I have always wanted to learn more about Margaret Houston, the wife of Texas hero Sam Houston. I found the only book our local library has on her in the children's section. It took me no time to read through it, but I learned a lot.

Margaret was over two decades younger than Sam. Her mother was very much against their marriage as Sam was a drinker and did not attend church. As a politician, Sam was gone from home more than living with his family. No surprise then that this brave mother of eight was alone when she faced a cancer surgery she endured without any anaesthesia. Margaret never complained.

Her faithfulness, strength, loyalty, dedication influenced Sam Houston to the point of conversion and baptism. His last word before he passed away was his wife's name, Margaret.

Although the book is written for children, it is very interesting for adults to read as well.
