When the Paradise Falls bridge fell, Jennifer Katzenberg lost her husband and her happiness. The only thing she has left is her job as a high school teacher, but even that isn't safe. Eliot, her abusive brother-in-law, stalks her every waking moment waiting to pounce.

But then she meets him. Jacob, the new math teacher. He's quick witted, sensitive, and smart. But he's also built like an MMA fighter, drives a car worth ten times his salary, and is covered in scars. Something doesn't add up.

Jacob Kane skipped town when the bridge collapse claimed his family too. Everyone said it was an accident, but he isn't so sure.

Now he's back in Paradise Falls. Not to teach math, but to get revenge. Everything was going according to plan. At least until he saw her. Jennifer.

Jacob never thought he would see Jennifer again, but he discovers someone trying kidnap her--Elliot. One of the men he came here to kill. Falling in love was never part of the plan, but there's a new plan now: Fix it. Save her.

Okay, so just FYI, 'Book 1' really means 'part 1’ so, yup, this is a serial :( ...which if I'd paid more attention, I would've known as the author is nice enough to let us know this, right on the title page....sorta think it should've gone on the cover, or in the summary as I think those usually get more attention paid to them, but still, she did mention it.

But this means I won't be reading anymore, mostly because, I am really not a fan of these piece-meal stories, but also because, despite the pretty decent writing, the story itself, IMO wasn't terribly memorable, so by the time the next book comes out, I doubt I'd remember anything that happened in this one... it's like one those movies that takes place in those small towns where the cops are all crooked assholes, and in comes the hero to save the day! Not a bad story, just one I feel like I've read before ...so yeah, it's just not for me.

Remember though, just because I wasn't a fan, doesn't mean you won't be! The writing really wasn't bad, and the hero wasn't bad ( I wish there'd been more of his pov, though!) so If you don't mind the serial format, and (IMO) the somewhat familiar storyline, who knows? you might like this one, more than I did :)

I had a difficult time getting into the book, not sure why but I couldn't connect with the characters until I was half way through the book.

Jennifer's husband was killed in a Bridge collapse and she has been having a hard time moving on with her life since he passed three years earlier. I have to say she has the worst brother-in-law I have ever read about, this jerk (Elliot) has tried numerous times to rape her (before she married his brother and then again after he died) I don't know if he ever succeeded because in this book he has been stopped and her flashbacks never get that far, but I am sure we will know more about that in the other books in the series.
Jacob has returned to Paradise Falls, he left when his parents and younger sister were killed in the Bridge collapse and after completing school he joined the army, things aren't quite as he remembers but he does remember being a 17 year old senior and having a crush on the new English teacher Mrs. K (Jennifer). Jacob is very mysterious and there is a good reason for it.

Although I had a hard time connecting with the characters at first I found the second half of the book really grabbed me so I will be continuing with the series.

Great book!Jennifer was an aspiring gymnist that had to give up her dream due to an ankle injury. She is now a high school teacher in her home town of Paradise Falls. She has a stalker who just happens to be her deceased husband's brother. Elliot is the same man who tried to rape her while she was in high school and whom her late husband stopped before he could actually complete his violent crime. Jacob is a new math teacher at the high school and also grew up in Paradise Falls. Jennifer doesn't know it yet, but thoughts of her kept Jacob fighting for his life while he was being tortured by the group that captured him when he was wounded in the middle east. He has returned to Paradise Falls to investigate the bridge collapse that killed Jennifer's husband and his parents and younger sister. Jacob had his suspects, and after Jennifer is attacked in her home by Elliot's friend he takes her to his home. Jennifer isn't sure why he has returned and finally gets the reason out of him. Hints of corruption and greed.

The title fists the story so well because both main characters have Scar Tissue both physically and emotionally. Jennifer Katzenberg, high school English teacher lost her husband when the bridge collapsed five years earlier; Jacob Kane lost his whole family in the same accident.

Now five years later Jennifer is still being bothered by her brother-in-law when he causes her to crash on her bike and is pulling her by her hair into his car, Jacob and the school safety officer comes to her rescue. From this point on the story is action filled with her brother-in-law continuing to bother her and Jacob takes it upon himself to help her.

Jacob has a lot of secrets and is working to find out what really caused the bridge to collapse, while he works as a math teacher at the high school and restores the local mansion that used to belong to Jennifer's family.

I look forward to how the series continues and find out if these two people with so much Scar Tissue can work together to help each other heal.

I was gifted this book by the Author for an honest review.

This book tells a story, but is it really a story, or a reality of life.

Jennifer is a victim of her brother in laws abuse from a very young age and now that she is his deceased brothers widow, even more so.

Jacob has had a crush on the beautiful teacher for years and now that he is a man, he comes charging to her rescue.

