Boys of Fall #3

Going Long

Rate this book
This time, he'll need to hit all the right notes to win the woman he's always loved...

Wade Bennett is used to coming in second to his seemingly perfect older brother. In high school, Colt was a star linebacker while Wade was the punter, an important job without all of the glory. When Charlene Martinez—the only girl Wade ever truly wanted—fell for Colt, Wade decided to take his chances with music and went on the road. Leaving behind his family, his best friend, Rafe, and Charlene, who had feelings for Wade she never allowed herself to feel.

Years in Nashville quickly hardened the dreamy guy who just wanted to sing and hang out with his dog, Melody. His success has given him more than enough money, even if he knows he’ll never be able to compete with his hometown hero big brother. But after Coach Carr's heart attack, Wade comes home to help the man who helped him make the decision to chase his dreams all those years ago.

Now Wade wants to chase a new dream in his old hometown, especially since Charlene is single again after divorcing Colt. And Wade is no longer a boy unwilling to fight for what—and who—he needs.

USA Today bestselling author Cari Quinn grew up wanting to be a singer more than anything else. When she realized she probably wouldn’t be hired as the opening act for the Foo Fighters, she stopped singing and started writing. This was either his worst idea or his best mistake. There was no way it could be anything but a disaster on some level.

I love Cari Quinn's books. Whenever I'm in the mood for a romance that has a great story and manages to pack in the feels right along smoking hot sex, she's my go to. The woman does angsty and does it well. But her straight contemporary are just as great. I haven't read a book by her I haven't loved yet, and this was no exception. I was intrigued the second I read the blurb. Childhood friends, unrequited romance, wanting your brother's ex wife; consider me sold.
She'd told herself she'd never take a chance again, and she'd kept that promise. Only Wade made her want to break the rules. To test the boundaries.

The last place that Wade Bennett wants to come back to is the small town that he grew up in. Now a successful country star, he wasn't always the star of the show. Growing up in the shadow of his older brother, he's used to coming in second both on the football field and in love. When his brother started dating the girl that he fell in love with when he was just a small boy, he knew that he needed to leave. The fact that his brother later married her ensured that he also stayed away. But a call from his childhood best friend letting him know that their beloved high school football coach had a heart attack and needs them, he knows that he's going to come back to help. He's no longer the boy living in is brother's shadow, and his childhood love is no longer married to his brother. If ever there was a time to make his move, this is it.

Charlene Martinez may have married the older Bennett brother, but unbeknownst to them both she's always been in love with Wade. Unfortunately Wade had always placed her firmly in the friend zone. Any hope that she may have had after one stolen kiss back in high school, shattered the very next day when Wade moved away. But now Wade is back, and no matter how hard she tries to resist, if the boy was tempting to her, the man is downright irresistible.

In a small town where everyone knows each others business, can these two keep the heat between them under wraps? Can they finally make things between them work? Guess you'll have to read to find out.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved that Charlene actually had an amicable divorce and was so friendly with her ex husband. That doesn't mean she doesn't feel guilty about being with Wade, but Cari handled this plot line very well. Charlene and Wade definitely burned up the pages together. This author knows how to write one steamy as hell scene. I love books with the small town element, so of course this one really fit the bill for me. Between all the secondary characters and the story I never once found myself bored. I also loved how she managed to work in a guest appearance by Gray and Jaz from Twisted. That was a huge highlight of the book for me.

As much as I enjoyed it, it was also just missing a certain something to bring it up to a solid 4 stars for me. I can't really place my finger on exactly what it was, but there was just a missing oomph. I loved the story and the characters, but at the same time I had no problems setting the book down. I wasn't ever bored, but it just failed to grip me as much as Cari's other books have. Nonetheless it was still a fantastic read and one I'd recommend to any lovers of contemporary romance. A perfect afternoon read with just the right amount of steam and story.

It was short and sweet and you definitely need to pay attention to the book’s warning at the very beginning. Yes it is funny that the author advises to “keep a glass of cold ice water handy to avoid sudden heatstroke.” But it was certainly helpful to have it during the scorching hot sexy time Wade and Charlie did not waste on their second chance at love.

Having lived under his brother’s shadow, Wade Bennett left the girl of his dreams in the trusty arms of Colt Bennett and traded his football gear for a chance to make it big as a singer in Nashville as soon as it was humanly possible.
“One more day with you is the wish I’d make. If I had any wishes left to give. Until then my chances I’ll take. With this life I have left to live.”

Wanting to be more than best friends with Wade but feeling that he would only look at her as his buddy, Charlene Martinez marries Wade’s older brother Colt, but soon realizes that there’s only friendship between the older Bennett and amicably get divorced.

Now a successful country music star, Wade has avoided his home town and family because of the heartache of not being able to get the girl and always coming second best. But life’s twists and turns compel Wade to help out his coach and mentor who’s had a heart attack. Now that he’s back, will he fight for what he’s always wanted?

I understood and felt for the sexy cowboy – football player who never felt quite good enough in his home town and was even warned off by the object of his affection’s mother. I couldn’t help but swoon over the country singer that crooned about poignancy of lost love.
“On a summer night, I found you there. All alone with his hands in your hair. And I believed once that dreams came true. Until the day I lost you.”

