The one that got away? He just stormed back into my life. And this time, he’s not leaving without a fight. Big. Muscular. Impossible to resist. Oh, and did I mention he’s my high school sweetheart turned battle-hardened Marine?
Chuck Walker was my first love. My first everything. Then he left for the military, and I was nothing but a memory. Now he’s back in our small town, looking at me like he still owns my heart.
But I’m not that girl anymore.
Then one night—one reckless, toe-curling, life-altering night—changes everything. Because now, I’m carrying his baby. And this time, he says he’s staying. But can I trust the man who left me once before?
He’s ready to fight for me. For us. For our baby. But what happens when his next mission threatens to take him away again?
I truly enjoyed this book, and the only improvement I would say is to trim it down a bit. I would guess that maybe 50-100 pages shorter would be awesome, particularly if it removed the repetition in the last 30%.
I actually did not like the hero at the start - thought he was a bit of a douche. But he eventually grew on me as we saw how he grew and identified just how badly he stuffed up. By the end, he was full cinnamon roll and partner goals! 👌🤣 The heroine… boy did the author make you feel for her. Understandably hesitant to meet him halfway, but eventually growing to accept and (not actively hate) his life in the military.
The author did a fantastic job showing his growth, plenty of inner monologues for his thoughts, and hoo-boy…. What a take charge attitude! Can someone find me on those please! 🤣
The story definitely had a bit more depth than I expected… however at 450+ pages, it should rightfully do so. There was essentially zero rushing which wasn’t a problem in the first half. Like I already said, a lot of repetition in the back half really slowed the book and had me skimming paragraphs as I felt that I had already read them before…
Oh well, a book with romance, suspense, a (slightly) steel-spined heroine, cinnamon roll hero and an awesome BFF… what more could you ask for… Maybe a book for the BFF or one of his military buddies who moves to town?.

He reconnects with Stella, and one reckless night will alter their course. Will Chuck and Stella get their chance to rekindle the love once had and a second chance to find happiness. Have you ever read a romance book before and thought WOW did I just finish this entire book in a day. We'll let me tell you that is exactly what happened to me when I began to read about Chuck (which I love the name because it's my husband's name) and Stella. This romance book is exceptionally awesome, and I can't see this book not receiving anything but a perfect 5/5-star review.
This is a small town, high school sweethearts story with 10 years of separation. Will Chuck win Stella back? Can she trust that he won't leave again? It's a sweet story and it's worth reading!
