It Was a Puzzle...

DEAD BODY DISPOSAL
by Jon Athan

2 1/2 stars. Max Baker frantically called his best friend John Kasper from his hotel room...

Come quickly!

When Kasper arrived, Max pointed under the bed where a dead prostitute was stashed and asked his stupefied friend...

Please, can you help me get rid of her?

Max was about to become a father, and he didn't want to throw everything away for a lapse in judgment...

A mistake...

Kasper was willing to help his good friend, but he didn't want to get involved beyond suggesting what Max should do next...

What Kasper didn't know...

Max didn't hire the woman for sex. He'd hired her so that he could fulfill his dream of murdering someone...

It was a puzzle...

The door to the room was the only exit, and they were on the 29th floor. And there were security cameras in the halls, stairwells and elevators...

Could the two fellas solve it?

This story started off good, and I was immediately hooked, but early on, I knew the big reveal, and from that point on, there was a lot of repetition. I found myself skimming from about halfway through just to verify that I was correct (I was). It probably would've been more successful as a short story or novella.

My very first job was as a desk clerk at a busy LAX hotel, so from that bird's eye view, I saw waaaay too many holes in this story, which had me squirming. Also, from my later law enforcement background, I saw even more holes.

This author usually puts out some great novels, but this one wasn't for me. BTW, very interesting name the author chose for the best friend, lol!

This book made me so squeamish. Just a barrage of violence and gore, pulling absolutely no stops in making the journey to prevent you from eating. In a nutshell, the story follows Max who invites a hooker to his hotel room. No, no, no it wasn’t for sex. His intentions were much darker. And who better to help him clean up the evidence, but his best friend Kasper. We follow these two bumbling, aspiring psychopaths as they try to get themselves out of quite the dilly of a pickle. But the story is very straightforward and so over-the-top gross, that I advise anyone thinking of reading it to be fully prepared for its content. By far one of the nastiest things that I’ve read in some time. So the story has a twist at the end, which you could see miles away, but it didn’t take anything away from the plot. Also, on the ending, it felt a bit abbreviated and abrupt, and could have used one more chapter to wrap everything up. But if you like something about half a step from being a full blown splatterpunk-fest, this us for you.

Let’s start off with the most important thing – before you start the story:
If you think this book is going to be like that underrated classic movie VERY BAD THINGS, you are completely, utterly wrong. There is no humor to be found between these pages.

To give an objective review without spoilers, I need to break this down into three parts:

The first part is visual and technical. As a norm, this author’s covers for his books are almost always impressive and gets the attention of the market it is catering for. This one lives up to the usual high standards.
Technically, the editing, grammar, pacing and flow is very well done. I can’t fault Mr. Athan on anything in those departments.

The second part is the extreme part for which this author is also known. Does it live up to the gory, gruesome, violent and depraved expectancy? Yes, it does. It lives up to the warnings – things get truly MESSED up (you have no idea how proud I am of myself for not using the f- word!) in this story. For those readers who values the story for how ‘wrong’ things can get, this one will not disappoint.

The third (and hardest) part is the story itself. In short, this is what the story is about:
Max Baker kills a prostitute in a hotel room on the 29th floor. Panicked, he phones John Kasper, his friend, to come and help him. Without wanting to get physically involved, Kasper tries to help him with his biggest problem…how to get rid of the body.

Everything seemed to fall apart from early on in the story. It seems like this tale has more holes than Wolverine’s boxing gloves. I will attempt to ask the following without giving too much away.
• The relationship between Max and John seems to differ from chapter to chapter. Max sees him as a good enough friend to help him in the situation, yet thinks of him as dispensable. They’ve known each other from childhood, yet he mentions later on that they are no that close, and then later refers to him as his best friend.
• Max goes to the hotel with the specific intent of killing a prostitute – even though he doesn’t know if he can go through with it. Yet, he books in under his real name, with all his information and credit cards on record, and calls a prostitute who may or may not have told somebody where she was going to meet her client.
• Again, with murder in mind, he makes absolutely no plans for what happens afterward – which shows a completely disorganized killer mindset – yet he is an accountant (look at the personality type) and he makes enough plans to get away from his fiancé for the night and to lure a prostitute for the deed, which shows planning. But he never thinks about getting away with it?
• He panics when the deed is done and calls his friend for help, but as he mentions throughout the story, there has been dreams of violence and murder, some urge toward it, yet he is not coming across as a psychopath – feeling guilt and empathy for his victim, yet still going through with some horrendous actions any normal person wouldn’t be able to stomach.
• The plans they make – as true crime and horror fans – is completely disproportionate to the knowledge they share. They dismiss the simplest, possibly ‘sanest’ way to go about it with a very flimsy excuse, and some of the things they attempt from there is beyond ridiculous.
• If there was supposed to be a twist at the end – you will know exactly what I’m talking about if you read this - I figured it out at about 23% into the story.

