Mary Higgins Clark holds a special place in the hearts of many readers, including mine. That's why I dived into reading the latest book in the Under Suspicion series as soon as I had a chance, And from that dive, I was totally sucked into Laurie Moran's mission to crack the case of a seriously messed-up murder.

As the previous books, 'It Had to Be You' continues to captivate readers with its blend of mystery and intrigue. At its center is Laurie Moran, the dedicated producer of a true crime television show committed to unraveling cold cases. Surrounding Laurie are a cast of supportive characters, both in her professional and personal life, adding depth and warmth to the narrative.

In this latest installment, Laurie is approached by a young woman seeking assistance in solving the long-unsolved murder of her parents. The prime suspects? Her identical twin brothers, who were never formally charged. With tensions running high and familial bonds strained, the brothers reluctantly agree to participate in the show, driven by love for their sister and the hope of uncovering the truth. Yet, as Laurie delves deeper into the case, she uncovers twists and turns that challenge everything she thought she knew.

As expected from a Mary Higgins Clark novel, the story is a delightful blend of lightness and depth, perfect for a cozy afternoon curled up with a book or a lazy day at the beach. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the series or just looking for a killer read, this book is a must-have for your shelf.

I absolutely adore how effortlessly I can dive into the next installment of the captivating Under Suspicion series. Once again, Laurie steps into the spotlight with another intricate case awaiting her keen investigative skills. This time, the spotlight falls on twin brothers accused of the unthinkable - murdering their parents, albeit with a compelling twist. Each sibling points the finger at the other, and being identical twins, the truth seems an elusive mystery. Laurie, with her trademark investigative brilliance, returns to the fray. True to form, she orchestrates her investigation through her television show, Under Suspicion, compelling suspects to face the cameras and confront their truths head-on.

This latest addition to the series is succinct yet enthralling, propelling the reader forward with each turn of the page. The story effortlessly maintains its pace, ensuring readers remain fully engaged from start to finish. Characters are easily distinguishable and some even manage to win over our affections. I did wish for a few more pages. Here's hoping for another gripping installment soon!

Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for granting me the opportunity to delve into this ARC and share my thoughts.

Mary Higgins Clark was one of my mother’s favorite authors. Even though both my mother and Clark have passed away, I still rush to read anything associated with the author’s name. I guess I do it to keep up the tradition. I have to admit, though, I do enjoy her mysteries, benign though they may be.

This is the eighth in the Under Suspicion series and I have read all of them. The series centers on Laurie Moran, producer of a true crime television show that tries to solve cold cases. She is surrounded by a cast of supportive characters both at work and at home.

Laurie is contacted by a young woman who would like the show’s help in solving the murder of her parents years ago. Her identical twin brothers were under suspicion for the deaths but not charged and the local police really never looked beyond those two suspects. Now estranged, the brothers agree to participate in the show out of love for their sister and perhaps in hopes of finding out which one of them is guilty. Of course, all is not as it seems and there are twists to the story that Laurie helps uncover.

This is a typical MHC book; light, quick, easy reading and I couldn’t put it down. It is perfect for curling up on a rainy day or saving for a beach vacation. The story is solid; some of the repeating characters are a bit “too perfect”, but what is so wrong with a little bit of saccharin right now?

Ten years prior, identical twin brothers, Simon and Ethan, along with their younger sister Frankie, had lost their parents in a brutal murder. It happened on the night of the boys' graduation party, and it was believed that one brother killed their parents, while the other was the alibi. Nothing was proven; the case was cold, the brothers and their families estranged. When almost twenty two year old Frankie got in touch with Laurie Moran, producer of the Under Suspicion show, whose reputation was always solving the cold case, Laurie was excited about the premise. But would this be the case that stumped her, a case she couldn't solve? Frankie just wanted her brothers and their families back together again, with her by their sides once more.

Laurie and her team dug deeply, discovering certain things the police had missed ten years ago. They were ready to put the show to air; to identify the killer of Sarah and Richard Harrington - Laurie's usual nerves were eating at her, but she was quietly confident...

