Now That We Don't Talk

Rate this book
Time has a way of rewriting fate—sometimes, the people you least expect become the ones you can’t live without.

Vivian

Life is good. I have great friends, a supportive family, and a job I love. Sure, there are ups and downs, but nothing could have prepared me for the return of Mac Evans—the one man who has always gotten under my skin. We’ve never been friends, just two people tolerating each other because of mutual connections. I haven’t spoken to him since overhearing a conversation I wish I could forget.

I would never fall for a professional athlete. Mac isn’t my type, and I’m definitely not his. Or at least, that’s what I’ve always believed. But now he’s back, and everything feels different. Seeing him again has thrown me completely off balance, but I keep reminding myself he won’t be here for long, and he’ll be out of my life for good.

Mac
Hockey is everything to me, but even star goalies like Mac Evans need a break. My off-season plan was simple-- relax in the Windy City, catch up with family and my best friend, and binge-watch shows I’d missed.

I didn’t expect to run into Vivian Lewis. We were acquaintances at best—connected only by the people we cared about. She never liked me, and I wasn’t her biggest fan either. But seeing her now? Time changes everything.

Vivian is different. She doesn’t care about my career or the spotlight. She’s real, grounded, and unimpressed by what usually turns heads. Now, I’m wondering if I can win her over—or at least get her to talk to me. Is it even possible?

Vivian and Mac are very different and only tolerate each other because their respective best friends are twins, which means they have to socialize from time to time. Mac is a hockey goalie for a team based in Tennessee so he's mostly on the road, but this summer he will be home in Chicago. Katie and Kyle, their friends, demand that they all can hang out together, so Vivian and Mac make an effort to get along. What neither of them expected was how much they would actually like each others company.

Vivian works in finance, loves maths and has never watched a hockey game. I can not relate to her, but she's still easy to like. Mac has a big ego, but it's clear that he loves hockey and he always takes time with the fans. I wouldn't say this is an enemies-to-lovers, more like a frenemies-to-lovers. I love that we get dual POV's, so we know what they really think of each other - and when it starts to change. I also love how Mac talks about his feelings with both his parents and Kyle, and he even asks his teammates for advice. It's not so common for men to talk about their feelings in such a natural way, so that was nice to see.

As I've also read the author's "Love in Overtime" it was fun to see Blair and Cooper again in a couple of scenes. The only thing I could remark upon is that Vivian "rolled her eyes" a bit to often. When it becomes a source of irritation it's a sign that it's used too frequently. Otherwise "Now That We Don't Talk" has everything I expect and want in a romcom!

Love a good clean rom com? This is it. Another hit in the Tennessee Wolves hockey saga. Although this story takes place in the off season so the focus is more on life long relationships versus hockey. Quick, sweet read. 🩷

This was such a compelling story! I didn’t want to set it down!

These two were a true enemies to more situation, with Vivian having a deeper dislike for Mac than he did for her. Growing up they tolerated each other since their best friends were twins. Mac previously never noticed Vivian in any way other than to be a bit annoyed with her. Vivian was truly set against Mac even more in recent years after overhearing something that he said about her to some friends while at a party. Yet, agreeing to a truce for the sake of their besties while Mac was back in town for a few months ended up being a real game changer.

I loved the way these two began to be drawn to each other. It was a bit hilarious to read Vivian’s thoughts about Mac as she tried to resist his friendliness. Seeing him fall first was very sweet.

Although these two had a rocky background and seemed like opposites, they ended up connecting and growing close in the sweetest way. My heart hurt for both of them and especially Mac as they dealt with their friends’ opinions of the match that most people didn’t see coming. I loved this book from start to finish and hope that we will see more of these characters in the future.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Time can make such a difference to some of our relationships. And Mac and Vivian find this especially true in this story, when Mac returns to his home town. And although Vivian and Mac and best friend with twins (Katie and Kyle), they've never really gotten along. And yet, they find themselves drawn to each other as they spend time together.

But, will the many complexities of their lives, including distance, be a barrier that cannot be overcome, or can they find a way to make their happily ever after?

I loved the vibes between Vivi and Mac. And I loved the efforts Mac went to to really get to know Vivian, and to actually show that he was invested in their friendship/relationship.

