You The One and The Two: A Hood Rich Urban Romance

Rate this book
“They say if you love something, set it free and if it comes back to you then it’s yours."

Milani Santana is the definition of beauty, brains, and undeniable strength—a woman who knows exactly what she wants and isn’t afraid to go after it. Despite every fiber of her being telling her that Chop is her soulmate, Milani kept her feelings on the low to protect their bond. At first, it was easy as she was focused on hitting the books and chasing her dreams. But the longer she finds herself loving a man like Chop, the more it starts to drag her down.

Now, the lines between love and pain blur, and she is left asking What’s a girl to do when the man who sets her soul on fire is also the one who leaves it scorched? She deserves more, but will she ever get everything she’s been holding out for?

Demetri “Chop” Washington is the living embodiment of a hood rich millionaire—young, untouchable, and unapologetically free. In his realm, every glance commands respect and every move sparks envy. Women fall hard for his magnetic charm, ready to risk it all just to feel his heat, while men either bow in admiration or step back in fear. He is a renegade who plays by his own rules, untethered and untamed.

Even though Milani’s heart beats solely for him, Chop clings to his player ways, knowing their bond is forged in unbreakable loyalty. But when her burning desire for more starts to shatter his carefully constructed world, will he finally be forced to choose between his notorious freedom or the undeniable pull of true love?

Buckle up—Jda J is about to take readers on an electrifying, emotional roller coaster where passion, power, and heart-stopping decisions collide for better or worse.

good

First read by this author. Is this their first release? Anywho, I thought this was a good start. The plot is engaging, and the characters are interesting. However, I did give 3 stars bc while the actual story was good, the writing could use some touch ups. There were quite a few errors and that became detracting as the book went on. It really felt like there was no proofreading or editing done on the book. Almost as if they typed tbc and sent it straight to publishing. I am looking forward to part 2 though. I just know Lani bet not mess herself up with Chop. I can see it coming with that ending. Hopefully, part 2 will be more polished but still good job overall on this part.

This was a good read!!

Chop was a typical man thinking he can have the best of both worlds! But he couldn’t take it when them tables turned!
Lani was really that girl! She was on her ish & had her life together! She rode hard for Chop he just couldn’t seem to get himself together to love her properly!.

Candy was a NUT CASE!! Delusional is an understatement!

Duke was really that guy!!! A real man from day one!! He was patient, understanding & showed Lani the way she should be treated & loved by the man in her life! He gave me allllll the feels with the way he showed so much love & affection to Lani effortlessly!

The cliffhanger got me! I can’t wait to see how this plays out in book 2!

Listen, I got to 40% and I was ready to write my review 😫

First of all, Milani is THAT GIRL💯 A boss and killer. And I love me some Duke. In any other book, or author’s imagination, he would be the perfect book bae. But call me toxic, because I LOVE ME SOME CHOP🤭

I hate that he got entangled with Candy because she makes my “You know what” itch. She has already done 3 things that she needs to pay the price for, on top of being messy and full of drama. I already started book 2, so please don’t make me wait too long for 3🙏🏾

YOU DID THAT 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

If i knew this was going to end on a cliffhanger, I would've waited to read it. It honestly should've been one book. All the loose ends could've been tied up if Chop pressured Candy more. And everybody see that Lani had clearly moved on. Chop ass see it too; he's just in denial🙄. I do hope he's okay though. He shouldn't have to die for Lani to get her happily ever after. Duke started to piss me off towards the end though. The things coming out his mouth show his insecurities when he shouldn't have any. Lani haven't showed him that he should be questioning her. He better get it together. Reading about characters like Candy is disturbing and baffling at the same time. There's no way in hell there are women out that is that delusional. Like for real. If it is, I'd like to meet one cuz I got questions! 🤣🤣 all in all a good read. I enjoyed it

You the 1

First time reading this author and I am hooked. I love Milani and how she’s a boss and all around dope chick. Her twin is a lil questionable being friends with Candy. I’m glad Chop lost her because he’s creating too much baggage. I really like Duke. Can’t wait for part 2 and to see how it all works out!

This book fluctuated between 2 or 3 stars, and it landed on 3, but I might change my mind 😄. The deets

👎🏾🌩 The first 50% is a bit rough writing wise. From page 1%-58%, it felt like Tubi Movie writing. Writing a novel vs. writing for film is very different feels. Here, we had horrible unnecessary breaking 4th wall for each characters introduction. Legit, stop narrative to pull a "my bad let me introduce myself. I'm szkejekjdje, and this is how I feel". This style is not it for a book. It makes the writing seem unprofessional and unpolished. I almost DNFd off it

👎🏾🌩 The song lyrics taking up space is also a sign of poor writing. using more than 2 lines is aggy and its a cop out from demonstrating character emotion in a scene.

