Der Polizeibeamte Matthias Blum ist korrupt und kassiert bei zwei Prostituierten ab. Auch nimmt er deren Leistungen gerne in Anspruch und lebt seine sadistischen Phantasien aus.
Eines Tages wird er tot in seinem Auto aufgefunden, schnell findet das Ermittlerteam um Oberkommissarin Katharina Rosenberg heraus, dass es Mord ist.
Der Mörder hat den Toten so getötet, wie der Mörder aus Blums größten Fall, den er mit dem Polizeipsychologen Christian Moll gelöst hat.
Dann wird ein weiterer Kommissar getötet, der auch mit Moll zusammengearbeitet hat.
Ist der Mörder hinter Moll her? Ist Katharina sicher, denn auch sie hat mit ihm zusammengearbeitet?
Mit "Kainsmal" hat der Autor Marcus Hünnebeck einen fesselnden und spannenden Thriller geschrieben, dessen Spannungsbogen die ganze Zeit auf einem hohen Level bleibt, wofür der Autor mit seinen falschen Fährten sorgt.
Der Einstieg ist echt super, der Leser wird gleich in die Geschichte reingeworfen. Der Schreibstil ist schnell, flüssig und sehr fesselnd. Der Autor Marcus Hünnebeck hat mich mit seinen Worten schnell in den Bann gezogen und die kurzen Kapitel/Abschnitte und der stete Szenenwechsel sorgten dafür, dass ich immer weiter lesen wollte.
Die Charaktere sind gut dargestellt und wie aus dem Leben gegriffen, es gibt sympathische wie Katharina Rosenberg, aber auch echte Ekelpakete wie Matthias Blum.
Katharina ist eine starke Frau, trotz dem schweren Schicksal, welches sie erleiden musste. Sie ist mir gleich ans Herz gewachsen.
Dieser Thriller bekommt eine klare Leseempfehlung von mir und natürlich 5 Sterne *****

Juni 2014 sowohl als E-Book als auch im Taschenbuchformat bei Amazon Publishing veröffentlicht wurde, hat neben einem fundierten Lektorat sowie einem Korrektorat auch eine professionelle Umschlaggestaltung durch die renommierte Münchner Agentur bürosüd° erfahren.
Mit 174 Seiten ist “Kainsmal” ein recht kurzes Vergnügen, das mir immerhin einen spannenden Nachmittag beschert hat. Sicherlich hätten andere Autoren ein Buch mit mindestens 300 Seiten aus dieser Story gemacht. Das Potenzial dazu hat sie allemal. Marcus Hünnebeck aber beschränkt sich (manchmal leider zu sehr) auf das Wesentliche und lässt in seinem Thriller dadurch erst gar keine Längen entstehen. Er erzählt durchgehend in einem hohen Tempo mit prägnanten Sätzen eine sauber durchdachte Geschichte. Bis zum Showdown legt der Autor falsche Fährten und präsentiert in den insgesamt 29 knackigen Kapiteln den ein oder anderen falschen Verdächtigen.
Mit Katharina Rosenberg hat er eine toughe Ermittlerin ins Leben gerufen. Allerdings muss sie im Privaten mit einer Tragödie leben, die sich dem Leser erst allmählich erschließt. Dass Marcus Hünnebeck diese verletzliche Seite der sonst so couragierten Kommissarin beleuchtet, tut der Figur Katharina Rosenberg sehr gut.
“Kainsmal” ist trotz seines zierlichen Umfangs ein mitreißender Thriller, der mich vom Können des Autors überzeugt hat.
Mit “Die Drahtzieherin” kam am 7. April 2015 der zweite Band der Reihe auf den Markt. 230 Seiten hat der Nachfolger und damit im Vergleich zu Teil eins gut 60 Seiten mehr.
Inzwischen hat Marcus Hünnebeck Anschluss an einen Verlag gefunden. Am 3. September 2015 wird bei Egmont LYX sein Thriller “Im Auge des Mörders” veröffentlicht. In dieser Reihe spielen die Journalistin Eva Haller und der Leibwächter Stefan Trapp die Hauptrollen.

Fairness in reviewing is a big deal to me; while realizing my personal tastes dictate the outcome, the cons here almost outweigh the pros of this plot. The problem, from my POV, is that all the storyline twists have previously been used and abused, so not much new here to be enticed by. The protagonist's personality was rather flat, and I couldn't work up much enthusiasm for the other characters either. But finish it, I did... simply not wanting to waste the time already invested, and hoping for some major climatic events. I'm rating a generous three stars, in case "something" was lost in translation...

