Class Shift #1

Uncontrollable: A LitRPG Adventure

Rate this book
Whether it be the hero of legends or the character in a game, few things are more defining than Class.

Except maybe Class isn't always static. Tank, DPS, healer, and more. They are all just different sides of fate's die.

Taken from life as an office drone by a trickster god, Tim finds himself in the magical world of Iocusinte, where change is his only constant. It grants him great potential, enough to be sought out by different factions looking to use him for their own ends.

That potential, however, is mercurial. His Class and very appearance shift at random.

If Tim is to survive long enough to enjoy this new world and the friends he's making, then he'll have to solve the riddle of his nature and learn to master the uncontrollable.

Experience the next LitRPG saga from Amazon Bestseller Sean Oswald. It’s perfect for fans of Dakota Krout, Luke Chmilenko, and Troy Osgood.

The story is inconsistent and contradictory. Main character gets isekai-ed to another world (that has a vast experience in receiving "travelers" from four other worlds (what makes each traveler different is the time period they come from (because all come from those 4 other worlds). There are four territories in this other world, and they are placed in a map in quadrants (although author talks about the geographic of the four territories in this other world, the publisher and author do not include a map of this other world). While main character has never been isekai-ed, so thus a true noob (inexperienced traveler), the author makes play by play commentary of each choice each decision which makes it tedious, contradictory and lame. Either main character has never experienced life in another world (and questions everything) or he has vast knowledge and experience about the game-like system in this other world and information about this other world and would not act like to total noob...
The game-like-system is convoluted and strange. This other world has "magic", but every change that main character gets (level-up or in relation to skills) makes physical changes (that hurt) to the main character (like if there was no real magic in this other world), that or the author is a sadist, sociopath/psychopath, that enjoys hurting his main characters just because the author can...
Main character has Over-Powered (OP) skills, but his attitude, his performance is sub-par. The territory where he arrives to, distrusts him, makes him into an indentured adventurer (taxes him 75% of his entire income). There is no real main theme (at least not explained in this first book), no point to this book, get the feeling that it's written by the seat of the author's pants, day in the life of a "traveler" sent to another world (isekai). Main character changes (shifts), but never really explains why?? what for?? and when main character changes forgets (amnesia-like) so it's above confusing (for the main character and the readers) what was the author thinking??? Nobody knows, less people even care...
I do not recommend this book or the series. There is no real world-building (describing the economic, political, social, religious, geographical, geopolitical, systems in place in this other world. Because main character has no tutorial, no real objectives from the person, entity, etc. who summoned him to this other world, the main theme is in the air, there are no secondary arcs, just player data, about his changes (shifts), and about what he does (like a diary in the life of main character). Is it interesting? Not really.

This can be summed up in one word. Lazy.

Two thirds in, and I quit. This is just a lazy story with lazy writing. It is very stat heavy, but missing key parts that keep you from keeping track of things. This allows the writer to fiddle with details, rather than fully flesh out the systems. The characters are inconsistent, the world state is inconsistent, everything is inconsistent. The main character is boring and inconsequential. This whole thing throws a bunch of stats at you with a cheap gimmick and hopes you never look at it too deeply.

It’s not a complete story. Just a beginning. It seems like it’s supposed to be mysterious but it isn’t. Just enough information to tease but not enough to become invested or interested, really.

I didn’t dislike it—I did finish after all—but I skimmed a lot, especially after 83%. It just became increasingly clear that nothing was going to happen to make me care. Also, I may have been put off by the attempts at humor, which only started midway through.

I did like the premise but it’s unlikely that I’ll continue with the series.

2024/12/21 Notes:

Currently on Audible Plus until 12/31/24

Solid narration by Daniel Wisniewski.

Fun concepts, but iffy on making them turn into a cohesive & make sense within the story world elements. There's a lot of "just go with it" that mostly works due to active sequences. It's only a trilogy. I hope the MC gets a better handle on his abilities and situational awareness for the new world that has become his home. Otherwise, he's gonna be another TSL lead that only survives by the mighty author's whims. XD

I'm far too busy to dive into a meaty & deep series right now. So trying out a bunch of going to expire soon Audible Plus books are going to be my mystery jam for the end of the year.

