The Survivalist #4

Madness Rules

Rate this book
★★★ The Survivalist is "a cool cross between Justified and The Walking Dead." ★★★

★★★ Check out Dr. Bradley's new apocalyptic western, "The Watchman." ★★★

Few heroes remain in the apocalyptic wasteland of the United States. Deputy Marshal Mason Raines is one such hero. Still reeling from the death of his beloved, he is recruited to confront a band of ruthless lawmen. Only as bodies begin to pile up, does he question whether his latest mission was less about justice and more about revenge.

Meanwhile, Tanner and Samantha travel south toward Mount Weather for a long overdue reunion. When Samantha falls ill, Tanner is forced to compete in a brutal fight club to secure medical care. After discovering her mother's fate, Samantha insists on a risky detour to the nation's capital. If they are to have any chance of making it out alive, they must delve into the bowels the city to discover a closely guarded secret.

After the attack on President Rosalyn Glass, Lincoln Pike finally seizes the reins of power. With hopes of returning the country to greatness, he initiates sweeping measures to rebuild colonies, establish a gold-backed currency, and gain complete control of the military. Little do others realize that his inability to cope with a devastating loss has started him down a treacherous path toward madness.

Events have made me who I am, neither a hardcore survivalist nor an all-trusting soul. I am a Boy Scout in the truest sense of the word—dedicated to family, country, and good citizenship. As you may already know, an enabling element of those ideals is being prepared.

It took the horrific events of 9/11 to wake me from my routine complacency. In one single moment, I came to realize that our world is not as safe as we would all like to believe. We have no guarantee of safety in this world. Disasters occur on an almost daily basis all around the globe. Major events in recent years have included the devastating tsunamis striking Japan and the coast of Sumatra, the rash of tornadoes that swept across the U.S. in 2011, Hurricane Katrina, the deadly earthquake in Haiti, and the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to name just a few.

I believe with all my heart that we have a duty to prepare our families for the dangers they face. I started my preparation by reading nearly every disaster preparedness book currently available. If you check Amazon, you will see that I am the #1 reviewer for many of these books. Even with all the material out there, I could not find a single book that offered a complete, well-reasoned approach to practical preparedness. As a NASA engineer, I took up the challenge by conducting very careful research – disecting fact from folklore. Three years and many thousands of dollars later, I have finally released a handbook that offers well-researched advice that can be put into practice in the real world by normal families.

I wrote this handbook for my own family, but I would be honored to share it with yours. If you are not fully satisfied with the Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family, send it back, and I’ll refund your money, no questions asked.

These books continue to be a great adventure as the challenges continue to be flung at Tanner and Sam as they make their way to deliver the message for a dead man leading them into further challenges and confrontations.

The little quirks of Sam's mistakes are amusing and add a little humour to an otherwise difficult situation and Tanner's reactions are funny as he doesn't correct her.

Meanwhile, Mason agrees to help out a woman bent on revenge, though things take a drastic turn which make it difficult for him to reconcile his morals against the actions taken. He's also one step closer to finding answers about those involved in the death of his love, Ava and all the Marshalls at Glynco, but just as he's getting close, things take a horrible turn.

Great series, fun to read, fast action.

Really enjoying the series. The two main characters are enjoyable and well written with really good dialogue. The only negative thing I'll say is the books are too short because you want to read more. It's more of a novella but still it feels like a thrill Ride when you're done one of the books. Minor inconsistency or logic never really come into play, definitely not enough to ruin the story. Really enjoying it as a whole and can't wait to see where the story turns out recommend to anyone who likes a what -if- this -happens types genre.!

Consistent, Reliable, and a Great Story!

Book 4 continues the adventures of Deputy Marshall Mason Raines. A man with a sense of honor, he makes his way through a world turned upside down by disease but the survivors facing a greater threat - man's evil nature. Raines isn't perfect, but his code of honor serves him well. Mother characters are also followed which should lead to some interesting interactions when they meet. Think "Justified" meets "The Walking Dead". Terrific story, solidly written. This should be made into a screen play.

This latest installment in the series is an entertaining read that revisits familiar territory from the previous books. The exploration of the chaotic nature of US leadership, along with the developing storylines of Tanner and Samantha, really stood out for me.

However, I found Mason's arc in this book a bit lackluster and forgettable. That said, the series continues to captivate me, which is impressive given the grand scale of the story.

The only real problem I have with the series is how often the two main characters get laid and the absurd situations in which it happens (a week or so after the love of your life is tortured to death).

From the frying pan into the fire

An excellent continuation of the ongoing saga as things keep getting worse. Some of the bad guys get what's coming to them and some have no clue as to what is headed their way. I can't wait to see what happens next!!

