Crossing the Line: A Second Chance Cowboy Romance: Cowboys of Moss Creek, Book 5

Rate this book
Mistakes happen.

It’s a fact of life.
Unfortunately, some mistakes can’t be fixed.

Just like some wounds don’t heal.

You just have to live with the pain.

And the consequences.

Ben Chamberlain is dealing with both.
Five years ago he made a decision. One intended to protect the woman he loved.

He should have known better.

Liza is braver than he could ever be. Stronger and smarter than all the men around her.
She didn’t need his protection. Not then.
But now she’s facing a different kind of threat. One that hides in the shadows and lurks in the dark.

One that won’t stop until Liza loses everything.

It’s not going to happen.
Because for the second time Ben’s going to do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

Even if he’s not.

I wanted to like this one, I really did. I was looking forward to Ben and Liza’s book and hoping for an epic love story, sadly this was not. It was just an ok, low stakes read. There were many features of this book that I could get behind and that I felt were indicative of this author’s desire to write strong female characters, but this book was just so boring and mundane. It had no teeth. I’ve complained about this in previous books by this author, it seemed like all of the actions and story building took place before the book was written and we as readers were given it only in glimpses, memories or conversations. In the main story the characters worked out their reasons for not being together pretty quickly and then seemed to be in a one-upmanship contest of who did more for the other. This led to me skimming through a lot of it hoping for more push and pull, angst or, you know, PLOT.

Ok so for the things I did like about this book:

1. Strong silent cowboy hero - love me one of those, Ben was a great one and I actually didn’t find his reasons for leaving Liza alone for five years frustrating, which is my usual problem with second chances. He had a real honest to goodness reason for protecting her and keeping her out of prison.

2. They both didn’t want children and the author stuck by this and didn’t have any surprise babies or epic change of hearts. This was great because not every hea has to end with dozens of babies, especially for older couples who know what they want.

3. Epic rescue scene, won’t spoil it for you but the heroine is the star of this and it’s great and completely unconventional. Made me hopeful for the future of contemporary romance, which I am getting more and more frustrated with as we keep beating the same tropes and traditions to death.

4. Double proposal. Same reasons as number 3.

5. Inclusion of characters from previous books in moss creek in an organic way without epiloguing or over summarizing the plots of their books.

So yes, lots to like about this book in concept. Its the execution that didn’t work for me.
Long dragged out scenes dealing with the minutia of daily life. We must have gone to the bakery with them about three times, paint night, physical therapy appointments etc etc. I would have liked more plot and less of them just hanging out. Often this book felt like a long epilogue for their love story without actually LIVING any of their love story. And the villain arc was really badly done. It didn’t really even play out in the book until the 90% mark as only small things were revealed in the body of the novel. Again, I won’t spoil it, but the villain and his reasons for his actions came out of left field and didn’t fit with the overall story. It really played out as more of an after thought. This is unfortunate because this plot really needed more meat to it, and had the villain been better fleshed out it could have added more interest for me. I did end up skimming a lot of this book as it was quite uneventful.
That being said, I did like the character of Troy and will be looking forward to his book, hopefully I won’t be disappointed.

oh. my heart.

This story. It was beautiful and destructive… breaking my heart and putting it back together, over and over and over again. It was passionate, hot and cold, and filled with so much love. And that twist. Whew. I did NOT see that coming.
I am NOT a fan of angsty books, and this one is definitely angsty, but in such a wonderful way.

Janice Whiteaker’s Crossing the Line is a wonderful second chance love story with heart & depth. A solid kick off to her spin-off series Cross Creek Ranch, Crossing the Line continues to build the bridges created between the families in Whiteaker’s Cowboy Classified series with Cross Creek owner Liza Cross & her head ranch hand Ben Chamberlain. I love the way Janice develops both Ben & Liza’s histories as separate but intertwined backstories, moving their relationship forward with rich emotions and details. The theme of Found Family is solidly embedded in this novel, as is Whiteaker’s signature Girl Gang, who play a vital role in Ben & Liza’s discovery of who they are as individuals as well as how strong they are together. Add in some intriguing new faces, a bit of suspense, some incredible heat, and this is a serious late night into the wee hours of the morning can’t put it down read! Crossing the Line was everything I was hoping for and more. Now I can’t wait to see how that story blends and weaves into the rest of this series.

Second chance romance, first in a series.