It Had to Be You is the 8th in the Under Suspicion series by Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke and it was a fast paced, gripping and intense read which I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm not sure if there will be any more in the series, as Ms Clark passed away in 2020, but I'd like there to be. An excellent series, I've really loved the ride! Highly recommended.

Mary Higgins Clark is a great mystery writer so I was heppy to pick up a copy of this book. It is another good one! This is the eighth book in the Under Suspicion series, but is easily read as a stand alone.

Description:
In the latest thrilling entry in the bestselling Under Suspicion series by Queen of Suspense Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke, television producer Laurie Moran investigates the unsolved murder of a beloved couple celebrating the college graduations of their successful twin sons.

The two identical brothers seemed perfect in every way—handsome, intelligent, popular—until a shocking summer night when one brother killed his parents in cold blood while the other brother had an iron-clad alibi. Featuring chilling suspense, a cast of characters whom loyal readers have come to love, and a final jaw-dropping twist, It Had to Be You is not to be missed.

My Thoughts:
These murders were horrible and tore the entire family apart. With the twin brothers characterized as "the Deadly Duo" and suspecting each other, they were estranged from each other with only their sister Frankie as a connection. When Laurie Moran, the producer of a true crime series gets involved through Frankie, the investigation has a new focus and hidden truths begin to be revealed yielding some surprising revelations. This is the kind of book that will kept me flipping pages to find out what really happened. I recommend to anyone who likes a good mystery or for true crime buffs.

Thanks to Simon & Schuster through Netgalley for an advance copy.

Ten years ago, on the night of her twin brothers' college graduation party, Frankie Harrington's parents left the party and were murdered in their home. The outside camera showed the arrival of the vehicle driven by the boys to the party but not who was in it. Someone witnessed that he had seen one of the boys near the van in the parking lot of the yacht club but could not tell which one. The police suspected one or both of the twins but did not have proof to charge them. Each twin blames the other. At twenty-one, Frankie wants the truth.

Laurie Moran, the director of Under Suspicion, a true-crime broadcast, is searching for her next case when Frankie calls her. Laurie has successfully solved several cases that the crew has investigated. After Laurie meets Frankie and her brothers, she desperately wants to find both boys innocent. As she digs into the investigation, she finds that the police of the small town botched the investigation by not checking out other suspects. Now, Laurie needs to find the truth before someone dies.

I have enjoyed Mary Higgins Clark's writing for years and was sad when she died. I was delighted to see that her co-writer, Alafair Burke, in the Under Suspicion series continued the characterization of the earlier books, kept out bad language, and kept the story clean, just as Clark had done. Though I did suspect the actual killer about halfway through, Burke threw in a twist I did not see coming. The story was a delightful page turner for me.

Mary Higgins Clark is an author that I used to read as a teenager, and she proves once again that she’s still got it. I will admit, I haven’t read any of Alafair Burke’s solo work, but I’ll definitely check it out now.

There were some hints throughout the book that Laurie, the producer of a true crime show, was more than a passing character, but I appreciated the vague descriptions of her previous life, since I hope to read the series from the beginning. This is the eighth entry in the “Under Suspicion” series, but it can be read as a standalone, in my opinion—although you will get some spoilers about Laurie’s current family situation.

I did think that the action took a while to get going, but I enjoyed figuring out who might be responsible when all of the suspects had been presented. I’m proud to say that part of my guess was correct, but Clark and Burke certainly did not make it easy! There are twists in here that will have you second guessing yourself, and that’s a big part of why thrillers are such a popular genre. Just when you think you’ve narrowed down the suspect list, BAM, here comes another suspicious person! It’s, dare I say, quite fun.

Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the advance copy in exchange for my honest feedback. I was thrilled (get it? 😁) to get my hands on an early copy of this! Look for this in just over a month!

I usually love this series. It’s one of my favorites.
This book fell flat for me. Nothing happened for the first half. Most of the good parts happened past 80%. I’ll keep reading the series but this one wasn’t a favorite. It was also more predictable than the other books.

