Driving along the busy M60 in Manchester, DI Ridpath is forced to brake when a young man wearing only a pair of boxer shorts runs in front of his car. Ridpath manages to stop just in time, but the man sets off running again, straight into the path of a lorry, and in addition to this horrifying tragedy, Ridpath saw another man behind the barrier who was clearly in pursuit of the now deceased young man, and the assailant was pointing a gun - the problem is, nobody other than Ridpath saw the man with the gun!

1990’s Manchester was a violent place following turf wars amongst opposing gangs desperate to control both the drugs scene and Manchester’s many clubs. Things have been quiet for decades now though, with the rival gangs calling a truce, happy to control their own areas, but events are about to take a very nasty turn following the death of this young man, and police are bracing themselves for a return to all out war amongst these violent criminals.

This is the second book in the DI Ridpath series, but there is sufficient backstory, meaning it reads well as a standalone. Ridpath is such an easy character to like, sidelined from his job with the MIT, he’s in remission from cancer and is currently working in the Coroners office - a fact which added interest to the proceedings. The plot twists and turns, the characterisation is good, and the atmosphere of Manchester’s gangland wars is well drawn. The characters are certainly plausible and drive the novel to a compelling conclusion!

*My thanks to Canelo for providing me with an ARC for which I have given an honest unbiased review in exchange *

When a detective is the only witness to a perfect crime.

Where the Dead Fall is the second book in the DI Ridpath series but it can be easily read as a standalone. There is enough backstory which explains everything that happened in the last book. DI Ridpath, recovering from cancer and shafted from the police dept to the coroner’s office, is in the process of getting his life back together when everything goes wrong. Ridpath becomes the prime witness to a murder, right on a busy highway. When not even his own police dept. is ready to believe in him, Ridpath has to prove that not only he is right, but also unearth a sinister plot that threatens the whole of Manchester.

Right from the thrilling opening scene to the climax, Where the Dead Fall is a non-stop thrill ride. There are plenty of twists and turns throughout the story that will keep you guessing. The story has 3 parallel tracks; Ridpath’s personal life, the office politics and the main mystery. All 3 tracks have complimented each other so well, you never feel bored as the story seamlessly switches between the three. The office politics part was well researched and realistic & Ridpath’s personal story is so endearing and heart breaking at times, that you are almost rooting for him to succeed. Ridpath’s struggles with the politics at his workplace as well as the turmoil in his personal life adds another dimension to the story.

The mystery part feels slightly overshadowed in the first half but it gets into top gear into the second half. The story makes you believe that this will be another murder mystery but it turns out to be so much more. The pace of the novel which is brisk and fast-moving with few dull moments and an ever-changing landscape. The background of Manchester’s gangland wars is really well done.

M J Lee has done an excellent job of bringing to life some unique characters, even the minor ones. Ridpath is such a well-crafted character; recovering from cancer, abandoned by his colleagues and now his family but giving his all to his new job. The book is readable, just to follow the ups & downs in his life. I believe the characters have elevated the story to another level.

Overall, this was an excellent follow up to the first book of the series. The storyline in this book continues from the first book, Where The Truth Lies and though this book can be read as a standalone, It is recommended to read the first book as well. I hope there will be a third in this series as I'd love to see where Ridpath goes from here. If you are looking for a thriller with some solid characters and unique twists, you will enjoy this one. 4.5 /5

Many thanks to the publishers Canelo, the author M J Lee and NetGalley for the ARC.

This is a fast paced and thrilling piece of crime fiction from MJ Lee, featuring an interesting protagonist in DI Ridpath, suffering from cancer although currently in remission, with problematic personal and family issues. This is the second in the series, but my first, however, it works just fine as a standalong. Ridpath is working at the coroner's office but still linked with MIT, which has now acquired a new boss in Claire Trent, finding himself surrounded by ghastly organisational politics that targets him as a scapegoat. Ridpath is a compelling and such a likeable man although often refuses to prioritise what is best for his health as he begins to be consumed by his latest investigation. It all begins when he coincidentally finds himself in the middle of a horror of a motorway accident when he is on his way to see his daughter.

