Believing Magic #1

Having never been a recreational reader, Jane Miller is not sure what to think as strange events from the book she’s reading begin to mirror into her everyday life in odd ways. She’s been told to report any unusual ‘side effects’ she experiences while in the drug study, but is ‘book deja-vu’ a side effect, or is it something that’s totally normal when your really into a good book?

A word of warning to the reader - This series is not ideal for those who need a happy ending for all, or those who've never enjoyed a book over 300 pages in length. It is a dark fantasy - please be aware of that before diving in.

Absolutely loved this book!

Bought an early edition of these in print at a little local bakery when I was in St. Augustine Fl that had shelves across the back for local authors to display their books. I gave my print copies of all five books (yes I went back and got the set) to my daughter, so she can enjoy them too. And she is!

I just finished picking up the digital versions for my kindle and saw these reviews! I'm so glad I didn't see these first, because I just don't understand them. I loved the book! The author has a personal style and the structure could use a touch of polish in places, but its certainly been edited and it is easily read. And I'd much prefer a good story with a few sentence catches to something masterfully arranged and totally drab, or something I've already read ten times. This was a truly original story, which is hard to do with everyone copying each other so much these days.

Very good books.

This book was not what I was expecting at all. When I read the book description I was only expecting the story to be about vampires. When I discovered the other characters and their stories, I was surprised, but enjoyed their addition to the story. The story's ending was not what I would have expected at the beginning. The story had many twists and turns, and made for interesting reading. I enjoyed the various characters - Black Rain, Sky, Jane, Ryan, Dan, Believer, etc.. They were diverse yet interesting. They were all very imaginative, and their development went along with the story. I loved the way all the main characters worked together and how their relationships worked into the story. I would have liked to have learned more about Dr. Burgis and what he exactly did to these teens. I look forward to reading more of the books in the series.

I first became a huge fan of the Believing Magic series when it was on Bookrix. I have read the whole series more than once. As soon as I started reading the series I was hooked. The story took me to another place, another world. The author captivated me. I am so excited to now be purchasing all the books! If you have not read this series, please do so. You will not regret it! (I do want to live in Amen Hale!!!!!)

What would happen if a group of unconnected teenagers each got whatever they wanted most in the world? Let's find out shall we...

Enter a cast of teenagers and their parents under the care of an unconventional doctor who's motives are obscure – is he a caring saviour, is he playing God, or is he the devil?
The teenagers, however, are easily recognizable. Jane is the first to be introduced. Neurotic with helicopter parents, she develops a relationship with mysterious and silent Dan. It's as sappy as it comes but 100% seventeen year old teenagers in love. Rain and Ryan are twins with opposing religious views, who develop equal powers based on their beliefs. Sky looks like the ultimate spoiled brat but is in fact the victim of horrific child abuse from her controlling parents; if only she could up and fly away...

There are more where these characters came from, each individual and clearly defined from their peer – they were hand picked by the doctor, after all.

All sounds pretty sweet, yes? Developing magical powers based on your heart's biggest desires? But what if it all goes to far..

“I must have reached over and gently pushed Dad's bottom jaw closed a dozen times when he would start staring and space out, either because of my voice or boobs or something else I'd done. Dad was worried that I hadn't gotten any sleep, so I lied and told him that'd Id' slept for a few hours... I talked with them, laughed with them, and did my best to make what might very well be my last few hours with them as good as they could possibly be.” p199

Yeah, so really liked the premise of this book, but it just didn't grip me. I was surprised to see it billed as a 'Dark Thriller' as I didn't get that from it at all. Maybe I'm just not the target demographic, as the characters were very accurate teenagers, although I did (I admit it, don't tell anyone) enjoy Twilight. Hell, I still enjoy The Worst Witch series! So maybe it was just way too long to be a character- instead of plot-based story. Or the characters weren't compelling enough for it to be a 641 page plot-based novel.

Rating 2/10 – I enjoyed the premise, and the characters after a fashion. And I'm sure there is an audience for this book – and, indeed, series O.o – but it wasn't me. Nor, gentle reader, do I expect it is you.

This book was very hard to read. The premise was exciting, so I looked forward to reading it. But it was too long, had too many main characters, I was confused by the supporting characters, and the whole story was totally rambling. I don't even think the author had a plan when he got started on this one. The choices that the regular people made were completely senseless. It got so bad that my Kindle hovered at 99% complete for two days, because I was so mad at the book, I couldn't even finish it. I had to really psych myself up to finish the last five pages.

Believing Magic by Shane Shelton was a good novel but I had a hard time finding a cohesiveness between the actions/reactions of the main characters who presented more in the style of a pre-teen set and the much more mature audience events playing out within the novels pages. The characters lack of conscience in taking lives was pretty disturbing in these teenagers who seemed to be more in the mode of throwing tantrums.

Believing Magic was an OK read. Some parts were wonderful, I shed some tears and had a few good laughs. Mostly is was kind of weird, but once I got used to it it didn't bother me.

Since you can get this as an ebook for free I'd recommend you to just give it a try, others seem to either love it or hate it. I at least got a bunch of hours of enjoyment. :)

I'm not sure if I'm going to read the rest of the series, I think I'll read some stuff from my TBR list first and decide later.
