When Peter Hathorn proposes to his childhood sweetheart, Jenny Monroe, the outcome is far from the happy ending he envisioned. Before she can give him an answer, Jenny falls desperately ill. He does all in his power to ensure her recovery, but something between them has changed. Determined to win Jenny’s hand, he proposes each time he sees her, never realizing that the woman he loves harbors a secret that makes it impossible for her to accept.

After surviving the illness that claimed the lives of her parents, Jenny’s own life is changed in ways she never imagined possible. When her parentage is called into question, Jenny must delve into the truth of her identity—and what she discovers turns her entire world upside down. Although she learns to embrace an inner worth that defies social status, she knows it’s unrealistic to expect Peter to do the same. Oh my heart! This book is so beautifully written! It touched my heart. I loved how the author developed the characters. Watching them learn and grown, especially through heartache and new realizations about their lives...it was very touching! This is definitely up there in my favorite couple of books that I've read of hers. Love, Love, Love it so much!!!

Peter has loved Jenny all of their lives. Their relationship was so adorable! There are hard moments and lots of unknowns but through it all I loved how their love for each other changed and grew as they changed and grew. It's super sweet and one that will leave a smile on readers' faces while they enjoy it.

I agree with many other reviewers who said that this author doesn't shy away from the hard topics, nor does she sugarcoat the Regency era in this book. It all added such a great depth to this story and the characters' arcs. Well done!!! Definitely one I would recommend all of my Regency loving friends should read!

Content: Clean. There is nothing more than a few kisses. There is talk of adoption and of an unwed mother having a baby and giving that baby to someone else. No language.

I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

'The older you get, Hathorn, the more you realize how little you truly know. The world, the universe, does not get any smaller with your studies. Quite the reverse. As your knowledge expands, so does your void of questions."

Okay, sooooo many things to love about this book. I went into it almost blind and am so happy that I took the time to read this one. It is so much more than a historical romance.

From death, a found family, pressure of marrying up, expanding your knowledge, learning and growing through real life application was an incredible thing to watch unfold throughout.

I loved the romance. I loved the characters. I loved the conflict. I loved the setting. I loved that Peter never gave up-his patience and sensitivity made his character come alive and I believe readers will come away wanting to be better people after reading this story.

'There was something about being near Peter that made everything more enjoyable.'

Two enthusiastic thumbs up for this one!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Content: sudden illness, death of close family members, found family, romance-kisses only.

“A chocolate can make everything better.”

A book that talks about chocolate immediately has my heart, but there’s a lot more to this story than sweets and a sweet romance. Jenny has endured many hardships, such as death, illness, family drama and secrets, and societal pressures, but her resilience and tenacity is admirable, and it was a treat to watch her journey unfold.

One thing that I really enjoyed was how vibrant the descriptions of this time period were. Was life easy? No. Did people have an easy time making difficult decisions or dealing with suffering and distress? No. This book doesn’t sugar-coat the Regency times–it showcases the real with all its good and bad.

Samantha Hastings is a beautiful writer. I loved the connections to Shakespeare and the complex relationships between characters. This story is told in five parts, headed by a Shakespeare sonnet, and it was worth savoring.

Content: death; unwed baby/single parents; illness; mild violence; mild romance

This is another wonderful book from one of my favorite authors. Hastings does it again with her characters. There are so many delightful characters that really made the book shine. Frank especially was a lovely surprise. Amelia, Margaret (in her own way) Betty, Mr. Peck, and Mrs. Walton were very well done. And of course Jenny and Peter.

Jennifer (Jenny) Monroe recently lost her parents and found out hard truths about her upbringing. I absolutely loved her journey of self discovery and the changes in her and the acceptance she found were heart warming. I appreciated how she helped those around her in so many different ways. Peter also experiences growth and friendship. And I loved how he handled his family.
I received a paperback ARC from the author. All views are mine.

By Any Other Name swept me away into Jenny’s world. Hastings starts the story off with an emotional bang and my heart was torn into pieces for Jenny and her loss. Hastings certainly doesn’t shy away from the hard topics: death, an unwed mother, and depression. She tactfully handles each topic beautifully and she faced them head on. Life isn’t easy. Not everything is roses and sunshine, but we have to choose how we look at life and what we do with the circumstances we have been given.
Watching Jenny grow and learn was beautiful. Her journey is one that will stick with me long after the last page was read. The relationship between Jenny and Peter was one of a kind. He had to grow and change as well. This is part of why this book is so good, neither character was perfect, both had flaws and needed to become different and better people. I really enjoyed how Hastings brought everything full circle and that each character was memorable. I received a complimentary copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

By Any Other Name is a delightful Regency Era romance from author Samantha Hastings. I absolutely adored this story! This book had great characters, an engaging plot, lots of surprises, and a beautiful message woven throughout. Hastings does not shy away from some of the hard topics that people faced during that time period, and I am grateful for that. I love that there are nods to both Jane Austen and Shakespeare in this as well.