I love reading books where the characters are familiar to me from previous books. This was about a murder that was not solved 10 years ago and it is now being investigated on television by the show Under Suspicion. Identical Twin brothers were celebrating their college graduation on the night that both of their parents were shot and killed. An eye witness put one of the brothers at the scene but neither would confess. In fact, each of the brothers thought the other brother did it and for 10 years they had lived separate lives. The brothers also had a sister who was 12 at the time. True crime television producer Laurie Moral investigates the murder along with her team. I enjoyed reading this book.

It Had To Be You is the latest installment in the Under Suspicion series by Mary Higgins Clarke and Alafair Burke. This book grabs you from the very start and doesn't let go! Ethan and Simon Harrington are identical twins accused of murdering their parents 10 years ago. The police could never prove if one of them did it or both of them did it. There was not enough evidence to arrest either brother so they've been living their lives under the shadow of the public thinking they did it. They were dubbed the Deadly Duo in the press. Simon blamed Ethan for the murders and Ethan blamed Simon for the murders Their sister, Frankie was very young when their parents were murdered and was never aware that her brothers were accused of the murders.

Laurie Moran is the host of a true crime television series called Under Suspicion. Frankie reaches out to Laurie as she's now old enough to want to know what really happened that night even if it means one or both of her brothers is guilty. Both of the twins are now married with kids of their own. They're leery of dredging up the past again, but agree to cooperate with Laurie when they see how important it is to Frankie. Both of the twins love their little sister and would do anything for her. The twins haven't seen each other in years and aren't thrilled with the idea of seeing each other now. What will the Under Suspicion team uncover about the murders? Were the parents the upstanding people that the community thought they were? Did anyone have reason to want them dead besides their sons? Why did their sons have reason to want them dead? What will be found by going through the boxes of their parents things? Will someone's memory be helped by the photographs? The closer Laurie and her team get to the truth, the more someone doesn't want the truth to come out. What will they do to stop the truth from coming out?

It Had to Be you is a fantastic thriller that will keep you guessing until the end. I love the idea of a murder mystery with twins involved and this did not disappoint! As Laurie and her team interview people you'll get little clues along the way. I rate It Had to Be You 5 stars with my highest recommendation. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for an advanced copy of It Had to Be You in exchange for a fair review. The book is available now and I advise you to get it and enjoy the ride! #ItHadToBeYou

The queen of suspense/mystery, Mary Higgins Clark joins forces with Alafair Burke for a chilling thriller. This is the latest installment of the Under Suspicion series & probably my favorite. We have twin brothers, murder, & an unbelievable cast of well written characters. Read the book - definitely read the series.

I think this "thriller" was trading on the good name of Mary Higgins Clark. I don't feel it was up to her usual standards. Yes, it had suspense and yes it had some plot twists. However, for me it was such a convoluted mess that I didn't really care by the end. I pretty much had it figured out.

The basics of the plot are similar to another book I recently read but that story was much fresher and more exciting and held my interest. This story felt "meh" to me.

Loved being able to read another installment in the Under Suspicion Series. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters. The plot twist was a surprise however I do feel like the story was a bit rushed. Regardless, it’s a treat to continue to read Mary’s work with the help of Alafair Burke. Interested to see if there is more to come.

This is the 8th book in the Under Suspicion series. Let's address the elephant in the room for some of us. You might be questioning the fact that you thought MHC passed away years back, and you'd be right. I had to look it up myself. She passed away in 2020., so. It seems that Alafair Burke is continuing the series for both.
In a true twisty turny, Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke fashion, this book will keep you in the edge of your seat like the prior books in the series. It had to be you flows flawlessly and will bring you the backstory of he past books, so I believe that you could easily read this book without reading the prior books.
Two twin boys seem to have it all when one boy kills their parents and the other has an alibi, but which boy is telling the truth and who is who. Ultimately, this fractures their relationship, and each boy is pointing the finger at each other. Both married with kids, the way to move on and try to put the past behind them aa best as they can so they turn to Laurie Morgan and her team with the TV show "Under Suspicion " who take in cold cases to help get to try and solve the murders and what actually happened the night their parents were murdered. This book had me hooked, and the ending had me wowed. This book made me want to go back and reread more MHC books and read Alafair Burke's stand-alone novels.

