A marriage on the rocks, a missing friend, and a tangle of shocking lies converge at a peaceful North Carolina lakefront cottage in this irresistibly twisty new psychological thriller from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Shanora Williams—perfect for fans of Liv Constantine, Tarryn Fisher, Kellye Garrett, and Caroline Kepnes.

Investigative reporter Rose Howard is exhausted from trying to manage her seemingly perfect life. With her marriage to the man she thought was her one true love collapsing, she desperately needs for one thing to go right.

While striving for a promotion to senior reporter, her efforts are interrupted when she learns her former best friend and travel vlogger, Eve Castillo, isn't responding to attempts to contact her at the North Carolina cottage she's reviewing. Rose knows Eve can be flaky and irresponsible. And after Eve breaks the ultimate ethical friendship code and crosses boundaries to the point of no return, Rose wants nothing to do with her. Still, Rose heads to the tranquil small town of Sage Hill …

Rose soon discovers that Eve has vanished without her purse and passport—even after booking a trip abroad. The personable cabin owners’ accounts of Eve's stay just don’t add up … and most of the town's initially hospitable inhabitants become increasingly less helpful …

Rose's instincts tell her the solution lies somewhere in Eve's—and Sage Hill's—past. To get answers, she’ll have to ask inconvenient questions, stumble onto shocking truths, and face vicious attempts on her life. But some truths are best left alone. And secrets Rose never saw coming could easily sink her, and her future, without a trace …

WHEWWWWW THIS WAS MESSYYYY!

In Whispers of the Lake, we have Rose whose marriage is on the collapse, while trying to deal with that she finds out her best friend Eve has gone missing. Eve is behind the reason why Rose's marriage is on the rocks, but the journalist in her cant ignore the warning signs and she will stop at no means to find what has happened to her so called friend.

Oh, Shanora one thing you will always do is have me standing to attention with your thrillers! While this short read started slow, it soon picked up and had me clutching my invisible pearls in sheer audacity!

I LOVE Rose! Because personally if my best friend had betrayed me the way Eve had I don’t think I would have been so forthcoming to want to look for her ass! Rose was a powerhouse from start to finish and her resilience throughout had me so excited reading to see what would happen next.

Sigh! Eve! Now Shanora I know you tried to make sympathise with this woman from her journal entries, but I am so sorry, I just CANT! Is her backstory devastating… Absolutely! But I feel like she used it as a weapon to excuse her recklessness. She came off very childish with a victim mentality and I just couldn’t shake it off. I can have empathy for her, but I couldn’t condone none of her present actions.

This book was messy AF! And no one is to be trusted! I was side eyeing all the residents in Sage Hill and everyone was a suspect in Eve’s disappearance!

When the truth came out I had no time to react fully as it turned into an OTT Tyler Perry action movie, and I was gagged! Suspension of disbelief and a little caricature-ish with the ending but it was still entertaining reading.

⋆。°✩WHAT I LIKED⋆。°✩

⋆。°✩WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE⋆。°✩

➽ Not necessarily a issue, but it was more of a mystery than a thriller

I can always rely on this author to bring the sheer audacity and drama with her characters and i cant wait to see what she releases next.

This felt like a murder mystery dressed up as a thriller. Kinda gave Lifetime movie energy. Predictable as hell, but I was still nosy enough to finish it. Small town, missing bestie, locals acting weird, classic setup. Rose, an investigative journalist whose life is lowkey falling apart, heads to a quiet North Carolina town to check on her exbest friend Eve, who suddenly stopped answering. Of course, Eve’s gone, her stuff’s still there, and everyone in town gets shady real fast.

I had a good time even if I guessed most of the twists before they landed. I didn’t love it, didn’t hate it, but it did its job and kept me entertained.

I listened to the audiobook for this one and I really liked the narrator a lot. This is a quick read and an interesting thriller. It wasn’t quite as twisty as I was hoping for, but it was a fun ride. When Rose is told her oldest friend is acting out of character and no one has heard from her she tries not to care since they aren’t currently speaking. But she can’t help but try to find out what happened to her. As she goes to the tiny town her friend was last seen at there is clearly something wrong. Everyone is acting suspicious and no one will help her to find what happened to her friend. This book is mostly told in Rose’s perspective with journal entries from Eve strewn throughout the chapters. I really liked getting to see things from Eve’s perspective, it really added to the story.

