I very much enjoyed reading this! Fr. Scanlan's advice was very encouraging. While I'm certainly not up to this level of prayer at all, it definitely gave me some new inspiration for where I am :)

A review by Anthony T. Riggio of the book “Appointment with God” written by Father Michael Scanlon.

I was introduced to this book by a recommendation by “J”, a friend from Goodreads who was very laudatory of this book. It peaked an interest and I tried to find it on Amazon and was shocked to find it listed for $647.00 plus shipping from a third party seller. I then tried , a purveyor of used books and located a copy for a couple of bucks plus shipping for under ten dollars. When I received this book or rather “booklet” I was pleasantly surprised that it was the exact same cover seen on Amazon for the exorbitant price . I did not realize at first it was 59 pages and when I skimmed through it, I knew I had to be in a prayerful mood and place to read it.

I took an hour during a First Friday Adoration and read half of the book but found it so interesting, I knew I was not going to wait for the next first Friday to finish it, leaving me with a need for a quiet and non disturbing place to read the rest. I did and I have to tell everyone it is a book I will read over and over again. You can not rush its reading because it forces the reader into a prayerful state of being and you just can't rush the state or mood it forces on the reader.

It is a little book on how to pray and when. As the title states, you need to make an appointment with God (really, a time you set aside for God).. The book outlines in the chapters listed such things as: Attitude; Acknowledgment and Praise for God; A listening to what the Holy Spirit says to us; A mood of realistic repentance; and deals with Petition and the need for intercession coupled with our responses and resolutions. This book is truly a blueprint for prayer life in a light and easy form.

As a Catholic, it was easy for me to follow Scanlon's formula but it is not just for Catholics. I firmly believe that my Protestant brothers and sister would find this outline very beneficial to their prayer life.

I found this little book very rewarding and will read it often ( I believe that it is easily read in two hours, given the need to be with God as you do so.) I am thankful for the recommendation by fellow member “J” for recommending this gem.

I gave the book five stars out of five because I was only given a set appreciation limit. The book/booklet is worth so much more. I hope the Franciscan Press puts out a new printing but there are copies out there for nominal costs.

Read this book.

Even though it is less than 60 pages, it took me longer than expected to read because I needed to absorb and listen to every passage in this book.

Appointment With God is a book that teaches you how to pray - a task that seems so simple, yet so complicated at the same time. Fr. Scanlan drops wisdom and insight on every page. There is so much power and wisdom in such a slim book.

I plan to read parts of this book over and over frequently, because there was so much to take in that I need to make sure i understand it all. Buy this book. It'll change your life.

I was up until midnight last night re-reading this little gem. I'm usually a fast reader, but I kept pausing to reflect. Fr. Mike's no-nonsense personality shines through as well as his profound spirituality.

I will not be surprised if he is canonized one day. <3 #ProudFUSAlum

Highly recommend to anyone that wants to establish (or re-establish) a daily personal prayer time.