I was equally won over by Charlene who works hard, doesn’t hesitate to help others and isn’t ashamed to go after what she wants.

I really liked that Wade and Charlene didn’t dwell on the past or squander their time. They knew what they wanted and went for it. Their relationship went from flirty and suggestive banter
“You start talking about britches, sweetheart, and you’ll make a man think you’re looking to lose yours.”

To flat out reach for my glass of water combustible and provocative.
“What kind of pictures are you talking about?”
“Naked ones. Just you and your guitar.”
She licked his throat. “Maybe one with your hat hiding the private parts.”

After reading the blurb, I thought I might feel strange about the complicated relationship between the two brothers and Charlene. But it surprisingly well developed and not an issue for me. What did irk me was that these two mature adults that have wanted each other since their teens were settling for a couple of happy, blazing hot weeks together and not actively looking for their ever after. I felt it went against the grain.

Eventually though they do realize that a few days of forever is not enough.
“Charlene gave him everything he hadn’t realized he needed—friendship and laughter, emotion and seduction. She was his past and his present, and damn if he didn’t wish she could be his future as well.”

On a complete side note, I loooved the cameo by Gray Duffy and Jazz the pink pixie from the Lost in Oblivion series. A collaboration awesome between Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliott. Seduced, the prequel for this series is FREE on amazon http://amzn.to/1F2jveo and you can visit our blog or check out my GR list for the reviews of that series.

Going Long is part of the Boys of Fall series that can be read as a standalone. It’s written in third person with both points of view. I recommend it for readers that like incendiary second chance romances with a happy ending.

I don't know about this. The description looked good. Charlene is the heroine. Wade is the hero. They grew up together - went to school together. They were best friends, basically. Each had more than friend feelings for the other, but neither did anything about it. Wade's older brother, Colt, expressed an interest in Charlene and they started going out. Wade couldn't stand to watch it and left for Nashville to pursue a music career.

It's something like 12 years later and Wade gets a call from an old high school classmate indicating the coach of their high school football team has had a heart attack and the old team is converging back in town to help the coach out on his ranch. Wade also decides to return. So, in those 12 years, Charlene has married Colt. And Charlene and Colt have divorced. Wade has pretty much stayed away all of that time.

Charlene intends to avoid him, but Colt doesn't understand why his relationship with Wade is damaged and asks Charlene to try to mediate. She agrees. Wade and Charlene hook up, temporarily, almost as soon as he's back in town. Misunderstandings and hurt feelings ensue.

I found the premise with the football coach a big stretch. It was stated that he had ranch hands and he told Wade he didn't need any money, so I don't really get how he needed so much help that the entire football team from Wade's class had to return. Coach seemed like he was there just to offer sage advice.

I wasn't big on the public sex, either. Wade and Charlene agree their relationship is temporary and they aren't trying to hide anything from anyone, but they engage in practically public sex several times. And people noticed. It's a small town, after all. Oh, and Wade is in to dominance - spanking, ropes, etc. It's implied that several other of the old high school football players have some odd sexual habits, too. So, it's a small town, but they're all a little bit freaky. I've lived in a small town. No one misses anything - it's all public consumption. So, I just felt a bit uncomfortable and disbelieving about some of these scenarios.

Quick summary
Wade Bennett is a famous country singer who's struggling with his career identity. Feeling as if he's lost his way, he uses the opportunity of a return home to gain focus. He hasn't been home much since he graduated high school 12 years before, when his brother got the girl of his dreams, Charlene Martinez. She's now divorced from his brother, Colt, and looking forward to seeing the one that really got away.

One more thing...
Wade's purpose in coming home is to help out his former, beloved football coach who's just had a heart attack. He and his old teammates are reuniting to help run the coach's ranch while he recuperates.

Elephant in the room
Okay, getting involved with your sibling's ex has sort of an "ew" factor but I trust this writer and decided to go for it anyway. I'm glad I did because there's more to this situation than just the vital facts. I was still mildly uncomfortable but it worked.

In summary
I liked Wade and I liked Charlene. I'm not sure I got enough to understand what drew them together 12 years ago so when things got hot and heavy really fast, I struggled to catch up. What really worked for me, though, was the strong themes of the small, western town setting. Wade might be wealthy but everyone else works hard to make a living and it's reflected in their lifestyles and points of view. It adds a level of richness to the story that had me really get who Wade and Charlene are and what really mattered to them.

The bottom line
I enjoyed the story despite my initial apprehension about the Wade/Charlene/Colt dynamic. I also loved the musical angle, especially when Wade's return to his roots grounds him and shines a guiding light to a new path for his career. One of the best moments? When Gray and Jazz Duffy from the Lost in Oblivion series make an appearance!! And it was a perfect connection. Loved it! 3.5 stars.

What I wouldn't give to have a man like Wade Bennett sing me sweet nothings while wearing...sweet baby Jesus, NOTHING. This is the fourth Boys of Fall book I've read, and the fourth former high school footballer I've fallen for. I'm shocked. (<<-- Sarcasm.)