Ridpath sees a man in only his underwear running amidst the traffic seeking to elude another man with a gun. As tragedy ensues, Ridpath brings the road system to a halt whilst trying to find the gunman. He is to come under fire and undermined when no-one else appears to have spotted the gunman. For a considerable time period, Manchester's criminal gang scene has been relatively peaceful, but murder means all this is set to change, with the police fearing a return to all out gang warfare. Ridpath is to find himself in the most challenging and twisted of investigations as he seeks to uncover the truth of what is going on. Lee gives us great characterisation, a wonderful sense of location and gripping well constructed storylines in this tense and suspenseful read. I found this an enjoyable and engrossing read, which I think many crime fiction readers will find entertaining and exciting. Many thanks to Canelo for an ARC.

Book Reviewed by Stacey on www.whisperingstories.com

Detective Inspector Thomas Ridpath is back in the second exciting installment in the DI Ridpath Series.

The first book ‘Where the Truth Lies‘ introduced us to DI Ridpath as he hunted ‘The Beast of Manchester’ and started his job working at The Coroners Office after he returned from sick leave from fighting cancer. This time DI Ridpath is trying to solve the case of crime gang bosses children being murdered and bring the murderer or murderers to justice before there is another gang warfare happening on the streets of Manchester and turning the place back to Gunchester.

I’m old enough to remember the years of Gunchester. In fact, the school I went to was on the edge of one of the worst areas involved and had numerous pupils that were part of different gangs, so Where the Dead Fall resonated with me and I was just hoping that DI Ridpath could stop a turf war happening on the streets.

The book opens with DI Ridpath driving back from a meeting and witnessing a man run across the motorway in front of his car. Luckily Ridpath manages to brake in time. The man looks panicky and before Ridpath can help him he carries on running straight into the oncoming path of a lorry, instantly being killed. Ridpath is sure he saw a gunman on the hard shoulder but with no witnesses seeing the gunman, nor any cameras picking him up, Ridpath is made to feel like a laughing stock.

From this opening scene, the tension and excitement build, leaving you wanting more as you piece together the jigsaw as further bodies, both older and newer turn up. All have something in common, they are the sons of crime bosses.

Whilst the rest of MIT (Major Incident Team) believing that this is the start of a turf war in the city, a tit-for-tat, Ridpath isn’t convinced but he can’t seem to get anyone on his side. It’s up to him with some help from the new pathologist Dr. Schofield to discover the truth.

The book was pure entertainment from the first page to the last. I love that the series is written in my home town as I can visualise the areas perfectly. There are plenty of twists and turns to throw you off course more than once. The characters are all intriguing and a real mixed bag, the only person I’ve never been able to warm to throughout the series is Ridpath’s wife Polly. Her attitude to his career just grates on me.

If you are looking for a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat, well this is the one. Once I started reading I did not want to put it down. Whilst I would say this could be read as a standalone it would be better to read book one ‘Where the Truth Lies’ first as you will get to understand Ridpath and the way he works better.

Available Now!
The second novel in the Intriguing, edge of your seat suspence series starring DI Tom Ridpath!

He chewed the rope once more despite the pain, twisting his mouth so his canine teeth came in contact with it.
He would escape, he wasn’t going to be trapped here for the rest of his life. Soon, the family would realise he was missing. His father would come looking for him, wouldn’t he?
His mouth was dry, all spit absorbed by the rope. He stared at his wrists. A few fibres were sticking out from the rope but otherwise it looked untouched.
Why was he so thirsty?
He stared at the slime-covered wall in the light from above the door. Could he lick it again? Anything for a few drops of water to moisten his dry mouth.
He was about to lean forward when the green slime darkened, vanishing from view.
What?
What was happening?
Were they going to let him go?
A shadow covered the door. The handle was turning, the click of a key in the lock. The smell of cigarette smoke filling the room.
A man framed in the door, silhouetted by the neon light.
‘It’s time we had some fun.’

Where The Dead Fall by M.J. Lee is the second novel in the addictive DI Tom Ridpath series and it was as thrilling as the first one!
This is my second book by this author and I'm very glad to have been introduced to him!
DI Tom Ridpath is an engaging, big as life character who I grew fond of in book one and I couldn't wait to see what he would be up against next. He's a dedicated man who refuses to give up until he gets to the truth even putting himself in harms way, not once, but multiple times!
The storyline in this book continues from the first book, Where The Truth Lies, so to get the most of this book I recommend reading this series in order.
Both books were highly enjoyable and I hope there will be a third in this series as I'd love to see what Ridpath gets up to in the future!

