Laurie Anderson's first book and signed by her. Laurie Anderson was born in Chicago in 1947. One of eight children. She studied the violin while growing up. Played in the Chicago Youth Symphony. She graduated in 1969 from Bernard College in New york City, and went on to study at Columbia University, working towards a degree in sculpture. The art scene of the early 1970's fostered an experimental attitude among many young artists in downtown N.Y.C that attracted Anderson, and some of her earliest performances as a young artist took place on the street or in informal art spaces. In the most memorable of these, she stood on a block of ice playing her violin while wearing her ice skates. When the ice melted,The performance ended. I mention all of this because I believe Ms. Anderson is a natural resource in New York City. One of our greatest talents. No wonder her steady companion was Lou Reed. This being her first book. Previous owners inscription. Very small lettering and nice handwriting. It is price clipped. Other wise a fine copy. Rare.
No words—just delightfully detailed little line drawings in which you follow a mysterious parcel on its bizarre journey. I’m a longtime fan of Laurie Anderson’s performance art but I think anyone would enjoy this clever and visually compelling little children’s book that she published long before her fame, as a college student in need of money.