Madness does rule. I read and enjoyed this entire series. I wasn't really wanting it to go mutant zombie...I think hordes of starving violent humans are always more interesting.

What I've tried to do is bring the madness out in the open.Keep it under wraps, and it erupts into wars and violence.-Previn

Well, I've finished book 4 in THE SURVIVALIST series (MADNESS RULES) and each book has captured and held my interest more than the last. I've rated each book with 5 stars and it's very rarely that I find an entire series that I'm able to rank so highly.

I've come to know the characters more and more with each book and wish I knew them in real life. Tanner and young Sam banter back and forth and are daily growing fonder of each other. Mason is a man of integrity and honor, trying to find answers as to why so many of his fellow U.S. Marshals were killed in Georgia. And that big galumphing dog Bowie - love him.

I've read:

Book 1 - "Frontier Justice (The Survivalist)"
Book 2 - "Anarchy Rising (The Survivalist)"
Book 3 - "Judgment Day (The Survivalist)"

The cover art on each book continues to be exceptional and the inner illustrations are detailed and relevant.

Even though Mason and Tanner keep getting caught up in outlandish and or dangerous actions (maniacal clowns anyone), the stories are engrossing and don't seem so unbelievable when in the middle of the story.

I'm now getting ready to start Book 5 - "Battle Lines (The Survivalist)." I just wish the final book was completed and available - Book 6 - FINEST HOUR (THE SURVIVALIST). I don't handle waiting too well and it's not due out until May 2015.

Note: this review is based upon a complimentary copy of the novel tendered by the author.

If Goodreads was not so restrictive in its grading then I would have given The Survivalist (Madness Rules) a 4.5 out of 5. I enjoyed reading the latest installment of The Survivalist series by Dr. Arthur T. Bradley and I would definitely recommend it both to others who are familiar with the collection of novels and those who might be discovering it for the first time; with that said, I also feel like this work does not measure up to the high quality established by its predecessors.

The strengths of Madness Rules versus the previous novels in the series are the dialogue between Tanner and Samantha (which, in my opinion, keeps improving and grows more entertaining with each book) and the twists that occur throughout the text. Without giving anything away, there were two instances that I felt were completely unexpected and, as a result, were utterly awesome aspects that set up potentially great moments in the next novel. I also enjoyed the fact that the milieus the characters find themselves in this time wind up being considerable departures from the typical post-apocalyptic environs explored by the average author. Though they might stretch the reader's ability to suspend disbelief, they worked for me and provided a fresh change from the ground that has already been covered.

I definitely recommend reading the novel and look forward very much to the next one coming down the line.

This is an outstanding series of a post-apocalyptic nature in which a disease of Smallpox-99 virus hits the entire world. The main story line is about how one survives without all the modern conveniences that we all take for granted today and those in the book series have to do without and survive. This is a very well written storyline that has action, drama, sadness and a little bit of comedy in the bantering that goes on between the characters.

Others have stated that this is not a good series to read. I disagree with their assessment and confirm that if one reads this series, start with the first novel "The survivalist - Frontier Justice" and you will be hooked!

Mason continues to hunt down the perpetrators of the U.S. Marshals massacre and the torture and death of his girlfriend Ava. As much as Mason hates to admit the resemblance to his father, the apple does not fall far from the tree.
Tanner meanwhile has gotten his charge Samantha back to Washington only to find that her mother the president has supposedly been assassinated by a member of her own staff. Tanner breaks the bad news to Sam, but she has been growing stronger and more mature via her association with Tanner and accepts the grievous news with courage and resolve beyond her years. Now what?

Circumstances guide some, but not most

I question why these two men - father and son, on separate paths in this story series would both risk their lives to help others not only survive, but help them on their personal quest of revenge, deliver news, rescue strangers again, at great risk to themselves. I am impressed with these men and the tales of their adventures. Without the exaggerated almost immortal survival of these men I wouldn't be reading the books, yes, that's the answer to my own question, cause sure as I'm typing this, I'm not going down the path these two men are treading for anyone, or would I?

I'm enjoying this series at least as much as the very popular Going Home series. It has much the same feeling. I don't know why this one doesn't have the same following. Goodreads doesn't even properly show these books as being part of a series.

I'm looking forward to the fifth book in the series (Battle Lines) in December!

It was okay but I've waiting for more progress at the end of Book 3 (this one is Book 4)and it seems that the author was trying to prolong the story : annoying.

Hoping that Book 5 in december will bring us more answers and finality.

Very Good Suspenseful!

I have read all four of the series in just a few days, could not put it down. The suspense is never ending. The only thing I didn't care for was the constant gory details, it was a little much for me.

The fourth installment in this series is as good if not better than the first three. Twists and unexpected turns keep you on your toes and leave you wondering where you will end up.