Overall, a truly fun read with a fabulous HEA! I loved how we saw more of Mac's Hockey Team as well. I'm looking forward to more of their stories as well. :D

I had so much fun watching another one of the author’s hockey players find his forever. Mac was an unexpected blend of cocky and vulnerable that worked to steal my heart. Vivian was everything I look for in my dream heroines: a little bit snarky, smart as a whip and okay if everyone in the room knows it, or not. I loved that she had a career in finance; it was so different than everything else out there and perfect for her. I enjoyed how this story kind of played with the idea of forced proximity. The two of them weren’t ever actually confined together, but they were made to spend time together that they would have avoided if they could have. And watching them shake loose all the preconceived notions about each other and what the other thought, was so worthwhile. I adored the ending, and I wish the book weren’t over already. I just want to hug this pair tight to my heart and never let them go.

Melissa Baldwin delivers a fun and engaging enemies-to-lovers romance in Now That We Don’t Talk. Mac and Vivi’s fiery dynamic keeps the pages turning as they go from rivals to realising their undeniable chemistry. Their banter is sharp, their tension is electric, and watching them finally acknowledge their feelings is incredibly satisfying.

The story is packed with humour, heart, and plenty of swoon-worthy moments. However, the ending felt a bit abrupt—I would have loved a little more closure or an extended resolution. Still, it’s a fantastic read that’s both entertaining and full of charm. If you love a good enemies-to-lovers romance with great chemistry, this one is worth picking up! 💕

The book was a real caress to the soul. If you are looking for a story that will warm you up and make you laugh at the same time, this is it. If you are looking for a story where friends will support you and stand by you no matter what, then you will find it here. If you are looking for a love story that overcomes obstacles and the past, then you don't have to look any further. A funny, romantic story of two people who live different lives and, apart from mutual friends, have almost nothing in common. On the one hand, there is Vivien, an intelligent woman who lives a happy, structured life and the last thing she wants is to meet her "enemy" Mac. Mac, on the other hand, is a relaxed, charismatic, slightly arrogant, but very successful hockey player. After a long time, he decides to spend his time off with his parents, in his hometown. And this is where Mac and Vivien's paths cross. The result is funny situations and teasing that gradually, although it seems against their will, bring them closer. But can these two put their past behind them?

"Now That We Don’t Talk" is a delightful sports romance that seamlessly blends enemies-to-lovers with the charm of witty banter and the sweet discovery of unexpected connections. Vivian and Mac’s story is both heartwarming and captivating, drawing readers into a world where time has a way of rewriting fate, and the most unlikely people become the ones you can't imagine living without.

Vivian, with her grounded, no-nonsense attitude, is the perfect counterbalance to Mac Evans, a professional hockey goalie who’s used to being in the spotlight. Their history is marked by tension and mutual disdain, but fate has other plans. When Mac unexpectedly returns to Chicago for the off-season, he runs into Vivian, who’s changed since their last encounter. Gone is the woman who barely tolerated him—this Vivian is strong, real, and completely unimpressed by his fame.

The dynamic between these two is electric, full of fiery moments, sarcastic exchanges, and slow-burn tension. Mac’s genuine interest in getting to know Vivian beyond the surface adds depth to their connection, and his efforts to win her over are both endearing and funny. The transformation from enemies to lovers feels earned, as both characters grow and open up in ways they never expected.

The secondary characters—Vivian’s supportive family and friends, and Mac’s loyal teammates—bring an added layer of warmth to the narrative, highlighting themes of found family and the importance of strong friendships. With its mix of humor, heart, and steamy chemistry, "Now That We Don’t Talk" is the perfect rom-com for anyone who enjoys sports romance with a twist.
Ultimately, "Now That We Don’t Talk" is a refreshing, feel-good read that proves sometimes the person you least expect becomes the one you need most. Highly recommended for fans of sports romance and enemies-to-lovers tropes.

Oh how I love the bluster and arrogance of professional athletes, or at least that's what Vivian Lewis thinks. When Mac Evans returns to town, she is not sure whether he will fit through the door because his head is so swollen. Everyone knows the professional hockey goalie. On the other hand, Vivian not only does not like hockey, but she surely has no use for Mac.