It seems there are a lot of female police detectives in Germany, according to the books I've read recently, and all of them are emotionally damaged. For some it's divorce, others lost their families in some way or other, and most are self-destructive. This book is a prime example of that. The writing is enjoyable enough, but there's absolutely no attempt at anything new here; it's completely by the numbers. The plot "twist" at the end makes me think more soap opera than mystery, as that's where it had been used and overused. In the end I was left dissatisfied.

Another quick read and another quite satisfying one.
I was drawn into this story very quickly - the author finds a rhythm very quickly to keep the reader turning the pages from the outset. In a short novella-length book, that is so very important to me.
The interactions between Katharina and Christian were great, making the story flow really well. The little bit of Katharina's backstory also helped to give some history between this pair. That was appreciated, especially considering the length of the story.
I do love red herrings in stories - and the ones in this book are well thought out, well placed and well executed. Sometimes authors get caught up in trying to be too clever - that wasn't the case here.
All in all, a very good story and one worth investigating.

Mark of Cain is a short, fast read. It doesn't take long to get sucked into the story...my only qualm concerning this book was it's length. At 150 pages, I barely had time to get to like the characters and get involved with them as a reader should. Don't get me wrong, the author develops the main characters brilliantly given limited page count. He's even able to brilliantly weave in quite a bit of Katharina's back story - which is something I would have enjoyed reading more about. But that's all just my personal preferences. In this hustle and hurry world, this book is perfect for a quick read on a train, plane, or sitting in a doctors office (which around here, can and does take several hours at times).
All in all though, as I've mentioned in a few of my reviews - as a reader, I want an escape from reality with the books I read...I want an interesting story with life-like characters; this book gives all that but I can only give it four stars because I really believe the quality might have been even more enhanced with more length and more character details. As a reader, I not only want to get that escape, I have to enjoy the characters that are taking me on that journey. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

Zusammen mit dem Profiler Chris Moll, der sich zwar aus dem aktiven Dienst zurück gezogen hat geht Katharina auf die Jagd sprich nimmt die Suche nach dem Mörder auf. Währenddessen lernen wir die Protagonistin besser kennen und erfahren einiges aus ihrer Vergangenheit. Inzwischen geschehen weitere Morde, jeweils auch an Kommissaren, die mit Mordernittlungen betraut waren. Nach und nach kommt Katharina weiter, manchmal auch auf Unverständnis stoßend. Der Autor hat dabei den Plotgenial entwickelt und blieb sprachlich gut verständlich, so dass der Leser dieses Buch nicht nur gut lesen kann, es fehlt auch nicht an Spannung. Und diese steigert sich kontinuierlich, so dass man immer weiter lesen muss, denn schließlich will man wissen, wie das ganze endet. Auch wenns durchaus vorauszusehen ist, hat das zumindest mein. Vergnügen kaum vermindert. Fpr mich ein toller Auftakt, den ich gerne auch empfehle und insgesamt mit vier Sternen bewerte. Habe große Lust auf mehr.

A very quick read, interesting and suspenseful. One of my pet peeves is when red herrings make no sense, go nowhere and are never properly explained away. Mark of Cain never makes this mistake. The red herrings are so well thought of, even after they were explained away I kept going over them, not sure whether I should trust that they had never been important to begin with. The resolution was a little silly (the butler didn't do it, but close) but the tension was still well-maintained even after the murdered is revealed.

I actually gave this book 4 stars. I made it through this book in 1 day. I won't post spoilers, because I hate ruining it for others.
I can tell you that it is a suspense thriller - a damaged female police detective in Germany is looking for a serial cop killer. While it does lack a little originality, I appreciate the twists! What's a "Who done it" without those... Mark of Cain did keep my interest from the beginning to the end. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good detective drama.

I feel like I have read this book before. i think it's because I felt like it didn't bring much orginal twists or turns to the book. Even with that it was still a decent read that kept my interest from the beginning to the end. The main character seemed sort of flat in the personality department. I will say the plot twist at the end of the book was pretty interesting and in a way reminded me of a soap opera.

Detective Katharina is on the case to find a cop killer. The only common connection is criminal psychologist Chris Moll. They have some sparks and a past so working together could pose a problem. I was sure I had the killer by page 100 then a twist came, but I still figured it out. This was a quick read and while simmilar in plot to many other stories still very fun to read.

It was translated from German so some of the sentence structure is a little stilted but it is an easy read, an interesting story and has believable characters. The story has a nice twist and keeps your attention well. I enjoyed reading this book and you will too,

Okay
Although, I like the lead detective and most of the story, I felt that the plot twist toward the end was rushed and pedestrian unfortunately.

Excellent translation from the original German but pretty weak material.
