WHY WRITE A BOOK ON PORNOGRAPHY ADDICTION FOR CATHOLICS? The answer is simple. There’s a great need for one!
Pornography is no longer just a men’s issue. Dr. Peter Kleponis presents an alarming in-depth look at the pornography epidemic that is ruining lives, marriages, families, and careers—and hindering life-giving relationships with God. Read the stories of real people—men, women, clergy, seminarians, and teens—who’ve suffered from addictions to pornography and went on to find healing. Freedom is possible. Integrity can be restored.
"The most comprehensive work I have read on one of the most pressing problems in the world—and in the Church—today. With wisdom and grace, Dr. Kleponis gives insight and real life answers to deal with today’s elephant in the room." —Gus Lloyd Host of “Seize the Day” on Sirius XM’s The Catholic Channel
"A sound pastoral perspective which makes his book a “must” in the library of not only individuals looking for personal guidance in this area of behavior, but also for every Catholic leader responsible for the formative development of others." —Reverend Joseph M. Mele, PhD, Secretary for Leadership Development and Director for Post-Ordination Formation in the Diocese of Pittsburgh

With many thanks and much appreciation to Emmaus Road Publishing for the ARC of "Integrity Restored: Helping Catholic Families Win the Battle Against Pornography" authored by Dr. Peter C. Kleponis PhD for the purpose of this review.
The problem of Pornography has reached epidemic proportions in the US according to sociological research, the effects on society and family life are challenging, as those affected face the consequences of sexual addiction. Dr. Kleponis discusses pornography in two parts of this informative and spiritually engaging book: 1.) Understanding the Problem of Pornography and 2.) Addressing the Problem of Pornography. According to (Family Safe Media 2010) statistics there are 4.2 million pornographic websites, 100,000 child porn websites world wide. 72% are men who visit these websites, 28% women. Christians admitting to porn being a problem in the home 47%. 83% of males were addicted to pornography and 28% females.
The evolution of Porn began in the 1940's with the "Pin-Up Girls" Americans became accustomed to viewing women in bikinis, were prior to that this would have been scandalous. In the 1950's Playboy Magazine was introduced with topless and nude photos, this ushered in the 1960's sexual revolution of the pill and "free love". The 1970's brought cable television, X rated movies to late night TV. The 1980's Americans were able to privately view video cassettes at home rented from sleazy porn shops, though obscenity laws were introduced in communities keeping minors out, these materials became an accepted part of American culture. The 1990's introduced DVD's pornographers realized a bonanza of profits as porn became available 24/7. With the 2000's-2010 and the introduction of the internet, all forms of chat/video sites, prostitution and hook-up sites, leads to extremely dangerous forms of sexual services, behaviors, acting out. The first part of the book was especially fascinating as the history of pornography was presented and infiltrated American culture.
Dr. Kleponis further explains how tragic/harmful porn is for women and children in particular, often leading to family break down and divorce. The rise of narcissism that encourages a sense of entitlement, and changing societal attitudes that foster sexually addictive behaviors. Personal stories are highlighted and the role of Catholic spirituality and the church in therapy and recovery. Priests, Religious, and Seminarians addicted to pornography are also completely addressed. This is a good well written, helpful, and valuable resource written (of course)for those of the Catholic faith, though its basic principles apply universally.
Dr. Peter Kleponis is featured on TV and radio programming educating people on pornography. He is a licensed clinical therapist and the assistant director of Comprehensive Counseling Services, and resides in Phoenixville, PA with his wife and family.
This book is so very well researched and encompasses every possible part of addiction to porn and recovery. I have used it in my research and interviewed Peter along with other psychotherapists. He is very down-to-earth and realistic but also strong in his values and belief that people can overcome their addictions. He has many years of experience. His reason for getting into this field came about because it was such a recurring problem among married couples coming to him for counseling. He trained with the best and is now writing a Catholic recovery program. This book is one of the best out there.
An excellent resource for people who suffer from sexual addiction and for the people who love them. Written from an explicitly Catholic point of view but contains much that will be helpful to anyone who is addicted to porn/sex. The primary audience is addicted men but there is a lot here that will be helpful to addicts generally and likewise for spouses of addicts.