Loved being back in this cowboy world.

Ben and Liza as main characters were lovable. I especially loved Ben and all he reasonings.

The first 47% of the book was a real struggle for me to get through, skimming big chunks of it, and I even stopped and read 2 other books before going back into it..

from 48% though I was hooked and really enjoyed it, loved the double proposal, absolutely loved Troy and his relationship with them.

Was nice to see returning characters from the other ranch.

I just feel this author struggles to commit to one storyline and give it her all, it’s a bit like she wants so much to happen that it just ends up being too much or not quite right..
Like I really wanted to see Liza’s parents react to what’s been going on and realising they’ve been left in the dark because she thinks they don’t have time for her. But because there was so much else going on, there just wasn’t time for it.

This is just my opinion because I’ve read previous series from this author that were great but these last couple of books haven’t been my cup of tea (or coffee!)

Worth a read and this one can be read as a stand-alone as it’s the first book of crosscreak

Ben has been in love with Liza for years. Liza owns the ranch and runs it after killing her abusive husband. Ben and Liza have a strange relationship pretending they hate each other. Finally, when Liza is injured, Ben can't stay in the background anymore. Strange things start happening on the ranch is something going on there? Loved seeing Ben get his HEA.

This second chance romance has so much depth in it. Ben was a quiet guy when we met him in Cowboy Classified Series, but, wow, he has many layers that Janice Whiteaker peels back with every page that is turned. Liza is a confident, independent woman that holds so much baggage she can’t—won’t—allow herself to 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 from anyone. Especially Ben Chamberlain. The passion in this story, both on the ranch and between the sheets, is beautiful.

To this reader’s taste, bold, rancher/widow Liza Cross and head ranch hand Ben Chamberlain anticipated tale was better in the wanting. The first half of the read bored, maybe it was derailed by its tantalizing teaser, or the repeated effort(s) to show Liza as independent showed her as childish while stoic, long suffering Ben loved her through it all. Or maybe it was boring.

With Liza’s recuperation underway the reader’s treated to snatches of what brought Ben and Liza together, drove them apart and their continued mutual attraction under the watchful eyes of the Pace women and Liza’s ranch hands, especially, up and (wanna) comer, Troy. When Liza’s injured again, Ben stops waiting patiently steps up to do what he’s wanted for years.

As seen on my blog (Jessie's Reading Corner):
Crossing the Line by Janice Whiteaker is the first book in her Cross Creek Ranch series, which is a spinoff of her Cowboy Classifieds series. If you’ve read the Cowboy Classifieds series, you got to see little glimpses of Ben and Liza sprinkled throughout the series as Liza is Mae’s best friend. (Mae is the heroine in Cowboy Seeking a Second Chance.)

I really enjoyed this story. It’s a captivating and emotional second chance love story that will tug at your heartstrings. While I enjoyed Ben and Liza’s story, I absolutely loved getting introduced to and getting to know the other characters in this book that will no doubt continue to pop up, and maybe even get their own love story in future stories set in Moss Creek.

One of my absolute favorite characters that was introduced in this book is Troy (aka Bacon Boy.) In the beginning of the book, Troy is one of the newer ranch hands that the ranch has hired on but as the story progresses, he becomes a confidant and friend to Ben. Troy reminded me a lot of Brett from Cowboy Seeking Nanny; cocky and flirty, but also reliable. His story is next in the Cross Creek series, No Coming Back, which will be released later this year. I am definitely interested in finding out who the lady is that knocks Troy off his horse.

Another new favorite character that we meet in this book is Muriel. Muriel is a sweet older lady that Ben and Liza meet at one of Liza’s PT sessions who they grow fond of and try to help out. I really enjoyed her character and hope we get to see more from her. Janice likes writing crazy old ladies into her stories who can scheme up a storm and get into some trouble (Violet in her Lost Boys series; Sylvia in Josie Watt’s Scandal in Sweet Side series) so it will be interesting to see how her character pans out through the series.

In the Cowboy Classifieds series, we saw a lot of the Girl Gang and while we did still see a lot of that in this story, I felt like we also got to see a Guy Gang too in this book. I really loved all the scenes with the Pace men and Ben. I loved how they included Ben in their game nights and I loved how they were a voice of reason for him. On the flip side, I loved how the Girl Gang was a voice of reason for Liza. Without them, I don’t think Ben and Liza would have been able to fully let go of the shadows of their past to actually move forward with their relationship.

