This had snow, murder, a secluded location (boarding school on a mountaintop) and even a little Christmas! I enjoyed this book and it fit all my seasonal vibes requirements. It was a bit slow in the first third but the back two-thirds was brisk page-turner. I figured out who the killer was but I enjoyed the ride so much, it didn't detract from the story. I also liked the varied POVs this was told in. The voices were distinct and clear. The Epilogue made me wonder if there is a sequel and I think I'd be open to reading it, even if it takes place in the desert.

This book is a classic mystery - a new job, a new location, a possible murder and multiple POVs. I saw some people say they were drawn right in, but this book was slow for me, at least in the beginning.
Cassie has moved across the country from California to New York, and accepted a job as an English teacher. Falcon Ridge Academy is in the Catskill Mountains, and as winter approaches, Cassie starts wondering if she made a mistake. First, there’s the issue of having no time to go to the city. Secondly, a major winter storm has her feeling claustrophobic. Lastly, a coworker is found dead. Was it an accident, or murder?
That’s about it; this book felt a little bland to me. The story is any murder mystery, with a few variables like people in witness protection and a potential romance. We get to hear from several people involved with the academy, and then the ending gives you the answer to the mystery.
Overall, I thought this was well-written, but I could have used a bit more thrill and suspense. Many things were obvious as the book went on, which left the surprise ending with not a lot of excitement. True crime and straight mystery fans will probably enjoy this more than mystery/thriller fans; I’ve seen some really good reviews for this one, it just fell flat for me. Three stars.

i usually hate mixed perspective books but this was an exception!! it worked really well for the story and was executed perfectly. wish there had been more exploration of cassie’s background with witsec; it felt like there was a missed opportunity there. overall kept me hooked from beginning to end.

In "Head Case" by Bonnie Traymore paints a vivid picture of the novel's atmosphere and suspenseful elements. This is a well written book with strong characters in Cassie and is a thrilling story that had me on the edge of my seat. The author does a great job developing the story and building the suspense and intrigue as the story unfolds. There's enough twists and turns to keep you turning the pages. The story moves fluidly with her descriptive scenes and she delivers a fantastic read.

This was an exciting read!
Cassie is teaching at private school. It seems the perfect place to be after her breakup.

I was hooked on this one immediately.
Our protagonist works at a boarding school in New York. Admin and the board are up to something but she's minding her own business. The building is brand new but the teacher housing is in a dilapidated and non maintained old building. Her friend Kimi just died suddenly and she gets a letter from her that was sent hours before she died.
Now she is looped into some bad stuff. Kimi was going to resign and go home.
Also they replaced Kimi with a super hot guy who might be an issue.
And the director suddenly died at a school xmas concert, just to make things worse. I hate it when that happens.
Anyway, she has bad vibes so she decides to leave. She is going to drive across the country to California and move in with her parents.
But that day someone decides that she will not leave.
We also get Mile's perspective. He has been doing some stuff with the budget that will be a scandal when it gets out and also he will do prison time. He is trying to get his frenemy promoted so he can buy more time. It is not working though.
And his wife who just wants Miles to succeed so she can stay home and take care of their kid.
It gets a little coppish about midway through but I still like it.

I read this on audible. The main characters voice was sooo annoying and whiny. The story was not that great. It was very predictable.