This has been an exciting and unique story to read. I'm digging Tim, he's a good egg and I don't like how he seems to be getting used by everyone around him. I think there's going to be some twists in the series and I'm all for it!

KU Review

“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis. I hate trying to define my enjoyment and describe facets of it that would appeal to someone else. It is simply not my style. But for the sake of those fishing for clues:

Character development: good
Game elements: moderate
Harem elements: none
Summary: interesting take on what an unstable character would look like.

I will happily discuss the book with you on Goodreads if you are so inclined. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.

Cheers

Main character gets pulled into another world, that happens so often that there is a sorting system in place to know how many generations it was since their progenitor came to this world.
The main twists of note: There are 16 classes, 4 main entities that 'sponsor' the new arrivals. And of course our main character gets sponsored by a Loki wannabe who through the random rolling of a dice decides that our hero will roll each time he sleeps to see if his class will change.

Harem incoming?

Liked the general premise but I don't read these books for romance or love triangles but if it's worked into story and interesting way or kept to a minimum what sours me on the book and the series going forward is that it appears to be setting up a relationship with teenager even if the 28yo main character is resisting it and it's the way of the world he is in. Maybe it does of course correction but I'm dropping the series here

Too bland

I got to ch 12 and made some notes. The world building is 80% of the words you read. Your not discovering the world in a natural way it feels forced and dry like a game manual.
I don't care about the characters. They are neither likeable or hate-able just feel megh
This is possibly due to the characters feeling as if there are a 4th note to the hidden agenda to the game, the gods, and the guild masters.

I'm so relieved I didn't have to pay for this. The concept is somewhat interesting. The writing and execution were not great. Same issues as most LitRPGs suffer from (shallow undeveloped characters, overpowered MC, half-assed oversimplified setting, etc.

I do really like what the author was trying to do, I just wish they had a better ability to execute it.

couldn’t finish

The MC is an idiot. He says and does the dumbest things. Also the dialogue is terrible and the way people interact with each other feels very unnatural. I like the premise, but the execution needs work.

Another homerun from Sean Oswald.

Awesome main driving mechanic that will keep things fresh for the duration of the series. We're now in another situation where I don't know if the author should write this series or their more established one.

What to choose!

I kept giving this book a shot because I liked the concept, but it kept coming across like a young dm who wanted to make a dmpc that wouldn't accept women at their table. Eventually, I moved on to other titles on my to read list.

MC, a contemporary man, transported into a world of sword and magic. Being forced to transform both mentally and physically causes him to doubt himself, is he still the same person or someone new after every transformation. Learning to live in this world with ramping monster population and consequential attacks and with limited to no control of who he is, being a pawn to the greater forces, MC tries to keep his consciousness.

The underlining plot of beings with greater power competing for the faith of the common folk and a new underdog trying to join the stage is not unique but could be quite interesting. Like, Critical Role campaign 2, Jester's god is the traveler, who is of fae, possessing power unimaginable to the typical person and insignificant to the divine beings. However, in Uncontrollable divine beings seem to be douches with no organized clergy or significance in the world, performing the occasional acts of whimsical divinity.

MC severely lacks self control and has poor planning qualities. Every transformation he faces the same issue, having his unconscious desires overpowered by his new class, yet, he doesn't learn anything and after every transformation experiences edgelord level of inner monologues. Oh all this power, I am so powerful, finally I feel like myself, I must restrain my animalistic desires or I might commit something unthinkable, so on and so forth.

