Cherish

Rate this book
Fans of Covet by New York Times bestselling author Tracey Garvis Graves will be delighted by this novella-length sequel.

When Daniel Rush wakes up in the hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the head, the last person he expects to see at his bedside is his ex-wife Jessica. Their marriage disintegrated after the death of their infant son Gabriel, and Daniel gave Jessie what he thought she wanted: the freedom to start over with someone else. But Daniel never updated his emergency contact information, and Jessie is the one who receives the call with the devastating news.

Daniel was Jessie’s one true love. Together since college, Jessie had dreams of raising a family with Daniel, and growing old together. When Gabriel died, Jessie buried those dreams with her beloved son and shut everyone out, including Daniel.

Daniel faces months of grueling rehabilitation and he’s going to need some help. Jessie is the last person anyone expects to volunteer, but this is her one chance to make amends, giving her and Daniel a shot at getting things right this time.

The road to recovery will be long and arduous. But with Jessie leading the way, Daniel just might be able to get his old life back.

Daniel knows how to covet. But can Jessie help him remember how to cherish?

Swoon Worthy Detective, Daniel Rush from “Covet” gets his own story and it's a doozy!

At the tail end of “Covet” Detective Daniel Rush was shot and readers are left wondering what happened to him. To say that gave me heart palpitations is an understatement!

When Daniel is brought into the ER, Jessie Rush, Daniel’s ex-wife is there, as she is still his emergency contact. Days go by with no change from Daniel and then finally, he awakens from the coma. The road will be a long one but he’ll have Jessie by his side.

Love has always existed between these two. Torn apart by tragedy, brought together by tragedy, in “Cherish” - Daniel and Jessie find their way back to each other.

An endearing novella that gave me exactly what I wanted, an ending to this story.

Wow...well, really all you need to do is read the blurb and that's the story in a hand basket. Daniel gets hurt in the line of duty and Jessie is the one they contact. She realizes she wants to be there for Daniel. Now, she just has to wait and see if he wants her to stay.

I LOVED Daniel in Covet and while I didn't want anything to happen to Claire's marriage, I was really disappointed that nothing happened for Daniel. He was left high and dry and so I was thrilled when TGG wrote this novella.

It was interesting how things played out for Daniel and Jessie. It was hard not to pull for Daniel when he was going through rehab. I can't even imagine how hard that must be.

description

My favorite part was later. Reading about how Jessie came full circle and made peace with things was really sweet. And of course, Daniel is just as amazing.

I can't tell you about any steaminess because that would be a spoiler but I think you will be happy with the way things play out.

Loved the ending!! I just wish that when they saw a certain someone that they could've talked.

I believe that this novella was necessary because I felt like Covet was slightly unfair when it comes to Daniel. Don't get me wrong. I didn't want him between the couple of Claire & Chris and in no way I wanted him to break them up. I had really enjoyed his character though. He was the fun, good looking cop, always there for Claire who was really lonely. A supportive friend who treated Claire with respect But I needed more and Cherish gives you that.

This story starts with Daniel at the hospital, when he got shot on his head during a routine traffic stop. We had seen that part on the Covet from Claire's POV and now we see this from his & Jessie's, his ex wife who was listed as an emergency call and ran on his side when the cops informed her about his situation.

“I lost my son, I lost my wife, I got shot in the head. I think I’m entitled to a depressive episode.”

In the Covet, Daniel told us that they broke up when they lost their baby, Gabriel due to SIDS. Jessie had been too deep in depression and they drifted apart in the point where they took a divorce.

The doctors inform the family that his injury will have a couple of effects, such as loss of short term memory, weakness of his body etc. The situation becomes reversed and Josh is the one who feels depressive now. With these problems in the middle is it possible that their love will get a second chance?

“I may occasionally struggle to identify the color blue or what a lemon smells like, but it will take more than a bullet to the head to make me forget meeting the girl who would become the great love of my life.”

PS: I really loved the epilogue. I think it was a perfect closure & a full circle for Daniel

A beautiful novella, I liked 'Covet' but I loved this more, getting to see Daniel's side of the story and what happened after he was shot and recovering.

It was also wonderful to meet Jess, she was a good match for Daniel and a delightful person.

More of their past history gets explored here.. it's heartbreaking and I was constantly giving them hugs in my head.

I thought Miss Graves handled everything perfectly, there was a thread of hope throughout everything.