👎🏾🌩 The writing did a lot of simplistic physical traits through actions but then immediately explained it. For example, "Lani twiddle her thumbs looking down. Lani twiddle her thumbs when anxious". 😒 Well yeah clearly the scene was tense and the character's immediate action is to look down and play with their fingers. Or a word is capitalized which lets the reader know that feeling is being emphasize so the writer doesnt need to immediately tell us that emotion was a big deal, which is why hey emphasized the word. This is another form of poor writing technique, and it happened a lot.

👎🏾🌩 The first 50% of the book felt immature and low vibrational energy from all the characters. It was difficult to like Lani or Chop and not in a flawed character way just in a they were coming across as immature way so not fitting their description.

👎🏾🌩Whew lord and then the book hit a line like "This was one of my favorite songs by R Kelly. I didn't care how ppl felt abt him or what he did; you couldn't deny the fact he made good music" 🤢😵‍💫. When readers say books are political this is an example. When we say an author's beliefs can't be separated from their art, this is what we mean. For an author to put this in their book, it serves as a support. It highlights him and supports him. R is in prison for sexually violating teen girls. It's one thing if the author dropped a song title and the FMC vibed or bopped a head but to go out of your way to tell us you don't care you support R is weird flex I almost DNFd over and was prepared to 1-2 star the book.

👍🏾👌🏾 The smex scenes were actually well written and spicy. The author would probably be better served doing Erotica as writing through the plot introduction and background is handled poorly.

👍🏾👌🏾 I immediately was dialed in to Lani and Chop's love story. I was invested.

👍🏾👌🏾 The shift to Duke was well handled. The maturity level popped up. As the story shifted to the next major conflict and climax, the writing got much better. The dialogue was smoother. There were fewer unnecessary scenes. Lani moving like a Boss and less like a bird was a relief. The last 40% of the book felt much better level of writing. I enjoyed Lani's boss moments it was shocking and surprising and well presented on page.

Book Review

You, the One and the Two by Jda J. is a fast-paced, drama-filled story with a lot of moving parts. From the very first chapter, the interaction between Milani (Lani) and Candy grabbed my attention and made me want to keep reading to see where things would go.
That said, there were a few moments where the story's structure felt a bit off. For example, when the paragraph suddenly begins with “Let me introduce myself,” it felt out of place—like an afterthought rather than a natural part of the narrative. This happened with a few character introductions, making them feel somewhat rushed or inserted awkwardly. However, it wasn’t a dealbreaker and I was still invested enough to continue.
As the story unfolded, there were moments of confusion—particularly around the grandmother character. Both Lani and Chop refer to her as “grandma,” which left me unsure whose grandmother she actually was. Some clarification there would have helped. Also, while there are a few grammatical errors scattered throughout, they didn’t significantly take away from the story overall.
This book has a large cast of characters and multiple intertwined storylines, so I’d recommend keeping a notepad nearby to keep track of everyone and everything. It can be a lot to juggle, but it also makes for an engaging, layered read.
Now, let’s talk about the main characters. Lani, one of the twin sisters, has been stuck in a long, toxic back-and-forth with Chop (Demetri) since they were teens. Chop is a classic player—sleeping with whoever he wants—yet expects Lani to stay faithful and wait for him to get over his “hoe phase.” I found myself frustrated with Lani at times for sticking around so long, but her journey felt authentic, and I was rooting for her to finally choose herself.
The backstory adds a lot of emotional depth. Lani and her twin sister Meloni (Luvie) were raised by their grandmother after their parents were killed by one of Luvie’s ex-boyfriends. Chop and his brother Dee grew up with the twins, and while Dee takes on more of an uncle role, Chop and Lani have a complicated romantic history. Things hit a breaking point when Candy—another one of Chop’s women—shows up claiming she’s pregnant with his child. Candy’s delusions about her “relationship” with Chop were wild, but believable in the context of the story.
Eventually, Lani meets Duke, a man who treats her with the love and respect she always wanted from Chop. Their relationship is a refreshing contrast, and when Chop sees Lani truly moving on, it hits him hard.
There’s a lot happening in this book—action, drama, toxic entanglements, and characters with big personalities and even bigger energy. If you're into messy relationships, emotional rollercoasters, and characters trying to find their way through love and loyalty, this one’s worth a read. I genuinely enjoyed it and think fans of urban drama and romance will too.

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

A series that I planned on reading sooner but delayed…

I can tell by book 1, I was missing out😲😉🤩

I can also tell you that this author and these characters gonna stress me TF out😣😔

—————
Spice: spicy scenes were indeed 🥵
Chemistry: Love Triangle of sorts. FMC has great chemistry with her childhood love and amazing chemistry with her new love.
Pacing: good and steady
Drama: a lot going on with several POVs- IMO done well
————

Our FMC is about her business concerning everything but that no good 🥷🏽- her first love.

That drama and disappointment sends her straight into the arms of her new love, Duke.

