FINDING MY LOST VOICE: By Acting Justly, Loving Kindness and Walking Humbly with God

Reclaim Your Voice, Reshape The Future

In Finding My Lost Voice, author Basil Sparks challenges the status quo and speaks to those who feel sidelined and shut down, to those who believe it’s safer to remain silent than to risk being shamed into silence. He reminds readers that to shape a better, collective future, they must courageously reclaim their voice.

Provocative yet sensitive, Sparks steps carefully into controversial conversations that have polarised the world, inspiring readers to think critically and engage constructively with each topic—whether discussing White privilege, homosexuality, body image, or the complexities of supporting Israel or Palestine. He encourages readers to reject mob mentality, embrace free speech, and learn to think independently.

Sparks’s unique perspective is that of a heterosexual, White, Christian man in his late 50s—a voice some may prefer to cancel! Yet he speaks, calling readers to embody three indispensable qualities that should characterise every engagement: justice, kindness, and humility.

Standing at the intersection of conviction and complacency, readers must choose: Will they settle for a life of quiet desperation? Or will they ignore the voices that seek to silence them? Will they find their lost voice?

Enlightening and Challenging
I was enlightened and challenged by FINDING MY LOST VOICE: By Acting Justly, Loving Kindness and Walking Humbly with God. This book by Basil Sparks helps Christians understand the philosophy behind the culture and demystifies some of the confusing terminology we hear daily in the news and social media. The title comes from how today’s world has silenced the voice of a white, heterosexual, male, Christian Pastor.

The author takes a fair and balanced approach to his topic. Using Micah 6:8, he shows us how to better navigate, with love and understanding, a world that’s becoming increasingly hostile toward the Bible and Christianity. He creates scenarios and situations and give us biblical, non-threatening answers for some of the tougher questions we might be asked. He shows us how we can remain true to the unchanging Word of God without sacrificing our compassion for complex people.

Basil Sparks is a very deep, but clear thinker and his book speaks to the needs of both heart and mind at this moment. The book presents thoughtful honesty coupled with a unique form of grounded hope which stands out in current times. Although the book tackles deep subjects, anyone who approaches this work need not have theological training but should possess a sense of curiosity, or be in search of meaning, or struggling with faith in our present time. I found Chapter 2 which focuses on biblical manhood to be a standout.

I highly recommend FINDING MY LOST VOICE: By Acting Justly, Loving Kindness and Walking Humbly with God to anyone who might be confused about cancel culture, and who may feel puzzled about how to respond as a follower of Jesus Christ. This book doesn’t give easy answers, but it does offer readers ways to embrace life by living courageously and lovingly while staying focused on Jesus Christ.

What a wonderful book!

Basil Sparks has crafted a book unlike any I have read. And in a very good manner. He covers nine areas: privilege; invalidation; canceling; false teaching; appropriate pride in his fallible homeland; being a peacemaker; poverty and vulnerability; humility, self-image and sexual temptation; and finally, growing old and remaining relevant.

Now I personally feel guilty at being white in a world that has caused atrocities against others, and specifically blacks, but the author is definitely not racist, and speaks out for racial equality, but feels that reverse racism is also unfortunate and wants it to come to an end. I think that might take a long time, maybe longer than we imagine.

The books hinges on God's Word, but specifically on Micah 6:8, which calls us as Christians to righteousness, mercy and humility; these are things Christians as myself have been known to lack as well as perhaps known to live out, but while many things Sparks writes about may seem obvious, his collection of topics, as given, map out and create an atmosphere that can help to rewire us back to proper behavior and a more loving, just world.

This is the second book, but very different otherwise from the last such, that has, while not the Word of God, specifically, helped me to change and grow as a person. I can say that while some books transport us, and some leave us thrilled or comforted, Finding My Lost Voice', can help the reader like a compass, truing him or her to a better standard, growing its audience closer to the maker, to make society a little more just, merciful and humble, like throwing starfishes back in the ocean, restoring one life at a time.

This book was a breath of fresh air for me. I talks about all the trappings of modern day living as a Christian from the perspective of a white South African.