I can’t wait to see where Janice takes this series and the subsequent spinoffs. If Moss Creek was an actual place, I’d pack my bag right now because it sounds like a wonderful place with some pretty wonderful people!

— What about you? Do you hate me?
— No. Didn’t have time... Cause I never stopped loving you.

Lisa Cross is known in Moss Creek for (maybe?) killing her husband five years ago.
She runs her ranch ever since in partnership with Ben Chamberlain, Cross Creek's head ranch hand.
They have a story full of love, pain and regret.
Now, are they ready to start over?

A book about Lisa and Ben is five stars from the start! ✨
They're endgame, everybody knew, and I loved reading it come true SO MUCH. I enjoyed every moment.
Lisa is fierce and strong woman that suffered so much in the past and never had the real happiness she deserved.
And Ben is the MAN. Bossy, possessive, protective, caring, this cowboy won my heart (and Lisa's) so easily, I swon in every page.
The story brought tough subjects that even in the past shown us how difficult was Lisa's life. And Ben's.
This book is about second chances, and Lisa and Ben must had theirs. They're made for each other. ❤️

I didn't expect the plot in the end!!!! OMG just when I thought everything was just happiness and roses and all this and that... I was trully suprised.

If you’re needing a romance full of emotion, about second chances, with steamy moments, great HEA, lots of cowboys and their crazy ladies, this book is for you! ✨

(Fun fact: Lisa is 35yo and Ben is 42yo, so this is an "adult" couple, which we hardily read about around here - specialy women in her thirties)

Even though I recommend you fiercely to read Cowboys of Moss Creek Ranch series 🤣 (and Moss Creek PD series too), you can read Crossing the Line as a standalone.

I have been impatiently waiting for this story since I finished the Cowboy Classified series, and I am not disappointed in what Janice Whiteaker gave us. Liza and Ben have been circling each other through the other books, and now we know why.

These two, there is so much hurt, and anger, and animosity, and confusion between them. I wasn’t sure if they were ever going to move past all of those feelings and get to the one that binds them together. LOVE. These two have a great love for each other, but life got in the way. You feel the hurt that Liza has each and every time she sees Ben. You feel the frustration that Ben has each and every time that he sees Liza. What happened between them, and the way it happens, I was NOT entirely expecting.

Liza is so strong, but so weak at the same time. She feels like she has to be this specific type of person to be respected as the ranch owner. Ben is the same, and he comes to the realization slowly that he isn’t really any better than the family he had walked away from. There is so much growth with these characters, and I really enjoyed the way their story played out. We get the introduction to couple Ranch hands that work for Liza, and teases into the next book, as well has healthy doses of the Pace family. I think Whiteaker did these two justice and I am excited to see where she takes us next.

**Spoiler Alert**

Liza’s life was a mess. She all but ruined any future she had when he was killed… Or so she thought. Ben was who she relied on but was it enough? She wanted more but knew that could never happen. Her future looked bleak. Would she ever feel whole again? The pain is excruciating but perhaps that is what she deserves…

For five years, Ben’s has been doing everything in his power to keep her safe. He would walk the ends of the earth for her but she won’t accept any help and especially from him. She is stubborn and thinks the world is against her but he knows differently.

An accident that could have taken her away from him has re-enforced what he knew all along. He cannot live his life without her and he needs to make her his. He loves her with everything he has but will she accept that? Will she allow him to show her that she is the strongest and bravest woman he has ever met? That he loves her unconditionally?

So much story to read with all the feels. As the drama unfolds you get an insight of who these characters truly are and how they so desperately need each other.

This story is filled with pain, heartbreak, betrayal, drama, angst, love and so much passion.

Beautifully written!

I found the first part of this book really frustrating and slow. There just seemed to be way too much preamble where we didn't really know what the issue was with these two. I'm not a fan of the reader being kept in the dark for a long time on some "big secret" about the characters; I'd rather know the problem and see how they work through it.

I kept reading because I liked all the rest of the books in this series, and I'm glad I did. It does all eventually make sense, not just in the storyline itself but in the way it was written. That frustration was an effective plot device for understanding these characters and their story. There is such a striking difference between an accomplished author that can deliberately create frustration in the reader and use it as a vehicle to advance the story and a poorly written book that is just annoying. And that's why I kept reading, because while I know even good authors can have a dud book, I have enjoyed the books I've read by Ms. Whiteaker and I kept hoping she would find a way to pull this off. She did. In the end, this really was a fantastic, rich, and well-told story.