Wade Bennett sure didn't hang around Quinn, Texas for long after his older brother, Colt—the brother he always seemingly came in second to—snagged the one girl he'd ever truly cared about, Charlene Martinez.

Launching a successful country music career has kept Wade away from his hometown for more than a decade, but when a call comes from a former teammate letting him know he's needed home, Wade finds himself back in Quinn. And still infatuated with Charlene—his brother’s now ex-wife.

This time around, Wade’s not going to take it lying down, or come in second place. This time, he's going to fight for his girl.

Oh man, Wade… All of the Quinn men have impressed me—whether I've read their story yet or not—and Wade and Colt were no different. But this story isn't what you're expecting. It's not a bitter, angsty love triangle. No, it's a sweet, sexy-as-fuck love story, with a small side of I-can't-read-this-but-I-can't-put-it-down, and a healthy dose of swoon and giggles.

Wade and Charlene were all adorable banter and down and dirty sex, and damn, that's a hell of a combination. I loved their chemistry, I loved their history, and I loved that they didn't play at big secrets. They didn't try to hide their passion from each other, and sure, their love had a use-by date because of Wade’s career and Charli’s small town life, but you could just tell they were meant to be. I love that there was no question for me about how perfect they were—it just felt right from start to finish.

I was, admittedly, a little apprehensive about Going Long, but truly had no reason to be. Instead, I was more than pleasantly surprised by the humor and the feels (thanks, in large part, to the catalyst for this stellar series, Coach Carr), and left desperate for more on Colt, and the rest of the Boys of Fall. ~ Beth, 5 stars

Award winning, country music superstar, Wade Bennett is in a bit of a slump. Music sales are waning, and he’s got more than enough money to live off of for years. He used to be the guy that wanted to hang out with friends and sing all day long, but twelve years in Nashville have hardened him.

Wade ran from Quinn, Texas when he realized the only girl he ever wanted fell for his older brother, Colt. Wade always came in second to Colt, who always got what he wanted—so Wade left behind his family, his best friend, Rafe and his first love, Charlene Martinez. Called back to Quinn to help out when his beloved high school football coach has a heart attack, Wade is unsure what welcome he’ll receive when he returns.

Now that Charli and Colt have been divorced for years, it’s Wade’s chance to find his true happiness. It’s time to chase a new dream, one that eluded him years ago, but Wade’s not afraid to go after what he wants anymore. And he desperately wants Charli.

I freaking love this series. Wade, while extremely successful in the music world, can’t help but revert to the “second thought” younger brother role when he returns to Quinn. BUT, this time around he’s finally going after the woman he’s always wanted—Charli. And he doesn’t let anyone or anything stop him.

And Charli—what a bit of a mess she is. She’s kept a close friendship with Colt—actually, their whole relationship was more of a deep friendship versus a true romance, but that knowledge doesn’t help Charli get over the “what are people going to say” mindset. The funny thing about this book is I found myself wanting to both hug and punch just about everyone but Coach. I love how Coach is the voice of reason for these boys. Coach, I always wanted to hug. ~ Missy, 5 stars

3.5-4 stars

This was a pretty good story. I liked Wade and Charli and their story was what I expected but still interesting and enjoyable.

Charli is partial owner of a business and also helps her mother out and teaches yoga. She used to be married to Colt but never really loved him as more than a friend and only married him because of a pregnancy that didn't last. Charli was BFFs with Colt's brother, Wade, growing up and she loved him but he always kept her in the friends category. The only time that slipped what a kiss he gave her right before he left town to pursue his music career.

Wade is a famous country musician living in Nashville. Wade always felt like he came in second best to his brother (Colt) and it usually didn't bother him until Colt set his sights on Charli. Unfortunately, Wade was so used to Colt getting everything he didn't fight for the woman he loved and eventually left town to follow his music career. He avoided coming back as much as he could because it was tough for him to see Colt and Charli (seemingly) happily married.

Wade was close to his high school football coach, always feeling like he was a second father to him. Wade's in Nashville and gets a call from an old friend letting him know that the coach had a heart attack and asking him to come home to help out and show coach some support. Wade agrees and pushes back his record obligations in order to take a trip back home. Colt and Charli got divorced 3 years before and Wade isn't sure how to deal with things. He doesn't intend to start something with Charli but can't help going to see her pretty quickly after arriving in town. Charli is very happy to see Wade and when he makes a comment that's a bit suggestive, Charli is very quick to pick up on that and encourage more. Unfortunately, Wade ends up saying the wrong thing and pisses Charli off, sending them in on their separate ways (which both of them are unhappy about).

It doesn't take long before Charli and Wade see each other again. Wade manages to get his foot out of his mouth long enough for them to talk and they both admit they want each other but since he's only in town for 2 weeks they can't have anything long term. They agree to try to squeeze as much time together in the 2 weeks and deal with the split later. That's a little easier said than done though since Wade's leaving does linger as a constant shadow over their temporary relationship. Things aren't always steady since they both have a bit of a temper and a few times they fight about stupid things but they make the most of their time together. Things are complicated by Wade feeling like he's still in Colt's shadow and Charli not being willing to be treated again like Colt treated her and also being unsure about her place with Wade. This causes some angst but it really wasn't too bad overall. There is some tenseness at the end but I was happy about how they turned out, with Charli and Wade starting a HEA together.