With Thanks to NetGalley, Canelo publishing, and M.J. Lee for giving me this advanced digital copy to read and review.

DI Ridpath Book 2

Manchester has been at peace for twenty years and DI Ridpath is in the process of getting his life back together when everything goes wrong. Driving to meet his daughter, he is caught in a horrific motorway accident, in which a near naked man is run down by a lorry, while fleeing from lone gunman. Why did no one else witness the gunman?

This is another gripping read from the author M J Lee.l like the main character Thomas Ridpath for several reasons: he's loyal even though he is fighting his own demons, he's someone I would want fighting in my corner if I was ever to get into trouble. There is a lot going on in the story and I just had to keep turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. I don't want to say much more as I don't want to spoil the story for you. Do yourself a favour and get yourself a copy of this terrific read. I do advise that you read the first book in this series if you haven't already, though it can be read as a standalone.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Canelo and the author M J Lee for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Where the Dead Fall is the second book in the DI Ridpath series and happens to be even better than the preceding novel. It's a compelling page-turner with many twists, turns and ample misdirection to keep the reader guessing and there is more action than you can shake a stick at. With fast pacing, an interesting and unusual protagonist and a superbly crafted, exciting yarn, crime fiction aficionados will find a lot of enjoyment within these pages. I never thought I would say this, but I very much enjoyed the politics surrounding policing which come across as well researched and realistic.

Many thanks to Canelo for an ARC.

We've come to learn Tom Ridpath in the first book in this series as a very devoted man. Devoted to his family and devoted to his job. Sadly he cannot seem to find a way to have both work for him. He is still not very happy at the coroners' office, although he is doing a very good job - sometimes reluctantly admitted by mrs Challinor, the coroner. Together with the new head of MIT, Claire Trent, the two women are a formidably force in his life. Most important to Tom is of course his wife Polly and his daughter Emma. So, with these women around him, all demanding his love (Polly and Emma) and attention (Mrs. Challinor and Claire Trent) and a body that he still can't trust after being in remission for only a short period, you should think he deserves a break. The opposite happens as Tom sees, with his own eyes, how a man finds his dead on the M60.
We follow Tom as he desperately tries to find happiness again. Happiness in his work, by solving the case, and happiness in his marriage.

A very nice read with entertaining characters - even the bad ones. Looking forward to read the other books in this series.

This is the 2nd book in the DI Ridpath series by MJ Lee.

Recovering from cancer DI Ridpath is trying to restart his career and get his life back together when everything suddenly takes a step back. Driving to meet his daughter, he his caught in a horrific motorway accident, in which a near-naked man is rundown by a lorry, while fleeing from a lone gunman. Ridpath is far from popular with the traffic police as he insists on closing the motorway on the night of a big football match. The strange thing is Ridpath appears to be the only witness on a busy motorway. Ridpath is still seconded to the Coroner’s office but cannot leave the policing alone. Ridpath insists there is a gunman on the loose despite the disbelieving looks from other police officers.

This is another good police procedural, decent plot, well written and great characters. After rapidly reading this book there is only one thing to do pick book 3 up.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Canelo for an advance copy of Where the Dead Fall, the second novel to feature Manchester based DI Ridpath.

On his way back from a training course Ridpath is forced to brake suddenly by the appearance of a young man running across the motorway, only for him to be hit by a lorry who couldn’t stop. Ridpath believes he saw a gunman chasing the young man and shuts down the motorway as a crime scene. Unfortunately this causes a gridlock and calls Ridpath’s judgement into question as no one else saw the gunman.

I thoroughly enjoyed Where the Dead Fall which is a compulsive read, full of twists and turns as the bodies pile up. It is Ridpath’s story as he struggles with the politics of policing and his own personal problems but it also gives the perspective of other detectives and the killer. This latter is intriguing as they are mission driven but there are no hints as to the mission until very late in the novel. I like the pace of the novel which is brisk and fast moving with few dull moments and an ever changing landscape. The novel is interesting when it comes to the politics of policing. It seems to be every man for himself (or woman) so I particularly enjoyed the politics in the motorway shutdown scene. The new head of MIT, Claire Trent, constructs her own narrative which conveniently puts all the blame on Ridpath until it can’t. It seems very realistic to me.

