Rate this book
A feisty outlaw.

A conniving prince.

A war of magic and shadows.

Wanted by the crown for a murder she didn't commit, Cora dreams of getting revenge on the mage who framed her. In the meantime, she hides in the forest and hones her witch magic. But when she discovers her enemy's violent hunt for faerie creatures, she forms a plan for vengeance.

Prince Teryn, heir to a bankrupt throne, will do anything to keep his country from sinking into ruin. When he meets an outlawed witch wanted by a neighboring kingdom, he gets his chance. The woman has an impressive bounty on her head, one that could pay off his kingdom's debts.

If Teryn can help Cora save a few magical creatures, he can gain her trust, hand her over to her king, and collect the bounty. But Cora has plans of her own, and none of them include being betrayed by her handsome new traveling companion.

The closer Cora and Teryn get to their desires, the harder their tasks become. And it isn't just their budding attraction that's the problem. A secret war is coming, one stemming from ancient feuds and forgotten fae magic. They must work together to stop it, or else both their kingdoms will crumble to ash.

On paper, there's really nothing wrong with this book. Maybe, for me it lacked intrigue. My mind kept wandering off to all kinds of things - like things I need to pick up at the grocery store, what's on TV tonight, where on earth is the last place I stashed my birth certificate?

LOL. You get the point. I can be a very tricky reader, I need to be engaged and hooked pretty early on, I just don't have time to struggle through books anymore.

« Do you? Do you still love me?
His answer came out low and deep. « I’ve never stopped » 😭🔥

This book follows 4 characters ; Cora, Teryn, Larylis & Mareleau on an epic fantasy adventure. (The fact that I loved them ALL SO MUCH. I was longing for each of their POVs!!!)
« Why were women thought to be too soft for matters of war? Did breasts somehow make her unable to consider death and bloodshed? She had to deal with blood every month, which was more than any of the men in that room could say » 🔥
This book started with Cora trying to save the unicorns from mass killing (which was pretty hard to read - my heart was breaking through this part) and then just massively shifts along as the plots unravels. It was epic, dark, amazing and fantastic.
It had me crying, laughing, smiling, giggling and heartbroken! I cannot recommend this enough.
« She was more like a blade, one that was forged to be mighty but still bore chips and scratches »
« She was a force to be reckoned with, a storm wind, an inferno. She was a wind tossed sea and a snow capped mountain. Beautiful like the edge of a blade. »

I’m halfway through and I highly think this’ll be a 5🌟. Already bought the physical copy as a trophy😂

AUTHOR'S NOTE: I am so excited that A Throne of Shadows is now live! For those of you who don't know, this book is a fully rewritten version of the very first book I ever wrote (Shadows of Lela.) And while that original book was the best I could write at the time, I am so thrilled that I've had the chance to give this story the opportunity to really shine. I feel like THIS is the the shape this story was always meant to take. I hope you love it as much as I do.

A Throne of Shadows is book one in the Prophecy of the Forgotten Fae trilogy. Full of elemental/sensory magic, epic adventure, slow burn enemies-to-friends-to-(eventually)-lovers romance, unicorns/fae, betrayal, and banter. If you like books where the guy falls for the girl trying to stab him, this might give you the feels you need.

Thanks so much to all my readers who make this writing journey possible! Here's a peek at the hardcover edition of this book. This is the standard hardcover and includes hidden character art under the dust jacket!

A slow burn, enemies to lovers romantic fantasy anchored by a strong characters that offers a fresh take on familiar elements of fae lore.

A Throne of Shadows is the first book in the Prophecy of the Forgotten Fae trilogy by Tessonja Odette. As an entry into the series this has so much going for it that called to me - sassy unicorns, strong female characters, slow burn romance, it passes the Bechdel Test...I loved it.

I firmly believe that the best romances are multi-POV and in the case of this book it's utilized so well! When I felt like it was time to hear from a specific character, they were often the next POV chapter. They responded to situations in a way that felt organic and authentic to that character.

The four POV characters are all distinct in their voices, beliefs, and the way they see the world. Each feels like a real, flawed, messy human being. They are 18-20 years old and they act like it. Each of these characters live with guilt over choices they've made which inform their worldview and decisions. This helps because some decisions made in the book would be difficult to justify without the benefit of knowing their mindset when they made those choices.

