Healthy human connection is vital for our happiness and wellbeing, both individually and as a society. Unfortunately, our connections today are often strained, and we may sometimes find it difficult to converse with family members, co-workers and others with kindness, openness and respect. As a result, anxiety and agitation are increasing and our wellbeing is suffering.
Our communication culture has changed significantly in recent years. Increased reliance on digital communications often prioritizes rapid responses and brevity over more thoughtful, nuanced conversations, potentially leading to misunderstandings. We are also experiencing a greater prevalence of mean and disrespectful speech, which has been amplified and even normalized by both social media platforms and the behavior of others.
Imagine an alternative world, where you bring a warm, open attitude to everyone you encounter. Where you bring presence, understanding and compassion to even the most difficult conversations. Attune shows you the path for cultivating these qualities and for bringing kindness and harmony into all of your relationships.
Drawing upon age-old intelligence and practices from the Buddhist tradition, Attune will give you the inspiration, insight and skills needed

Parrish, a Zen Meditation teacher and graduate of the Mindfulness-Based Professional Institute, has developed a Zen-infused course focusing on moving beyond the superficial chit-chat of today's modern world to uncover the gracious, empathic energy of engaged conversation. Speaking to the reader with a warm, compassionate voice from the first page, Parrish suggests there is a way to move from frequent unsatisfactory interactions with others. Parrish begins with chapters on Mindfulness in general, based on the teachings of Master Thich Nhat Hanh. She then moves to mindful communication. The next chapters cover the acronym ATTUNE, a mnemonic that helps the reader remember key points of information that might be new. Always focusing on empathy and inner connectedness, Parrish uses direct and unadorned language. It is as if the author is sharing a cup of tea with the reader while sharing insights. Each chapter offers many opportunities to practice the ideas through meditation. The first appendix includes a list of the practices, and the second provides a bibliography for future resources.
This deceptively slight book would be useful not only for a Zen practitioner. It could be used as a supplementary text in any communications course at the high school or college level. In an age where the style of communication has moved from neighbor-to-neighbor chatting over tea to person-to-person texting emojis, this work will allow a person to hear with their whole being. May we all become Deep Listeners.
Full disclosure: I received this book from the author in exchange for an unbiased review. Thank you for the opportunity.
A thoughtful book that I know I will come back to many times. It offers a sensitive and sensible way of communication with others. In this age of people putting their views to others, in various forms, who could not use a little more awareness, a little more patience? This could actually be a revolutionary practice. What would the world be like if we actually spoke deliberately and listened carefully?