"Head Case" by Bonnie Traymore had its moments, but it left me with mixed feelings, and I'd rate it 3 stars.
The story begins with Cassie Romano, who makes a life-altering decision to leave behind her native California and embark on a new journey as a teacher at a remote boarding school in upstate New York, all in the wake of a painful breakup. The book takes an intriguing turn with the mysterious death of a fellow teacher, Kimi, and this event sets the tone for the rest of the story.
Kimi's character is central to the plot, and her untimely demise sparks a sense of mystery and intrigue. The story kicks off with a significant twist around the halfway point, and this twist was genuinely well-executed. However, it's worth noting that this was the sole major surprise in the book. Once the identity of the killer is revealed, the plot loses some of its suspense and unpredictability.
I had high hopes for the story to maintain a sense of seclusion and suspense, akin to a small-town setting. Regrettably, the book doesn't quite sustain this atmosphere. The lack of an ongoing mystery and the early reveal of the killer's identity left me wanting more suspense and surprise.
Character development presented its challenges as well. With the exception of Cassie, it was difficult to connect with most of the characters, particularly the killer. The killer's motive felt somewhat implausible, and their uncooperative behavior made it hard to empathize with their actions and choices.
On a positive note, the use of multiple perspectives in the narrative was a sound choice, allowing readers to see the story from different angles. However, this aspect could have been executed more effectively to enhance the overall reading experience.
In conclusion, "Head Case" had a promising premise, with an intriguing character in Kimi and an initial twist that engaged the reader. However, the predictability of the plot following the revelation of the killer's identity left much to be desired. A murder mystery with other nefarious goings-on at an isolated school in the Catskill Mountains.
Cassie has just been throught a break-up, and to get away from everything and everyone, she has accepted a job as a teacher and moved from California to New York.
The school is Falcon Ridge Academy, and what she thought was a regular school with its boring routine in a far-to-reach, remote location, is anything but that. The book starts off with the murder of one of the teachers, Kimi. Though the police say that it wasn't murder, she suspects that it most definitely was.
Soon, shady stuff begins to happen, aided along by gossip that is inevitable in small towns and even smaller schools. She realises that something dangerous is afoot, and she is now in the middle of it all. The story is told in multiple POVs, so as a reader, you get a 360 degree view of what's going on.
I would have read further, but it was a DNF for me at 50%, since I was not invested in the story, didn't particularly like any of the characters, and started feeling put off by some of the events that were just not believable. I just lost interest and moved on, because the story was not riveting enough. Just overall pretty 'meh'.

This stories follows Cassie, an English teacher with a big secret. Cassie works in a boarding school with more than a few secrets of its own, when a teacher dies everything begins to unravel.
This book has multiple POV’s, which some readers may find difficult to follow. The book offers a satisfying moment when everything begins to make sense and Cassie is a very likeable character that I couldn’t help but root for. The characters in the alternate POV’s didn’t hold my attention to the same degree but those chapters offered important insights into the plot. There was a lot of scene setting at the start of the book which I really enjoyed and made for a more immersive experience.
This is a good, fast paced read for everyone, whether you’re new to thrillers/mystery’s or not.

Pictures this as a short thriller palette cleanser, and it was free on audible. I feel like the shocking twist was not that shocking. I didn’t really care about any of the characters or what they’re doing in the story. It was vaguely interesting which is why I stayed till the end.

''Head Case: A Psychological Thriller'' brings us the story of Cassie, a teacher at Falcon Ridge Academy who becomes involved in the investigation of the death of a coworker. Her obsession with finding out who killed him will take her on an adventure she will never forget. This story is captivating and has so many plot twists that until the end you will discover the truth. You will love the story if you like these types of books. The story is well-written and very organized.

A must read thriller
This is one of those books that you start reading and then cannot put down. I always like choosing psychological thrillers and this time was not the exception. Head Case is a book that drags you in from the very beginning. It has a very good narrative and well crafted scenes and characters. I absolutely recommend reading it.

Hmm… I guess it’s ok…?? Cliched, yawn-worthy, in general…
I stuck with Head Case, written by author Bonnie Traymore — I don’t even know why?
It’s not really that thrilling, & it lacks in depth.
I suppose when I’d already slogged through so much of it, giving this plot opportunity after opportunity to improve, I decided to at least see if there was any payoff at the end.
(No spoilers — ever!!…)
The concluding chapters are the most exciting, well-crafted & creative, of this whole tale. So I definitely enjoyed the revealing of the whodunnit aspect.
Other than that — if given reading 20/20 vision, I’d have not of bothered with this overly long plot. It would be so much better if edited to tighten it all up into a short story.
It’s like — (for you bakers or baking-minded out there) — you put together an entire recipe for some complex cupcakes. With the promise of the perfection to come.
In the end, you wind up with 1/2 of one single delicious cupcake, the other 23 & 1/2 absolutely unnecessary. ESPECIALLY due to their being over baked, not crafted well at all, & with WAY too much hype promising the full 2 dozen worth of perfection.
A disappointment all around.
Only giving 3 Stars instead of 1 Star due to the fact I hung in there, start to finish. So there must be *something* worth at least a bit of praise.
I’d absolutely give it a pass, if I could choose my next read over again.