Conclusion: 1/5. Listened on Audible included in plus catalogue. Narrated by: Daniel Wisniewski. MC is an edgelord and his edginess isn't portrayed in a comedic light, rather supposed to be taken seriously. His background is introduced in an ok way, elaborated when the occasion arises. Some grand plot is going on in the background and MC finds himself in the middle of it. But he has few heroic qualities, acts purely on impulse, creating more mess than cleaning up. Bad value for the length of the book - 1.17 $/hour (28.71$ /15 hrs 23 mins ).

Values:
Terrible: >1.66 $/hour
Bad: 1 - 1.66 $/hour
Good: <1 $/hour
Dream: 0.4 - 0.27 $/hour

First off, I didn't enjoy the narrator, I tried to see past it but am uncertain if some elements of my book critique are due to narrator.

Felt like the gaming systems were made up as we went. The MC got some skill/system with some limitations, only to almost immediately get those limitations removed as if the author got bored with limitations. Once literally by a deus ex machina die throw..

MC is unlikeable. Sometimes very, very cringe in an incel kind of way. Here I believe the narrator trying to make every other word sound epic and co-oohl (cool for those not familiar with adding extra syllables and oumph to words) may have worsened it. On the other hand, the MC does undeniably threaten people or otherwise being rude all the time as well, all in attempts to make him co-oohl.

Male authors, please consider if it's really adding to a story to describe all womens beauty/looks/sexiness to this extent. We get it, MC be horny, but it's still annoying and over used. Shop keeper? Yeah she's ok-ish even though she is - gasp - *late thirtys* (!). Young kid that magically is either around 14 or seemingly 20 while behaving as a 5-year old? She's gorgeous and hot/willing but maybe, reluctantly, too young? Etc.

The story arc is a bit all over the place. I liked the idea to skip the first levels but so much of the story makes no sense to me.

A decent read, but had some pacing issues from my perspective. At about the 2/3 mark the story really seemed to switch gears and I found it a bit jarring. Not the end of the world, but a critique for the author if he's inclined.

One thing that stood out to me, that I've seen in a lot of other books: Isekai MCs applying their cultural standards to another world and expecting it to conform. For example, the MC has a potential love interest in literally the first woman he meets in this world. Turns out that she is 17 (he is 27).

Yes, in modern America this would be a legal issue, but his reaction of "ewww!"is a bit much. It is to be noted that he had no issue until he found out her age. Objectively, a woman is fully grown and developed at 17, certainly capable of bearing healthy offspring. Finding her attractive is biologically ideal, and in cultures like that at 17 a woman is just that, a woman, not a little girl by any stretch.

I can see him having issues with the slavery, but slavery (of everyone, not just Africans) was common throughout our history, so it it's more an issue of how they are treated. "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" is ancient wisdom for a reason.

Crafty play with Roll Playing rules in this story.

I really liked the play with words and creating the ephemeral theme. Ever changing. This would be something interesting to try to play out as a character. And with it being a story, it's all a strange shock to the main character, Tim.

Tim doesn't have any friends in the world he just woke in. Making friends can be a little complicated if you look different today as you did yesterday. This is what he rolled, ephemeral, and he's trying to make his way in the world with it.

Tim's at the center of what's happening. For the good or for the bad? I'm not sure. I bounce back and forth depending on the god we see interact with Tim. He's over powered yet has so much to learn. The events in this book are getting Tim ready for what's to come. So what's to come?

There's more going on in the world. With the gods and rulers. They haven't told Tim yet, but we see it in the Prologue and Epilogue. I'll be listening to the next books as this is a fun idea and I'm curious as to what's happening that we aren't seeing, yet.

This book just never really clicked for me. The class shifting mechanic kept the focus from remaining on one job for too long, but it also reduced the ability to get really invested in a build. The protagonist's personality changed a little with each shift as well, which may have reduced my attachment to the character somewhat. Because the character has a default level that was very high, there wasn't much sense of growth, like most LitRPG have. He randomly gained some new skills and learned by doing, but definitely nothing like the usual grinding and leveling up stories.

Overall, the world was well developed, there were a number of distinct characters and the writing was fine. I can't really put my finger on why, but it just didn't particularly hold my interest. By the end, I was mostly just feeling impatient for it to be over so I could find a new book.

