever given one book by this author a decent rating, but it was one written with Emma St. Clair. I think that Jenny's books just aren't for me.
Don't let this review discourage you from reading the book if you think that it seems interesting. I am just the odd duck out for this one.

This is my second try with this series, and I think it will be my last. "Absolutely Not in Love" has sweet moments and is an easy read, but it lacks substance and agency.

Gracie has no depth as a character, and her grudge is ridiculous. Her whole life is shaped around a six-month relationship during high school! There is nothing beyond her thinking about dating and being caught up in high school memories. She struck me as entirely bitter and pretentious.

Felix at least has more going on with his life, but I wasn't getting a sense of why he was attracted to Gracie other than her being pretty and playing the cello. Not a lot to go on.

Regarding their relationship, Gracie has a little growth and gains some self-awareness, but it's not all that impressive. Felix does the heavy lifting.

Thank you to NetGalley & the publisher for providing an eARC for review.

A hockey player hating cellist falls for the goalie next door in this delightfully swoony, dual POV, small town sports romance and the final book in this Fall's Sweater Weather series. I fell in love with Felix when we were introduced to his character in the first book and have been eagerly waiting to see him get his own HEA with Gracie ever since!!

The ultimate book boyfriend, Felix was such a thoughtful guy PLUS he loves books and classical music - something that helps bond him and Gracie. When the pipes burst in her apartment and she has to move in with Felix temporarily, she finds herself slowly falling for him despite never wanting to date a hockey player ever again.

This book had great mental health and anxiety rep, complicated family relationships, great found family and all the best Fall vibes with lots of cameos from other Harvest Hollow couples and a perfect grand gesture ending. While it works as a standalone, I still highly recommend checking out the other books in this kissing only, sweet romance series.

A very cute hockey romcom. Forced proximity, she is a cellist, he is her landlord and a minor league hockey player. I love a closed door romance; this was very sweet. There is also a minor mention of an off page character who had a surprise pregnancy in college and the hockey player quit sports to marry his girlfriend and work for his dad. I have so much respect for that and appreciate the mention. Great romance and story.

Absolutely loved this book! I've been waiting for Felix's story ever since we were introduced to him in Emma St Clair's book Just Don't Fall and Jenny has delivered!

Felix is just such a great guy! I love that he is a quiet guy who loves his books and music while being an amazing professional hockey player. I love that he has vulnerabilities like social anxiety and trying to please everyone and yet he isn't afraid of meeting those struggles head on. He seriously does the sweetest things for not only Gracie but for those he hold's dear. One person in particular...like really it will make you tear up when you get to the part.

I love Gracie for how well she and Felix compliment each other. I love that her passion is the cello and classical music. And that she has forbidden herself from ever dating or even liking a hockey player. She is a someone who has let the past define her for so long and I love that Felix is there to help her see her worth in the end. They both grow, change, and become exactly what each other were missing and didn't even realize it.

I love their talks, their banter, their flirting and chemistry and all the tension as well. I have never wanted two people to just hurry up and kiss and I swear they were feeling it right along with me! Everything was paced so well and I had to keep turning page after page until I finished it in one day! This is such a great love story and I absolutely adored it!

*You do see characters from the other Sweater Weather series as well as ones from How to Kiss a Movie Star. I loved their cameos and that even if you haven't read those books you will be fine reading this as a stand alone.*

If you want an amazing fall read that will bring the heat, the most touching moments, and just an overall read that will make you fall in love with reading all over again definitely give this one a go!

Physical intimacy Lvl 3 (Closed Door Descriptive making out)
Mild swearing (just a handful)

This was my first Jenny Proctor book. I liked the talk about books and the anxiety rep. Although it’s a closed-door book, I felt the author really toed the line. I also wasn’t the biggest fan of the ending.

In truth, I read this one to get to another in the series for a potential cleaner book swap & I can’t read books out of order!

Well, I can say that I absolutely am in love with this book! Even though it is book seven in the Sweater Weather series, I had no problem jumping in and listening to this story without having read or listened to the other books in the series first. However, I do plan to go back and read or listen to each one of those novels, too.

I am really enjoying sweet romcoms lately and especially loving the ones that have hockey as a focus. This book was the best of both of those worlds. It also introduced me to the writing of Jenny Proctor. I have been planning to try this author’s work and I had purchased some of her books because they sounded like ones I’d like. But Absolutely Not in Love is going up on my list as a favorite read this year. It is early in the year, but I know this already.