This was a pretty enjoyable story. Charli and Wade were good characters...I got slightly frustrated with their tempers/personal issues causing them trouble in working their relationship out but it really wasn't that bad. The story was what I expected but it was well written enough that it stayed interesting and kept me engaged through to the end. Overall, this was a pretty good story with likable characters. I'd recommend this story. :D

Slick's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

One of the things I’ve always admired about author Cari Quinn is that she isn’t afraid to tackle hard or uncomfortable subjects and in Going Deep she takes on one man confused about his sexuality, another man in love with that man and a woman with body issues enjoying them both at the same time. Three people all carrying some baggage find happiness in each other’s arms even if they think it’s only temporary. You do not want to miss this complicated, sexy and highly satisfying story.

Watching your ex-wife marry your little brother and knowing that you cost them years together doesn’t make for the best time at a wedding, but Colt Bennett is determined to not only see the night through but to also make sure the happy couple realizes he is truly happy for them. When Colt and the object of his desire, Paige Wilcox need a ride home from the wedding Colt’s best friend and business partner, Drake Mondell which leads to a night they all enjoy immensely, but not without some big time complications.

First off I really liked these three together and while they all went into it thinking “just one night” they realized pretty quickly that wasn’t going to be enough. Paige really surprised me with how easily she acquiesced to their arrangement and took it mostly in stride; she really didn’t over think it nor did she worry too much about what others thought other than her best friend Charli since she was getting involved with her ex-husband. Drake was probably the most level headed about their association but he was in love with Colt and fell quickly for Paige and in his mind even if Colt wouldn’t accept what they had together he felt he would be very happy making a go of it alone with Paige. While it bothered him that Colt refused to even talk about his attraction towards him or discuss anything more than what they did with Paige there was no denying that Colt enjoyed it when Drake touched him. Poor Colt was dealing with so much guilt; he worried about being with his ex-wife’s best friend, he didn’t want to admit he felt anything more than friendship with Drake and he worried that everyone in town would say about him if he was involved in a triad relationship long term. It was interesting watching them all work through their issues all while finding it very difficult to not be together. This was an extremely sexual story and there was absolutely nothing wrong that, but there was a definite lack of communication especially from Colt. I kept waiting for the three of them to have a really big talk about their future and what they wanted together, but it never really happened which was a bit of a disappointment.

With the wedding and the town’s homecoming as a backdrop not to mention some other interesting romantic entanglements going on as well, Going Deep was a very entertaining and sexy story and another incredible offering from this author.

This steamy contemporary romance is the story of Wade and Charlene. When Wade thought the girl he was halfway to falling in love with was interested in his older brother Colt and not him, he took his chances and went to seek his fame and fortune in Nashville, leaving Charlene and his family behind. But a call from an old friend brings him back to town and face to face with Charlene again - now amicably divorced from his brother and willing to give Wade a second chance at proving once and for all that he's the one for her.

I enjoyed this romance. While Wade and Charlene are the focus, there is a great introduction to several other characters that will be featured in the Boys of Fall series and a real sense of home and community is presented. From the first moment they set eyes on each other again, it's obvious that the years apart haven't dulled the sexual chemistry between them and now that they are adults they are more than willing to indulge, resulting in some steamy lovemaking. The situation is a bit complicated, with Charlene having married and divorced Wade's brother Colt and now finally having the chance to be with the one she really wanted all along and I would have liked the necessary conversations between the trio to have happened earlier in the story to clear the air instead of hanging over Wade and Charlene as they start getting busy (so to speak). Conflicts with the parents were hinted at but never really worked into the story, just another part of the drama for Wade and Charlene to overcome. Overall it was an entertaining and sexy read and I'm looking forward to reading more of the stories of the secondary characters that were introduced. 4 stars.

Wade Bennett shook the dust of Quinn, Tx off his boots and made every excuse not to return. The one thing he couldn't say 'no' to was Coach Carr. Even if that meant returning to the town where his brother, Colt, had gotten his girl. Sure they were long since divorced now but his heart still ached. Charlene Martinez was his best friend and she didn't have a clue how he felt until the day he kissed her, not very chastely I might add, on his way out of town. Charlene still pined for the man who was now a country music star and had always wondered what if. Their reunion was hotter than a Texas scorcher. These homecoming stories have always appealed to me. This one is well written. We all leave a bit of ourselves in our hometowns. I love to read about those who find happiness in the end. A hot cowboy/football player/music crooner never hurts either. This was my first story by this author and I will definitely see what else she has out there.

I was given the ARC for this story. In return, here is my honest review. A nice story with well built characters. I love that. To feel I'm there too. I don't like that safe words weren't discussed. Also being a Dom and being dominant are totally different and I felt confused as to what Ms Quinn was trying to do with Wade when it came to that point in the story.

Four and a half stars.

Going Long by Cari Quinn is a part of the Boys of Fall series written with Mari Carr and Erin Nicholas. This story, about Wade Bennett and Charlene Martinez, is second chance story at heart. Wade's a Nashville star of sorts, but he doesn't see his own worth or accomplishments. When he looks in the mirror, he sees the guy who's second-best to his older brother. Colt was the star linebacker, the NFL star, the one who got the girl. Even though Colt and Charlene have now been divorced for years, he's having a hard time not seeing her as Colt's ex.