I enjoyed this story to some extent. I loved the writing and how fast paced it was. I did enjoy some of the twist and turns too. However, i just don't think i like any of these characters.

I could not stand the missing friend Eve. The more the story revealed about her, the more i disliked her. I'm not going to say she deserved what happened to her in the end but i'm also not going to say she didn't. But at least she had the "grew up in abusive household" crotch to fall on. The FMC Rose on the other hand, well...

Rose really got on my nerves a lot. I don't know if that was the author's intention. If it was, kudos to her because it worked. Rose had no sense of preservation and whatsoever and lacked self love. Old girl was doing the most for a raggedy ass friend

"Why was I breaking into houses and sneaking onto people's property for a woman who'd betrayed me? For a friend who likely wouldn't have been doing the same for me if she suspected my life was in danger"

"Even though Eve hurt me, deceived me, made me feel lower than I'd ever felt in my life, I never wished death upon he"

Rose was better than me because I was wishing worse than death on Eve the entire time.

Overall, this was good fast paced mystery read with great twist and turns.

Whispers of the Lake 4⭐️

“Fuck happiness.” This was the first line of the book and instantly won me over. Rose is a few months out from her life turning upside down in an instant. Now she’s newly single and no longer speaking to her best friend, Eve. Rose gets pulled back into Eve’s world when her little sister asks Rose for help when Eve stops responding to calls and texts. Rose’s investigative reporter skills lead her to Sage Hill, Eve’s last known location. Rose is determined to find answers.

I loved reading from Rose’s 1st person POV. My brain naturally narrates my thoughts the same way Rose talks/thinks which made it an easy read. She’s a character who loves deeply but also sets boundaries based on her self-respect. This complicates things for her, but I appreciated she wasn’t a pushover friend/wife. I liked the build up of the book more than the ending. The ending was fine: action packed and no loose ends, definitely over-the-top. I think part of me was just sad that my time with Rose came to an end.

Today I received Shanora Williams’s ‘The Wife Before’ in the mail from a Goodreads Giveaway win. I’m excited to read more of her work!

3.5 ⭐️ | Intriguing read that held my attention and was overall entertaining. With a mysterious and eerie undertone, it blended small town secrets & emotional drama.

When Rose & her best friend Eve end their friendship after many many years, Rose is the least bit concerned when Eve’s sister Zoe calls to inform her that Eve is missing. Eve has been a bit unpredictable, a bit of a wild card and sometimes known for disappearing. Rose is asked to investigate her ex friends disappearance, and it takes her to a small town that clearly follows their own rules. Secrets are revealed, trusts are broken, as Rose tries to uncover the truth about her missing friend.

Overall a decent mysterious storyline that was worth the read. I enjoyed the alternating POVs from Rose’s point of view and Eve’s diary. There weren’t many twists and turns in this story, as a typical thriller would have, I would classify the more of a mystery. Thank you Kensington Publishing and NetGalley for this advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.

Shanora just has my entire heart. I will literally read anything she writes and know I will have a good time. I love how fast paced this was, while simultaneously having a good build up. At the end of each chapter, I kept telling myself I would "only read one more chapter" but I found myself not able to stop at times.

Rose is trying to find her best friend (Eve) who went missing unexpectedly. They aren't really on the best of terms so it's really hard for Rose to put a lot of effort into the investigation and she almost seems annoyed to do so. Rose is still close to Eve's younger sister, who is worried about Eve, so she decides she will fully investigate what is going on. Now you're basically following her journey of figuring out what is going on and where Eve is. I thought it was bingeable, quick, and entertaining.

Thank you to Shanora, NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the eARC.

Whisperers of the Lake is my first book by Shenora Williams, and I ended up binging it in one sitting. From the very beginning, the story pulls you in with an eerie tension that keeps building, and I found myself needing to know what happened next.

Williams crafts a mystery full of red herrings, jaw-dropping twists, and scenes that genuinely made me pause and take it all in. Just when I thought I had a grip on what was going on, something completely unexpected would shift the direction of the plot. That unpredictability was one of the book’s strongest elements.