Jenny and Peter are absolutely adorable! I love how Peter is so determined to win Jenny’s hand and that he doesn’t give up. Jenny went through so much, and he’s such a great comfort to her even when she’s not so sure about things.

If you enjoy a swoon worthy romance, historical fiction, and nods to literature, I think you will enjoy this one! Highly recommend!

“What’s in a name?” This oft quoted Shakespeare line questions the importance of the name a person or place is given and asks us to answer with what we think. Though the quality of the something doesn’t actually change with its name, we humans have placed great importance on identity. I loved seeing this importance played through a beautiful love journey. Peter and Jenny have loved each other for years but tragedies and family history have kept them from being together. And as more history comes to light they will have to decide if love conquers all or if love will be conquered by social and family conventions. So many good life lessons were included in this story and were reminders to me of how I should always treat others. And though I am not a big fan of poetry, I did enjoy the lovely ones that were included in the story. So if you love stories of love overcoming all obstacles and found family, besides everything I mentioned above, pick up your own copy of this book so you can enjoy it as I did.

I really enjoyed this story. I loved the characters and seeing them grow through out the story. I liked the romance between Jenny and Peter and how persistent Peter was to marry Jenny. I also liked seeing Jenny and Peter change their view of those of a lower social class as they found out things about themselves and those around them. I also liked the inclusion of Shakespeare quotes and how Peter and Jenny understood these quotes and themes, it helped them in their own situations. I thought the story was good and would recommend it.

2.5? Clean romance, but the characters were meh. There was really no plot, just waiting for Jenny to get over herself and agree to Peter's proposal. Peter was way too patient with her...he should at least have gotten a little frustrated with her constant refusals. Honestly, it was kind of boring.

“There is no one I love but you.”

When dear Peter Hathorn proposes to his childhood sweetheart, lovely Jenny Monroe, the outcome is far from the happy ending he envisioned. Before she can give him an answer, Jenny falls desperately ill. He does all in his power to ensure her recovery, but something between them has greatly changed. However, Peter is determined to still win Jenny’s hand, so naturally he proposes each time he sees her, never realizing that the woman he loves harbors a great secret that makes it impossible for her to accept. After surviving the illness that claimed the lives of her parents, Jenny’s own life is changed in ways she never imagined possible. When her parentage is called into question, Jenny must learn the truth of her identity-and what she discovers turns her entire world completely upside down. Although she learns to embrace an inner worth that defies social status, she knows it’s unrealistic to expect Peter to do the same. It’s time for them to leave behind their childish dreams of happily ever after…

“If only she could understand that his love for her was as unmovable as the universe.”

@samanthahastingsauthor oh what a tender and heartwarming story! It is filled so beautifully with such endearing characters that rise above their own flaws and difficulties to become stronger and better. I enjoyed the witty banter, conflict, humor, setting, and the swoony romance. I think it may be my favorite story so far from you! Readers, this is such a dear story worth reading!

This is a childhood friends to more story but it's more than that. It's one that transports you to another era where it was difficult to be friends with those of a different social class. Jenny and Peter are childhood sweethearts who find their relationship tested by unforeseen circumstances and long-held secrets.

The story begins with Peter proposing to Jenny, only to have her and her parents fall seriously ill. As Peter supports her through her recovery and mourning the death of her parents he continues to propose to her, unaware of her private struggle. Certain information comes to light, causing Jenny to question her identity and who she is, which in turn affects her relationship with Peter

I loved Peter’s unwavering love and determination and Jenny's resilience. I can only imagine how hard it must have been for Jenny to have her life upended like that. The author's descriptions make it easy for readers to visualize the various scenes and empathize with what the characters were going through. This is a heartfelt historical romance that explores themes of love, identity, and society's expectations.

By Any Other Name immediately pulled me in - I was totally invested in the story from the first page to the last.

I love how Hastings creates complex characters -- full of strength and flaws -- within an engaging plot. Jenny and Peter are both wonderful and so very different, and the obstacles on their path to happiness are so real. The exploration of discovering oneself and learning and growing through life-shattering experiences is such a universal experience, but a hard one to write about in a romance novel. Jenny's path through grieving her parents and discovering her adoption (in a very class-driven society) is beautifully written. Her grief is never ignored or discounted, but is interwoven gracefully within the overall romance novel structure, without being over- or underwhelming. Peter's grappling with the importance of character versus class is also well depicted. I loved the depth these journeys added to this romance, and how the depth was added without making this an unnecessarily heavy read.