In a lot of fantasy books I’ve read, FMCs are either passive players in their own story or they are unrealistically naïve. This is especially true when it comes to their love interests. It’s something that immediately pulls me out of a story. I need my FMCs to be smart and have agency. Thankfully, Cora is both of those things. When confronting issues she takes the time to think through multiple possibilities and solutions. The anger and trust issues she carries feel justified as the circumstances of her past are revealed. Despite them, she is kind and empathetic making her easy to root for.

Maybe most importantly, Cora can telepathically communicate with a vain and sassy unicorn named Valorre. He is a consistent source of touching moments and comic relief. Unicorns are super underrepresented in fantasy these days. Valorre gets a 10/10 from me.

The extent of the spice in this book is a few moments of sexual tension/banter and a couple kissing scenes. That is not normally enough for me but Tessonja Odette does a lot with a little. Hoping to see this slow burn ignite by book 3…

I am so in love with reading indie authors in this wave of "overhyping copycat books'
because this book is a masterclass in how to take an already-there idea, be inspired by Fae Folklore then come up with your own story, plotline and character arcs.

The Throne of Shadows is an upper YA high fantasy. This means that there are violence, gore, and sexual implications that are not suitable for those under 15.

The world-building is simple but not too simple to consider it juvenile. There are two Lands, and each Land is divided into kingdoms. The story here takes place in the Land of Lela, divided into Khero, Selay and Menah. These Lands were inhabited by magical unicorns and Fae creatures, however, their sighting has been so rare that people started considering them a myth.

There are four POVs, two of the main characters, Cora and Teryn, and two side characters, Princess Mareleau and Larylis (Teryn's half-brother). Although most of the book is from the main characters' POV.

we are introduced to Cora, a witch living with the Forest Folk because she is hiding from being accused of murdering the Queen and Princess. She forges a friendship with a mighty sassy unicorn who is trying to free his brethren and helps him with his task.
Taryn is forced to marry Mareleau because of his kingdom's debt. meanwhile, Mareleau hates this arrangement and tries to come up with a devious plan to get out of this situation by sending her suitors on a hunt for three unicorns.

Cora and Taryn's paths collide and yep! you guessed it! Enemies to friends (not lovers yet) to enemies again. Their encounter is filled with plot twists and dark magic that set their fate even more together

I cannot say more or else I would spoil but I'll leave you with these two clues

there are unicorns and a horrible beast

and there is a somewhat a Jaffar feel

so many things made me love this book

1- the slow build-up to the story. The book started out ok with a normal YA feel but with each event, you start feeling anxious and attached to the characters and what is happening to them. The clever plot construction and scheme keep you interested and forget that this a 502-page book

2- the characters act their age. When you are reading about 18 and 19-year-olds, most YA books especially fantasy ones give you the feeling that they are 30 or 40 by how they talk and act. Not here. they talk like teenagers and act like teenagers. but at the same time, they have the subtle maturity of teenagers thrown into difficult situations.
I just loved Lex's, a side characters, adorable personality

3- The humor in the dialogue here and there
you recall that water nymph statue? Lily puts her to shame."
"in what way?" Teryn tried to keep a straight face. "Her silent dispostion? Her failure to respond to your tough?"

4- The villain is as good or even better written than the heroes with a very strong background story

5- Each of the characters is flawed. And I do not mean physically, I mean in their characters. Cora has trust issues, Teryn is a pushover, and don't even get me started on Mareleau and Larylis' miscommunication trope.

this is the first book in the trilogy
3rd book comes out in December
and you bet I am going to purchase the series

Although it was much too slow for my liking, there are various elements I feel the need to compliment.

A Throne of Shadows follows multiple characters, each with their own interesting story.
➼ Cora: A feisty witch living within a commune of magical folk, struggling to escape her past – and the man who framed her.

➼ Teryn: A prince obligated to compete for the hand of a princess he has no desire to be with. The faith of a kingdom rests upon his shoulders.

➼ Mareleau: A princess determined to prolong her engagement, even if that means sending a couple of princes on a wild goose chase.

➼ Larylis: The illegitimate son of a king, forced to stand on the sidelines of royal matters - even when it involves the woman he loves.
I have to admire the author’s ability to wrap so many stories together to create a seamless plot.