It saddens me to say the story line was below par for this author, and it is my personal feeling that he adjusted the actions and reactions toward the story, rather than letting the story lead him toward a more believable outcome.

Since the story is always more important than the splatter for me, I feel generous in giving this one two and a half stars.

Oh, yes, at the end of the story the author asks what you would have done to get rid of the body.
Very simple, sir, you need binoculars, tweezers and an empty box of matches. When the deed is done, simply turn the binoculars around so you look into them from the wrong way, which will make the body much, much smaller. Then you take the tweezers and gently put the dead girl into the matchbox. Simple, really.
Of course, when you leave, you will need a wood chipper (a la FARGO), but at least you’re out of the hotel.

This is the third book I read by this author and it is very different from the first two.

The first two were other were rather extremely going from one gory to the next, where did this one focuses on more or less one death. That’s what makes this book special. It is very character. Focus and allows. you to linger in the moment, I feel the full gravity of the situation as it gets at from every possible angle.

It a much more intimate to read than what I’m used to from this author, and I loved it. Well I really enjoy his more extreme horror work it’s nice to mix up a bit. And this book cruise that this is a well rounded whore offer. That is well worth reason multiple books of.

My eyeballs are burning. This is a very disturbing book, knocking all the trigger warnings you can think of down. I did skip a few chapters as I couldn't stomach it.
Yes, I have a dark mind, I test the limits of my reading and I force myself to finish books as I don't like dnf'ing. This was a close call and would it warrant 4 stars?? As its fiction and marked as Splatterpunk I would assume readers know what they are getting into picking this one up. A good plot which kept me on the edge. The gore...phew glad its over!

Max Baker has found himself in the position where he has killed a prostitute in his hotel room. I mean you know things like this happens from time to time. Lucky for him he has a long time friend, John Kasper, to help. What follows is the craziest story of two people trying to get rid of a body I have ever read. Packed with twists and turns you never know what is going to happen next. Very good read.

Overflowing gore

I always know that I'm in for a good exciting bountiful, extreme story when I read anything from Jon Athan. And this was no exception. It was packed full of brutal violence and blood lust. That's not all though, all g with all this comes a great storyline that you wouldn't think of doing. With fantastic characters. I loved how Max didn't see it and was just going from bad to worse. All the time thinking he was helping. And always a great twist with it all too. I love reading Jon's books and always look out for the next to come out. I definitely recommend if you love the extreme horror. But I don't advise you if you are easily offended or squeamish. But what a great book and shame to miss out on a great author.

Gory, Intense, and Stomach Churning Horror!

I have raved on how Jon Athan is my favorite Splatterpunk/horror author for quite some time now. I was absolutely jonesing for a read to kick off my year, and what better way than to pick up his latest work Dead Body Disposal? I love many Splatterpunk authors, but I have to have a favorite, and Jon Athan takes the cake. He gets down and dirty with the details, very in depth and well researched anatomically, and tries to keep many aspects of his novels with a sense of believability. As Negan from The Walking Dead would say, “I love that!” Without further adieu here is my review of Dead Body Disposal by Jon Athan.

This story takes place on the twenty-ninth story of a hotel. Max has an escort come up to his room. Which of course he has vile intentions, but his humanity gets in the way and makes him rethink things until he comes to a final decision.

