This best-selling series comes to a rousing conclusion as Celie and her family set sail on a ship made from their beloved castle! After constructing a grand ship built from parts of the Castle, Celie, Lilah and Rolf are ready to set sail! But on its maiden voyage, the ship steers them far off course into uncharted waters. Celie and her sister, Lilah, hope that the ship is heading to the ancient island where unicorns once roamed, but as the journey grows longer and supplies run low, they could be in trouble. Can Celie and her family trust the ship just as they've always trusted the castle? Listeners will delight in this adventure-filled conclusion to Jessica Day George's best-selling series.
Jessica Day George likes chocolate, knitting, books, travel, movies, dragons, horses, dogs, and her family. These are all things to keep in mind if you ever meet her. For instance, you could bring her chocolate to make the meeting go more smoothly. You could also talk about how adorable her children are, even if you have never seen them. You could discuss dog breeds (she had a Maltese named Pippin, and grew up with a poodle mix and a Brittany Spaniel. Right now she has a Coton de Tulear named Sunny). You could talk about Norway, and how it's the Greatest Place On Earth, and Germany, The Second Greatest Place On Earth. You could ask her about yarn, and indicate a willingness to learn to knit your own socks, if you can't already do so.
And, well, you could talk about books. Jessica's books, other people's books. It's really all about the books. To paraphrase Jerry Seinfeld: Friends, family, school, they were just obstacles in the way of getting more books.
She would like it if books came with chocolate to eat while reading them.
In the fifth and, as of right now, final book about Celie and Castle Glower, Celie and her family find themselves far from home as they visit the Kingdom of Grath and finish building the griffin-headed ship.
May 2016: Copyedits!
August 2025: Read aloud to the family for . . . reasons!
I have now read the entire Tuesdays at the Castle series. I feel that the first book was the best and I read the rest out of loyalty to the original idea. I think the author erred in thinking that I would care so much about the history of the Castle and why the magic worked. I really wanted magical adventure and this book had very little of that. There wasn't even anything that could be considered conflict until after page 100. She simply had too many ends to tie up and I think that was probably because she hadn't originally planned the series. If she had put some of the details in earlier books, we could have gotten on the boat about 75 pages sooner. All that said, it was fun for the most part and Celie as a character is a young girl that I would not mind my daughter looking up to. She's good at maps, intuitive and drives the story in every book. Heroines like her are too hard to find. I hope to find one like her again but this time in a story where things actually happen.
What a great ending to a fun series! I loved the idea of being at sea, but still being connected to the castle and I loved the new adventures and additional characters. Just like the first four books in the series, I could not put this one down! I love the Glower family, Lulath, Pogue and, of course, the furry members of the family, too. I'm sad that the series is over, but loved the way it ended.
The feels are real with this book (actually the entire five book series). I am sobbing because this is the final book in the series and it appears there will be no more. Although the ending, while a perfectly suitable ending, left an opening for a book 6 (in my humble opinion)! A gal can dream, right?!
So this book is what I believe they call middle grade/juvenile fiction. I am neither a middle grader nor a juvenile. I also should add I have no children. I purchased this series for me and I’m quite pleased with myself. Good job Tisha.
Obviously it was an easy read. But it was wildly entertaining. And I was very emotional at times. Jessica Day George is a phenomenal writer. I’m looking forward to starting a new series of hers. But boy will I miss the Castle, the Griffins and Celie and the gang!
This was a good book as part of the series, but a disappointing finale. It really didn't feel like a finale at all, aside from the fact that George was clearly trying to tie up lose ends. But because there was so much to tie up, the actual adventure part felt really rushed and there wasn't any real sense of suspense or consideration that things might not work out.
Overall, I do enjoy the series and the characters. Celie and Rufus are fun, and I've enjoyed how her relationship with her family has developed over the course of the series. Of course, she's still rather young at the end of this book, so there's hints of romance and we assume how things are going to go, but it's too early to tie up those particular threads - but I am a fan of Pogue.
Anyway -
I'm just sort of left wondering how a series which names it's books after the days of the week is going to stop at 5 and not just go for the whole 7? There's a lot more character and world to explore here and, like I said, for a finale book this one ended up being rather underwhelming.
This was one of my favourite series when I was younger, and I was really looking forward to this last book, and then I just found I didn't care anymore... which is why it's been out for almost a year, and I still hadn't read it until today.