The characters are flawed and complicated, and the setting adds an extra layer of atmosphere to the overall suspense. That said, I recommend checking the content warnings before diving in, as there are mentions of physical, emotional, and mental abuse that may be triggering.

While I didn’t completely love every twist, and a few moments felt a bit too over the top for my taste, I still really enjoyed the ride. If you’re into dark, twisty thrillers with a fast pace, Whisperers of the Lake is worth a read.

This would be good if you're looking for a fast( day or less) read, .. if you have a long flight or a beach day.. it's leans a little to heavy on the "basic" side for me. I do like how some chapters were journal entries.

I feel as if I'm not a good candidate to give a fair indepth review of this book because I couldn't connect to one of the FMCs.. I'm sorry but, Disney on ice would be performing in Hell before I went looking for a former
"best friend" that fu*ked my husband. And the other FMC hit too close to home & had me & my daddy issues in their feelings

It also sort of annoyed me personally how immature she was for someone who was in therapy

I can't say I see myself personally recommending this book but I also wouldn't discourage anyone from reading it

Thank you RBMedia and NetGalley for the ALC in exchange for my honest review. I really loved the narrators voice, it was smooth and easy to listen to.

Whispers of The Lake Follows Investigative reporter Rose Howard as she searches for her estranged friend, Eve who vanishes without a trace. The story is pretty straightforward and kept my interest although I found it a little slower then some other books I’ve read lately. Recently published you’ll want to add this to your reading list if you enjoy mysteries involving a missing person.

A fast paced emotional thriller that takes every twist and turn imaginable

Audiobook Stats:

I really enjoyed the main narrators dictation of the novel. It was clear and concise, and the tempo was consistent throughout the novel. I never had to adjust my speed during playback. The inserts of eaves POV with the second narrator were also done very well. I think it was an excellent choice to give Eve a different "voice" to show the difference between the two characters.

Short Synopsis:
Rose's head is still reeling from her best friend's ultimate betrayal, and the fact that her husband's cheating. After finishing a divorce, she decides to move forward when she discovers her best friend is currently missing and the last place that she was seen was at this lake house. Against her better judgment, Rose sets off to find her bestie Eve and heads into a sinister town, where nobody is really your friend.

General Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this psychological thriller more than I expected to. This author has been on my radar for a while because I've heard the best things about their twisty and Bendy thrillers that are fast paced and unpredictable. This fit every single one of those qualifications.

The premise and storyline of this book was not exactly unique. Best friend goes missing, cheating husband who seems suspicious, an eerie lake town where everybody seems to know more than they say they do? But when I tell you the ride through this book was 100% unique and emotional. I had no idea what was going on from one moment to the next and can genuinely say I did not guess the ending of this novel before it was revealed.

A psychological thriller isn't exactly the type of genre where I go in looking for a lot of development for the main character. But Rose really went through it in this novel, and I do feel like she was a changed woman by the end of it. The plot line did not suffer for the focus on the characters though. I was fully integrated into this plot line and could not stop listening.

I found the story to be quite quick paced, and I even enjoyed the excerpts where we got to hear some of Eve's own journal entries. I found that to give depth and understanding to Eve's character and her motivations, and just further along the plot in a very interesting way.

I cannot wait to dive into this author's backlog. I definitely need more of it.

Disclaimer: I read this book via NetGalley audiobook from Recorded Books. All opinions are my own. This is my honest and voluntary review.

I never go into a Shanora Williams thriller with any expectations because I know she is going to twist and turn me out of them LOL. And boy did these twists and turns turn and twist!

Whispers of the Lake is a gripping, atmospheric tale about chosen family and sisterhood, and ushers in discourse around two important topics:
1) How far would you go to find a best friend who's done the unthinkable to you?
2) How much do we, consciously or unconsciously, expect bad things to happen to people who live their lives in ways we don't understand?

When investigative reporter Rose's best friend Eve goes missing after a visit to small town Sage Hill, Rose pushes past Eve's recent betrayal and goes to search for answers relentlessly. Sage Hill is a tight-knit town committed to holding in each other's secrets, so she is met with lots of zipped lips and cold shoulders, but Rose's journalistic skills, Eve's journal, and Rose's work connections lead her down a path she never expected.