After he makes his move he realizes he is at a loss, panics, and calls his friend John Kasper to come and give him aid and advice. Max and Kasper begin to brainstorm how on earth they are to get the dead body out of the hotel. Kasper really has the brains, and Max is loosing it a bit. Kasper barely holds Max together, and advises him on some ideas. The race against checkout is on, and Max has to get this body out so he can get back to his fiancé Angela who is pregnant with his child. Will he succeed? Will he get caught? Will he lose his mind? Or will he simply give up and turn himself in?

Okay, I began reading Dead Body Disposal, and I reached Max killing his escort. I didn’t find it that disturbing. That is not to say it was not violent. There are not any sexual depraved scenes in this novel for those of you who do not enjoy them. However, I got to a point where I was thinking, “that’s it? This isn’t like the Jon Athan I absolutely love!” I was a little disappointed. That was not for long! Chapter 6 onward I was completely on a rollercoaster ride from Hades! That chapter absolutely churned my stomach! From that chapter on Jon delivers a story that had me literally talking to the book out loud! “Why would you do that?” “You are such an idiot!” “That is never going to work! Don’t try it!” “You are wasting time”. This is not to say I was on Max’s side. I most certainly was NOT! However, the book had me on the edge of my seat, and actually anxious, disturbed, grossed out, appalled, and I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! Every single thing I want out of, and love dearly about Jon Athan’s writing!

Before I rate this book I wanted to state something that has been really bothering me. I absolutely love many many independent authors. Yes, Jon Athan is my favorite, followed closely by Carver Pike, and I could go on. With that said these authors are all very very different, and I love that! I absolutely HATE when people compare independent authors to their peers who are currently writing. Okay, compare them to greats like Ketchum (Athan) or Laymon, Barker, Wrath James White, Edward Lee, ect. Nonetheless, sometimes I feel peer comparison is not fair. Maybe that author you just compared them to is not of the same caliber of intelligence. Maybe that author you just compared them to they don’t care for, or simply they are nothing alike in their writing. For instance in a very very good interview someone compared Jon Athan to Matt Shaw. All apologies, I LOVE Matt Shaw’s work, I buy it, read it, and love it! With that said Shaw is nothing like Athan. They are like comparing apples to eggplants! They do not write at all alike. That is totally alright! Shaw has flooded the market with tons of gory little novellas, and that is fabulous. Nonetheless, Jon Athan is nothing like him, as Carver Pike is nothing like either of them, as Aron Beauregard is nothing like them, as… well, you get my point. Okay, that is my little rant. Love your indies for who THEY are! Don’t compare them to peers currently on the market. Unless they are straight up just like each other. Personally, I cannot think of a better comparison for Jon Athan other than the late great Jack Ketchum.

Overall, Dead Body Disposal is an absolute MUST READ of the year for Splatterpunk junkies! It is fabulous, and Jon even sprinkles in some actual true crime accounts in this book (three if I remember correctly) to use as inspiration for Kasper’s disposal ideas. Athan still has yet to disappoint, and I plan on reading more this year. I have dearly missed his works in my life! With this being his 47th novel he is also about to hit the big 50! Absolutely amazing for his age! Bravo, my friend!

I absolutely without a doubt must give Dead Body Disposal by Jon Athan five perfect stars out of five stars! I loved the story, the body, the ending, and the many aspects left to reader interpretation. Jon is always very well researched, and with a higher education background in criminology I am not surprised. Yet, that is a big factor why I love his writing. He also is bloody, visceral, and gruesome! Characters feel real as if you put yourself in their shoes you could see the same types of things happening to you. Or possibly you think your smarter than a character. All in all, Dead Body Disposal started off slow, chapter 6 hit (be prepared for that one!), and then it was game on! Splatterpunk junkies get this now! Until next time, my friends.

Well that was a gory messed up read but I expect nothing less when I read a Jon Athan book. Jon Athan is like home the for me when I want a straight up brutal gory filled bloodbath of a read and this one didn't skip on the fucked up or the gore. I will say it's not gonna be for everyone it's not a plot of depth. This book is exactly what the title says Dead Body Disposal. Jon Athan novels to me read almost like a screenplay and they always play like a movie in my head when I read them. I really hope in the future some of his his work can be made into films because I feel a lot of his work would easily translate well into films. So if you just want something violent and brutal to read this should fill that need.