I admired Jess for sticking with Daniel and Daniel for not giving up on his own recovery.

The ending made me smile and glad for them both:).

Would recommend.

Boy, this author knows how to write a great adult romance. This felt like closure! I feel satisfied like I just ate dessert after my meal!

Daniel Rush was the officer from book 1 who formed a friendship with married woman Claire until he was shot in the head during a traffic stop. We knew Daniel was still grieving and trying to find his way after his divorce from his wife Jessica. This shooting began a journey of healing for Daniel physically and emotionally. It was well paced, not too sweet and just honest.

Tracey Garvis Graves is definitely going on my autobuy list.

CONTENT WARNING: Grief after infant death.

Non-ranting part of the review first. Cherish has a HEA, so romance fans can read the novella without fear. And though I haven't yet read Covet, I wasn't lost at all here, and was really enjoying in the story.

WAS, past tense. Certain scenes probably won't bother other readers but rather annoyed me.

Jessie goes out for a night at a restaurant with her sister and best friend. Daniel tries to police what she wears, says men will stare at her chest, and convinces her to bring a cardigan. Supposedly because it's "chilly" - or just trying to get her to cover her chest. Way to perpetuate rape culture, Daniel.

Anyway, the three women drink four bottles of wine between them, and travel via taxi safely home. All good. Then Jessie comes home to Daniel - and she can't stand without wobbling, and can't undress herself, so Daniel has to do it for her. That's not my issue. But Daniel finds Jessie's behaviour while thoroughly intoxicated "cute" and "endearing".

The author likely didn't mean to romanticise binge-drinking; she just needed a scene wherein Daniel realises he wants to shag Jessie again. (He doesn't do it until later, when she's sober and can non-dubiously consent.) I get that. But having grown up with an alcoholic..."cute" and "endearing" definitely do not come to mind to describe their behaviour. Alcoholism is a disease, and it's not funny.

People will defend the scene by claiming that Jessie isn't an alcoholic, so lighten the hell up, Tez; don't take your issues out on the book. (I'm not - I rate Cherish three stars, which means "it's OK".) But from then on, I couldn't appreciate the novella as much.

It doesn't help that the epilogue is... Look, epilogues are unnecessary. They're usually cheesier than the rest of the book, and while that's fine for other readers I can't enjoy it. Daniel and Jessie have remarried; they have a child who's alive, and Daniel's completely recovered from his traumatic brain injury with no permanent damage. He does have PTSD, though, so he quits being a traffic cop. Luckily for him, he gets to become a crime scene investigator instead. Even with his criminology degree, it seems strange to jump from traffic cop to CSI in one move. It's like a super-promotion, because dealing with the public is probably the worst job in the police biz.

And yes, people with traumatic brain injuries deserve to fully recover, and get remarried, and have another kid, and get a super-promotion. I just wonder how the story would've differed if Daniel did have permanent brain damage, and if they didn't have another baby.

But I'm probably in the minority when it comes to my views on this novella, so thanks for letting me rant.

3.5/5

This was really sweet, although the lack of Claire was a bit disappointing. I mean, it makes sense, but it seems unrealistic for two people who spent every available moment together suddenly have nothing to do with each other. Most people are not that strong willed. I understand that given the circumstances of his accident, Daniel was less affected by the loss of that relationship, but I feel like in reality, certain things would have brought up memories of Claire and he wouldn't have just felt neutral about it, especially since he spent so much time with Claire at his house and was confined to his place after he left the rehab centre. It really didn't go into any depth at all about how he felt about Claire once his memory returned. It was sort of like he used Claire to replace Jessie, and then replaced Claire WITH Jessie, which is sort of weird if you think about it. As both found love with their original spouses, one would think that they could maybe have had a bit of casual contact, besides making eye contact at community events. I guess that would have been difficult for Jessie and Chris, though. I love Tracey Garvis-Graves' characters and writing so much. I absolutely devour her books. I just felt like there was too much there between Claire and Daniel to end as abruptly as it did, even if it was for the best. I was happy that both of them had a happy ending, though. Typically, it's a bit nauseating to have everything wrapped up in a tight little bow but in this case it felt deserved. Daniel had been through enough. The author also managed to make Jessie a girl you would root for, when she set up the last book so you would root for Claire. That takes talent. It didn't feel like I was being manipulated to root for one over the other. It just all made sense and flowed in a natural way. Anyone who is looking for a book that you can't put down until you finish should definitely pick up anything by Tracey Garvis-Graives. I'm excited for her to write more.