Charlene has had feelings for Wade for years--as a friend, and then as more. But he's never given her a hint of encouragement, and she's an adult. She knows he's got a life outside of Quinn and he's off doing his thing.

Cari Quinn does a lovely job with this story--Wade and Charli share some serious chemistry, but they also share their hearts and dreams. Ms Quinn does a terrific job with their not-so-smooth path to an HEA.

Can't wait to head back to Quinn for more of their teammates' stories!

First paragraph: The road stretched ahead of Wade Bennett, winding up into the mountains of Truxton, Tennessee. Endless miles of land surrounded him, offset by the bucolic farms tucked into the forest. Trees rose up around him like sheltering angels that dripped shade onto the sunbaked earth, offering snatches of respite from the sweltering heat.

3 1/2 stars rounded up to four, because that's how rounding works.

"Going Long" is a contemporary romance about second chances, sibling rivalry, high school football, and country music. I'm a fan of Quinn's works, so I was already bought in when I opened my ebook. And this one didn't disappoint - Quinn can write steamy sex scenes without any awkwardness, with endearing characters that emotionally connect. In this, Wade is the younger brother who off for the Nashville music lights and left his best friend and secret love, Charlene, to his older brother Colt, who'd eventually become an NFL star. Although Wade and Charlene loved each other while in high school, they never did anything about it except for one brief goodbye kiss before Wade left for 12 years.

The story starts with Wade returning home to Small Town, Texas, when he learns his high school football coach is ill. He and Charli quickly began a passionate, two-week affair that quickly reveals to them the mistakes they'd made in the past.

What I enjoyed most about this book were the relationships between the characters - parents, friends, bandmates. Passionate, loyal, strained, hurtful - however you describe these relationships, they appeared genuine. I'm not so sure that I liked the part where Wade starts singing to Charli while doing it doggy style. Not sure I would have been able to keep a straight face there. Too distracting.

Overall, I enjoyed this book will continue to read books by this author. She does a great job in contemporary romance.

By the way, I was offered a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Which, in fact, in no way altered my opinion of the book. Nice job.

A smoking hot country singer who grow up in a small town and was a cowboy/football player. SIGN ME UP!
Wade instantly turned me on and his smooth county crooner attitude kept me going. Charlene and Wade have been friends since her family moved to Quinn and she's been harboring feelings for Wade just as long. However Wade always knew that he wanted to be a country star and he didn't feel as if that life what what was best for Charlene. So Charlene settled for Colt. Wades brother. They have been divorced for 5 years and Wade has just returned after hearing about his former coaches heart attack.

I really wanted to enjoy this completely but there were parts that just irked me and they are personal reasons. I am not a fan of women settling for second best and I feel that's what Charlene did when she had a fling with Colt because she couldn't have Wade. No women should ever settle for less than what she desires and deserves.
the other part that threw me off a bit was the scene where the song writer was coming from California. Two characters were introduced and you learn quite a bit about them in a short time and then they are gone within a few pages. I would have loved to see them in the story a little longer, but I am excited to find out there are from another series by Cari that I'm going to have to pick up, but It felt disjointed and it took me away from the main focus which should have been those in Quinn.

All in all I really did enjoy this addition to The Boys of Fall Series that includes Out Of Bounds by Erin Nicholas and Free Agent by Mari Carr.
* These books don't have to be read in any particular order either which is a fun and unique spin on a series!

Where to start...

Ok overall I liked the idea of the small town in Texas and its characters. The country music star thing was great and refreshing. He comes home to pick up with a girl he hasn't seen or spoken to in years and spends two with with her, they brake up and then he proposed? It's like wow that was fast. I wish the 2 weeks were drawn out a bit more. It had its funny moments with the witty comments that went back and forth. All the characters are likable in their own way which made it special. Would i recommend this book ? Yes if you enjoy unfinished business that finally gets resolved not only with the two main characters but with a few others. The sex scenes were steamy. Cari takes you through a journey through emotions that Is for sure.

I wasn't sure what I was going to think about this book. I read the description and I was a little bit unsure of about the falling for my brother's ex-wife storyline, but I shouldn't have doubted Cari Quinn.

She made me love Wade and Charlene together and anyone be darned about the fact that Charlene had been married to Wade's bother. It was just a side thought. You couldn't deny the chemistry between Wade and Charli and that's all there was to it.

I loved getting to the intro to the other boys of fall as well. I am interested in getting into their individual stories.

I just wish that knowing that this was the intro book, it was just a little longer so that we could get more of our main couple. But hopefully we'll see more of them future books.

Good. Wade was cool, but I didn't fall in love with either character really. I was actually taken with his brother and her friend! I will for sure read the rest of the series. I really liked the style and the easy reading!

Good and steamy little story, hard not to like that! It was a friends to lovers combined with second chance romance. The precis really sets the story up well so nobody needs a recap here. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the team's stories too!