I connected very deeply to me personally as I am white, my wife is black and are both Christian. It also gave me much to reflect professionally upon as plan to make a statue of Nelson Mandela in the very near future. This book came at the right time and will defiantly go through it again.

Plenty in here to chew through and would make a great study for a group of friends.

It does not shy away from asking the most important questions and considers them all through a deeply Christian lens.

"Kindness is the most powerful force in this world. This is especially true when it is experienced in men. I can disagree with you but if I am kind to you, it makes a difference," senior pastor and author, Basil Sparks writes in this powerfully poignant and refreshingly transparent book that defies categorization. Sparks doesn't let himself be pinned down - is this a narrative devotional, a memoir, an inspirational tome - it is all of those, it seems, and is so encapsulated by his perfectly priceless thoughts on kindness. For, as he rightly ascertains, kindness "is a powerful force that breaks down cruelty, builds bridges of trust, and acknowledges that everyone has a battle to fight. Kindness helps close and heal oozing wounds, breaks down doors of bitterness and unforgiveness, and makes life a little easier for those who are the recipients of it."

Though Pastor Sparks covers the gamut of topics - from white privilege, which he admittedly really HAS experienced as a white man in South Africa, to cancel culture and the anger it engenders...to sexual immorality couched as modernism, to the fashion of religious post-modernism and the rejection of traditional mores and norms that encompasses, and true faith, which is that in our LORD Jesus Christ, he does not shy away from truth, THE Truth, Personified in Jesus. And it is always, unyeildingly so, written in a way that demonstrates kindness of heart. For "love is patient, love is kind" (I Cor. 13:4). And one gets the sense that this amazing pastor knows all too well the kindness of the LORD and His Christ.

I'm married to an older white Christian man who has felt cancelled, like the author, by many in society who look at him as an enemy based on being white, a man, older, and a Christian. Do the people who write off my husband or Paster Sparks know them? If they did, I believe they would eat their words. We cannot write others off based on generalities like these. In my opinion, Basil's book, Finding My Lost Voice, is a must-read for men and women of any color, age, or beliefs. Basil speaks into the heart of feeling cancelled by society, even though he serves others as a pastor in South Africa.

Basil bravely walks the plank amid different views, looking for his voice that some of society deems unworthy and worse yet, worthless. Basil's voice in each chapter is tempered, thoughtful, humble, truthful, and full of curiosity.

The book is so well written, I couldn't put it down. Its story takes us through, “I am white”, “I am a man”, “I am heterosexual”, “I am a Christian pastor”, “I am South African”, “I am part of the global community”, “I am poor”, “I am unattractive”, and “I am old”. These are seemingly deemed as reasons to nullify Basil's voice. But as he says, “Everyone has a voice. But for many, it is finding the voice they have lost, so they can use it again. Some have been shamed into silence, others have lost the courage to speak, others know they cannot speak without being gaslighted into silence, others do not believe they have anything valuable to say, and there may even be those who believe it is not their responsibility to speak up. Nevertheless, they must speak.”

Pastor Sparks also writes, “We must find our lost voice so we can use it for what God says is important, for what He requires of us. And He tells us what he requires, that we act justly, love kindness and walk humbly with God.”

Each of us has a responsibility to listen to voices different than echoes of our own beliefs. And each of us must be unafraid to speak and not allow our voices to be silenced or feel unworthy. Basil teaches us how. I'd get a copy of Finding Your Lost Voice now. It is timely and helpful, a book I didn’t know how badly both my husband and I needed.

5 descriptors of Basil Sparks’ “Finding My Lost Voice”.

Basil is the 2nd South African I have had to pleasure to learn from this year. The first came to see us in South Dakota for a conference, and Basil came into my circle through a Goodreads connection.

I am so happy he did. I am excited to read more from him. I’ve pulled two sections which I found to be compelling & boldly honest.

One,

“You may wonder why I tell you that story. I tell it because it is becoming increasingly common to declare someone gay for all the wrong reasons. As a result, individuals may wrestle with their identity because ‘obviously I must be gay.’ This is simply not true. Society’s view on sexuality has become increasingly unhealthy and problematic, confusing people further by selling them a lie.”