Mac is happy to return to his hometown for a break after his season ends. He has known Vivian all of his life as their best friends are twins. When she gives him the cold shoulder and then some, he is baffled as to why she is being so snarky to him. There is a story there, you will just to have to wait and see.

This was such a fun book to read. Vivian is highly intelligent and very opinionated. She does not mind sharing her views, and she is thoroughly unimpressed with anyone famous, especially hockey players. I loved her approach with Mac. The man, whom everyone swooned over, could not quite figure her out, but her approach to him made her more attractive to him. Mac was actually quite the sweetheart. Vivian had a jaded view of him. Their whip sharp banter and arguing was a highlight of many of their friend outings as their friends watched them bite back and forth. It did not take me long to figure out that they were more alike than they realized. You just had to get past the high walls that Vivian had erected around her heart. Who says enemies can't turn to lovers? The entire cast of characters are genuine and easy to like. This one was worth every minute I used to read it, especially if you enjoy fun, clean romantic comedy.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

OMG HOW CUTE 🥺

honestly this is a very sweet, fun and beautiful romcom, with a good balance of romance and comedy.

Mac new book boyfriend 1000% he's sooo sweet.

The couple is so adorable and funny.

Btw, have I mentioned I love Mac? Okay, I love him.

This is a good sports romance in case you like that, has some cozy vibes too and the characters are so likable. It's so well written, seriously, Melissa is a great author.

I received an ARC and I don't read ARCs anymore but I love Melissa's books and I'm so thankful this is my 3rd ARC from her. Hopefully I'll be able to read more of her.

Some quotes I loved:

💕Vivian smiles. “To think we spent years avoiding each other and bickering.”

💕Can I tell you a secret?” She lifts a brow. “Sure. I don’t think anything could surprise me anymore.” Leaning in, I lower my voice. “I enjoy bickering with you.” She leans back slightly, studying me. “Really?” “Really.”

💕 "There is absolutely nothing wrong with you,” she insists, her voice gentle yet firm. “Sometimes, life takes us down unexpected paths, ones we don’t always understand in the moment. Maybe you and Vivian were meant to go in separate directions for a while—not because either of you did anything wrong but because you needed time to grow, to learn, to experience things on your own. Life has an interesting way of teaching us lessons, even when we don’t realize we need them. Maybe this journey apart was necessary for you to find your way to each other—stronger and wiser. The best partners truly appreciate and understand each other—and in the end it’s about the timing"

What a brilliant book this is, not only is it funny but is also covers the meaning of true friendship. Vivian still lives in her hometown and still has a lot of her childhood friend group. But she wouldn't change anything other than maybe her love life which she doesn't have much luck with. Mac has decided to return home for the out season of his hockey career, he knows he hasn't visited as much as he should. But being the goalie and all his other promotional responsibilities his time is short and visits limited. He knows that his life is hectic, but as more of his team mates have found romance he knows he's missing something in his life. Maybe spending a few months with friends and family he'll find perspective. Having to plan a birthday surprise for his best friend and his twin sister doesn't sound to hard, that is until he realises is Vivi who he's been partnered with. To say they don't get on is an understatement, maybe enemies would be a more suitable phrase. This is a brilliant frenemies story that will have you laughing out loud and swooning in places as well. Melissa always puts everything into her writing and it shows with this story i just didn't want to put it down. Make sure to add to your tbr list you won't regret it ❤️

I love when worlds collide in stories, and Now That We Don't Talk brings together some amazing cameos from the Love on Thin Ice series and pulls through the thread from All the Christmas Vibes. This time, Mac gets to be the center of attention, and that is right where he loves to be!

I love it when an enemies-to-lovers story feels believable. When characters are just downright mean and all the sudden in love, I'm like... 🤔🤨 But what we get is just some surprise chemistry that slowly becomes something more. It's sweet to see Mac and Vivian both surprised by it. I love that they nervously navigate what was a request to get along into a "hey guys, we're together moment." I'm a big fan of mature conversations and relationships in my romcoms. Melissa doesn't make it too serious, and she gives us some really lovely moments not only between Mac and Vivian but also their support groups.