I got this book in a anthology a long time ago and I finally got around to reading it. I chose to voluntarily review it. A good story. Well written. A little short on the D/s scenes so I recommend this book to those who like a little BDSM in their books. Give this one a chance I really think it's a good book. This one is worth your time. A small town story!!!!!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 19, 2015

This time, he'll need to hit all the right notes to win the woman he's always loved...

Wade Bennett is used to coming in second to his seemingly perfect older brother. In high school, Colt was a star linebacker while Wade was the punter, an important job without all of the glory. When Charlene Martinez—the only girl Wade ever truly wanted—fell for Colt, Wade decided to take his chances with music and went on the road. Leaving behind his family, his best friend, Rafe, and Charlene, who had feelings for Wade she never allowed herself to feel.

Years in Nashville quickly hardened the dreamy guy who just wanted to sing and hang out with his dog.

~~~
REVIEW: GOING LONG is an adult, contemporary romance storyline by Cari Quinn. The Boys of Fall is a three book series (released concurrently) written by Cari Quinn, Erin Nicholas and Mari Carr focusing on three former high school football stars from Quinn, Texas who are called home when their former coach suffers a stroke. This is country music star Wade Bennett and Charlene Martinez’s storyline-a friends to lover/ second chance storyline for two people who have never stopped loving one another.
The focus of the story is the rekindling of a relationship between Charlene and Wade. Years earlier Wade had fallen in love with his best friend Charlene but stepped aside when his older brother Colt-the hometown star linebacker-made a play for the girl that he loved. Wade, with his heart set on a music career, headed to Nashville where his star was on the rise. But things were about to change and Wade needed to take a breather. A call from a former friend found Wade back home and making a play for the woman he has always loved. The problem-Charlene is now his brother’s ex-wife.
The prior relationship between Wade and Charlene has already been established but quickly jumps into lovers when Wade and Charlene admit their attraction and long fought love for one another. The $ex scenes are intimate, passionate, and a little bit dirty. Nowhere is off limits for our couple that find themselves in a few compromising situations around town.
The secondary characters include several of the former high school football players including Jackson Brady (Out of Bounds by Erin Nicholas) and Tucker Riley (Free Agent by Mari Carr). All three storylines run parallel and simultaneously with one another but each one can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. We are introduced to Wade’s brother Colt and their sister Hollie as well as Charlene’s brother Rafe and mama Rose-each has a different opinion about our couple’s future happiness.
There is also a slight cross over with Cari’s LOST IN OBLIVION series with the inclusion of Gray Duffy and Jazz Edwards (Twisted LIO #2). Gray and Jazz are members of the rock group Oblivion and have been partnered with Wade in an attempt to change Wade’s style of music. I am not sure if Cari will include any of Wade and Charlene’s future storyline with her Lost in Oblivion series, but it was great to see Jazz and Gray looking towards their future.
GOING LONG is a fast paced, fun, and romantic storyline with a little bit of heartbreak, romance and letting go. Cari Quinn’s hometown spin on former football stars is a reminder that one’s future does not always go as planned; there is always history; an unknown secret; and a love that has never burned out. And of course, living on past glory, gives small town storylines a case of hero worship for something that once was.
Going long / Free Agent and Out of bounds
The concept of various authors writing a different book with a common theme is new to me and I have to say that I am quite enjoying the continuity. Having read Going Long, Free Agent and Out of Bounds I can enthusiastically say Well Done!! I love that some scenes are the same in each book yet told from a different perspective.
I fell for Wade from Going Long, plain and simple, his focus, determination and love (and his dog! ) please how could you not! Add in his dedication to his coach and willingness to drop everything to help, he is a catch!
Charlene is a more complex character and her development seemed to take a bit longer. Or maybe I was just jealous. In all three books I enjoyed the fact that the female characters were strong, women with careers, family and life that did not stop just because the past and the boys were back in town.
I found Charlene to be a very strong character and was able to go to toe with Wade. Their chemistry is of off the charts and if it was like this high school then I am at a loss as to why they could not see it. The fact that that they were and are such good friends was very heartwarming. I have to day I enjoyed his POV more than hers.
In Free agent, Tucker and Lela where high school sweethearts, when Tucker comes home to help out Coach they reconnect and sparks fly. A good story and well written but it did not capture my attention as much as the others.
Out of Bounds, by Erin Nicholas was my favorite! This is the story of Jackson and Annabelle, who knew each other in high school and how one moment can change a person’s path in life. In this case Jackson chose to make a difference in lives of young boys, an honorable path to take and closely relates to how Coach also took care of the boys on his teams and tried to show them the right way and continues to help them with their choices to this day.
Annabelle was a great character and I loved her inner dialogue in the coffee shop! So funny. And as mentioned in the other reviews I enjoyed the scenes that are told in every book but in a different perspective, In Free agent Annabelle is on the phone with Lela and the phrase eye on the prize in regards to Carter is mentioned and now in this book the reader understands Annabelle’s crush on Carter. So again there is continuity.
(I can’t wait for Carter‘s book as I am intrigued!)
The author has a way with showing us new and shall we say inventive ways to have sex! I must keep a running list. And as with all her books the sense of community and family prevails. Whether it be in Omaha, Sapphire falls or Quinn you always feel welcome.