The sprinkling of Shakespeare throughout this story is perfect. I'm both very conscious of and grateful for Shakespeare's impact on English language/literature and also a reader who struggles with reading his works. The way Hastings includes Shakespeare in this story makes Shakespeare feel more reachable while also acknowledging the difficulties that many experience with reading his works. I also loved all the Jane Austen life references throughout the novel. They are beautifully subtle; little nods to the novelist that are there for interested readers to find, but without weighing down the novel in any way.

Cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Thank you to Covenant Communications and Samantha Hastings for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

He was just delightful and missed a lot… but then found it all in the end! I loved the kindness they shared and the beauty of finding love! What a joyful book! Just go read it and love it too!

"By Any Other Name" is a novel that grabs readers' attention right from the start. It has compelling characters, a detailed setting, and intriguing relationship dynamics between the main characters. It's filled with both sorrowful events and moments of joy.

The story follows Jenny, a young woman facing challenges with the death of her parents, and Peter, her higher-class supportive friend and eventual fiance is also a bright light in her life. Peter's charming qualities not only attract Jenny but also appeal to readers. The book includes meaningful Shakespearean quotes and is structured into five sections—Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, along with an epilogue. I found the details about Jane Austen at the conclusion and the sources of the book's quotes particularly interesting.

By Any Other Name explores how one's social class can shape their life journey. Themes of illness, loss, adoption, and embracing life's uncertainties are skillfully woven into the story. Author Samatha Hastings writes flawed yet lovable characters that wrap around your heart and take you on a very satisfying journey.

This was such a sweet story. I loved how Jenny came to realize that some things in life are more important than wealth and social status. Peter was also a good character, and I loved how his friend brought him to his senses concerning Jenny, and I loved the friendship between them. There was a point or two during the story where I was thinking of ways to make it more interesting... but it was great just the way it was written.

"They stood smiling at each other before Peter kissed her again and again. Each kiss felt unique and beautiful, like a snowflake, each filling the void in her heart."

I really enjoyed this creative and original Regency romance from Samantha Hastings. The story was so different from other books I've read recently and it was a good kind of different, making an impression on me with so many memorable moments and characters. The way the story unfolds in parts and seasons was also really neat and I like the way it moved the story and showcased the character growth.
Something I particularly enjoyed was the way the author wove the title of this book into the theme of this story; it just fit so beautifully. There were many creative nods to jane Austen herself and her life and I definitely recommend reading the author note at the end to learn even more. The Shakespeare references were also really enhancing and used so smartly.
By far my favorite thing in this book though was all of Peter's cute marriage proposals and yes, I said many. :) It was adorable and the last proposal was like whipped cream and chocolate on top. I'm still smiling about it.

I loved the dual POV, the class differences which were presented in such an original manner for this trope, and the characters themselves. Peter is going to be a new book boyfriend for many a reader, I loved him and Jenny so much.
I received an advance reader copy of this novel as well as I listened to the audiobook version which is very well done and I recommend. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

“Jenny was the star, the center of his universe. His hopes and happiness revolved entirely around her.”

This book is absolutely stunning from cover to cover. Samantha Hastings delivers a a beautiful regency romance with detail, an engaging plot, swoony moments, heartbreaking ones and strong character growth.

I put this book down feeling the drive to be better, but also touched and of worth. That is all due to the growth that Jenny, and Peter, experience throughout the story. And the romance is all you could want as a reader and more. There’s wit, there’s heartbreak, moments of self improvement and all the romantic interactions packed into one beautiful story. Plus you get Peter and all the proposals. That was one of my favorite pieces of their relationship and how it becomes such a special part of who they are.

And I haven’t even mentioned the Shakespeare woven throughout or the Jane Austen parallels. There are so many different aspects to love about this story that Hastings delivers to readers. If you are a lover of Regency, literature and romance, check this one out.

“By Any Other Name” is a delightful regency romance from Samantha Hastings. It was full of surprises, great characters, and a heartwarming message.

Peter and Jenny have the sweetest relationship. I love that these friends have fallen in love, and now they have to fight for it. Loss and unknown plaque Jenny, and she faces it with courage and strength with the encouragement of Peter. Peter never gives up on their love. He fights for her and their relationship. He is her comfort and steading force. With witty banter and stolen kisses, this romance is swoon worthy.

The message of this book is so important. Despite our circumstances and social class, we all have worth. I loved the way it was shared throughout the book, and especially how Jenny learned the worth of herself and her family.

“By Any Other Name” is the perfect book for anyone who loves plot twists, he’ll fight for her romances, and characters willing to stand up for others.