In full transparency, I was reading this in a very full coffee shop and giggling and smiling my head off. This story is just plain cute!

I received a complimentary copy of the author's story to read and review. All thoughts contained here are my own.

This was such a cute read! Vivian and Mac have a unique relationship... their best friends are twins, so they have a history there... but they themselves have never been friends. In fact, they've never really gotten along all that well. But when he comes back to their hometown for a break after hockey season, they agree to try to get along better for the sake of their friends. And boy, do they get along! The sparks fly between this unlikely match. The chemistry between them was really sweet... and still gave lots of banter too. He was just the right amount of cocky, and I loved that she didn't hesitate to give him a hard time about his ego. Their dynamic made me smile throughout and I enjoyed watching them transition into romance. The other relationships in this story (his with his team, both with the twins) also added a lot to the story and I just couldn't help but enjoy it all.

Now That We Don't Talk is a closed-door romance with kisses only and no language.

**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.

Melissa just made my week with this book. I couldn't put this book down!! The story and the characters are well written and enjoyable. This is a slow burn romance but it's worth all the yummy banter between these two. I loved every moments these two shared together.

Vivian has lived in her hometown her entire life and when sh hears Mac is returning she is not happy at all. Years ago she over heard him talking and he said something about her that she never forgave him for. This was the perfect enemies to lovers story.

Mac is a hockey player and when the season ends returns home for the first time in years. Vivian and Mac are best friends with twins Katie and Kyle and when they ask them to try to get along for their birthday party, do you think they can? There's definitely no dull moments in this book. You will laugh, smile like a fool, swoon and be left with a great ending! I would highly recommend this book!

Thank you Melissa Baldwin for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest opinion.

Enemies to lovers is one of my favorites! The banter! I loved getting to revisit previous characters.

Mac and Vivian have known each other for years traveling in the same circle as their best friends are twins. They can’t stand either other though. Mac is a goalie with an inflated ego for good reason. He doesn’t come home often, but the end of the season calls for him to slow down and spend time with family and friends back home. With the news of Mac back in town, they each promise their best friends they will get along. Time flies, life changes, and things aren’t always what they seem. The more time they work on getting along the more they see there is something more. Big events happen for the friends, and they both find their unlikely HEA.

That dedication… “I dedicate this book to everyone who has ever doubted their worth. You are seen, you are valued, and you are more than enough.”

Another great book by Melissa Baldwin. It's another example of why I will read anything she writes! This is a sweet fast read that is true enemies to more. Vivi and Mac are best friends with twins, but don't like each other---she more than he. When Mac is in the off-season for his professional hockey team, the twins ask them to be civil to each other. They agree and in the process realize that there is a lot more there. This is a story with lifelong friendships, found family and real family and opposites attracting. The friendships are so special and you can feel them through the pages. The characters are developed well, leaving the reader to feel like she is part of that friend circle. I really want to be part of the girls' night or to have Addi and Claire plan my party! This is just a feel good story.

Fantastic off-season hockey rom-com! I love a good enemies(or frenemies) to lovers story. I thoroughly enjoyed the banter between Vivian (FMC) and Mac (MMC). Their constant bickering made me laugh out loud at times. Now That We Don’t Talk is another perfect example of strong, healthy female friendships. I love that Melissa highlights those in all her books. I was also thrilled to get updates on love stories from Mac’s teammates, that were highlighted in other books. Go Tennessee Wolves!!

Definitely recommend as a fun, clean rom-com that you won’t want to put down!

This was such a fun read! Once I started, I couldn’t put it down. I think I binged this entire book in less than 24 hours. I always love a good enemies (more like “Man, I can’t stand this person) to lovers book. Vivian and Mac’s chemistry was filled to the brim with banter, tension, and covert flirting.

Hockey player romances are all the rage and Mac definitely takes his rightful place with swoony rom-com hockey players! Vivian was the perfect antithesis to Mac’s energy. Such a fun read and definitely worth every page!

I was lucky enough to receive this ARC

I knew during the first chapter that I was going to love it

The banter was epic,it had me laughing out loud, getting strange looks in the office.