Going Long Cari Quinn
Genre: Romance
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Cari and two other authors have written The Boys of Fall series. I’ve read and enjoyed many of Cari’s novels, but not read the other two books in this series but that doesn’t matter as each are standalone though connected via places and characters.
Wade and Charli are the main characters here. Best friends at school, each wanted the other but was too afraid of spoiling what they had. Then Charli marries his brother, Colt, and Wade took off. Now he’s a musical success and she’s divorced. Coach Carr, his boyhood hero and mentor, is ill and Wade has an excuse to come home after all those years. He decides he wants to see if Charli still has feelings for him. The answer is yes, Coach tells him to go for it, life is too short to have regrets, but Charli still wants steadiness, and Wade’s music means she thinks he’ll be away too much, so all they can have is a short term fling. Wade needs to persuade her they can have more.
Wade – he’s a lovely, sexy man. He’s grown up and isn’t afraid to fight for what he wants, and yet in some ways he’s still that boy who always feels under the shadow of his perfect older brother. It means he reads between the lines too much and gets it wrong! That's what happened when he left, when he didn’t make it clear to Charli how he felt, and circumstances meant she ended up with his brother, and it looks set to repeat itself unless someone steps in. He’s sex on legs, gets Charli in some very hot and erotic situations ( Coach Carr’s kitchen, the drive in movie, the car etc! Really Wade!!) and yet he still can’t really believe she wants him it seems to me.
Charli, she’s a real homebody in that she loves the town and the people, and wants to make her home there always, and has too many ties to just pull up and follow Wade. She’s scared too that if she does that, what happens to her if he changes his mind. Her mum always said security is very important, and that seems to be her mantra. She seems to see them as two people who are going in opposite directions, but she’s along with Wade for the quick and hot sexy relationship they have, however brief it is.
Its a lovely story, and it was great to see Gray and Jazz from Cari’s other books here in cameo roles. Its not a heart stopping, drama filled romance, and a less out and out edge of seat read than the rock star ones IMO, more a traditional type and a fun, sensual and solid romance to enjoy.
Stars: Four, sexy HEA romance.
I was given an ARC to review by the author. I have not read tons of books by this author but what I have read I have enjoyed. I have not read her Oblivion series but after reading this story I am very tempted because it features some Oblivion characters Gray and Jazzy and they seemed so fun.
Now about this book. To be honest its not my usual read, it features Wade and Charlene who are former BFF's and also brother and sister in laws. I don't tend to like love triangles and especially ones with siblings. But in the case here it really worked and I think thats largely because Colt (the brother and husband) and Charlene married because she got pregnant and miscarried, they were never in love. For most of the book he is even out of town. Charlene stayed married to him because she never wanted to hurt him and he was a bit of a player and couldn't wait to get divorced.So there really aren't you typical divorced couple.
Wade, the hero was in love with Charlene and she with him but he never feels he is good enough and so they never tell each other. On his way out of town they kiss and before she has a chance to talk to him he is gone.
Charlene dated his brother in High School but she never had sex with him and they even were not together for 3 years before they have sex and so Wade had lots of opportunities to tell Charlene he loved her but instead he is a country singer and distances himself from his family and her. He only comes home to help his coach after a heart attack and just for two weeks.
So as a love triangle there isn't really one. Its more about the scandal of them being together. I liked Charlene and I liked Wade and to be honest I liked every character in the town and the story. This book has no evil or mean characters which I really liked. Wade has a self image problem, and so never goes after what he wants until his coach finally tells him go for it.
Charlene is a wonderful character and I could see why Wade loves her. She just wants to live her life and she is so very alive and she just grabs life and lives it. She owns her mistakes and she is strong and resilient and I think she really made this story.
I really can't wait to read more stories from this author.
This was a really refreshing read that’s got me in the mood for some warmer weather and a bit of romance. It was a fun and easy read that has pulled my mood out of the winter blues and into the wishful thinking for spring/ summer. It’s a book full of all the things a girl dreams of, themed on a romanced based on the one that got away which is always entertaining.
The main characters are Wade and Charlene, two people who always had a crush on each other but never got round to doing anything about it. It’s years down the line when the story begins, Wade is returning home after his football coach has suffered a heart attack; he is now a successful singer. While Charlene has never moved however she has married and divorced Wade’s brother; the one Wade was always jealous of. The two felt an undeniable attraction to each other and end up quickly making up for lost time giving the readers a few steamy scenarios. I loved both of the main characters who had their own unique quirkiness and fitted together nicely.
The secondary characters include Coach and Colt since these are the only two characters who influence the relationship between the two main characters which is the subject of the story. Coach is a huge encouragement to the relationship between Wade and Charlene, he recognises the love between the two characters and tries to push them towards each other. Colt is Wade’s brother and Charlene’s ex husband, he always thought there was an untold affection between the two characters, but I think ultimately just wants to bridge the gap in his relationship with his brother Wade so supports him in everything.