I really love thrillers that make us challenge the way we think about things. So many times we engage with true crime stories and hear about the woman who lit up a room then learn they've been brutally murdered. Or we read about the party girl who slept around and aren't surprised when they go missing. This book forces the reader to face these biases head on and navigate with a main character who must first put aside her grudges and inability to forgive to find the answers she seeks. I thought this aspect of the book was very powerfully-written and engaging.

While I would consider this more of a mystery than a thriller, I thought the campy nods to horror movies were engaging—and frustrating, as always—but they added to the atmospheric value of the narrative. The first half is slow, but the second half is so worth hanging around for.

The narrators were engaging and easy to listen to—I enjoyed the audiobook very much!

Thank you to Kensington Publishing, Dafina, RBmedia, Recorded Books, Shanora Williams, and NetGalley for sending me an ALC and an ARC!

This book is the definition of a page turner. Once I started I couldn’t put it down. This story is told through a 1st person POV of the FMC with flashes of past tense POV with journal entries of the missing character Eve.

From the 1st few chapters I really wanted to hate Eve because her character is written with so many toxic layers. But I emphasize with her story and ended up rooting for her growth. The way Shanora writes allowed me to fully connect with characters that I might normally loath. The story was fast paced, and the plot twists were believable without being predictable. I definitely recommend reading this book if you’re looking for drama, mystery & and character growth.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing early access to this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

This was a compelling and twist-filled psychological thriller that kept me engaged from start to finish. I especially appreciated the fast-paced narrative and how easy it was to follow in audio format—perfect for a binge-listen.

I would give this a solid 3.5 stars. It was my first read by this author, and I’m definitely intrigued to explore more of their work in the future.

The story centers around Rose Howard, a high-profile investigative reporter whose life is unraveling—her career is at a breaking point, and her marriage is on the rocks. When she learns that her former best friend, Eve Castillo, has mysteriously gone off the grid during a stay at a peaceful North Carolina lakefront cottage, Rose heads to the small town of Sage Hill in search of answers. But what starts as a concerned visit quickly spirals into something darker.

The townspeople are cagey, the cabin owners’ stories don’t quite add up, and the tranquil town hides some deeply buried secrets. As Rose digs deeper, she realizes that some truths are dangerous—and uncovering them may cost her everything. 🕵🏻‍♀️

I’m such a Shanora stan, her thrillers never miss. This one had me hooked from the start. Rose? A better woman than me, truly. I loved her so much and didn’t want the story to end because her personality just felt real and grounded in the best way. The twists kept me entertained, and I was flipping pages like my life depended on it. The ending was a bit underwhelming, but overall it was such a good read.

“Whispers of the Lake” begins with a sharp emotional cut: investigative reporter Rose Howard, reeling from having caught her husband cheating with her childhood best friend Eve Castillo, is trying to rebuild her life. When Eve disappears without a trace from a tranquil lake-front cottage in Sage Hill, North Carolina, Rose reluctantly goes to investigate. The setup promises both personal drama and a mystery with stakes that go deeper than missing luggage.

Shanora Williams steadily raises tension as Rose enters the picturesque yet unsettling town of Sage Hill. The lake cottage, the morning mist, and the tight-lipped townsfolk provide a moody backdrop for Rose’s investigation, which alternates with the haunting journal entries of Eve, offering insight into her secrets and wounded past.

Rose is torn between her professional instincts and personal history: she wants answers, yet she’s still hurt and distrustful of Eve. That fracture gives the story emotional weight. The mystery itself has strong moments, suspect characters, red herrings, and the small-town vibe of everyone hiding something.

Overall, this is a strong thriller with a heartfelt emotional core. There is a blend of the missing-person mystery with personal betrayal, trauma, and the question of what loyalty means when your best friend damages you. The small-town lake setting adds atmosphere, and the dual-perspective (Rose + Eve’s journal) gives the story texture.