Look. I loved Daniel in Covet. He was a good man who fell in love with a woman who, ultimately, would never be his. Nor should she have been. Claire was still in love with her husband, but needed someone desperately. Daniel definitely had unresolved issues with his former wife Jessie. As soon as I finished Covet, i asked Tracey Garvis-Graves to give Daniel and Jessie their story. It goes without saying, I'm beyond thrilled she gave us Cherish.

This is a second chance love story, between two people who should've never been apart. Daniel and Jessie went through every parents worst nightmare, and like many, didn't make it through intact. But the love was always there. When Daniel needs Jess the most, she has the chance to begin to make things right. She's stronger now, ready. And she helps Daniel through the fight of his life. This story was just as emotional as I hoped it would be, and I'll cop to doing the Ugly Cry at 2am.

In Cherish, TGG gives us another insightful, thoughtful, beautiful story that celebrates the power of love.

Extremely disappointing. I highly recommend the story before this one, entitled Covet: it's exquisitely written--complicated, emotional, realistic, thoughtful.

This one reads like a brochure for grief recovery, for depression, for brain injuries. Ugh. It was tolerable, though, until I got to the whole reunion cliche of "ex-husband wasn't celibate, but ex-wife was," which MAKES ME CRAZY MAD. I was all, ugh, NO. Fcukin' NO. Skim read the rest (it was only about twenty more pages), gagged and then asked the universe for more Garvis-Graves novels like Cherish and On The Island and less like this one, Kate and Ian, and Every Time I Think of You.

Daniel got his happy ending after all. I liked it. I loved that we saw Daniel after the end of Covet in this short story. I leave these characters with a smile on my face.

Short and simple, but just enough to give you all the “happily ever after” feels!

In “Cherish”, we get to know Jessie, Daniel’s ex, and see their relationship after Daniel’s work related accident. Their history is quiet rocky but both want to overcome the ghosts of their life before. Can they find this new HEA?

The sweetest part of this novella is the end when an old friend makes a quick appearance.

A couple of weeks ago, I was looking through my TBR and Covet by TGG caught my attention.  I had been putting off reading for a while and I guess I felt like the time was right to read it.  Long story short, I really enjoyed that book.  It completely pulled me in and ate my brain.  After I finished it, I was talking with a blogger friend who also reads TGG and I was gushing about it and then....poof! I was offered a review copy of Cherish by the author.  Being that I had just finished Covet and I was jonesing for the conclusion to Daniel's story, I accepted the gracious offer.

My thoughts about Covet via Goodreads:
I started this one late last night and got about 20% in and went to sleep. Today, I finished it. I procrastinated and just let myself disappear into this book. Ms. Garvis-Graves always manages to pull me into her books by my throat. :)
This one has been on my Kindle for quite awhile and I wanted to read it before the next book in the series comes out 10/28. Mission accomplished!
ETA:
Hours later, this book is still sitting with me. TGG's books always tend to stay with me afterwards and "stew" in my brain. You have to be a patient reader of TGG's books and understand that she is going to take you on a bit of a journey. I think we've become a bit ADD with our books and don't have as much patience for anything over 60k words. TGG needs you to be patient.

Enter Cherish, a follow up novella to Covet.  I'm really glad Ms. Graves wrote this novella, it was an excellent bookend to Covet.  I really don't want to give too much away, so I'm going to be careful with what I say here.  I thoroughly enjoyed Cherish, I'm so glad that Ms. Graves decided to give Daniel and Jessie a fulfilling story and closure. :)

I will say that if you haven't read Covet or have been waiting, now is the time to read it.  I think having Cherish to slide right into is the best way to go, because you'll want to read Daniel's story as soon as you finish Covet!

(e-book $2.99 via Amazon Kindle)

I read this one in one sitting and I loved it.

I love the reuniting trope. I love Jessie and how she stayed by Daniel's side. I didn't like Daniel in Covet because I rooted for Claire and Chris to fix their relationship and I was uncomfortable with the whole emotional cheating thing.

I liked Daniel in this one. I did thought he dismissed his whole relationship with Claire a little too easily on his part after everything that happened in Covet, but, hey, it's a novella so I wasn't expecting things to go too in-depth. I wish it was longer but only so I could spend more time with the characters.