Ridpath is a good protagonist with an interesting quirk (it wouldn’t be crime fiction without a hook for the protagonist). He is a smart detective with good instincts and was a rising star in MIT until he got cancer. Now in remission he was transferred to the Coroner’s office as a way of easing him back into work. Well, that was the plan but he’s still investigating, often on his own as Trent isn’t particularly receptive to his theories. He also has marital problems, mostly related to his commitment to work and inability to look after his health.

Where the Dead Fall is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

Now before I begin my review I will say that I have been left with a bit of a Annie Wilkes (Cathy Bates) twitch, which is a good thing, because this is an awesome read that left me gagging for more, turning the last page back and forth searching for something that wasn’t there. DI Ridpath is back for a second outing in this extremely addictive series that can be read as a stand alone but you would only be cheating yourself if you don’t read them both. (My review for book 1 to follow soon).
MJ Lee certainly got my attention with this opening chapter as my empathy for a broken bloke was through the roof, oh boy I ground my teeth and called to him willing him on. I could taste freedom for him but fate will always have its way…..one way or another. When a dead anybody turns into a somebody the smelly stuff really hits the fan and the police get a bit twitchy knowing that it won’t be the end of it. When a second man is found dead then it feels like Hell could be the new Manchester because a gang war was bubbling away like never before,
At just 37, Ridpath has been left in a bit of a no-mans land as far as his career goes, being a DI was too much for both his health and his marriage while his position in The Coroner’s Office could only be a temporary one. Ridpath is known as a bloke that really throws everything into his work but it doesn’t always go down well with his colleagues both old and new, especially when he digs a little deeper when they think a case is all neatly tied up. In this story he is becoming a bad influence in a good way on a few of his new colleagues, which seems to breath new life into them. I grinned from ear to ear with a couple of punch in the air moments the further I got into the book.
Ridpath is a wicked character that is finding strength in himself where others would have given up. He has that instinct that can’t be taught that pushes him further, the cost is huge though as he endeavours to be best at everything, with little personal regard for himself. He is a bit of a loner, where working is concerned but he is building his own little back up team for when he needs them too. This is another cracking, breath-taking story in this series.
I wish to thank Tracy Fenton and the publisher for an e-copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.

This was an excellent follow up to the first book Where the Truth Lies. DI Ridpath is still working for the Coroner. He is returning home from a two week course when a half naked man runs in front of his car on the M60. He just manages to stop when the man looks to his left, there is another man on the side of the road with a gun. The half naked man panics and runs further into the speeding traffic where he is promptly splattered by an articulated vehicle. Ridpath makes himself unpopular by closing the road and declaring it a crime scene. Unfortunately there is nothing to back up his version of events, no one else saw the man with the gun so Ridpath becomes persona non gratis for a while.

There is also a postponed inquest into the death of another man in a lake - an apparent suicinde. But is it? More deaths follow and a gang war is predicted for Manchester as the dead are all scions of crime families. But Ridpath has serious concerns about all of these killings and as he investigates further it becomes clear that all the deaths are somehow linked. But proving it is another thing altogether.

This was more tautly plotted than the first book. It was a very good read and there are clues at the end that there may be another book or so in the series. I hope so because the Ridpath character who works at the intersection between the police and the coroner is interesting and different. The stories are both plausible and realistic with 'real' characters populating the pages.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I haven't read the previous book in this series bu that hasn't impacted on the reading of this one.

The author sets the scene surrounding DI Ridpath and his place in the police force. He is a likeable character and well defined. The opening scenes of the book are full of impact in more ways than one and this continues throughout the book. I loved the way different branches of the police are portrayed and the internal wrangling that Lee describes so well.