Also top on my favorites is the way this audio book was narrated. It is dual narration and both of the narrators did a wonderful job of bringing these characters to life. I already want to go back and listen to this one again and I just finished it!

I loved Gracie and Felix. They were characters who were so genuine and likeable. They also had a great deal in common and it was fun to see them connect and begin to fall in love. Their individual hang-ups were understandable, too. Felix was always going above and beyond to try to please people and Gracie was resentful of the hockey world. Both of these things related to situations and relationships in Felix and Gracie’s upbringing. I appreciated the way the author helped both of them to face these stumbling blocks that they needed to work through.

I loved this story from start to finish and highly recommend it to fans of sweet romcoms.

I received a complimentary copy of this audio book, however, I also purchased a print copy. All opinions are my own.

If you're in the mood for a sweet hockey slow burn romance with a sensitive and thoughtful hero, look no further than the final book in the sweater weather series, ABSOLUTELY NOT IN LOVE by Jenny Proctor.

I can't help but smile when reading Jenny's books, especially this one. If you read Just Don't Fall by Emma St. Clair, you were introduced to Felix. This book flows seamlessly from Just Don't Fall, but you don’t necessarily have to read it first.

The forced proximity of this one was so good. Gracie won't date a hockey player, but she finds herself living with her next-door neighbor Felix, who just happens to be the goalie for the Appies. Even though she fights it hard, Gracie can't help falling for Felix over their love of classical music and reading.

I fell for Felix right alongside Gracie. Felix is just the best. He's completely himself around Gracie and has immense depth; he's not just a hockey player. He's an avid reader, loves classical music, and is totally unabashed about his fierce crush on Gracie. He says what he means and he means what he says. His tattoo had me drooling, and when he cooked for her? Dead. Felix caring and thoughtful and I wish he was real! There was also fantastic social anxiety rep and a positive light shed on attending therapy. This people pleaser related with Felix on so many levels.

We also got little nuggets from her last book, which made my heart incredibly happy. From the very first pages to all their adorably awkward moments with each other, this couple has my heart. This was a great end to the Sweater Weather series.

This was a hard one to rate for me. 98% of the book was something I loved. Good style, good banter, the characters seemed lovable. Then the “thing that almost broke them up” happened and all I could think was, seriously?!?! There’s a true medical emergency, and he was supposed to choose her?! She’s a teacher and she didn’t understand him being there for a 13 year old kid?!?! She “needed” him, but then clearly had the resources to afford the solution without him and still blamed him?! I was so caught off guard that I then started to think back over the rest of the book. Felix gave and gave and gave. He made it clear he saw and valued Gracie. Grand gesture after grand gesture. But Gracie? She didn’t give much at all. She came off as a taker even in the friendships. Suddenly the relationship I loved from the first page was no longer appealing to me, even after Gracie’s grand gesture. I still want to read more of this author’s work, but it makes me nervous. Shouldn’t an editor have pointed out this major flaw in the storyline? It left me at the end thinking Felix deserved so much better!

Y’all, I looooved this book!

I’m totally in my hockey romance era this year, I can’t get enough of it! And 𝘼𝙗𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙉𝙤𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚 100% hit every goal for my hockey loving heart.

The audio for this book was 𝘢𝘣𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 fantastic! The narrators Amanda Stribling and Steven Molonyl made the characters come alive for me! I completely forgot I was reading, err listening. Isn’t it so magical when that happens?

And Felix Jamison…oooh Fe-lix Ja-mi-son… (fans self and pauses to catch breath) is hands down my new favorite book boyfriend. Does it get any better than a man that enjoys reading just as much as you do? Swoon.

Hockey readers, romance readers, umm all the readers, don’t miss this one!

Big thank you to @jenny for the gifted copy! I can’t wait to dive into 𝙍𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙂𝙧𝙪𝙢𝙥!

What a lovely rom-com from Jenny Proctor! This book gave me all the feels and it was the perfect ending to this series; although I am a little sad to have to leave the beautiful town of Harvest Hollow and all of its amazing fall-vibes.