Whispers Of The lake centers around the disappearance of Rose's ex best-friend. When social media influencer Eve goes missing, her sister asks Eve's former best-friend for help tracking her down. Reluctantly Rose starts to investigate, being the true investigative reporter that she is and finds herself down a rabbit hole in a small town covering its dirty secrets.
Told mainly from Rose's POV interspersed with Eve's journal entries.
The book gives a realistic set of characters with their own history and flaws. A Reluctantly heroine in Rose who I have to say is not the usual annoying bad decision maker we often see in books like these. Rather she is a mature level-headed woman making sensible decisions. Eve is a sympathetic character who shows us her true colours warts and all and help give an extra layer to the story Rose unravells.
With a few twists and turns the story is well paced and intriguing throughout, however having listed on audio I do feel like the narrator was lacking in emotion towards the end of the book when things turn high stakes. She kept her voice rather calm which did not fit the scene. Apart from that she was excellent throughout and of course this wouldn't be an issue when reading instead.

many thanks to RBmedia who provided me with an audio copy of this book via NetGalley for review. All opinions are my own.

Happy publication day 🎉🥳🎧

Shanora Williams is a completely new to me author, and what a way to discover her with this title.

Very tricky not to spoiler, but essentially Rose has caught her husband in the act with her best friend Eve. Eve has gone AWOL and Rose (who is a far better person than I’ll ever be, because I’d have left her awol got on with my life and there would’ve been no book) is searching for her, the story from there is jam packed action, suspense and mystery. Neither woman is particularly easy to like, but the character development is solid, because I ended up really feeling for both women.

A fairly short novel with a runtime of around 6 hours, this is a great piece of work, and I really enjoyed it. I’m keen to read more from the author.

The dual narration by Jasmin Walker and Dominique Franceschi was excellent both made the characters real and kept up with the fast pace of the story.

Huge thanks to RBmedia and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this ALC 🎧

I really enjoyed this story! I listened on audio, and even though one of the narrators voice was kind of annoying, it didn’t bother me too much because she only narrated Eve’s journal entries… So it wasn’t that much of the book. Although I kind of expected the twist, this was a good story overall, and I listened and finished very quickly!

2.5 ⭐️s. Maybe I have fallen off the generic mystery/thriller bandwagon, so take this review with a grain of salt, however, this book hurt my feelings. I struggled to finish it because it had me frustrated for majority of the read. The synopsis is, a woman’s ex best friend goes missing and despite the rift in the friendship, she goes on the hunt to find out what happened.

For starters, I was not a fan of either of the female main characters. Both of them needed some serious work. Eve had some demons which given her past, it's understandable, however it felt like she chose when and where she wanted to utilise them to get her way. On the flip side, Rose was fair to partly self-righteous at times. Also, she put herself in situations that had me asking myself, now why would you do that as a regular citizen? Out there poking the figurative bear, but I guess the plot needed her to do such. I get that one does not have to like the characters for the book to be good but being continuously frustrated by these two did not make for a good reading experience for me.

I was not really a fan of the writing style as it felt forced and did not flow naturally (to me). Additionally there were several discrepancies that had me scratching my head. It also felt a bit cliché at times. I know genres have a prototype upon which they are all loosely based around but some parts felt very “cookie cutter” in nature.

The overall storyline did have potential and therefore will capture its intended audience, but this one was not for me.

There's something about books with a secluded camp/woodsy setting that will ALWAYS lure me in!! I couldn't read this one fast enough!

Whispers on the Lake starts with a bang. There's Rose, who is hurt that she caught her husband & her bestie, Eve, having sex. Her husband doesn't seem too apologetic about it 😒

Rose cuts all ties with Eve, but puts herself in danger to get final answers once Eve is determined missing. Not just once.. but a few times. (What a friend - I'm not sure it would've been me! 🥴)

Eve had an abusive childhood, which showcases in her present day relationships & impulses. I felt a little bad for her & wished she was able to seek help sooner. This can be triggering for some readers!

I liked Eve's journal entries, which tells us more about her past & gives clues on who may be the one to blame for her disappearance. But don't worry, there are a few turns to make you second guess! My initial thought on "who" was wrong. But as the book moves along, the culprit becomes clear. I would say this is more of a mystery than a thriller.

The ending was a little... crazy 😅 - you definitely get the true villain effect!

Thanks to Shanora Williams & Kensington Publishing for the eARC! 🩷