Solid book, a good short read but well executed. I’ve not read a book that’s left me feeling satisfied and happy at the same time. And given that I’ve not read the whole series, I found it easy to catch up the previous history about Laurie Moran herself without having any knowledge of the character. I found the writing, the plot easy to understand but I think the most important defining factor on why this book scored highly for me is the predictability aspect. I got my guess completely wrong, and it was like the pulling the carpet under your feet moment. Usually my hunches are correct a lot of the time but this time I was horrifically wrong.

I like the characters, they’re credible but well- written and could understand them more. Overall it’s a solid read one that I highly recommend those to get their hands on as it won’t disappoint.

Laurie Moran is a producer of a true crime series aired on television which focuses on solving cold cases and getting results. Moran is called my a young female, sister to the Deadly Duo brothers who have been accused of murdering their parents cold blooded. They were never formally charged with their murders but left the family in a rift, which Moran goes out her way to solve!

This was my first Mary Higgins Clark read. I know she's a super prolific author so I've had my eye on her stuff for a while. I liked how short and snappy the chapters were and this reminded me of a fun "airport" read. This book works totally fine as a standalone. In fact, I didn't even know it was part of a series when I read it.

There are a lot of characters right out of the gate so it takes a minute to get to know everyone and remember the character names, but then you have this whole cast of people with opposing feelings who are at odds with each other and that's perfect for a familial drama.

Thanks to Simon & Schuster for the advance copy. <3

This wasn't a particularly fascinating mystery, but the writing style was extremely easy to read and I quickly grew to like the characters, despite not having read the previous books where many of them seemingly appeared.

Simon and Ethan are identical twins and both are suspected of murdering their parents 10 years ago although this could never be proved. The boys have been estranged since the tragedy and both have lives with wives and children. They each believe the other committed the murders. Frankie, the twins' sister, hires Laurie Moran and her Under Suspicion crew to look into this cold case for closure to any doubts on the killer's identity. This is a very entertaining story with good character development and delves into the mysterious secrets kept by many of the potential suspects. Alafair Burke has done a fine job recreating the voice of the master, Mary Higgins Clark, and I continue to enjoy the Laurie Moran investigation series. 3.5 stars.

Is it worse to be suspected of murder, or to expose your life to a deep investigation?

Ten years ago, the parents of identical twins Ethan and SImon threw their sons a huge party near their vacation beach home south of Boston. Later that night the parents are found murdered in their home, and the local police quickly focus on one or both of the twins as being the murderer.. The case was never brought to trial, but the press dubbed the boys the “Deadly Duo” and the pall of suspicion hangs over both of them even ten years later. Each twin is convinced that the other killed their parents, and they have remain estranged. It is their younger sister Frankie who decides that it is time to resolve the matter once and for all, and she contacts TV producer Laurie Moran whose show, Under Suspicion” is known for finding new leads in cold cases and either clearing or convicting people long suspected of a crime. The brothers themselves are initially reluctant to bring the case back to the public’s attention, as are others in their orbit…and it turns out that the “perfect family’ had a lot of secrets that will be brought to light. Will Laurie and her crew be able to finally solve the case and, if so, will the twins and Frankie be better or worse off at the end?

This is the eighth installment of the “Under Suspicion” series collaboration between Alafair Burke (daughter of famed crime novelist James Lee Burke, as well as a successful author in her own right) and the late Mary Higgins Clark. That said, this book works perfectly well as a standalone novel, so readers who have not read any of the preceding books shouldn’t be put off. The character of Laurie Moran, who herself experienced the murder of a loved one and having to live under the glare of public interest, is compassionate towards the people whose cases she investigates. She also has to deal with office politics and an overly-ambitious co-worker. As she looks into the case, she is not convinced that either or both of the young men are in fact guilty; there are others who were and are close to the family who may have had a motive to kill one or both of the parents, and it soon becomes clear that the police did not do a thorough investigation. It Had to Be You is a quick and enjoyable read, and while I figured out who did it relatively early on it was still a fun read that Mary Higgins Clark fans will enjoy., as will those who enjoy true crime shows. Many thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for allowing me access to an early copy of this entertaining story.