This was a really fun read. It's quick, and easy, and humorous. It tied up the series nicely, and I quite enjoyed it. It lacked the spark that makes a book amazing for me, but I think this is an amazing series for a younger kid.
(This review is probably going to have slight spoilers for the earlier books in the series. I'm afraid it's sort of unavoidable. None from this book though.)
PLOT
The plot of this was sweet. It was fairly unrelated to the earlier books, but it tied up a few loose ends, as well as allowing them to have a whole new adventure. As an older reader, I didn't find the plot particularly interesting, mostly because, it being a middle grade book, I sort of knew it would end out all right for everyone. That always makes a plot less interesting. If I'd been a bit younger though, I know I would have been on the edge of my seat, wanting to know what was going to happen.
SETTING
I love the setting in these books! The earlier books take place in this wonderful, magical castle, that's almost like a character itself. This book takes place on a ship that they've made, partially from things they've found in the castle. This means that, although it's not as wonderful as the castle, it, like the castle, has a will of it's own.
The setting could have been better, because you can imagine that a book taking place mostly on a ship, no matter how magical that ship is, isn't *that* interesting. Still, I love the setting, even if not as much as the setting in the earlier books.
CHARACTERS
I really like the characters in this. They are so rich, and well developed. And funny. Very very funny. Which is obviously what I really care about. I'm going to give a quick list of characters I like, because why not?
-Celie. Our MC... she's well developed... I don't really don't know what else to say. She's likeable enough, I just don't *love* her.
-Rolf. I swear Rolf just gets funnier and funnier. He cracks me up, and he's probably my favourite character.
-Lilah. Lilah is ladylike and proper, which doesn't exactly endear her to me, but I actually really like her.
-Lulath. Lulath is great. He's just about the nicest person ever, he has a love for animals, he dresses very fancily, and he likes battle tactics. Yup, that's a pretty strange combination of things.
-Pogue. I really like Pogue. By the end, he's probably one of the characters who's been developed the most, and he's just sort of great.
-Celie's Mom. Whatever her name is. I really love that Celie has a great, supportive family. They aren't perfect, but who is? And her mom really is a great character. She seems calm and queenly, but she's actually pretty badass!
OVER ALL
This is a really sweet book. It's a great read for a younger kid, and still enjoyable enough for me. I was just too young for it.
July 2022 reread: I was not as enthralled by this one as the others. I think, like Celie, I really missed the Castle with its shifting rooms and corridors. And I was not satisfied by the ending as a conclusion to a great series, somehow. Maybe the end was too short. But for the most part it was still a thrilling adventure filled with family, friendship, and animals.
*** 2018 Why do great series have to end? Although somehow Tuesdays has the most charm, this last installment kept me reading eagerly. I think George might have a slight fondness for animals...;)
**SPOILERS** I have two disappointments, though: I hoped to 'witness' Lulath and Lilah's wedding and for the ending of the book to have some scene pointing to Celie and Pogue being together in the future.
Yay! These books are so cute. A couple years ago, I presented Tuesday's at the Castle for a book talk in my college course and presented an argument on why this book would be great to recommend/keep in a classroom library for upper elementary and middle school students. That was a while ago but I remember there was never a question of which book to choose for that assignment because even then I was reading everything and anything written by Jessica Day George. I've read every book in this series since then, and legitimately enjoy them even though I am not the target audience. Never too old!
While this last book in the series was still plenty cute and entertaining (and BONUS POINTS: the queen even got to go along for the ride this time! Yay, for involved parents in a children's book!), I unfortunately didn't connect with it as much as the previous ones. I think it was because we had all this buildup for three books about "There are unicorns to be found!" and then we spent the majority of the story on a boat and only got the unicorns in the last 20%. There was also this entire new civilization with only 20% of book to explore it and by the end... I don't know. I guess I felt like, "That's it? That's the end?" I even re-listened to the end because it felt like I'd missed something, but no. *shrug*
I'm giving this book 3 stars because I didn't hate it, but didn't love it anywhere near as much as I'd hoped to. Just don't promise me unicorns for three books and then give me 80% boat+dangerous journey and only 20% unicorns. I wanted the unicorns.
Content Advisory:
Violence: Everyone's lives are in peril a few times during the book, but no one gets seriously injured, much less killed. In fact, I don't recall anyone even getting injured.