Two,

“I will never know her name, nor will I ever be able to apologise. I didn’t know it then, but the guilt I felt in that moment would define me. I would never laugh at a poor person again. I knew at that moment that God was unimpressed, even offended, by what I had done.
My privilege had become my weapon of abuse.”

Real thoughts, I’ve had them. Real vulnerability, I’ve experienced that, too.

Addressing social disorders is never easy, especially when expectations vary. Basil is a wise pastor who articulates things well, challenging but insightful. He draws attention to real issues, calling us to engage with those same issues and to grow through the experience. Finding My Lost Voice is an opportunity to stop and think more deeply. I’m richer for the experience!

Half of it is good Christian stuff, the other half is concern over losing white privilege.
The book is casual in tone, avoiding a deep theological style, but it is wordy. Sparks concludes each chapter with three short points about the chapter: to act justly, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. So far so good, very Christian. The problem is that the book constantly falls into the patriarchal trap: God's original design has been corrupted, Sparks has something SPECIAL to say BECAUSE he is a straight white man, and white men have been unjustly silenced.

Sparks provides a long history lesson on South Africa, but I am just not buying the alleged injustice being done to Sparks. Sparks lets us know how he feels about racism, homosexuality, Gaza, South African politics, and more. But the book often shifts from "finding" a voice to "taking back" the voice.

In the Preface, Sparks asks, "I am a White man. Does that mean I am automatically guilty and, therefore, forfeit my right to speak?" Wrong question. The correct question is about what divine purpose has been assigned, and how to fulfill it. Discern our divinely given gifts, to be used to help meet the needs of others. If this is a political book, then leave all the Jesus stuff out of it.

"When it has become popular, even fashionable, to step away from traditional sexual orientation and embrace alternative expressions of sexuality, and when a traditional understanding of sexuality is cancelled… I am heterosexual."
Bully for you, Mr. Sparks, as he calls out "God's original design." Maybe Sparks doesn't understand God's original design as well as he thinks. Or maybe God has a new design. Whatever the case, it's not for Sparks to say, simply because he is a white male heterosexual. Sparks provides an extended explanation of homosexuality, which flows into an extended defense of the freedom of speech. In other words, Sparks thinks he is free to say whatever he wants about homosexuality, so don't try to take away his voice.

The notes on Mother Theresa provide a wonderful contrast. Definitely not the suggestions of a white man.
The chapter about helping the poor is good, although it's largely about Sparks telling the rest of us what to do.

Sparks on the war in Gaza: "Whilst I recognise that God may have a special plan for Israel, I am also aware that most Jews are not God-fearing." It is true that most Jews do not accept Jesus as The Messiah, but that's pretty provocative. Gaza is not just a matter of which side to support. It is a matter of which injustices to call out. Enough injustices to go around in Gaza, that's for sure. Sparks provides a long lesson on Gaza, but then all he can do is ask if there is another way, rather than the current war.

Sparks: "Avoid gaslighting people." Seriously? The whole diatribe against homosexuality is one big gaslight.

The chapter about the way our societies pressure us to feel about our bodies is well intentioned, but neither Sparks nor I know enough about body image dissatisfaction to write about this. I would not recommend this chapter to anyone having these concerns.

"HOW TO BE KIND, AS AN OLDER PERSON: - Lose the chip on your shoulder."
But this book is like one big chip on Sparks' shoulder.

I won't give away the final sentence. God's purpose for me is about helping to meet the needs of others, without an expectation of an earthly benefit (or voice).

Finding My Lost Voice addresses several important topics facing many of us today. My first thought after reading the first couple of chapters was that these are some very brave topics to write about. But these are topics that must be talked about. It tackles some difficult issues in our society today in an objective but humble manner. This book will resonate with many readers who have similar questions on their minds but are not sure how to engage publicly on such sensitive issues. Finding My Lost Voice is a great resource for those who feel they no longer have a voice, but also for those who just want to make sense of the crazy world we are living in. At the end of each chapter, there is some practical advice and personal reflection questions on how to act justly, love kindness, and live humbly in the context of each topic. Each chapter concludes with some discussion questions, making this a valuable resource for small group discussions. This book has helped me find my voice again!