I really really wanted to like this book after reading the summary and was excited to start it. The book however was just very boring for me. Cassie has a job at a private school in the Catskills and it sounds like something that could turn into a creepy murder mystery with lots of creepy atmosphere with a snowstorm. It is anything but that. There wasn’t much mystery at all. The killer is revealed about halfway through the book so there isn’t much surprise at all.
Just not what I was expecting and I kind of had to force myself to finish it even though by the middle I had a pretty good idea of how the ending would turn out.
Not for me at all.

Cassie Romano left San Diego to escape a breakup and ended up pretty much as far away as she could, since she didn’t want to have to go back to her parents home to stay. She got a position at a remote boarding school in the Catskill Mountains, in upstate New York, teaching English at Falcon Ridge Academy. But she can sense that something is wrong! Her only friend was Kimi Choy, another young teacher, who lived on the floor below her, in the grotty teaching staff accommodation block, but who supposedly died in an accident. She also can’t get used to the cold weather and is thinking of leaving during the Christmas break. She hates that she had listened to other staff who warned her off being too friendly to Kimi, as they said she tells the Dean of Faculty, Brooke Baxter, everything that anyone says about her or any other gossip in the school! She had pulled back from her in recent weeks and ignored a message on her phone form her, the day she died and is feeling guilty about this. When a letter comes addressed to her from the dead woman, she realises something else was clearly going on and wonders if the death really an accident like the police stated!
There is lots going on in the backgrounds of the characters in the story, with Cassie having a past she must always keep hidden and maybe is the reason she can’t get close to anyone. One of the members of the school council has been embezzling funds form the school but hopes for another dodgy grant to the school to be able to pay it back, so no one will notice. Brooke has her own issues, seeming to be having an affair with that person, but in fact found out about it and threatened to blackmail them if she wasn’t cut into it. Cassie isn’t sure who she can trust, and a sudden promotion and a new teacher brought in before the holidays all adds to the sense of something going on. Cassie loves reading mysteries and can’t help herself wanting to look into Kemi’s death and what else might be going on in the school, even though she knows she should just stick in the background and keep quiet! She had it ingrained in her not to make a fuss or get noticed and could be placing herself in danger by being so nosy. Needing money to get into a new place to live and work after her time at the boarding school, she ends up stuck there and left with odd feelings that she is being watched. The promotion will help her apply for a new job and she can’t make a bad impression with Brooke, as she will be the one to write her recommendation. But she is a hard woman to like or even get to know. Her promotion brings a request to stay at the school over the holidays with any boarders not going home and they are soon struck with a huge storm, that isolates everyone at the school. Most of the action happens at the end, during this storm, with some surprising revelations that come with a bit of a shock. There is far more than just the death of Kemi being looked into, with a number of different agencies involved. A person from one which allows Cassie to finally talk a little about her past and possibly have a new relationship begin.

Suspecting foul play despite others dismissing it as an accident, she is compelled to investigate.
The narrative employs multiple points of view, aiming to delve into the intricacies of character motivations. However, the story doesn't hinge on its cast, a trait not uncommon or problematic for murder mysteries. Yet, the limited exploration of character depth hindered my grasp of their motivations, with the murder motive appearing somewhat unconvincing.
Surprisingly, the novel struggled to captivate me for an unexpected reason. The setting, an isolated mountain school, held promising potential. Yet, it failed to evoke the anticipated tension. The inherently ominous atmosphere, intensified by a snowstorm rendering the premises even more secluded, didn't translate into a palpable sense of suspense in the narrative. The absence of suspense makes the book seem longer than it is.
Traymore tips her hand midway by unveiling certain details. This move would allow genre-savvy readers to connect major puzzle pieces, including the murderer's identity. Consequently, the final revelation lacks the element of surprise and fails to deliver an impactful punch. Despite this drawback, the concluding chapters exhibit adept craftsmanship, neatly tying up the narrative without leaving any loose threads and bringing the story to a satisfying resolution.
Despite its shortcomings in developing characters and generating suspense, Head Case might find its niche among readers who revel in sinister settings. The portrayal of an ominous mountain school offers a backdrop that could captivate those who appreciate the atmospheric aspects of murder mysteries.