Romance: Lilah and... I'm sorry, I listened on audio and have no idea how to spell his name... [insert what's-his-name here] are in love and engaged to be married. Their romance never gets more than cutesy and sweet. At one point, the queen wants Celie to stay with the couple so they won't be alone. Celie figures it's because her mother doesn't want them to spend the whole time kissing.
Magic: Just like how the castle in the previous books was magically sentient, so is the boat in this book once it gets built properly. It knows things no one else does and has the ability to sail itself with zero input from the passengers.
This one was so fun (of course)! It definitely felt different since it wasn't centered around the castle (maybe in some ways). There was some good character development which I am always a fan of. Also Pogue. Don't get me started I love him. And Rolf getting a little romance I have been waiting for this since the first book!!! I don't know if there will be a Sundays... or Mondays..., but if that does happen I will faithfully read them!
This is the end of Celie's adventures. The end of the Glower family. Why does it have to end?? I know it does, but... Well, I suppose I'll have to reread them. Once I buy the last four.
To be honest, I was a little disappointed with this one. It's the last in the series; I expected it to grand and amazing! But, well, it... wasn't. It started at a slow pace, then the middle felt like a big conglomeration of things, and then the end felt forced.
However, while this was a bit disappointing, I will always love Celie and the others. It was still good. I could never give Celie less than four stars. It's painful to give it four stars, but I want to be honest.
I really liked meeting Lulath's family! I only wish we had scenes with all his brothers. That would be GREAT! But I really loved King Kurlath and Queen Amatopeia. And Orlath was amazing!
What's up with Lilah and Pogue? I mean, what's her problem with him? She's always so stiff with him. He was Celie's escort to the ball and she was like, "But only to the ball. Orlath will dance with you." What's her problem?? And I shippppppp themmmmmmm! Celie and Pogue are perfect for each other. I would've loved an epilogue with Lilah and Lulath married, Celie and Pogue together, etc.
So... I don't like Kalys. I don't see her with Rolf. I don't see her being queen. I don't ship them. She's the only reason the ship took them through the Well?? That was... anticlimactic.
I loved the unicorn thing! Though I'm not a huge fan of Lilah, I think it's wonderful that she finally got the unicorns she wanted.
Pogue is the best. He will always be my favorite character. He supports Celie. I loved the scene where he was saying that her family treated her like a child all of the time, then expected her to figure out what the Castle/Ship wanted. He understands her. They are perfect for each other. Jessica, please write another book with Celie and Pogue together. I need that!
This was another sweet story about Celie. It was really good! I just feel like things weren't connected well. That could've been because I took a while to finish it. It usually doesn't take me six days to finish a Castle Glower book. I miss you, Celie and Pogue and Rolf and Bran and Lilah and Lulath! Until we meet again.
The Castle Glower series is going a little bit the way of the Wide-Awake Princess series, in my opinion. There’s definitely things that are connecting each book together, but each book feels more tired and pale than the last. Too many old formulas are used and there’s not enough variety to spice it up. As a book series for kids, I can see why George would rely on things she’s used before, but for me as an adult, I don’t find them compelling any more.
If you like the formula of the Castle Glower books, Saturdays at Sea continues in that vein: lots of griffins, some humor, and more revelations about the world and the Castle. In this book, unicorns are introduced, and I did like that George showed them in a different way than you would think of unicorns today. There’s a small amount of characterization with Celie, but not really enough to make any big character changes. These sorts of books tend to keep their characters the same way, which is probably what bothers me the most.
If you liked the other books in the series, then you will probably enjoy this one, too. For me, it was too much of the same-old, same-old, and not enough improvement in terms of writing or characterization. There’s also way too many animals—dogs and griffins and now unicorns are all jostling for position alongside a healthy cast of characters. I definitely would go back and read Tuesdays at the Castle again, but I don’t really want to re-read any of the others.
Adorable and so much fun, as always! At this point I feel like these characters are my family and reading the series is like coming home.
Idk if I'm reading into stuff too much but I really feel like the Pogue x Celie feels ive had since the series began were seriously validated in this book, only I couldn't even enjoy it because I know the age gap would make that squicky. Would kill for a spin-off series with the characters aged up a bit! JDG managed to keep Dragon Slippers a kids series and Creel was like 20 in the last book!
Anyhow, I couldn't tell if this was supposed to be the final book in the Castle Glower series or not! It didn't have a tone of finality to it, but it also didn't set anything up for another adventure. Hopefully JDG does a full week for the series (with Sunday and Monday left to cover) because this is the only series with releases I have to look forward to!
