I don’t think I have ever read three books in a series so quickly! One after the other!!
This instalment was darkly chilling, gripping and grisly. Any murder is brutal and Nadine Matheson has a very clear way of showing that to the reader, including details that made me wrinkle my face as I read.
Finally we discover more about Henley’s past, not only from her childhood, which haunts her to this day, but also a threat to the reputation of her old boss Rhimes, who I felt I already knew, as he has been talked about in the previous two books.
There are so many layers to this series, each worthy of their own subplot. Ramouter, an important supporting character, facing his own life issues, whilst also trying to be on top form as a police officer. The plot is never rushed (although don’t mistake that for lack of tension, of which there is loads!). It is developed with care and precision, nothing is left out, although the reader is left always wanting to know a bit more.
Again the author tackles social issues, how police officers are viewed, women in the force and in positions of authority, marital issues, dementia, counselling and dealing with grief - none of which are a ‘quick fix’ which is demonstrated clearly.
A really interesting and unique case to investigate, certainly not an easy one either as the kills start mounting up. The tension is palpable as it mounts towards another thrilling conclusion.
I am very relieved to know I don’t have to wait too long for Book 4. I will be waiting!! There are so many areas from this and the previous books that I want to know more about.