The pacing was good leaving it up to the last minute to find out if the two characters get together, the epilogue was also well placed telling us the outcome of the story.
The storyline was perfect for a book of this size, it was a quick, fun read with great characters. I would love to read more in this series and more by this author.
4 stars a great read
I Loved Wade and Charli! Wade and Charli were best of friends in high school but while they both had feeling for the other they never said anything so when Colt, Wade's older brother, asks Charli out she says yes. Maybe it's just me but you NEVER EVER go out with one brother when you are hung up on the other. Anyway, Wade hightails it out of town once he has his GED and moves to Nashville where he becomes a famous County Music Star and Charli stays and later on marries Colt. Fast forward 12 years, Wade's old football coach has some medical problems and the old team comes back to help out. Colt & Charli are now divorced and Wade is tired of playing second fiddle to his brother all of his life so he is determined to go after what he has always wanted. YES! FINALLY!
Friends to lovers and second chance at love that is what these two have. Does it get any better then that...nope!
I also loved that Gray and Jazz from Twisted made an appearance in this book. This looks to be a great series with different authors making it up. The next book in the series is Out of Bounds by Erin Nicholas followed by Free Agent by Mari Carr. I will defiantly be reading both of those books.
Do you believe in second chances at love or maybe going after the the one that got away? Well this is the book for you. This is a fantastic read that shows that sometimes you can find happiness a second time around.
Wade Bennett loved Charlene Martinez but stepped aside when his big brother Colt showed interest in her. He ultimately escaped his hometown to Nashville and became a big star and Charlene married Colt.
But Wade is back to help with his favourite football coach who is sick and things are different. Very different. Charlene is now divorced and Wade sees nothing standing in his way to finally getting his girl.
"You start talking about britches, sweetheart, and you’ll make a man think you’re looking to lose yours.”
Charlene knew she married the wrong brother but now there's the chance to see if her feelings are true or not. Even if Wade is only in town for a short time, she wants him and the chance to see what could happen.
“I know you’ve always been a forever kind of girl, Charli, but I guess I’m asking you if you could make a few nights into forever with me.”
But when the long buried feelings resurface and only get deeper and they fall irrevocably in love, can they find a way to stay together despite family disapproval, distance and fame or will it be a case of second time unlucky?
Look for the Easter eggs for fans of the authors other series. I loved seeing the crossover and the characters.
I inhaled this book and have dived on the other books in this series. It's a perfect quick, fun, hot, steamy read and I do mean steamy. Wade and Charlene heat up the pages but they do it with humour, love and spice.
Grab one or grab all three books you will not be sorry.
Rating: 3.5 stars
I’m going to be honest, I don’t like the cover to this book. I love Cari Quinn though, so when I received an email asking if I would be interested in reviewing this book, I almost didn’t want to read it because of the cover. I know, I know. That’s like Book Sin #1: Don’t judge a book by its cover. But just… ripped ABS ONLY cause who needs a head, an ACOUSTIC guitar, and a flag of THE LONE STAR STATE just….. so much of everything I wish to avoid not only in books, but in life. With that said, this was a wonderful read and totally worth overlooking the cover.
The good:
+ A short fun read and a nice homey and welcoming feel to the book.
+ Writing has personality. Sassy, sexy, frustration, determination you name it. Quinn is effective at really demonstrating the character’s emotions and feelings without boring her readers and just being cliché and uncreative.
+ I wasn’t a fan of cowboys and Southern boys before reading this, and… I’m still not. But that’s okay because I genuinely liked this because of the author’s execution and writing and that transcends a genre.
The bad:
- Coach was pretty corny and cliché. That just may come with the territory of books in the South. I could have done without his pep talks and coaching sense into Wade. (That cliché pun though.)
The neutral:
- Let’s be honest, I wouldn’t even call the problems in here real conflict or drama. More like, I don’t know stress? Really this isn’t a bad thing though, it’s a light read so there’s nothing crazy going on with the plot.
Overall, read this and other Cari Quinn books. They’re marvelous!
Cari Quinn scored another win with Going Long, part of the Boys of Fall book series with authors Erin Nicholas’ (Out of Bounds) and Mari Carr’s (Free Agent).
Growing up, Wade always played second string to his brother - at home, at school, and with the girl he wanted, Charlene Martinez, who dated then later married his brother. He couldn’t wait to get gone from Quinn, TX and step out of Colt’s shadow.
Twelve years later Wade is a country music star and wealthy beyond belief, yet he’s unhappy with his lonely life and the music he’s pressured to put out. A phone call from one of his former high school teammates sends him back to his hometown to help out on their beloved coach’s ranch while Coach recuperates from a heart attack. Charlene is still in Quinn, single once again and tired of settling. She’d always had feelings for Wade but repressed them since he showed no interest. This time she’s going to claim what she wants and enjoy Wade for however long he’s in town.
This is an emotional minefield fraught with remembered hurts, missed opportunities, and silly assumptions. It’s also a second chance to heal old wounds, open their hearts to love, and explore the chemistry that’s always simmered. The simmering quickly ignites into a raging inferno, making this is one super-hot read.
I love that Wade serenades Charli during their passionate moments. I love Charli’s fieriness and all of the secondary characters introduced. I’ll be impatiently waiting for their stories in the next round of the series.
*The books in the Boys of Fall series can be read in any order since they run concurrently*