In Finding My Lost Voice, Basil has authored a stimulating and provocative book, the contents of which demonstrate clearly that his own voice is not lost, and is neither ambiguous nor irrelevant. The perspective of the writing is from that of a middle-aged white male having lived in South Africa most, if not all of his life, but the relevance and applicability of the book's message is global and multi-generational - there is wisdom and guidance here for men and women of all ages, in many countries.

Finding My Lost Voice succeeds in encouraging the reader not only to think meaningfully about how they feel about a range of very important aspects of how society has evolved over the last few decades and their contributions to it, but also to think about whether they should change their thinking, their behaviour and their attitudes towards these aspects. It made me sit back and think "Do I behave like that?"; "Do I convey that type of impression to other people?" Reading the book also made me realise that I could and should be doing more to contribute to the community and society in which I live, and from which I benefit hugely.

In tackling each of his topics from the Christian perspective of Acting Justly, Loving Kindness and Walking Humbly with God, Basil challenges all of us, including himself, to follow God's Word more faithfully, more consistently and more often. Our reward for so doing will be finding our voices, and enabling them to make a difference in an increasingly confusing and volatile world. Basil effortlessly links higher level Christian doctrine to practical day-to-day guidance for how to be a better Christian, and in this way Finding My Lost Voice is a highly valuable resource.

Don't delay in reading it!

This is a great book to read. In society today, a person is almost afraid to speak out against some things, especially controversial subjects. Pastor Sparks writes about this and covers many areas. He tells us we need to speak out and not be afraid, especially when it comes to justice and do it with kindness, love, and understanding. Below are some quotes from the book. I believe you will be challenged, and it may change how you think and handle some situations. I highly recommend this book.

pg. 171 "Every day, we have moments when we either stand for justice or turn and look the other way. Justice challenges us to stand for what is right, even when it is difficult and unpopular. "

pg. 176 "Every appearance of injustice whether in war, abuse, discrimination, inequality, corruption, persecution, privilege, etc. must be informed by who God is and what it is that He expects of us. The world is broken, and when Jesus Christ confronted injustice head-on, He was only doing what the Father had told Him
to".

pg. 240 "Everyone has a voice. Nevertheless, they must speak. "

pg.241 "You can find your lost voice by acting justly, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God."

Finding My Lost Voice is a bold, deeply personal, and thought-provoking exploration of identity, faith, and the courage to speak up in an increasingly polarised world. Basil Sparks writes with honesty and conviction, tackling sensitive and often controversial topics such as race, privilege, gender, faith, and societal change through the lens of his lived experiences in South Africa.

Anchored in the biblical call to “act justly, love kindness, and walk humbly with God,” the book invites readers to wrestle with uncomfortable truths without resorting to defensiveness or despair. Sparks is unafraid to admit his own failings, biases, and moments of blindness, making the narrative feel both vulnerable and authentic.

Each chapter centres on a “voice” — from the Voice of Privilege to the Voice of the Invalidated, the Voice Cancelled, and others — weaving together personal stories, real-world events, and spiritual reflection. Sparks draws on history, current affairs, and his pastoral work to illustrate how individuals can reclaim their voice in a society that often seeks to silence dissenting or unfashionable perspectives.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its balance between challenge and grace. Sparks does not shy away from calling out injustice, whether historic or contemporary, but he also urges humility, empathy, and the building of bridges across divisions. The personal reflection questions and group discussion prompts at the end of chapters make it a valuable resource for both individual readers and study groups.

Whether or not you share all of Sparks’ views, Finding My Lost Voice will make you think, reflect, and — perhaps — re-examine your own place in the conversation. It is a courageous and timely work that dares to say what many are thinking but are reluctant to voice, offering a roadmap for speaking truth with compassion.

A compelling, challenging, and ultimately hopeful read for anyone seeking to live with integrity, faith, and courage in turbulent times.

Just finished your book, Basil. Thank you. A well-considered look at such big topics written through the humble pen of someone expressing their voice about topics that aren't always wisely discussed. You have created tracks for healthy interaction on these topics. And so many poignant illustrations. A big effort to think Biblical truth through relevant issues.

Finding My Lost Voice by Basil Sparks is one of those books that stops you in your tracks—in the best way. It’s honest, bold, and deeply personal. Basil doesn't shy away from the hard stuff—he calls it out with humility and grace. He reminds us that we can grow, and that staying silent isn’t the answer.