The lore was really fascinating, I'd have loved to have seen even more of it. I especially loved the unicorn that can communicate with Cora through her thoughts! An opinionated animal will always get my vote.

Unfortunately I had to deal with one of my pet peeves, where the villain takes a moment out of his busy world dominating plans to patiently explain his motives. This is probably the only part that felt like an info dump to me.

One plot twist really surprised me which is something that doesn’t happen often. The ending has me stumped as to what will happen next. Where do we go from here? Well, I suppose I'll have to read the sequel to find out.

This was an amazing book; filled with magic, action, and adventure. I am absolutely blown away by the how the magic is described in this story. It’s so detailed and intimate. I could almost feel what Cora was feeling. It made the feats she was able to accomplish all the more exciting for the reader. You were able to put yourself into the experience with Cora. Not only that but the magic itself in this story was absolutely fascinating. How in touch they are with the elements around them. Also the fact that each witch harnesses a talent for one of the senses is very unique in my opinion. I really hope I’m able to see more witches and their talents in the next installments.
The author did an amazing job at writing this story. It felt as though it was a movie. We would jump from one character to the next but it was done in such an amazing way. I was never confused about who we were following in that chapter. I’ve read a few others written like this that had me all over the place. I had no issue with this read. We were able to experience everything that happened in this story and weren’t stuck in only one POV.
I really enjoyed both of our main characters. Each have their own things they need to deal with but at the end of the day they are loyal to the people who are important to them. Cora is so strong mentally and also well skilled physically. I love how she could 100% hold her own but also welcomes the help Teryn is able to provide. Their relationship is growing and I love the fact that it isn’t forced. There is no spice in this read and I am not upset about it. This is a slow burn romance that I’m living for! There is so much happening in this story that I think I would have been disappointed if it was ruined with pointless smut. The read was amazing without it. Now would I be okay with some in the future? Hell yeah!! But it isn’t exactly needed either.
This was such a fun and exciting book to read through. This is my first book by this author and it will definitely not be my last!

This was pretty good. I liked the world-building and the magic system. A few details were never explained, which made it a bit confusing.

I really liked Cora, her struggles felt real. I liked how she wasn’t overly naive.

3,5/5 ⭐️ Cute enemies to lovers. Classic coming of age story.

1/5 🌶 definitely YA.

This book is an outstanding example of how you can take every single romantasy trope and make it work. Potential love triangle. Miscommunication. Enemies to friends, slow burning its way to lovers. Prophecy. Chosen one without the whole "she's not like other girls". Lovers to enemies, possibly swinging back to lovers. Betrothal between kingdoms. The super bad wizard. UNICORNS!

From what I've seen thus far, this book is a rewrite. All I know is this book is fantastic and full of magic.

I only docked the .5 from it for a scenario I didn't find quite believable. Necessary to the story, sure. But it made my brain stutter. LOL

I really loved this world, so many twists and turns.

Heartwarming and romantic (with unicorns).

This book follows more then 1 character with each an incredible story.

There is Cora who is a feisty witch who struggles to escape her past and a man that framed her.

Mareleau a princess that is set on prolonging her engagement, doing whatever is necessary for that.

Larylis the "bastard" son of a king, who is always on the sidelines of the royal business. Even when it is about the one he loves.

Teryn a prince that is forced to compete for the hand of a princess that he has no love for. With the fate of the kingdom resting on his shoulders.

I loved that the author was able to write it so well all together.

The characters are so well-developed throughout the book.

The beginning is a bit confusing with all the names but you get into it pretty fast.

I am very curious for the next book.

Quite honestly I am astonished that this series isn't trad-published because it is so much better than the vast majority of fantasy out there. Tessonja Odette is a gem!

I enjoyed the original version of this book, but the rewrite took it to another level. Now I would recommend it to all of my bookish friends who enjoy Throne of Glass, which is the highest compliment I can give as it's my favorite fantasy series ever.

The writing is beautiful and descriptive, the characters are fully realized, and the romance has more tension now. Valorre is my favorite literary unicorn of all time. And the book isn't afraid to go dark.

I can't wait for the next two books in this trilogy!

