A much stronger outing than the last issue. The stuff with Robin was great, as was the Catwoman and Batman banter. The art also is back to normal, thankfully, cause holy hell the last issue was freaking ROUGH.

Long Halloween didn’t deserve this

Six issues in and I’ve realized this series didn’t need to be written. Between trying to shoehorn this into continuity (the complete random FBI cameo didn’t need to happen) stretching a story that so far could have easily been two issues this just feels like a cash grab. Disappointing.

Six issues in and I feel like about as much has happened as in two issues of the original Long Halloween series. I am pretty much convinced of my hypothesis from previous issues that this story was written as a singular piece and then mangled for an issue-style release. There are more pressing story bits here than last issue, and I will finish the series, but DARK PATTERNS is doing this type of Batman story much better right now. I never hate seeing Mr. Freeze. If we’re lucky, maybe we’ll get some of him in the new Batman movies.

Read as a single issue.

Batman: The Long Halloween: The Last Halloween #6 is a DC Comics issue written by Jeph Loeb, art by Enrico Marini, and colors by Dave Stewart.

When the two FBI agents who were tasked to investigate and protect Mario Falcone are murdered at the hands of the Holiday Killer Copycat, Batman resets his focus on finding out their identity.

This was a great rebound after the last issue’s fumble. There is a lot to like here: Batman teaching Robin to be a better detective, classic Batman villain appearances by Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy, more Batman and Catwoman teases, and even a testy exchange between Batman and Commissioner Gordon.

The art was also much improved in this outing with Enrico Marini bringing his European flair to the noir series, which is a hugely natural fit. It’s tough for me to choose between Eduardo Risso, Cliff Chang, and now Enrico Marini as to who drew the best issue so far.

I mean, I felt like the writing was closer to the original series here but at the same time with only four issues left I have no inkling who is behind this or even why they’re calling it Calendar attacks really (yes I do know why it just feels a stretch)… Because it seems just a mess of attacks and no motives.

3.5 rounded up. Just something off about the last two issues. I’m still liking this farewell/tribute but I hope it picks back up with the good storytelling of the first issues.