Each chapter ties into Micah 6:8, asking how we can act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God in today’s world. Basil shares his personal story—including things that could easily get him “canceled”—but he does it to show how we, as Christians, can still speak truth and love well in a world that often doesn’t want either.

Favorite quote: “Every day, we have moments when we either stand for justice or turn and look the other way. Justice challenges us to stand for what is right, even when it is difficult and unpopular.”

This book challenged me, encouraged me, and gave me practical ways to live out my faith more boldly. If you’ve ever felt caught between speaking up and staying quiet, this book is for you.

A Voice Transformed : From Silence to Challenging

I was eager to read this book written by Basil Sparks. The author is a white, older, heterosexual male, who tasted the perceived, tremendous privilege offered him living in a segregated white-dominated South Africa, and the proverbial ‘turn of the tables’ by the demise of the Apartheid era in the 1990’s. Knowing that Basil is a Baptist Church Pastor did not prevent me from expecting a certain level of lamentation to creep into his writing – after all, most ‘Whites’ , especially males within the same age and social group as Basil tend to lament and vent on social media platforms, at social gatherings, and even in every day conversations. Furthermore, no person, irrespective of race or creed, is immune to reacting somewhat negatively in having certain privileges removed, in watching how ageing makes you become somewhat irrelevant, in being reminded by changing global social moods that your beliefs are outdated and archaic… and the title of “Finding my Lost Voice” can easily be misinterpreted as now finding a voice, but one of complaints, allegations and lamentations.

However, this book is far from it! It is challenging and thought-provoking. It is a book of truths, written by a person whose identity is undoubtedly deeply rooted in Jesus Christ. A man who by his own admission regards himself a follower of Christ first and foremost. A man whose vision is Christ, and who strives to become what Christ ultimately wants him to be. Not lamenting on what was, what could have been, what should have been, but rather focusing on what is, what can be – with the responsibility being placed on the reader to be the change, to become the change, to ignite change, by becoming a voice once silenced (or just silent by choice), now heard.

Basil is South African, and although this book is written mostly from his South African perspective, its content can be beneficial to readers across country borders. Interspersed with the occasional anecdote, it expresses hard truths about our fragility, our vulnerabilities as ‘man’, as well as our responsibilities - of being part of a community, a country, a global citizen. Hard truths ranging from local politics to global conflicts, and contentious issues, are highlighted with the level of sensitivity needed given the fact that these issues have divided nations and neighbors alike.

All nine chapters are eloquently presented, truthful yet not damning, hopeful rather than accusatory – each chapter filled with practical guidelines and principles the reader can adopt and introduce on a personal level into everyday lives when dealing with the sensitive, sometimes uncomfortable, issues mentioned. Not all the burning issues come with clear-cut, easy solutions. Neither does Basil assume to have all the answers – He himself mentions in one chapter, in particular, that “there are good and necessary questions, and questions unable to adequately answer”. Truth is, we don’t always have all the answers readily available – but let’s start the conversation – let’s have our voices heard.

I in particularly appreciate the challenging and thought-provoking questions and the ‘Bible Snapshot’ at the end of each chapter – for me this will ensure that the reader meditate on the issues and questions raised long after reading the content.

I will certainly meditate on it… and I too will strive to act justly, to love kindness and to walk humbly with God.

This was a very interesting book and written from the heart. It talked about the authors personal growth growing up in his country. Apartheid was his earliest memory that caused him to be more sympathetic to the black people. He continues to talk about numerous social and personal issues in his country. It's partially about his changing attitudes throughout a lifetime. He speaks up against evil, injustice and hatred but does so in a kind, gentle, loving way. He stressed being kind, loving and seeking justice in all facets of life. Although I did find some constant repetitions, the reading at times was long and tedious, I did enjoy his point of view. It was a heartfelt story and beautifully written. A good book and great Author!

This book is an easy read with a clear and engaging flow, yet it challenges the reader to think deeply. Because of this, I found myself spending more time on it than I had initially expected.