This was an exciting and magical read that pulled me in right from the start. The world is beautifully described, and the story moves at the perfect pace, keeping me hooked the whole time. I loved the relationship between Cora and Teryn—it’s full of tension and growth, with just the right amount of romance. The mix of magic, action, and tough choices makes the story so fun to read. The twists and turns kept me guessing, and now I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

3.5 - 4 ⭐

I first became a fan of Tessonja's writing through the author's Entangled with Fae series, and I was very excited to get an opportunity to experience this earlier series, especially with the announcement that it had been rewritten.

As in her other works I've read, I expected to find an awesome female main character, an intriguing and unique magic system, and well-crafted plot lines. A Throne of Shadows did not disappoint me in those regards! The character of Cora is an exceptional morally grey character, and I especially loved the way that she did what needed to be done to protect herself and her loved ones without pages and pages of guilt-ridden internal monologue.

The magic sysyem is very interesting. You've got fae creatures, elven magic, nature based magic, blood magic: There's so much to enjoy. Anytime there's plant or Earth based magic, I'm here for it, but I wanted more. There's a lot of show and tell in first third of the novel, but then we're left in a gap. It isn't until the end that we get any kind of development with Cora's magic, and it felt a long time coming. It would have been nice to see it more spread out in the plot. Loved the sassy unicorn though.

Now here comes the part that knocked my enjoyment down more than I wanted, and it's simply the pacing. A lot of the middle of this dragged for me. I felt like I was reading 800 pages. There's not much that happens, and with so many characters introduced, it gave off middle-book-syndrome vibes without it even being the middle book! Each character has such an interesting back story, and I could tell it was building up to a huge reveal (one that I did end up guessing and thought was kind of obvious), but this is where Tessonja absolutely shines. Her talent for taking the tiniest thread and weaving it into a brilliant tapestry of a plot is top notch. That and her writing was able to pull me through to the last half which picked up quite a bit.

I think some of my problem also stems from the fact that I have only experienced the author's writing in a format that's intended to be a standalone novel, and I very much feel like this almost had that same formula. If it wasn't for the fact that not all questions were answered, I wouldn't have guessed this was a first book in a series. So much was shoved into the plot that I have to wonder if some things would have been better left explained (and resolved for that matter) in the next book of this series.

Even though I didn't end up rating this one as highly as I anticipated, I still have a lot of interest in the series. There's so much she can expand on, and I can't imagine what the author has in store for us in the next installment. Tessonja Odette has become a must read for me at this point, so I'll see you in the next one!

i could not get through this wretched book (and believe me, i tried). it’s written like a watt pad fan fiction (and no hate, i used to enjoy those immensely!) but that was not what i was expecting, so it was jarring to say the least. it starts off fairly interesting with two story lines that i assumed would merge into one… sooner than after 250+ pages in. it was so slow and the characters were generally unlikable, including the talking unicorn. yeah. talking unicorn. the main character could telepathically communicate with this thing and they set out to free all its unicorn brethren that had been locked away in iron cages (surprise surprise, iron is it’s demise). the characters were a bit cliche in nature, which is fine but for some reason i really was not with it here. there were also a lot of plot holes to which i found confusing: the unicorns had “disappeared” but also they hadn’t? they went to a “blank place?” somewhere in the void? hmm — seems fishy to me. maybe they should’ve stayed there, i don’t know, maybe i’m just not one for unicorns.

i am also not the type to give up on books, so i told myself if i didn’t get into it by half way i would be done. i begrudgingly read over half during my spring break and boy, what a waste of time that was. i think this is genuinely one of the most disappointing books i have read as i has high hopes for it. the mix of fantasy and romance is what piqued my interest, however, there was little to no romance and too much of the wrong/cliche type of fantasy.

this book found a home on the donation table of my dorm building. perhaps someone who lived there loved unicorns, and therefore would love the book.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Friend told me for sing-up for ARC and as I loved other Tessonja's books, I thought "Why not". I started reading right away, hopefully to finish it before long trip without time to read. But I found it a little slowly paced first few chapters, so I had to take a week long break. Even if slowly paced, it was so interesting, intriguing , that I thought about it all the time and when I returned, I finished the book in two days.

