Vincent Michael Scanlan, T.O.R. was a Roman Catholic priest of the Franciscan Third Order Regular. He was responsible for the revival of the College of Steubenville, now known as Franciscan University of Steubenville. Scanlan served the university for 26 years as president and then 11 years as chancellor, before retiring in 2011.
He resided at the Sacred Heart Province motherhouse in Loretto, Pennsylvania prior to his death.
This book is a great spiritual book about the influence of the Holy Spirit. Also this book is made much more interesting by my having gone to Franciscan. The writing style and content was no Confessions (st. Augustine), but reads like a truly humble and holy man wrote it. Definitely a good reminder to pray and let the Holy Spirit into your life and guide your plans, which is worth more than most bestsellers anyways.
Really great book about the life of Fr Scanlan and how Steubenville was made into the Catholic bemouth that it is today. Also has a really interesting viewpoint on spiritual growth. Would recommend.
A great story of both Fr Michael Scanlan and Franciscan University. I learned so much about the ups and downs of the spiritual life. Definitely gave me my deepest encounter with the Charismatic renewal, and just a deeper appreciation and understanding of the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Special thanks to @JohnGlynn for giving me this book.
Update 9/22/25: Loved reading this one again because it is a very rich story in so many ways. Really enjoyed focusing on different elements and seeing things differently at a different point in my life. “I came to set the world afire, how I wish it were already ablaze” Luke 12:49 I just love the image of fire, fire in our hearts needed to spread fire in the hearts of others and the whole world. The fire that burns with love for Jesus, the love of the Trinity. Beautiful.
I knew who Father Michael was through his activity with the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and his leadership at Steubenville. But the book allowed me to walk through his faith journey and be a witness how the Holy Spirit has guided him through doubt and success. An inspiring read to begin the season of Lent