Felix is a hockey player but he is not just any hockey player. He has a heart of gold and a love for books and classical music. Gracie is a symphony cellist who is Felix’s neighbor, but she will not ever date a hockey player. Or so she thinks. :) It sure makes things a little difficult on Felix who has a crush on her and is hoping to change her mind.

I fell completely in love with Felix and Gracie right away. It would be hard not to! They are both so loveable. Felix is an absolutely sweetheart and a little shy at first. Gracie is kind. I really liked how Felix’s mom reminded him that he is more than just a hockey player and Felix was so happy to show that to Gracie. I love how their love for books and music bonded them so effortlessly and gave them so much to talk about. Is it wrong that I would really like to go see Felix's library for myself? Their romance was honestly so beautiful. Felix was so tender and a perfect gentleman. The two of them had this amazing trust in each other. The text message flirting while Felix was on the road was fun and adorable, and the grand gesture at the end was just perfection. This clean hockey romance is totally bingable and an easy read. I loved every minute.

Favorite Moments

•Felix’s “You Good” comment when Gracie was dressed up
•”Talk to them like they matter”
•Felix warming Gracie’s hands
•Beauty and the Beast mention
•Felix replacing Gracie’s books
•Text message flirting
•The grand gesture

This was ADORABLE!
Such a sweet palette cleanser and this series can be read in any order. Some are connected in some ways but you can generally read them at any point.

Felix was so sweet and caring and kind and his pining after Gracie honestly was adorable. Usually it’s a bit icky but the way he just went into full fight or flight mode if something happened to her.
Gracie was so sweet too and I loved her character.
The bond they both had for certain things like music was so beautiful.

A closed door romance (Hello Appies!) between a hockey hating cellist and a goalie. I adored Felix (we met him in Emma St. Clair's book, Just Don't Fall) and the whole forced proximity/neighbor set-up. Gracie is stuck in her past hurt from her hockey obsessed family and won't give Felix the time of day. Felix is of course not your average hockey player - he loves to read, is a big fan of classical music and is just so sweet to Gracie and anyone that matters to him. He is such a caretaker and devoted to helping others.

When Gracie is forced to move in with Felix due to a pipe burst in her apartment the chemistry between the two is undeniable! Loved their banter, flirting and overall rapport. The more I see of the Appies, the more I want of this hockey team!

Okkkk so this might be one of the best romances I’ve read this year. I finished this book in one day, I just couldn’t put it down! Gracie and Felix’s chemistry felt so organic and natural. Both of their characters had so much depth and there were many heartfelt / tear jerk moments. Felix was so 🔥🥵but in a low key gentlemanly type of way which just made him even better. If you are looking for a contemporary closed door romcom that still brings the heat - look no further!

I was sent a free book and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

I still have warm fuzzies from all the cute little gestures he does for Gracie. I’d like a little piece of everything he has to offer 😜. Being a teacher, there were so many quotes from this book that I related to and it honestly made me laugh so many times at how accurately Jenny Proctor depicted the life of a teacher. I loved this books so much. The perfect depiction of what every Romcom should be. Pick this one up for a feel good, fun, and hilarious read.

…MR. DARCY? NAH. GIVE ME FELIX JAMISON.

No need to get a head injury from a slam to the glass to see stars, just delve into the sweet, awesome perfection that is Felix Jamison. You’ll be seeing stars, hearts, music notes, maybe even hear wedding bells and squeaking rocking chairs as you envision your fictional future with the hottest, hunkiest, most re”fine”d hockey player in the AHL. This man has all the right stuff. You know that list, the list of must haves. He checks every last one of them. Bookworm with a library to die for, has a deep appreciation for classical music, loves kids and volunteers his time, had a super close relationship with his Grandma. He is quiet, contemplative, giving, patient, romantic. Do I need to go on?

“That’s quite a track record. Your entire family with their minds blown?” He presses me up against the wall, and I let out a little gasp. “What’s it going to take for you to lose your mind, Gracie?”

Gracie doesn’t stand a chance! She tries, oh how she tries to hate hockey players, but the many facets of Felix wear her down. Friendly Felix, Flirting Felix, Fix-It Felix, Forgive Me Felix. Her family can’t resist him either. You’ve heard of “fan girling”, well they take it to “fan family-ing” level.

Oh how I adored this book! Logan, Felix, Eli (🤞🏻), …give me all the Appies!!