As a Bible-believing Christian, I found the topics covered in this book highly relevant to today’s world. Without a clear understanding of these issues, one might feel out of touch or even question the validity of Christian beliefs in modern society.

The book offers true wisdom, providing a refreshing yet straightforward perspective on how Christians can navigate topics such as apartheid, identity, political matters, even interactions with the elderly and many others. It beautifully demonstrates how Christian values and virtues can be applied to create meaningful change, regardless of societal expectations. This is precisely the kind of guidance needed today.

Encouraging, insightful, and incredibly relevant!

Esme Tucker (Speech and Language Therapist): This was an amazing read. Each chapter brought a new challenge and was so applicable to the life we're living at this moment in time. I learnt so much and cannot wait to hold a hard copy of this book in my hand and re-read the parts that resonated with me. The author has an extraordinary way in describing difficult issues, explaining the background and concluding in a manner that leaves the reader equipped to act justly, love kindness and walk humbly with God.

Finding My Lost Voice helped and encouraged me to embrace diversity and all the "challenges" that we face today. Not to conform to current emerging beliefs and trends in education and the "enhanced" focus on human rights. I could personally relate to each chapter. What was confirmed to me was to always act justly (staying true to my ethical principles), show love and kindness no matter what and stay humble in all that you do. Never be afraid to speak out and stay true to my beliefs.

| Finding My Voice – Honest, Bold, and Thought-Provoking

"Finding My Lost Voice" tells the story of Barry, a high-performing student whose dream of becoming a doctor is cut short by redress policies in post-apartheid South Africa. His story is emotional, raw, and challenges readers to wrestle with difficult questions around merit, opportunity, and racial identity.

The book not only explores themes of fairness and discrimination but also encourages readers not to be bullied into silence—especially when speaking up about personal injustice is seen as invalid because of perceived privilege. It’s a bold reminder that every voice matters, and that standing for truth doesn’t mean denying others' pain.

This book opens a necessary conversation about justice, reconciliation, and the future of South Africa.

While I truly wish everybody in the world could read/listen with openness and self-reflection and WITHOUT defensiveness and small-mindedness, unfortunately that is not the case. For that reason, I don’t think that this read is for everybody, as many controversial and potentially triggering topics are talked about. HOWEVER, I do believe that Basil’s intention behind this book’s message is to challenge the reader’s opinions and allow them to reflect on their own personal beliefs. I believe that the negative emotions (perhaps anger, irritation eg.) that one may feel while reading these raw words is a rather important aspect of this book as a whole.

At the start of the book, Basil confesses his concerns of his words/messaging being interpreted in the wrong way and makes it clear that his intentions are not to judge or upset anybody. This book truly shows Basil’s admirable vulnerability and transparency. In this book, Basil uses real stories from a diverse collection of people who have experienced different issues. I find it incredible that Basil wanted to create a platform to talk about these various issues. And rather than act like he knows all of the answers, Basil relies on the personal experiences of people who have been through it, to share their authentic messages and to learn from.

As previously mentioned, I believe a fundamental reason for the writing of this book was to allow readers the opportunity for deep introspection. It is clear that this book uses self-reflection and self-questioning as a very powerful tool. Each chapter ends off with a series of ‘personal reflection questions’, as well as group discussion questions (however, these are just as interesting and fruitful to answer by oneself).

I do need to make note that this is indeed targeted towards a Christian audience, with each chapter ending with advice about how to ‘act justly, love kindness and walk humbly with God’ in relation to the chapter’s message. HOWEVER, this book’s message is far broader than what one would hear at a Church sermon and I would highly recommend it to anyone- Christian, or not (I will say again… only for those who are willing to be open-minded and introspective). The purpose of this book is to expose controversial topics and talk honestly and openly about how stereotypes and stigmas affect us- and that is something that every single person needs to hear and process.

I have a personal note for those who may read a chapter that is particularly sensitive to them-

I am a Christian, heterosexual female, but I also work in the creative industry where being eccentric and liberal is the norm. I also have many homosexual friends, whom I care about dearly. This has made the topic of homosexuality a rather sensitive and complicated one for me. Although I may not be so sure where I stand in relation to some of the words written in this chapter, I can still completely respect them and reflect on them. I remain open-minded and able to read different perspectives while being introspective, and that, I believe, is important for everybody.