Read it without looking at spoilers - it will be better that way!

True love

Liza was Cross Creek Ranch by her husband Ed who was an abusive alcoholic. Ben was the head ranch hand. They fell for each other after their long conversations when she would hide in the barn waiting out his drunken rage, sometimes nursing her injuries. Liza was set to leave Ed for Ben but he found out, he almost ends her life but she winds up taking his. They were unable to reveal their relationship because the Liza would be arrested since Ben was part owner secretly, Liza’s inheritance would be seen as motivation. Ben stayed at the ranch but walked away from their relationship. Liza was broken. It took years for her to rebuild the ranch out of debt and it was even harder as a woman to earn respect from the men who worker there especially with her backstory.

Liza saves her friend Camille’s son from being kidnapped, getting severely injured. Ben then realizes he can no longer continue the charade, after almost losing her again. Ben is determined to find away for her to see they can work but one roadblock after another threatens them.

I loved Liza, she is a complex character, so strong, brave while falling apart inside. Ben was a fierce protector with a huge heart. Their love was an epic story. I was never so wanting of a HEA.

Excellent read!

Another winning Novel! Wonderfully Entertaining!

Crossing the Line, book 5 in the Cowboys of Moss Creek series proves that Janice Whiteaker just keeps getting better and better. This novel leaves the Pace ranch and moves the focus to Liza Cross and Cross Creek ranch. Janice introduces to a whole new set of problematic, fiercely independent, snarky women! SO MUCH FUN! The added bonus is Janice begins to unravel Liza and Ben's back story. It is a story about surviving sexual and mental abuse and becoming better than you ever thought was possible. It is a story about not just GOING through trauma but GROWING through trauma. And despite all obstacles the story has a signature happily ever after ending!

Crossing the Line is full of romantic relationship angst that culminates in some panty melting sex scenes! I was caught up in the drama in page one and stayed hooked until the very last page. Which I read in one 6 hour session, no less!

I hope the next book does arrive in time for Christmas!

This one was okay. I got confused a few times about the interactions between Ben and Liza. I wondered if they even liked each other some times. Towards the end it became clear how much Ben loved Liza. But until we got there, it just seemed jumbled. Liza had some recovering to do in more ways than one. I don't blame her for being hurt that he didn't claim her, even if she did know why and that it was to protect her. When she asked why he didn't come for her sooner, I thought that was a good question. 5 years? He could have at least let her know he was still there for her (not the ranch) before he found her in the shower. Instead they were at each other's throats. Why was he initially so angry at her all the time? See? Jumbled.

I will say the "not a competition" but definitely was a competition aspect of their relationship in the end was adorable. I understood why Liza felt the need to keep trying to catch up. I understood the guilt she felt when she realized what all Ben went through. It was sweet.

Another gem.

It's so hard not to fall in love with Ben. I mean the man is perfect. And Liza? I think Liza and Nora are absolutely my favorite female characters from this author.
After reading the Pace Brothers, I thought it was going to be hard to top those stories, but this new book, which kicks off a new series, grabbed me from the start.
I like that in addition to being about overcoming and accepting, it is about abandoning the fear of self-discovery and allowing yourself to discover the other... and being vulnerable enough to let yourself be discovered... which is ultimately letting yourself be loved. Leaving the superficial to sink into the deep.
PS I would have liked to know more about Camille, after her story with Liza...
PS I can't wait for the Bacon Boy story

Ugh my heart

Yeah this was rough. I felt like our hearts had to be broken before they could heal and feel better. My heart broke for Liza & Ben. neither had it easy and because of the circumstances on their farm they were forced to work together but not be together for years after Liza's abusive hubby tried to kill her when she tried to leave him. And having to deny their feelings for each other for so long was torture. I love that even though they acted like they hated each other their love shined thru. And once Liza started coming around and allowing herself to be happy and to ask for help....she opened herself up to her and Ben being together again. Ben was such a good man and I loved how the Pace boys came around for Ben and not taking no for an answer when trying to include him in their fun.

Just friggin loved it!

Been waiting for Liza and Bens story for what feels like FOREVER! Ok so it’s been about a year so I’m exaggerating 🤷🏼‍♀️

Janice certainly made sure we got what we wanted for them. What a brilliant story of proving patience is a virtue and Ben been so patient.