I like the writing style and that the author didn't make the MC Super Overpowered right at the start like too many writers do today. Author is building the story at a reasonable rate and has added a good twist to the story. I think this twist is fun and will add to the story line. I also like that the MC doesn't fit right in to a whole new world like nothing even happened to him. When it's you against the whole world. You can't just yell this is wrong and demand everything you don't like is immediately "Fixed" for you. Easier to "fix" you if you know what I mean.
I will freely (as it doesn't cost me anything) recommend this book to all who enjoy these litRPG kind of books. I have already read the 2nd book in the series and it is still going strong and hasn't strayed wrong.

The conceit of this isekai LitRPG novel is that the protagonist is kidnapped by a god for ... reasons ... and ends up with a trait that causes his class to change randomly. This works fairly well for the plot (which is a very standard "stop the BBEG" quest).

The resulting power level is very high relative to the rest of the world (again as is typical in this sort of novel). There are interesting twists and shenanigans and the resolution of volume one is fairly satisfying.

That said, other than the protagonist, the characters are paper thin and the attempt at a cute familiar fails miserably, since the familiar is a constant annoyance.

Not stellar, but not bad. I'll continue with the series.

The writing was decent. The premise was good. I struggled with 2 things. By halfway through the book he hadn't really made a connection with anyone. It made it difficult for me to connect with the character. But the big reason is 2. Tim kept doing things that just didn't make sense to me. For example, if you turn into a different creature, that isn't seen around town. Sure you might not immediately recognize they are talking about you when someone screams monster, but seriously, you looked at yourself in the mirror. Unless you are completely stupid it's going to click. So, I didn't really feel any connection with the main character and stopped reading about halfway through the book.

Seriously after reading and enjoying Sean Oswald's set Life in Exile, picking up Uncontrollable was a no-brainer, although I'd never heard Daniel Wisnieski's work, I didn't even care. I knew I just needed to get the book! And boy was I right Sean wrote a dynamite litRPG!
Welcome to Tim's new life! Welcome to the magical realm of Locusinte where game like rules are in play... Trapped here by a Trickster God, Tim has to learn fast if he wants to live!
Oh and that guy Daniel well he's awesome too, giving a fantastic voice performance!

One of the best LitRPG series openers I've read so far. It has everything the genre has to offer and it ties everything with a decent story.

The MC is OP but still a noob. He's changing classes in an... #uncontrollable way, and this makes it interesting (and refreshing in this genre)

He's learning the lore in a very entertaining way, and his attempts on joining multiple teams under various circumstances are adding a bit of depth to the social part of the story.

I'm definitely looking forward to this series.

What's the time Mr Wolf

I was uncertain about starting this book because I've been heavily reading a lot of litrpg lately and was afraid this would blend with the others I've been reading so far. However the premise was something different, and I was pleasantly surprised at the concepts uncovered as the story progresses. I also enjoyed the little twists and the fact the author keeps you guessing about what is about to happen. I'm not a fan of needing to be smacked on the head with the obvious hints and plots, so this is more my kind of litrpg.
Keep up the great work!

This book was pretty good, but I didn't feel connected to the protagonist like I generally do. I think that I liked the "god" figure more than Tim. I might listen to the next book in the series, but I have a hard time spending money on okay books.
Tim is taken to this other "world" like has been the trope for Sean's books (and anyone that is taken from one world to another) without knowing why, but having an understanding of RPG games. Tim isn't likable or relatable. I think that I'm more interested in what he does or can do than the character himself.

Good Series Opener

I liked the ideas in this book, and it started out right in the middle of it, which I think works great for LitRPG books.

The magic system is a bit odd, since our main character is different than most of the citizens of the world, but straightforward enough that it didn’t cause issues.

Plot and narrative flowed, with enough hints to the next in series to keep me engaged, and lots of “cool scenes” that kept me entertained throughout.

I would read a book 2.