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy. These thoughts are my own.

4.5 stars for me, mainly because I thought some of the descriptions of romantic affection and kissing were a bit too flowery. To be perfectly honest, I almost put the book down when I started because the descriptions were too sickly sweet. But I am very glad I didn't.

A great read for fans of Jane Austen! According to the afterword, the author takes some details from Austen's life to weave into her story. I also felt like this story fit really well in the Regency era. It read like a story Jane herself could have written...if she had lived in the 21st century, but was still writing Regency romance...if that makes sense. :) By Any Other Name reminded me of Emma and Sense and Sensibility, but was also its own story. I like that while the romance was a big part of the book, it was not all-encompassing; the characters themselves had development to reach outside of falling in love with one another.

I found this an excellent, gripping read and that was before I understood that parts of the novel were based on the experiences of Jane Austen. The book highlights the fact that people should appreciate others for who they are and not from the rank that society can give them. It illustrates that through force of circumstance a woman had to give her child up for adoption to avoid disgrace or even worse a fatal poverty. It pointed out that society is bound by a class system where your value as a person is determined by your birthright not your ability. I would like to think we live in a more egalitarian society today and while it may not be as oppressive as in the regency period, the class system is still firmly in place. Sadly, money and power talk. And as in many societies, money and power are in the hands of men placing women in invidious, disadvantaged situations at times.

"By Any Other Name" is beautifully-written and is powerful with emotion! The Regency-era setting is described with details that help the reader to clearly envision the setting, locations, characters, clothing, and what is happening in the story. This helps the reader to feel invested in the characters and their story. The author has done great work expressing the time period and the characters' respective personal/familial difficulties in such a way that is both captivating and enlightening. The characters feel three-dimensional and like real people of that time. The character development was done very well! I love Peter and Jenny and felt fully immersed in their story and in my hope to see them both happy. The speed of the plot is perfect, the author's writing style is smooth and sparkling with wit, beauty, and emotion, the romance is sweet, swoony, and emotionally deep, and the themes explored are expressed with sensitivity and care. Beautiful book! I cannot recommend it highly enough! 5 stars

First, this cover is GORGEOUS! One of my favorite covers ever! I had heard good things about this book and it did not disappoint! Jenny had been through so much and my heart broke for her! But I loved watching her really grow into this beautiful and strong character! Peter was great! He was sweet, kind and by her side. I loved his love of the stars as I have always been fascinated by them! The actual proposal was great! I loved stepping into this world of regency! I loved the themes of adoption, found family and love! It was beautiful! The ending was perfect and I absolutely loved it! I highly recommend! 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I will definitely have to check out more by this author!

Quote that I liked:

🌷He kissed Jenny softly on the forehead. “I love you too, Jenny. More than the stars.”

A love story about childhood sweethearts! I loved it. This wasn't so much about them falling in love - because that has happened over the course of their lifetime together - but more so about them learning to fully trust each other. When Jenny learns her true history she worries about how Peter will react based on things he has previously said about those with a lower social status than him. Jenny is one of the sweetest main female characters I've recently read. She has so much goodness and kindness in her. Yet she isn't perfect. She also has much to learn. I loved how she learned to better accept and love herself and her birth family. Peter also goes through a good deal of growth throughout the story. By the end they are ready to fully open their heart to the other.

clean and wholesome romance

An enjoyable story of overcoming obstacles that life throws into the equation.

The hero faces challenges through his “perfect “life. That relationships can polish the rough characteristics. He is a wonderful character that is likable throughout his struggles.

The heroine is kind but as life hits hard and throws her world upside down she must strengthen her resolve and find the “new” strength that didn’t seem to exist but did.

The author creates wonderful characters that are lovable and some not as much. These characters are within a strong plot and world that the reader is invited into.

More of these characters are found in the upcoming book “ A Season of Wishes”.

I liked that the main characters were already in love at the beginning of the story, and then had to weather through some trials to be together. What I had a hard time with, was that Jenny had plenty of opportunities to tell Peter the truth about herself, but continued to wait. I felt that she should have had more trust in a person she had loved her whole life. I still felt the book deserved four stars because the story was interesting the whole way through. The title is clever and makes complete sense when you get a little ways into the story. There are a lot of nods to Shakespeare in the book.

In a little less than a week, Jenny has lost the most important people to her and she nearly lost her own life to illness as well. But when she wakes up and finds that not everything is as she thought it was she embarks on a journey of finding herself again.

This book was sad for the first half or so of the book. But sometimes life isn’t always cupcakes and rainbows. I appreciated the depth of the characters and the hardships they had to endure. My favorite part was definitely when Jenny shot all the fowl for Peter.