It is realistic in how events unfold and I had no idea of who the girl was. I intend to go back and read the first book in the series and will be eagerly waiting for more

Where the Dead Fall by M J Lee
I think M J Lee is becoming close to being one of my favorite authors of British Murder Mystery/Dectectives stories. This is the second DI Ridpath book I have read and both I have thoroughly enjoyed and they come under the 'hard to put down' category.
Based in Manchester, which Lee brings to life, Ridpath is a fully formed all rounded character, where all his faults and flaws are apparent and he tries to build his crumbling personal and work life after struggling to overcome cancer.
In, Where the Dead Fall, Ridpath is determined to put a 100% effort into coaxing his wife and daughter back into the family home, but on setting out for a family day, he is caught up in an road incident, making him late, but also getting him personally involved in the case. As a hunter of the truth and a lover of inconsistences he carries on determined to find the truth while stepping on everyone's' toes along the way.
Due to his ill health and recovery, he has been seconded to the coroner's office to help, but he finds his work crosses over between the detectives office and his own. Lee is a craftsman for hunting down the truth.
Now, after praising Lee and Ridpath for their skills and brilliant story telling I have to mention the thing that to me was a negative. The ending. It left me hanging and trying to get to the next chapter. I think it was totally unnecessary. After a great story I put my kindle feeling flat and disappointed. It needs a new ending. for this reason I am giving it four stars.
I thank NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Oh how do I even begin to describe this book. I was really happy when this book came on NetGalley and I was ecstatic when Canelo gave me this book!! And I was so looking forward to reading this book and boy I wasn't disappointed!! I had fallen in love with Ridpath after reading the first book and this book carried on from where the last book left off. The story is brilliant and Ridpath is brilliant as usual. The way M J Lee creates the twists and turns in this book is just mind-blowing and at times seriously complicated but immensely enjoyable. And I loved the new characters that were introduced in this book, Claire Trent then new Head of MIT and Dr Schofield who's described as a teenager due to him suffering from Kallmann Syndrome among the few. And the rapport between Charlie Whitworth and Ridpath and Margaret Challinor and Ridpath were brilliant as well. The only thing that drove me crazy and to be honest quite scared me was Ridpath and his stubborn attitude of putting the job before his health . I was internally shouting at him when he was being an ass. But overall this is a brilliant book and not only carries on from where it left off in the first book but takes it a few levels higher. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who cares to listen!! And a big thank you to NetGalley and a big big thank you to Canelo for giving me a chance to read this ARC in exchange of my honest review.

Thank you NetGalley and Canelo for this arc.

This is the 2nd in the DI Ridpath series and even better than the 1st. I didn't notice any of the obvious plot contrivances and implausibilities that I found in the earlier book. This also had a nice twisty, twisty plot. It started off a little slow with 3 seemingly disparate death investigations, one of which Ridpath shouldn't have even been involved with, except he was the main witness. Poor Ridpath didn't seem to know who was his primary boss in this one and kept bobbling between the Coroner's office, the DCI of the MIT and his former MIT supervisor ( who was trying to run around the DCI). So the same office politics and gamesmanship as before, just some different positions. The pace did accelerate with seemingly disparate death # 4 and Ridpath kicked into high gear in his investigations.

I was a little frustrated with the "cliff-hanger" ending however and am waiting on the next book (I hope) to see how that resolves.

This is the second book in this series, and in my opinion, better than the first book.
DI Ridpath is still at the coroner’s office but his heart is still with the MIT.
Ridpath is driving to meet his daughter, but is caught up in a motorway accident, in which a near-naked man is rundown by a lorry.
Ridpath sees a man at the side of the road pointing a gun at the man but he’s not caught on CCTV, so no-one believes him.
Ridpath starts investigating and works with Charlie to try and get to the bottom of what happened.
Another body is soon found and there are some similarities found at the post mortem.
This is a fast paced book which had me hooked throughout.
Thanks to Canelo and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

When DI Ridpath sees a man running away from a man with a gun across the M60 - and getting hit by a truck he causes chaos by closing the motorway on match day. Nobody else sees the man with the gun but he is adamant on what he saw. Causing problems with his career and dealing with only just returning to work after cancer treatment. he keeps digging. until the truth is found.

Another great book by Lee although some of the references to how Ridpath is feeling tired etc can be a bit repetitive.

Fast-paced, believable, complex characters, an authentic, recognisable setting and a likeable detective; four of the reasons, the DI Ridpath series is a favourite of mine.

Ridpath is a conflicted man, driven by his role in the Murder Investigation Team (MIT), he neglects his wife and daughter who he loves dearly, the situation implodes when he becomes dangerously ill. In remission and reassigned, he finds his detective skills are in constant demand, and maybe he can rebuild his family life too, as a policeman attached to the Coroner's office.