Finally finding out why they were not together was heartbreaking, Liza really had no idea!

So many revelations in this one, it sure was bitter sweet.

Also now we have moved on to another ranch, we not only get the Pace gang we get a whole new gang who is we can have more books for.

I can’t wait for Bacon Boys, and a certain bakers who I hope will get her story.

Crossing the Line

I would recommend reading 'Cowboy Classified Series' before this series for a clearer understanding of Moss Creek.
Ben and Liza own the ranch together after the death of her husband Ed. At one time they thought they would be together as a couple but it seems that is not to be - or is it? The story of their challenges that must be overcome to move forward are sometimes sad, sometime happy and sometimes confusing to understand but the challenges move them through to a better life.

Tough and Soft

I so enjoyed Liza and Ben's story. I can surely relate to the depth of feeling that Ben carried for Liza, and hers for him as well. Sometimes when someone has been in an abusive and controlling situation, it is hard to wrap your head around the idea that you are loveable, and worthy of care. Ms. Janice has nailed it perfectly, making us realize that there is more than one kind of abuse! Ben needed love and care also, and booyah, these two somewhat damaged souls found their strength in each other! Well done, Ms. Janice, well done!

From hope to faith in love

Ben and Liza fell in love fives years ago and then life got in the way or was it death? In Montana things can be hard between the regular weather and struggles on a ranch but throw in bad guys and life just isn’t fair. They fight for each other and with each other until they can admit that love is stronger than hate. I love how Janice brings this community together and ties in all of the books. People mater more than anything else. I would recommend this this book to all who love a good comeback story.

I love the characters in this story and the second half of the book was really compelling and engaging. It was the first half I really struggled with. It was so intense and the characters felt over the top in a way that didn't seem earned. And, as a result, when there was a change in the relationship it felt abrupt to me. So I really struggled with how the story was structured. I really wanted to love this story and I had been looking forward to it but it just didn't quite come together for me. Until the second half, but the first half was problematic for me.

Crossing the Line

It's been five years since the confrontation between Lisa and her late husband. He was threatening her and Ben with death by knife and when he sliced her across the abdomen she shot him. Death is what he got for bringing a knife to a gun fight. Ben and Lisa finally manage to get together, fall in love when she kills her late husbands illegitimate son to prevent him from killing she and Ben. Once everything is cleared up they marry, bring her family to Moss Creek and build her family's house next to theirs. Great story.

Ben and Nora

I’ve been waiting for this one since I started the series and all I can say is WOW! I knew it would be gut wrenching and it is. Lots of emotions and some laughs. I love the Bacon Boy lol. These two have waited five years and have a lot to sort out. Plus there is someone lurking and plotting. I’m usually good at guessing the villain in books but this one…I did not see coming. Grab this book and settle in to see what’s going on at the Cross Creek Ranch.

Finally we got Liza & Ben's story and what a story. These two have loved each other for so long and protected each other without the other knowing. I loved this story and loved the Pace boys for finally not letting Ben keep his distance anymore and showing how family isn't just what your born into. I love the banter when the boys got together and how Mae didn't realise when she was the closest to Liza. Another good read.

Liza and Ben are finally coming back to each other

What do you do when you finally meet the one after you've married your worst nightmare? And when you have to kill him in self defense? Liza shut down in pain and turned away from Ben, drowning in guilt. Five years later, he's still here, keeping her afloat, loving g her from afar. Can she put the guilt behind and accept the love she almost had once?

Let’s start with what I liked… The secondary characters were wonderful to spend time with; loved Dawn, Muriel and Troy! It was great seeing past MCs but otherwise the story wasn’t great. Liza is so mean and angry with Ben and then all of a sudden 75% in she’s totally ok with him and in love. The story felt disjointed, speaking of which our villain just pops up to create mischief at around 90%? I’m glad I finished the story so I know what happens but otherwise 🤦🏻‍♀️

Rating 3 1/2 Stars bumped up from 3 for the secondary characters

a book of two halves

Was looking forward to Ben and Lisa’s story from their presence in other books but gave to say I didn’t recognise the sullen, moody and horrible person at the start of the story. Ben was a dream character but Lisa I could have cheerfully hit. Halfway through the book she comes back to being a better character. Guessed the villain of the piece and enjoyed the book.