Everyone was a killer until it was time to kill.

Max Baker has always had dreams of blood on his hands. Gruesome murder. A passion to kill.

One day, he finally breaks down and decides to let the voices in his head win. Do it. He then books a room for one night on the 29th floor of The Club Edison Hotel and hires a prostitute.

To have sex? No, silly— to kill her.

A pre-meditated murder. You’d think Max would be ready. Ready to kill, maybe. But ready to dispose of her body? Not so fast.

After killing Katie, Max panics. He calls up a longtime friend, John Kasper, to help him. Kasper will know how to help. He’s been a friend since childhood— knows all of Max’s dark desires, morbid fantasies, and the deviance harbored in his soul. Just thirty minutes after phoning his best friend, Kasper is knocking on the door of room 2906 ready to assist.

From here, things move incredibly fast. I like that about Dead Body Disposal, it kept me reading. And as quickly as the book ramps up— is as quickly as Max begins his descent toward failure and madness.

Nothing is working.

Max and Kasper try a plethora of different ways to get rid of the victim— and the pure gore in every decision on how to dispose of her body ramps up. This is a book full of carnage.

My poor eyes.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved the vivid writing style— I’m a gore whore myself. Every bit of my ★ ★ ★ stars goes directly to that. It was messy, disturbing, and brutal. Every scene stacked with more violence and morbidity.

What I didn’t like was its early predictability and the few unrealistic elements regarding Max’s decision-making and character overall. Maybe Jon Athan intentionally ignored realism to give us a gore fest, and that’s okay. Yet at certain points, it did pull me out of the story.

I didn’t love Dead Body Disposal, but I didn’t hate it either. It definitely kept me entertained though, I just had to see how Max’s story would play out. Does he get away with his murder or does he ultimately get caught?

If you’re into gory stories with no real character development, no true storyline, and some unrealistic areas— then this is for you. And I don’t mean that offensively. Again, I did enjoy the read. I’ve only read one other novel by Athan, which I loved. This fell a bit short for me, but I am very open to reading more from him. A solid ★ ★ ★ stars for Dead Body Disposal.

Yeah no thanks. The characters are so annoying and while I know that they aren’t supposed to be “good” or “likable” characters, I just couldn’t stand listening to them talk.
The twist, is extremely obvious in my opinion. Too obvious to the point that there is no build up or tension in the slightest. I didn’t even feel the need to continue reading because I already know where it’s going to go.
I’m not one to shy away from gore, violence, or the disturbing too often, but I didn’t need some of the scenes in this book. Definitely listen to the content warnings for this one.

A terrifically-twisted, sickeningly-putrid and cleverly-woven tale of such convincing psychosis that even YOU will begin to wonder what is real, who is real and how far can the intricately-spun deviations of a depraved human mind push someone.

Not Jon Athan’s strongest novel, but I do think this book deserves a higher average Goodreads rating. (However, I’m very bias as Athan is my favorite author).

Sure, some of this book could have been done better. I felt some scenes were dragged out and due to the simply story that was being told, Dead Body Disposal could have benefited from being shorter. I also predicted one of the twists very early on and thought some scenes were over done.

But once the book ended, I had a positive opinion. Without spoiling the ending, I’ll say there was a lot of questions I still had and (when done right) I kind of enjoy that. This is also one of those novels that dives deeply into a disturbed persons mind. A good psychological horror book always holds my attention!

Holy guacamole , that warning ain’t there for fun! 😆

First of all I love my horrors, the weirder the better. This book was recommended to me by Amazon and seeing that cover and reading the synopsis just got me screaming for more!

As the synopsis says we are following a man named Max who has killed a prostitute that he hired in his hotel room after “loosing control of himself” now he’s got to get the body out of there with out getting caught so he calls a close friend Kasper and they work as a team to hide Max’s crime.

This book is not for the faint hearted, it’s the most goriest, intense story I’ve ever read, I legit felt like I’d been in that room and committed this terrible crime too, I felt so dirty!

The characters are brilliant and although I got the whole story concept early on in the book, the ending was just great closure. Visualising these scenes in my head as you do when reading, was quite disturbing!