The first chapter of this second story in the series is adrenaline-fueled and suspenseful, the writing is full of visual imagery, and it's easy to imagine what's happening. It would make a great TV series.

The plot is layered, with new surprises and dramatic irony, where the reader learns information that the main protagonist doesn't know.

Ridpath's work life balance is a constant source of conflict as he tries to rebuild both his career and his family life, this doesn't impair his detection skill, which is insightful and tenacious.

This is an intelligent thriller, not relying on graphic images to draw the reader in. You turn the pages because you want to know if he will outsmart the criminals, his doubting colleagues and still manage to salvage his personal life.

I can't wait for the next one.

I received a copy of this book from Canelo via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

With his marriage on the rocks Ridpath is juggling with trying to get his family back together, his job with the Coroner’s office and his loyalty to the GMP Major Incident Team. He’s driving over to see his daughter when a near naked man runs onto the M60 right in front of his car.

The police think it’s a drug fuelled accident. Even his beloved MIT think it’s an accident. Still something’s not right. Ridpath is sure he saw someone else at the side of the motorway but there’s no trace.

Ridpath rubs everyone up the wrong way in this one but he’s determined to find out what really happened. In the midst of a possible turf war of Manchester gangs Ridpath ploughs his own furrow to find out what is really happening and how he can solve this case.

Well written, fast paced this is another cracking read from M J Lee.

My grateful thanks go to Canelo for inviting me to read and providing eCopies of two of the D I Ridpath series (#1 & #3) via NetGalley.

The 2nd book was purchased.

All thoughts are my own and no payment has been received for these reviews.

DI Ridpath returns in this sequel to Where the Truth Lies. Ridpath is still working at the Coroner's Office and juggling that busy role with his health and increasingly fracturing family life. Whilst driving to see his daughter, Ridpath sees a semi-naked young man run into the busy road. The man looks frightened for his life and following his gaze, Ridpath sees a man with a gun standing by the side of the road. The first young man is unfortunately hit and killed by a lorry before Ridpath can react, and when the police arrive to investigate, the other drivers claim not to have seen the gunman.

I thought this was a great follow-up to the first book. The pacing is excellent, the main character is engaging, and I found myself eager to read the next chapter. The only downside was the overuse of superiors failing to listen to Ridpath to their detriment. I did notice that Ridpath seems to spend quite a bit of time noting the appearance of one (as yet) minor character, and I wonder if this is an indication that romance will blossom further through the series if things do not work out with his wife.

Thanks to NetGalley and publishers, Canelo, for the opportunity to review an ARC.

I have just read this while trying to play catch up with myTBR pile and catch up with series of books.
I really do like the main Character in this book 'Ridpath.
I was thrilled to be able to dive in this second instalment of the DI Ridpath series. It certainly didnt dissapoint.
What I also like is the fact that I know a lot of the places as living around the area means you visualise locations so differently. I think this is the first time i've read a book that mentions a little village called Partington.
DI Ridpath, is part of the Greater Manchester Major Incident Team, although he is working for Mrs Challinor the Coroner, I like the fact that he's working for the coroner as i think it adds a real interesting elemnt to the cases he's working on.
For me this book was as good, if not better than book one. I look forward to continuing to get to know Ridpath and other characters as this series builds. I just know it's going to be a corker of a series.

A new author for me but this was an action packed, hard hitting thriller that had a twist in the tail that was not expected.
The story starts with a sighting of a man with a gun chasing a semi naked man across a motorway and the subsequent death of the man… no one else has seen the man with the gun and so this sighting by a DI is disregarded. The story revolves around firstly establishing that this sighting was real and then tracking the killers of the man on the motorway together with associated murders none of which appears to be connected at first glance. The murders are of young men who are related to gangland bosses in Manchester and this has the makings of a garland war as each thinks the other side is responsible…Excellent pathology and forensics that back up a hunch and some serious police work by a DI who is not currently flavour of the month end with the murderers being apprehended… great story… loved it.
This is the second in the series and I have not, and probably will not, read the first one but I will certainly read the follow on stories. The characters are tough but all have a human side. The illness of DI Ridpath runs through the story and adds to the interest. The background of Manchester, a city I know well, was good and the interaction of the characters kicking against diversity and political correctness was real and believable.