FINDING MY VOICE by Basil Sparks is a bold, truthful, and personal exposition of the writer's candid convictions and perspectives on issues many people will avoid. This is the book's appeal to readers. In nine chapters, the writer uses himself to represent many people who might have lost their voice because of their gender, race, age, financial status, sexual orientation, faith, appearance, career, and being part of a global community. These topics drew me in.

Each chapter delves into full details, with the writer’s experiences, quotes from the Bible and other vital sources, explanations, advice, suggestions, and group discussion questions on the themes raised. The book corrected some assumptions I held about White and Black South Africans. The writer adopts a serious tone and believes in breaking the walls of silence for our voice to be heard fearlessly. He broaches on controversial issues irrespective of his diverse readers' notions. I found this appealing and engaging.

Sparks speaks powerfully on the themes of generalisation, friendships, faith, love, male identity, sex, kindness, unity in diversity, racism and God with relevant explanations. He shows that he is against self-righteousness. He advises against people focusing on Truth at the expense of Grace and vice versa. He desires that people be kind, have a genuine relationship with God, experience His peace, love, and freedom, and confidently have a secure future. He believes that if people learn to hate, they can be taught to love. He encourages Christians to gently and respectfully add their voice to relevant topics.

It is clear how the writer found his lost voice by being loving and kind, acting justly, and most importantly, walking humbly with God through the personal testimonies given in different contexts. He points out that many people get help outside the church [ where his voice should have been most relevant!] I have enjoyed reading this unique read. As a Christian reader, I have been encouraged in my vulnerability. I’m reminded that God wants me to know His love and plans. Sparks mentions,’ A man’s walk with God is the most important thing about him.’

This book will greatly encourage and strengthen your faith in God, foster unity, and help you find your voice, regardless of who and what you are. I highly recommend it. It is worth five stars.

As a White male in today's society, I've often felt a peculiar kind of silencing. It's as if my demographic automatically disqualifies my perspective, or makes my experiences less valid in certain conversations. "FINDING MY LOST VOICE" by Basil Sparks has been an incredibly refreshing and affirming read precisely because it confronts this feeling head-on, not with anger or defensiveness, but with a profound call to truth and a courageous willingness to engage with challenging topics.

What truly impressed me about this book is its non-partisan approach. In a world saturated with divisive rhetoric, Sparks seems purely concerned with uncovering and articulating truth, rather than pushing any particular agenda. He dives into highly controversial subjects – from White privilege to homosexuality – with a sensitivity and thoughtfulness that encourages genuine critical thinking, rather than mob mentality. His unique perspective as a heterosexual, White, Christian man in his late 50s in South Africa isn't just acknowledged; it's utilized as a starting point for exploring these complex issues, and he does so with remarkable humility.

The analytical depth in each chapter is excellent, providing nuanced insights and actionable applications. I particularly loved how every discussion is framed through the lens of Micah 6:8 – acting justly, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God. This biblical anchor provides a moral compass that elevates the entire discourse, making it not just a book about finding your voice, but about using it in a way that honors God and promotes genuine understanding. This book is a vital resource for anyone who feels sidelined or silenced, and a powerful reminder that our voices matter, especially when guided by justice, kindness, and humility.

As a fellow white South African Christian man, I was intrigued and challenged by Basil Sparks's candor and humility in the treatment of the current realities of South Africa. Sparks gently but convincingly addresses factors that have silenced so many over issues of ethnicity, gender, religion, social standing, appearance, and age. His humble treatment of topics that others shrink away from drew me in to read the book with ever increasing interest.

He examines the realities of South Africa from an undefended Christian perspective and a remarkable authenticity that honors our collective history while acknowledging our guilt and our vulnerability. He offers an unpretentious response to the current realities of this wonderful land and presents realistic approaches to the challenges that have paralyzed so many of us who wish for better response to our own weaknesses.

I found the practical advice on how to live justly, love mercy, and walk humbly to be gentle, real, and honest. There is no sense of judgement or triumphalism in Sparks's writing, rather there is open, undefended acknowledgement of past errors and inspiring hope for the future.