Great short read following childhood enemies Vivian and Mac. Vivian remained in the small town her, Mac, and their mutual best friends Katie and Kyle grew up in, while Mac followed his career path as a professional hockey player.

Mac returns home in the off-season, and things ramp up. I'm saying no more. You really need to read.

It was such a fun, small-town romance that I couldn't put down. Will definitely be on my reread list and an easy purchase to gift.

While Now That We Don’t Talk is loosely connected to Melissa Baldwin’s hockey series, it didn’t resonate with me as much as I’d hoped. I found it hard to connect with Mac, whose actions often disregarded Vivian’s clearly expressed feelings and boundaries. That made it difficult to invest in their relationship fully.

After thoroughly enjoying Love in Overtime, I came into this book expecting a similarly charming and engaging romance—but this one fell a bit flat. The elements that made the previous story so delightful felt noticeably absent here, leaving this as just an okay read for me. So it's a 2.5⭐️ for me.

A fun, enemies to lovers tale
Vivian had never really been friends with Mac. But since Mac was best friends with Kyle and Katie, her best friend was Kyle’s twin, did frequently interact. When Vivian overhears Mac talking about her at a party in an unflattering way, she places Mac squarely in the enemy category. Now years later, they are faced with a over the top birthday party for the twins, thrown by Kyle’s girlfriend/fiancé, and they agree to be cordial. Little did they know that that simple agreement would open doors they never anticipated. A wonderful read you’ll enjoy.

What a fun story, this enemies to lovers trope is so great. Mac is a hockey star, when the season is over, he decided to head to his small hometown for the first time in years. Vivian still lives in their hometown and is not happy to hear he is returning. I loved the banter between the two of them as they tried to avoid each other. When their friends, twins Katie and Kyle ask them to get along for their birthday party, can they? This story is so sweet and swoony, the banter is perfect, and their chemistry is great. A fun story that I really loved reading, hope you do as well.

This was such a fun read! The main characters—and even the secondary ones—felt incredibly relatable, like chatting with good friends. I especially loved the banter between Vivi and Mac; their dynamic kept me hooked from start to finish. One of the highlights for me was the strong communication between all the characters—it’s so refreshing when people actually talk things through! There’s a small third-act breakup (not my favorite trope), but the heartfelt HEA more than made up for it. I’d highly recommend this to anyone in the mood for a sweet and charming romcom!

One of my favorite authors! I love how she will bring back characters from previous books into her new books. You don't have to read them in order or at all, it is just fun knowing their history.

Vivian and Mac pretty much grew up together cause they are best friends to twins. Mac's friend is Kyle and Vivian's is Katie. Vivian and Mac do not get along though but they try to be civil while Mac is home. Being civil leads to something else. I so enjoyed their banter and this story! This is pretty much just a fun read.

Clean Standalone Rom-Com Interconnected Series HEA

Can be read as a standalone however some of the characters overlap with other books. He hasn't been home in a while. Now that hockey season is over he realizes that he needs to reassess his life back in his hometown. What he doesn't expect is the reaction he has to the one person he knows doesn't like him.
She knows he's coming back and there's no way of avoiding him. Will she be able to call a truce for the sake of their mutual friends? They can be civil for the summer right?
Can't wait to see who's next?

Great storytelling. This was a refreshing change from the typical enemies to lovers. I liked that they had friends in common and had to see each other often. It got them to see how people can change and are not who you think they are. The progression of Mac and Vivian’s relationship was well paced. They had chemistry and great banter. I really enjoyed this book and looking forward to many more with the Wolves.

Good light hearted read! My only issue is that I felt like there was no context for why after ignoring one another with borderline hostility, the main characters started liking one another. There was no reasoning given other than “he didn’t see her” and “she started watching hockey and started viewing his ego as endearing.” The book was well written and I didn’t mind reading it, but I probably won’t be reaching for it again.

I read the book as an ARC reader.
It's a good story and I really like Mac, the Mmc. He is the goalie of the Tennessee Wolfs. He finds his match in his "enemy" Vivian. Their banter is quite nice but overall unfortunately something was missing in this story, therefore only 4 stars.
However the hockey world of the Wolfs is great, so I am looking forward to the next book about them.