3 but 4 stars for the series as a whole. I enjoyed this one, but didn't think it was a great finale. It felt a little lacking. I liked visiting Lulath's land and seeing the differences. But I didn't like that the characters weren't all togethter at the castle. I would like to get to know the King more, I think he was overlooked. Of course all the griffins and unicorns are fun and magical! I think the Castle Glower deserves an encore!
One slight annoyance- the artwork for the cover is different than the rest of the series. This artist makes Celie more glamorous and I like her better looking spunky!
The boat being an extension of the castle was fun, though it would have been interesting to spend more time on the new civilization and the unicorns.
The writing style of the series hasn't been my favorite, and it's bothered me more the further on the series I got. The dialogue and the characters' reactions were specifically what bothered me.
I still loved the first book best and overall I think it's a cute series, especially for young girls.
Why is this a conclusion?!! What happens on Sundays and Mondays?!!? I want more! This is now one of my new favourite series of all time. But I need to know what happens on those two remaining days of the week!! Gah!
This magical series just keeps taking me to better and better places. With Celie growing up and now unicorns being monsters! Geez. What a great book! next please.
I loved this whole series. Saturdays at Sea was no different. It might even be my favorite of all of them. Although I'm sad this is the last book, it was a great ending.
Celie and her family are far away from the Castle in the land of Grath, preparing for Lilah's betrothal celebrations, and overseeing the construction of a Ship with components from the Castle. The Ship appears to have many of the same magical qualities that the Castle has, but can the Glower family trust that the Ship will protect and guide them, or does the Ship have its own agenda?
I adore the entire Glower family, and Celie is just as spunky and adventurous as always. I was interested to see this new side of the Castle-magic infused into the Ship, and the magical development in the story is wonderful! The plot drags a little bit at first, with lots of betrothal parties and parades, but once the Ship is at sea the adventure truly begins.
I really loved the mystery of the lost unicorns, and how that influenced so many of the characters and their decisions. I was especially interested in the differing reports they received about the history of the unicorns and why they were lost in the first place, which served as some interesting red herrings in the plot.
I only wish there were more books in this series! It's a good ending, but I want more!
I love Castle Glower, not just the series, but the actual Castle, so I wasn't sure how I felt about a Castle Glower book without the Castle. My worries were in vain. Really, as long as I have Celie, I'm happy.
I loved so much about this book. I loved that Lulath is the warrior of his family. I loved his parents and brother. I loved the dogs - oh the dogs! Most of all, I loved that Celie found her voice and got to say what we've all been thinking - quit telling her she's the Castle whisperer and then get mad at her when she tells you what the Castle wants or needs!
What I didn't love
It's a pleasant romp with Celie and company and I only missed the Castle a little bit.
A solid exciting ending of the Castle Glower series!
Being an ocean lover, I love anything that has to do with the sea, and truly enjoyed that they went out on a voyage with the Golden Griffin. The writing is fast-paced with lovely details here and there, and I like how Queen Celine, their mother takes a key role in this last book. She finally gets to show off her amazing powers! Props to Jessica Day George for inserting the women empowerment agenda in such a natural and smooth way.
The ending is simply superb and if anything I only wished there was an epilogue chapter with everyone back at the Castle.
I enjoyed this book, but not quite as much as the rest of the series. I liked the beginning of their big adventure, but as it continued, I got a little tired of the fact that it was mostly just one big conflict. In the other books there have been multiple small conflicts intertwined with each other, keeping you on the edge of your seat, just waiting for something new and exciting to occur. In this one, there are still multiple conflicts, but they don't each reel you in. Most of them are just resolved very quickly after they begin.
Ever since Thursdays With the Crown, things just went downhill. I had high hopes for this book, and I was not disappointed! The series truly redeemed itself with Saturdays at Sea. Not too fast-paced, not too Slow-paced, but the Goldilocks of all the sequels! I hope this series continues to keep me satisfied if it continues, as I highly recommend it to magic-lovers!
Really enjoyed flying through this series. This final installment meandered a bit and ended abruptly and I felt like it left a few things unresolved, but it was still a fun adventure. I plan to do a more comprehensive series review in the near future.
A lovely conclusion to a delightful series. Great fun for junior high and middle school readers and listeners, and a pleasant experience for read-aloud parents.
Celie is such an amazing character and i can’t let go of her. I just don’t want any of the characters to go away. I’m so sad to leave this series, but excellent book!!!!!! ☺️