The author specialises in this hardcore body horror genre and he sure for filled his accomplishment on this, it’s a book I’ll never forget!

I would defo like to read more by this author in the future, once I’ve recovered from this one lol

A night on 'business' ends in murder for Max. What should have been a 'fun' night ends in Max calling his friend John Kasper and begging for his help disposing a body from the 29th floor of the hotel. The night goes from bad to worse, as Max goes to extreme measures to make sure nobody will find the body...

Another absolutely brilliant book by Jon Athan! I just know I'm in for a gory treat when I read his books, and the covers never fail to make me cringe!

This is a gory extreme horror that will be a good one to read to introduce you to this author's work. It's not as extreme compared to some of his other books (but don't get misunderstood, it is still extreme).

I will ALWAYS recommend his books and I just think he's one of the best people ever.

This has a crazy storyline with some massive twists and turns. It’s very gory. Somethings don’t make much sense and are left up to the imagination to agree if it was real or not. I did already figure out the twist about kasper before it happened but I did like it.

This is my second book by Jon Athan (after Scattershot), and it's just as gory and relentless as I remember his writing to be. He really knows how to tell a story, and you can tell how much research he does on the human body and what you can do to it 😅 as you can imagine this summed it up perfectly.

I really enjoyed this one on Audible. The narrator was great, and it felt very immersive, loved the story idea and how quickly I flew through it. I did however find the main character incredibly annoying and I sussed out the twist before it came out but I'd still highly recommend for some fucked up nastiness.

One of the more graphic titles by this author. What do you do when you kill a prostitute in a hotel room on the 29th floor? This is a question asked by the protagonist Max, so he calls his good friend John for help. John arrives and is horrified by the sight before him. He won't agree to physically help and incriminate himself, but he is willing to coach Max on how to dispose of the body.

What follows was so vile (which doesn't bother me) and nonsensical (that DOES bother me) that I had to remind myself I was reading a book created solely for shock value. It definitely succeeded there. There is a pretty big twist that is relatively easy to figure out early on. I did enjoy this title, just not as much as other ones I've read from this author.

So, if you want a really gory read, this book is great. The only problem I had with the book was the constant talk about there being so much blood and blood spurting many hours after death. You can't have spurting blood without a heartbeat. Due to lividity, all the blood would pool to the lowest center of gravity. This lack of detail took away from the story, in my opinion. I also thought using correct terminology for the body parts was unneeded.

Otherwise, I enjoyed the gory read!

My 17th Jon Athan book! They just keep on leaving me feeling like 🫠 and I’m here for it.

What I particularly enjoyed about this one was the attention to mental health. Of course there is brutality, incredibly sick and twisted violence and so much gore.. but you also get to experience the side effects and mental psychosis one may have going through in this situation. Athan has a way of taking a story we may have heard from a true crime podcast and putting you right there like you were there observing while the real horrific crime took place. It is grotesque and satisfying all at the same time.

Happy reading! 📖

I’ve never read a bad book by Jon Athan, but ‘Dead Body Disposal’ is one of my least favourite out of the twenty four I’ve tackled so far. The gore is excellent, you can tell Athan always does his research, but the plot itself left me wanting something more.

If you’re looking for a great place to get started with Jon Athan, I highly recommend Into the Wolves’ Den, Our Dead Girlfriend (Author’s Enhanced Edition) or The President’s Son.

I want to start by saying I listened to this one as an audiobook. This book was absolutely fucking fantastic as always Jon athan has written an absolutely fantastic book, this book is full of extreme detailed murder. There is a shit load of gore and violence, the plot of this book was very well done. The twists in this book are absolutely wild I loved every second of this book!! The characters we follow were very well written. I don’t have anything bad to say about this book 5/5 ✨✨✨ highly recommend this to anyone that wants an absolutely disgusting and violent book 🤭

I had to DNF around 37%, farther than I thought when I originally thought about DNF'ing. I couldn't stand Max or Kasper, I understand they aren't supposed to be likable but I couldn't stand the whine and such and the inconsistencies of his character from chapter to chapter. I also just couldn't make it past the VERY detailed description's of how he was trying to get rid of the body and I think it lacked an actual story and the dark humor I've come to expect from Athan.
