Through The Night

Rate this book
It’s about survival... It always is, though. Hatchet Valley's a deep rocky cleft, where people live when they're too mean to live anywhere else, and where they go when they don't want to be found. Some are brought there against their will, and some by circumstance and bad luck. Whoever they are, they carry secrets, and there's no tinder dryer than a room filled with people carrying secrets. In the middle of this balancing act, a catalyst drops, a spreading wave of tooth, claw, and hunger. Something's entered the valley, and dusk in Hatchet Valley becomes a time of slaughter. Those who aren't mown down are driven to the very end of the valley, to a single cabin. Here, surrounded by beasts, eleven strangers fight to survive until dawn, struggling to understand what's hunting them. But survival's not easy when everyone has a secret, and the secrets people carry to Hatchet Valley are the kinds of secrets that can get you killed. Before the end of the night, the survivors start to wonder if their chances won't be better outside the cabin...

A crazy yet weirdly grounded, space-alien-meets-werewolf horror story with a great cast of characters and an almost Stephen King like voice, especially in terms of how real the human factor feels. Through the Night goes at a breakneck pace and is difficult to put down. The story has a lot of cinematic elements, and doesn't waste a word, as events unfold fast after a meteorite lands in a remote area of the woods where only hikers, campers, recluses, drug smugglers and small town wedding participants could possibly stumble upon it, and the deadly surprise waiting inside.

As with most stories that really grip me, the people really made it. Knife-wielding, teenaged Erin, who thinks her biggest problem is a too-perfect sister before she encounters what looks like a werewolf outside her family's trailer. Jake, who lives with his wife out in the woods and writes books and generally enjoys being off the grid until a bunch of blood-spattered strangers show up at his door. A husband, wife and baby who can't seem to decide if they'd rather kill one another or plot against the others to survive. A well-armed Bonnie and Clyde type couple, madly in love and with secrets of their own as they pass through the wilderness to visit family.

And yeah, surprises. I don't want to give too much away, but, yeah. "Two thin furry arms"...I'll just leave you with that.

I'll definitely be looking for more of this writer's work!

A creative, eclectic cast and plenty of gruesome action from start to finish.

Excellent

I really didn't know what to expect from this book because of the very short chapter;. however, they actually made it easier to read. Once I began reading, I couldn't stop. Exciting story with creatures eating, or trying to eat, everyone they can find. Lots of action, and the gore associated with killing and eating people. If you like this sort of book, then put this one on your to-do list.

An unexpected pleasure

This book has it all....drama, suspense, and the supernatural. I was swept up in this tale of survival. A tale of the determination to survive at any and all costs. The unbelievable happened and it took so many lives that I lost count. Great read with lovable characters and a great plot!

Great read

Not what I expected, but turned out to be a great, fast and fun read. Characters are a mix of what you would expect if this was real. Some hero's, some bad boys and some ,,, well let's say they are whiney. All told it's a fun read. Hope there is a movie