While this book is clearly written for the South Africa audience, the treatment of justice, mercy and humility, is valid for everyone from any context who is wrestling with the current age of "correctness" that smacks of a forced denial of reality and humanity.

I personally have been challenged and enriched by reading this remarkable book and will gift it to many of my friends.

Basil Sparks' work--Finding My Lost Voice is a gem amongst Christian reads. As I read, the scripture, 1 Corinthians 15:58 kept coming to mind:

"Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain."~(NIV)

I enjoyed the high-spirited energy of Sparks' writing; the flow and format, along with a call to action of Micah 6:8 being repeated throughout the book for Believers in Christ Jesus to be an answer and compass in guiding one back to Salvation and being spiritually accountable.

Each chapter in his book expressed a 'voice' that spoke truth to realities that are not talked about enough in the Christian Community nor is the weight of these topics evenly distributed in the body of Christ; as it is sometimes an unspoken expectation of our leadership (Pastors) to address them instead of a collective initiative. Topics include racial and social inequality, sexual orientation, government policies, mental, physical and emotional health, community development and educational programs that make an impact for stronger economic growth.

"Finding My Lost Voice" is a testament of truth, love and wisdom one can benefit from if you are truly seeking God daily for insight of your purpose.

Finding My Lost Voice is a deeply challenging and beautifully redemptive read. It tackles sensitive political and racial topics with honesty and courage. At its heart, the book guides readers toward becoming positive contributors to a nation’s healing — through justice, restoration, and Christlike living.

What makes this book powerful is that it doesn’t leave the responsibility for change in the hands of politicians or systems alone. Instead, it invites each of us to become ambassadors of Christ — people who actively live out justice, mercy, and humility in our everyday relationships and communities.

The group discussion questions at the end of each section deepen the impact of the message, offering space for honest reflection and practical application.

At its core, the book echoes the call of Micah 6:8: to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. If taken to heart, its message holds the potential to heal deep wounds, restore dignity, and unite divided nations.

This is a call to action — to stand up for the voiceless and the oppressed, to be kind to all, and to walk humbly not only with God, but also with the people He places in our path. Like the Good Samaritan, like Nelson Mandela, and ultimately, like Jesus.

Finding My Lost Voice was a really interesting read. Basil spoke about many challenging topics. Some have made world headlines and some closer to home with life story examples that I had previously just glansed over in my own life and had not taken the time to think about, intentionally. This is what this book does. It makes you think about challenging life situations and the choices people make, more deeply. If you can think of 10 difficult topics on the world's news agenda, it is most likely in this book! There are many questions to be asked and answered and Basil gives you a perspective on both, mostly, because, as he stated in his book, he doesn't have all the answers because some decisions that have to be made, are heart wrenching, if you stand on what you believe about God and His will, not ours. You may or may not agree with some of his views or answers, but you will certainly feel challenged about the way you have been thinking about the various topics covered in his book.

This book is deeply needed in today's world. While many books are described that way, this one truly stands out because it boldly speaks against a dangerous trend in the church.

A significant portion of the church is yielding to societal pressure, accepting the false narrative that its time is over. The world insists that Christians—especially those who are white, male, older, or not poor—no longer have a voice worth hearing. Basil has done an excellent job addressing the many ways in which the world seeks to silence the vital voice of Jesus-followers.

Writing this book took courage, but the truth must be spoken. Rise up, Church. Defend the truth. Stand for real justice. Love mercy. Walk humbly. Make a difference. This book will encourage you and equip you with both biblical wisdom and practical guidance on how to do just that.

Finding My Lost Voice by Basil Sparks is an interesting perspective of a white heterosexual Christian man. I have to admit that the apartheid references to racism was something I personally had not lived. Being from the USA I lived a different reality. With that said the point was made that I probably did have advantages due to being a white man.
The other areas may have had more impact personally to me. the chapter on sexism and relating to my wife had excellent advice and will be implementing some of those to try and to improve my marriage. Other areas such as dealing with sexual orientation and being true to the biblical teachings is ok, but ensure that I act justly, with love and kindness and walk humbly with God.
Pastor Basil Sparks gives us some very good things to think on, especially in these last days where there is so much confusion and dissension within our societies.