I’ll say his name so that you understand I am team Duke😏🥰😂

Naturally, Book 1 ends on some drama and decisions…

The completed series is out now on KU
____

Now, let’s code switch the review tone:

Putting on my glasses for a more professional approach 🤓🤓🤓
⬇️

———

“pen game 🔏✅” moment:

- Our FMC’s “dramatic” character change.

Our FMC was introduced as a well put together business woman preparing for her college graduation.

Toward the middle/end of the story, that remained. But, there was a much more grittier side to her than previously exposed.

I think the author did an amazing job leaving the readers “breadcrumbs” throughout the story to hint at this.

The behavior and “role” she played didn’t feel abrupt after it was revealed because we’d gotten hints throughout.

I’d consider it a good shock and plot twist.
————

Thoroughly enjoyed and would definitely recommend this series.

Heading into book 2… y’all pray for me because I’m team Duke but I feel like he will not be the last man standing 🥹😩

Let me tell y’all something real quick—this book was messy, chaotic, and absolutely everything I wanted! The drama? Top tier. The characters? Had me ready to throw my Kindle one minute and clutch it like my pearls the next.

Falling for your best friend is already a slippery slope, but when he’s out here playing house with a whole roster while telling you you’re the one he’d marry? Whew, the audacity! Sis really tried to play it cool, hold him down, and not apply pressure… and he repaid her with mixed signals and messy side chicks.

But the moment one of his flings popped up at her front door? Yeah, game over. Our girl finally said “enough is enough” and started looking out for herself, and that’s when the real fireworks began. Now he wanna act pressed? Now he wanna claim what’s his? Please.

And just when you think it couldn’t get messier—boom!—his side chick goes full unhinged and flips the whole story upside down. Jda J. snapped with this one. I was hooked from page one, and when I say I devoured it and jumped straight into book two with no hesitation? I meant it!

If you’re into a ride-or-die FMC, a man who needs to get his act all the way together, and a story that’ll have you yelling at the pages—run, don’t walk, and grab this book. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

J’da J knows how to pull you into a world full of love, chaos, and emotional whiplash. The story between Milani and Chop had me fully invested from start to finish. Milani is that girl—beautiful, ambitious, and strong even when her heart gets in the way. She deserves so much more than what Chop was giving. Chop might have the looks, money, and charm, but he’s a straight-up clown when it comes to love. He can’t get his act together to save his life, and I found myself rooting for Lani to stand on business and finally move on. Duke might just be the peace she’s been needing.
There were a few grammar errors here and there, but nothing that took away from the story. The emotions, tension, and back-and-forth between love and pain felt real. J’da J delivered a hood romance that leaves you frustrated, hooked, and still wanting more.
Can’t wait to see how part two plays out—because Lani better not go back!

I inhaled this book. I read it in ONE day.

Drama? Check.
Spice? Absolutely.

Characters that make you scream, swoon, and side-eye them like they owe you money? YES.

From the fourth wall breaks (ICONIC) to the cliffhanger that had me running to book two, this story had me in a chokehold. Lani is THAT girl. Chop fumbled. Duke? Book bae for life. And Candy… girl, be serious.

Jda J’s writing? Chef’s kiss. Like having a convo with your hilarious, slightly messy best friend. And not a single POV was skip-worthy, every voice hit.

If you love a no-skips, character-driven series with Black love, chaos, heart, and heat? This is it.
Catch me binge-reading the second book like I got nothing else to do (because I don’t—this is my priority now).

Indie authors stay devouring and Jda J just claimed her spot on my faves list.

Speechless Job Well Done

This story had me tuned in from page one . I’m up at 2am tryna finish it and now I need to know what happens next !!!! Duke is def my new book bae 🥰 he don’t play about Lani. Chop had various chances to get his ish together but has the nerve to still keep his bed warm while still wanting Lani . Lani is a true definition of “to the left, to the left “ she moved on and got the upgrade she deserved . GMA warned Chop and now he is left to lay in the bed he made with that miserable bm of his smh

Lani….

I absolutely love this book. It has kept me on my toes with suspense. My girl Lani is Big Boss Lady, handling her business like a G. She is definitely torn between two loves and is struggling with her heart. I can’t wait to read the second book to see how it all plays out. This is a must read. I literally read this book in one day it was so amazing.

page turner

I was definitely hooked from the beginning. Character build was a little slow but still interesting. I’m so glad lani wasn’t dumb and kept letting chop play with her. I can’t wait until candy get what she deserves. Chops karma is definitely being stuck with a baby mama like candy. I love me some Duke

Good Read!

This book was messy from the first page to the last and I was there for it all! Chop, Candy & Keri were 3 peas in a pod when it came to being delusional 🙄. I’m hoping and praying Lani don’t play with Duke’s feelings or his heart, especially not for a 🥷🏽 that played in her face years.