After a bad breakup, Cassie makes the rash decision to take a teaching position across the country at an isolated boarding school in the Catskills. Everything goes smoothly, if a bit boring, until about two weeks before winter break, when a fellow teacher and former friend of Cassie’s, is found dead. Oh, and she mailed an ominous message to Cassie the day she died. As tensions on campus escalate, Cassie doesn’t know who she can trust or how long she’s safe staying at the school as a storm bears down on the campus.
The story is told from the POVs of various characters, all in the present timeline, as the story unfolds.
I really think the premise of this book was good; any kind of remote boarding school mystery catches my attention. And there were some nice aspects here. The description of the scenery and setting really drew me in, and there was a bit of suspense waiting to figure out how everything was going to all play out. There were some twists in there at the beginning that I didn’t see coming, which kept me reading.
But then there were a couple of things that kind of threw me off track. I wasn’t really into the romance aspect of the book, it felt kind of thrown in. And it also felt like the book was about 70 pages too long - the killer and their plan/motive was revealed relatively early, and then there really weren’t any other twists after that. So, by that time, I was pretty much done.
So I’m kind of half-and-half with this one. It’s not bad, but it’s not great. It’s a three star.

Bonnie Traymore's Head Case takes listeners to an isolated private school in the Catskill Mountains. The school suffers Kim Choy’s death and the close call of another faculty member. The vivid descriptions of the old building used for staff quarters help ramp up the suspenseful elements from start to finish. Students, teachers, and events are realistic and relatable.
Cassie, the protagonist, is an English teacher who was close to Kim and recently came to the school to begin anew following a broken relationship. The secrets in her background sprinkled throughout the story define the framework for her viewpoint when sharing the events. Her life has not been easy and trust is a huge roadblock. There are delightful supporting characters like Ed and Dan.
Various story threads get succinctly related from the clearly defined multiple points of view. When students go home for the holidays and return to an advancing epic winter snowstorm, the killer decides to take matters into their own hands. The tension is heightened at a frantic pace until the unexpected conclusion.
Robin McAlpine masterfully delivered her stellar voice acting to bring depth and broadness to the story. There were no problems with the quality of this audiobook, complimented by the perfect pace and style of professional narration.

So, she is already re-thinking the wisdom of her decision when something really terrible happens. One of the teachers is found dead. And while everyone else seems to view this as nothing more than a tragic accident, the letter that Cassie receives from the woman indicates otherwise.
The contents of the missive are somewhat mysterious, but the fact that it was written shortly before her death gives Cassie cause for concern. But she has good reasons for not wanting to get too involved. Because Cassie has her own secrets to protect...

An entertaining thriller with occasional surprising twists. After a broken relationship, Cassie takes a job as an English teacher at a boarding school in remote rural New York. The atmosphere and the cold there already make her regret coming here, but after the unexpected death of a colleague she feels less and less comfortable there. Tensions between colleagues, a new, much too handsome teacher who turns out to be bad at teaching, things just don't seem right. And while it would be better for Cassie not to delve into anything, given her past, she can't resist the temptation to investigate.
Although I found it to be a pleasantly readable and entertaining book, there were also negative points.
I had to get used to the writing style, which was somewhat distant, so that Cassie's feelings were not really palpable. This way I didn't get the idea that her break up and the reaction to the death of colleague Kimy were really that bad. Furthermore, I found the developments too abrupt, the reader is not taken into the train of thought, but is presented with the conclusions. I don't find it logical at all why Cassie thinks certain things are wrong.
What I did like is the oppressive atmosphere that the author manages to portray, the twists and turns that the author introduces and the different perspectives from which the author writes. For me the story is between ok and good, 3.5 stars.