Mini Book Review

It Had To Be You by Mary Higgins Clark & Alafair Burke

Blurb:
TV producer Laurie Moran investigates the unsolved murder of a beloved couple celebrating the college graduations of their successful twin sons. The seemingly perfect brothers aren’t so perfect, one has an alibi while the other doesn’t.. but one of them killed his parents.

✨My thoughts:
This book is part of a series and actually it’s the 8th book in the series! Even though I haven’t read the installments before this, the author’s did a great job writing this and I was able to read it without feeling lost. It’s definitely a slow burn, with the pacing not being my favorite but luckily it was still an enjoyable thriller. It just takes a bit of time to get to the good stuff. Overall, if you’re looking for a quick thrill, this is one you can read and enjoy. It Had To Be You is out now!

Happy reading 📖

4.5 stars - It Had to be You is the eighth book in the Under Suspicion series, but also works fine as a standalone. Alafair Burke and Mary Higgins Clark began this series, and I'm so happy that Burke has been able to continue it after Clark's death. The main character of the series is Laurie Moran who is the producer of a true crime television series that investigates cold cases in which the main suspect is still "under suspicion."

In this book, the sister of the "Deadly Duo", identical twins accused of killing their parents, contacts Laurie asking her to look into the case from ten years ago. Some think the twins were working together, but each brother claims he's innocent and blames the other one. Laurie and her team learn there were many things the police never looked at in the original investigation and think they may finally be able to get justice for the Harrington family.

I really enjoy this series and seeing Laurie and her team research the cases, conduct the interviews for the show, and face a killer on or off the air. The series also follows Laurie's personal life as a widow with a young son who is able to find happiness in her life. Laurie is a likeable main character. She is kind and compassionate, but isn't afraid to stand up for herself. This installment of the series has the perfect balance of Laurie with her family and on the job. The book alternates between Laurie's point-of-view and different members of the Harrington family, who I liked getting to know.

A string of dramatic events that helps Laurie get all the facts about the deaths of Sarah and Richard Harrington. I was surprised when the whole truth came out, but the aftermath of the revelation was a bit of a let down in how it affected some of the characters, but the overall ending was a good one.

I received an advance copy of this ebook at no cost from NetGalley and Simon and Schuster, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.

All the books in this series have been entertaining, and this one - the eighth - is no exception. Laurie Moran, producer of the "Under Suspicion" true crime TV show, is trying to work her magic despite ongoing squabbles with boss Brett Young and the show host, attorney Ryan Nichols.

Laurie gets an opportunity to revisit the unsolved case of a wealthy couple who, while celebrating the college graduation of twin sons Ethan and Simon, were brutally murdered in their home a decade ago. Thanks in part to an eyewitness, the police - and just about everyone else - are convinced that one of the twins did the dirty deed, but there's insufficient evidence to bring charges (and besides, the twins are identical, so who's to say which one it was)? The twins themselves, once very close, have become estranged - mostly because each thinks the other one is guilty.

An intriguing case for sure; but convincing everyone involved back then to revisit unhappy memories isn't an easy task. But it's one Laurie has taken on many times in the past, and she manages to corral most of the still-living people to be interviewed for the show in the hopes that new evidence will turn up to make the cold case (and her TV show) hot.

As the investigation continues, with help from Laurie's former-cop father Leo Farley, secrets from the past are revealed - some dead ends, others not. The end is a bit of a mess, actually - and a little hard for me to swallow. The characters, though, seemed to have little problem with the outcome, so I guess that's what counts most. Laurie's family gets a boost or two as well, but that's a secret other readers will have to learn for themselves. So until next time, I thank the publisher, via NetGalley, for allowing me to read and review a pre-release copy of this one.

Excellent mystery! Full of twists and turns. Just when I thought I had figured out who the murderer was, the story would take a turn and I found myself changing my mind. There was one line spoken by the true killer that sealed it for me. Then it all came together. And....aside from justice being served....there is a very big surprise at the end that had me cheering!

When I purchased the book I thought the premise sounded really interesting and still believe it is. The book had its good moments, however, I was able to identify the culprit early on. It also felt as though a few sub plots were half developed and forgotten about, only then to be wrapped up in a single sentence in the epilogue.