There are a lot of strange things going on in Paradise Falls and Jacob is determined to rid the town of them and now Jennifer is done with all the fear and abuse that she has suffered and joins forces with Jacob. Jacob has finally opened her eyes to the fact her that her in laws are behind all the strangeness.

A lot of power hungry officials and evil in Paradise Falls, can't wait to find out what will happen.

Jennifer Katzenberg was living in the past. It is hard giving over something so target. A bridge collapsing and causing her husband’s death. She love him so much he was her strength and her protector. Now that he was gone who would protect her from the god awful Elliot Katzenberg, her brother-in-law. God how I hated Elliot and Grayson in this book.

I loved this mystery man that Jennifer met, Jacob Kane. Doesn’t the name alone sound yummy. He was in town for revenge. Like Jennifer he lost someone in the collapsing of the bridge. Well more then one person. He lost his family, His mom, dad, and sister. Now it was time to get revenge for their death, their murder. The problem is he wasn’t expecting to see Jennifer. He had hope she was gone and had moved on, but now that she was here would love have a chance to blossom? Can Jennifer look over the scars that cover Jacob’s body.

JACOB & JENNIFER ARE TRULY TWO VERY, VERY SCARRED PEOPLE BOTH MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY. THEY ARE SUCH SAD INDIVIDUALS YOU CAN ACTUALLY FEEL THE SADNESS LEAPING FROM THE STORY. THIS IS A SERIES OF FOUR BOOKS WHICH CLIFF HANG YOU AI THE END YOU NEED TO HAVE ALL FOUR TO GET ANY SATISFACTION. I REFUSED TO EVEN BEGIN READING UNTIL I HAD ALL OF THE BOOKS ON MY KINDLE CAROUSAL (hate hanging from a cliff). BK#1 REALLY SETS UP THE WHO-WHAT-WHY OF THE PLAYERS SO FAR I HAVE ONE BURNING QUESTION (makes me laugh every time I think of it) WHAT'S-UP-WITH-ALL-THE-BATMAN-STUFF? I CAN'T WAIT TO FIND OUT JUST HOW THEY WILL GET JUSTICE WITH ALL THE EVIL DOERS THEY KEEP COMING UP AGAINST. HOLY-COW ON TO BK#2-POW-KICK-WHAM!!! ;D

This was a pretty quick read. I did not know this was a series. But I will read the next. I liked the hero and I do like the story. The issues I had are with the h. I have never been in that traumatic of a situation in my life but the choices the h makes are hard to believe. I am clueless to why she remained in that town. After everything that happened to her but she was too stubborn to leave. Even when it's obvious her sister is afraid of her tormentor she still refuses to leave. I could say maybe she wanted to die but she knows death would never come if her tormentor got his hands on her. I am having a real problem understanding her staying. But I loved the whole teacher/ex student. It was a nice change.

Grumpy

I always hate it when author's do this , spread the story over 4-5 books. I like the series books, the story for different characters from the first book. I will purchase the other books then ,but not now . When the first storylines aren't even finished and leave you hanging until you buy the next one. I have a very low opinion of a author that does this. I give this 1 star because Jennifer's story would have been good if it had finished. But I will never read it . Because who knows how many books it will take.

A good start to a series

I enjoyed this book. Jennifer is a teacher who lost her husband in a terrible bridge collapse. She is tormented by his brother, a Senator's son, and his friends. Enter Jacob, a former POW, who lost his entire family in the same accident. The sparks fly when they meet and keep flying. Will he be able to pull her from her lonely, grieving existence? Can't wait to read the next installment.

Decent story

I knew going into this that it was a cliffhanger/serial situation, so I waited until all parts came out to read it. The book was decent. A lot of interesting things happened, and I am really curious to see how thongs play out. The book seemed a little disjointed and a bit confusing at times. But by the end I had figured everything that was going on. The story is decent but I'll have to reserve judgement until I read more.

Great book

I can't wait for book 2. The story line in this book was different and very enjoyable. Love the mysterious characters. It has a little of everything in it, romance, mystery, suspense. Just a great read.

Cliff hanger

This is a good beginning but the questions are brought forth but you are left with not much being resolved new beginnings but no endings. But a interesting start for another book.

I liked the first book in this series. It ends with a cliffhanger, so I continued reading the series. Each book got cheesier than the previous one. I lost interest by the third book. I later read that the author modeled it after a soap opera. Wish I had known that before I read it.

Ugh just reading and reading along and then the book is over I didn't even realize it would leave me hanging like that. Aside from stopping mid story in my opinion, very addicting looking forward to getting the other books in this series

I'm torn. I really liked the story, but was left with the feeling that absolutely nothing is resolved. Guess I'll have to keep reading the series.

I couldn't put it down. It is sad and emotional because of the abuse and such mentioned in the book, but it is still a good book. Note: It does end with a cliff hanger