After finishing it I realised that I do not mind slow pace. It did beautiful work introducing Cora, developing her character, building relationships between Lex and Teryn and then Cora and Teryn. I totally love how Cora is described. She is every girl. She has doubts, she is not sure about her decisions, but still wants to do the best in her life and best for all who loves. And as an archer myself I love that part of her.

I loved second half of the book. Story takes a few (maybe a little expected) turns, everything is constant with characters and their personalities, no weird "why do they do that?" questions. Ending is so satisfying. I want to know more, I need next book. But still I am happy with it, it has some closure.

I know that for the next Tessonja's sign-up for ARC I won't be "Why not" ... I will probably be "Give it to me!".

This was a very pleasant read. I was only disappointed about one thing but ultimately it’s just a preference thing so I really did enjoy this and I hope to read the second book if she writes one! The descriptions were amazing and there wasn’t too much info dumping in my opinion. Definitely recommend for those that enjoy a very very slow burn romance (but that not being the main focus at all) and mystical world building with naturist magic

I started this book without any idea as to what the gist is about as I’ve had this saved in my kindle for almost a year now, the only regret I have is not picking this up sooner.

Reading this was such a breath of fresh air from all the other books I’ve been reading and I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. It made me feel what I felt when I first read once upon a broken heart which I hold in very high regard. Something to keep in mind is this is fantasy heavy and you’ll only get a sprinkle of romance in it so definitely not go into this book thinking it’s going to be a huge mix of both but THERE ARE UNICORNS!!!

I was a bit overwhelmed when there were 4 POV’s but I didn’t mind it when the story picked up and it did end up focusing on Teryn and Cora way more than Larylis and Mareleaus. It makes sense for this to be a series as it ended with a lot of unfinished business for a lot of the characters and I want to see more of Valorre and the Forest people. Also, I’m not convinced that it was as easy as that when it comes to Morkai so this is a series I’m committed to finish. Excited for book 2!!! 💓

A Throne of Shadows
Author: Tessonja Odette

Oh great, another author I now need to attempt to read all of her inventory.😆 I really enjoyed this one. Unicorns, a revenge plot, bunny hunters, magical creatures? Need I say more? A Throne of Shadows by Tessonja Odette is the first book in the Prophecy of the Forgotten Fae trilogy. It follows Cora, a witch that’s been framed for murder, and who is now seeking revenge against the mage responsible. When she discovers a plot to hunt faerie creatures, she forms a plan for vengeance. Prince Teryn, heir to a bankrupt throne, sees an opportunity to save his kingdom by capturing Cora for the bounty on her head. They end up banding together to work towards both of their personal goals. I really enjoyed it and the characters. I’m really curious to see where the story goes next. The magical elements were by far the best part, and the subtle romance keeps you going. Curious if anyone else has read her other series? 🦄

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have to admit, I was not really into reading in the past few months and I’ve been very angry with myself for applying to receive an ARC. Two days ago, I finally decided it was time for me to start reading this book and I was in for a treat!!

I didn’t read the original series so I can’t make any comparisons but I really like the new world I was introduced to. It felt a bit different than many of the other YA fantasy worlds (still, don't expect anything extra), but still simple enough so I didn’t get totally lost in places, people/beings, ways the magic works etc. (Yeah, I am a fast – and oftentimes sloppy – reader, so that does happen a lot to me).

I really enjoyed the characters, the romance that was slowly developing, but most importantly, I like the end!

I was pretty sure it was going to be one of those endings where no problem resolves and the author decides to drag all of them into sequels. So glad I was wrong! However, that doesn’t mean I don’t want to know what will happen next, because you clearly don’t get all the answers.
And there is (hopefully) much more to romance so I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

To be honest I am kind of intrigued to read the original in the meantime.

Thanks to the author for providing an ARC. All opinions are my own.

This is another great book by Tessonja. We’ve got a morally grey FMC, a swoony and conflicted MMC, magic, unicorns, a quest, and enemies to ok not lovers yet, but not enemies anymore. I probably should have expected the reveal, but it still surprised me and I loved it. Cora and Teryn are great MCs and I love their journey. I also really like Larilys. And I LOVED Valorre; he is precious and must be protected at all costs.
I’m really curious and excited to see where the rest of the series goes. I need to know more about the prophecy and what it means! And we definitely need way more kissing in the future because I love the chemistry here!