Now, if Ms. Garvis-Graves would write a Claire and Chris story after Covet and how they worked out their relationship, that'd be so fantastic. I just don't want to say good bye to these characters yet.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I never knew how much I wanted this story until I found out that Tracey Garvis-Graves was writing it. Then I couldn't wait to get my hands on it! If you enjoyed Covet then you need to read this. I must insist on proper book order. :)

I can't write a full review since I was one of her beta readers and there may be some bias.

I’m an absolute avid fan of Tracey Garvis-Graves since falling in love with her novel On the Island. Her subsequent book Covet was just as emotional and captivating, which is also where we meet Daniel Rush who is the protagonist for Cherish.

I’m so glad TGG decided to give Daniel his own time in the spotlight. I truly fell for him in the first book and it saddened me that the first installment never brought closure to his story. In Cherish, we meet up with him again when he’s involved in a tragic police confrontation that leaves him in a coma and later having to face months and months of rehabilitation. As a result of not updating his emergency contacts, Jessie, his ex-wife, is called to his side and once she sees Daniel’s condition, she decides to stay for better or for worse.

I loved the coming together of these two characters! Second chance novels are always rewarding when the two protagonists clearly exhibit character growth and work toward a better ending. Daniel and Jessie achieved this in spades. After witnessing what they went through during their marriage and how much they’ve had to overcome, a better ending was surely deserved.

Cherish pulled me in from the first page and kept me glued to Daniel and Jessie’s story till the very end. Both characters are worthy of applause and I can’t wait to see what TGG has in store for us next. Loved it!

More of Daniel to Cherish!

After having read Covet, there was no doubt that I wanted and needed more of Daniel Rush’s story.

As you can tell from my rating that I LOVED Cherish! I loved that this was a second chance story for two people whose lives were ripped apart in the past when they experienced something so tragic. The process of recovery from his gunshot wound to the head is long and painful, but for Daniel having his ex by his side could very well be a blessing in disguise.

I liked Jessie! In the beginning she’s introduced at such a tense moment. Tracey Garvis-Graves writes her as a character with so much compassion. I loved how Jessie understands what Daniel needs, especially his emotional needs. In a way his recovery was therapeutic for her as well, and I appreciated that aspect of the story so much. I thought all the special moments for them were tender and well written.

I’m so glad Ms. Garvis-Graves continued their story. Although short and sweet, this novella was still fulfilling for me. If you were a fan of Daniel in Covet, you will definitely be a bigger fan of his after reading Cherish.

After finishing Covet I was looking forward to reading Cherish, Claire had her ending, but what about Daniel Rush I had a big soft spot for him I needed to know what was going to happen to him.

Daniel & Jessie story was both heartwarming and heartbreaking, and my heart went out to them. Tracey took me on an emotional rollercoaster while reading this book. Chapters 23 & 24 were so emotional they had me reaching some tissues it was if I was grieving along with Daniel and Jessie.

Cherish is a beautifully written novella about love, forgiveness, redemption, acceptance, healing, hope, and self-discovery. Daniel and Jessie needed to face the past, remember the good times, let go of the guilt no matter how hard it may be to find their way back to each other and have the happiness they both deserved.

‘That’s the thing about hindsight. You can learn from it, but it can’t help you when you need it the most”

If you have read Covet and loved Daniel, then you must read Cherish Tracey has written a novella that will stay with you long after you've read the last page.

Read it in a few hours, not that I'm surprised. This follows Daniel story, who we got to meet in Covet, another Tracey Garvis Graves great book.

The ones that did not fall for Daniel in Covet will do it with this book, if such a female exists. My only complain is that it was too short, this could have been, should have been a full book.

Novella sequel to Covet. Cherish is about a second chance romance. Daniel, a police officer awakens in the hospital from a gunshot wound to see his ex-wife Jessie beside him. Daniel and Jess, their marriage ended due to the pain of losing their son from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Now with Daniel facing rehabilitation, Jess wants to be there for him. Can they rekindle their relationship?

A few quotes that I liked from the book:

“You can’t love someone for as long as I loved you and not be hurt when you learn they’ve given that love to someone else.”

“All the things we’ll have to conquer seem so daunting, and none of them will be easy. But I remind myself that the things that are worth fighting for rarely are.”