A boarding school teacher dead. It was an accident. Wasn’t it?
In the beginning, we get a slow diary narrative from one of the school teachers, Cassie, a friend that pretty much abandoned the dead teacher in the end. Then she gets a little “from beyond the grave” letter, telling her to watch her back at the school. It would seem there have been some dirty dealings at the school administration and people had secrets they wanted to keep hidden, including Cassie. Would someone really resort to murder though?
Cassie was sure that there was a campus murderer on the loose and would be watchful from now on. Could the hunky, new teacher be involved? Cassie couldn’t decide “if [this was] the beginning of a steamy romance novel or the opening scene of a slasher movie.”
This gets better with all the mysterious speculation and the possibility of a murderer. It definitely grabs and holds your interest.
Meanwhile, Cassie is dealing with some issues concerning her dad getting them all into witness protection when she was younger.
There’s a conspiracy at the private school and certain people were in on it either to cover it up or bring it down. How will this all end? And who murdered the teacher?
A compelling read that kept me going.

Kimi is excited to have a new position at a finishing school in the mountains of central New York. She is a little uneasy about the competition for the coveted position of Headmaster.
Teaching summer classes is always a pain. The students are less than motivated and some of them are here learning English as a second language. The passing of Kimi puts everyone on edge. “Was it an accident”?
Compensation is good for the position and housing and food are supplied to the educators. Cassie hates the winters in upstate New York and will leave at winter break but being one of the newer teachers is stuck with students who cannot go home for break.
This tale embraces the politics of a small teaching institution that caters to the very rich and foreign students. The characters are well developed and the plot simple but tragic. Avarice is a terrible taskmaster. Mix that with a mental condition and you have the ingredients for an interesting and heartrending tale. 4.5 stars - CE Williams

What a great read! Ms. Traymore's talents shine through once again in this gripping tale of intrigue and suspense. Enticingly, she brings the story to life with her slow-burn style. Yet it is the smooth and inviting command of her characters--I love the duel perspective, the narrative from opposing forces--that lured me deep into her twisted world. Cassi and Miles (Traymore's main characters) are very realistic. I especially liked her little snippets of Cassie being an English teacher ("I'm fine"), knowing instinctively when another of the characters was not who they said they were. The storyline is not far off the believable path; intricate in places, but smooth and professionally executed just the same. I truly love fiction to being just over the line but not too far. From the onset, I definitely felt for Cassie, bonded, shall we say, for she works in a field where rumors abound and the struggles for advancement always supersede friendship--though perhaps not as much as in this novel! Yes, Traymore has definitely woven a tantalizing tale that played upon my mind long after turning the last page.

At first, I was worried I would be incredibly annoyed with Cassie's selfishness for the entirety of this ebook but I was pleasantly surprised with how captivating the twists and plotting turned out to be. I particularly appreciated the various character perspectives of Cassie, Miles and Madeline because it was organized very well and relevant in every instance. The pacing and the main thread of the story continued seamlessly and I didn't have to jump around to clarify important aspects. It was crystal clear whose perspective I was reading, as each of the characters had a distinct voice.
I unexpectedly zoomed right through the latter half of the book because the suspense was that good! I really appreciate a surprise binge read.

Princess Fuzzypants here: After a painful breakup, Cassie impulsively takes a teaching job in a remote school in The Catskills. The California girl is having problems with the cold and the isolation but it is nothing to compare with what happens after one of the other teachers is murdered. The woman had reached out to Cassie beforehand and she feels obligated to see she receives justice. But there are weird things afoot in the school. Normal competition and rivalries aside, there is something decidedly wrong going on and it appears to involves some of the movers and shakers at the school. Exactly what is uncertain but there are some shady characters.
Cassie, herself, has lots of secrets. Secrets that could doom her and her family. It is the one thing that jars a bit when she decides to investigate. She soon discovers she has unexpected allies but where the story really takes a big turn is when the reader twigs to the fact that the real monster in all of this is hiding in plain sight. It was a delightful twist that adds greatly to the overall enjoyment of the book.
Four purrs and two paws up.

Meanwhile, Cassie has secrets that she’s harbored since she was a child, which makes her reluctant to get involved.
Head Case is told from the perspective of several characters. This aspect of the book is very well-done and I enjoyed moving between them. Cassie is a sympathetic character although she makes a few odd decisions (after all, she’s still quite young). There wasn’t a lot of build-up or maintained suspense in this book, but it is well-written and plotted. The epilogue wrapped it all up, although some details could have gone unsaid and left to the reader’s imagination. Still, it was nice to read a book that really did finish the story.
