Born into a legacy of control and cruelty, Benjamin was never given a choice in the man he would become.
His father, a master manipulator and predator, made sure of that. Every lesson drilled into him, every punishment endured, was designed to sharpen him into something ruthless—something incapable of weakness. Emotion was irrelevant. Compassion was a liability. Power was the only thing that mattered.
Now, locked away in prison, he finally has time to reflect on the life he was forced to lead. But even behind bars, his father’s grip still lingers, his presence like a disease embedded in his son's psyche. Is he truly a psychopath, as his father always insisted? Or was he moulded into one, shaped by the hands of a man who never saw him as a son—only an heir to his monstrous empire?
As Benjamin battles his past, the war between nature and nurture rages on. Stripped of control for the first time in his life, he is left with a question that terrifies him more than any prison sentence—who is he, when his father is no longer there to tell him?
A chilling psychological thriller running parallel to the events of The Bride’s Revenge, Becoming Benjamin is a harrowing addition to The Forgotten Bride series into the making of a monster—and whether he was ever meant to escape it.
Part of The Forgotten Bride psychological thriller series by Philip Anthony Smith, Becoming Benjamin is an unputdownable, must-read for lovers

Get a free book by clicking here! Philip Anthony Smith made his debut as an author in 2024 with his first psychological thriller, 'Run For Your Life', which released in April of the same year.
As a first time author, he has no accolades or awards to show off, but boasts a lifetime of desire to become an acclaimed story teller.
After a long string of seemingly unrelated professions including window cleaner, SMS psychic and small business owner, Philip decided 2024 was the year to bring his stories to life.
Becoming Benjamin is the third instalment in The Forgotten Bride series. In this book, it's all about Alex. Running alongside The Bride's Revenge ( book 2), it shows you Alex's life behind bars. It also takes you back into his past, giving you an insight into his childhood and upbringing. What made him the person he is today.
This book certainly packs a punch. A writer who can get me sympathising with the villain takes some real skill in my eyes. There was one section in the story that made me feel so uncomfortable, I felt it in my gut. The feeling of dread from the anticipation that Phil builds up in this scene is immense. I found myself rooting for Alex.
What I love about Phils writing is how easy it is to get lost in the story. The words just flowed effortlessly off the pages. I was so immersed in Alex's world that the time just got away from me. I could have quite happily read this in one sitting if I didn't have kids or a house or things to do!
I went into this book thinking I knew how it was going to play out and them that twist... Oh boy!
My only disappointment is that I've finished and I have to wait for the last book.
This is a series I'd recommended you add to your tbr. Each book in this series is as good as one another. I think for me, Becoming Benjamin just pips the top spot.
Thank you so much, Philip Anthony Smith, for having me on your ARC team. It's been a hell of a ride so far. Here's to the next one!
The first thing I need to say is WOW! This has to be the BEST one of the series so far!!!
This is the third book in the Forgotten Bride series and, although it's from a completely different perspective, you definitely still need to read the first two before you read this one.
⚠️If you haven't read the others don't read the reviews or the blurb for this book otherwise you'll find out a book one reveal⚠️
This story takes us on a journey of discovery into how Benjamin came to be.
As a child, Alex had it tough but his loving Mother kept him on the right side of the tracks as best as she could. However, his Father was an abusive, poisonous presence in their lives with a business that would eventually blow their lives apart.
Through the past and present narrative there is a slow untangling of lies, revelations and heartbreaking realisations all of which played a part in the making of Benjamin.
I enjoyed how we touched on some scenes from the last book, but from Alex's point of view, this tied them together nicely.
As well as his past, we spend time with him in the present, and find out about experiences he has in prison that tip the balance between Alex and Benjamin, which scale will win out?
I have such split emotions about Alex after reading this. I feel so much love for that little boy, for his potential and promise. For his desire to do right and we sometimes get a glimpse of that little boy in adult Alex. However, I absolutely detest grown up Alex!!
I also grieve for the Hank I thought I knew through book one and most of book two! I loved him so much. Suffice to say, I don't anymore!! Although there is one part where his inner Hank shone through fleetingly which I really liked 🩷
I love that Philip has enabled me to feel such strong emotions about these people through his writing, it shows pure talent!
This story is just all engrossing and kept me gripped from start to finish.
I definitely recommend reading this as it gives a whole new vibe to the series!
I was sent an ARC of this in exchange for an honest review ❤️
Benjamin was never meant to be just a boy. He was forged, sharpened, and sculpted into something ruthless—a tool, a weapon, an heir to his father’s monstrous empire. Emotion was a weakness. Compassion, a liability. Power was the only thing that mattered—and his father ensured he never forgot it.
Now, locked away and powerless for the first time, Benjamin faces a terrifying question—without his father’s control, who is he really?
The way this story unfolds is absolutely brilliant. Philip Anthony Smith doesn’t just tell Benjamin’s story—he peels it back layer by layer, like a psychological puzzle you can’t walk away from. The twists and turns keep coming, each one revealing a new, unsettling truth. And just when you think you have a grip on who Benjamin really is—bam—the final reveal isn’t just jaw-dropping, it’s mind-blowing.
The tension is thick, the emotions raw, and the battle between nature and nurture plays out with a chilling intensity. You feel Benjamin’s turmoil, the weight of his past pressing in, the shadow of his father still looming over him like a ghost that refuses to let go.
This isn’t just a story about a man shaped by a monster—it’s a deep, unsettling dive into identity, control, and the terrifying power of influence. If you love psychological thrillers that get under your skin and refuse to let go, Becoming Benjamin is an absolute must-read.
[A quick note before I start my review to say that this is part 3 in a series and shouldn’t be read as a standalone!]
The devil works hard, but Philip Anthony Smith works harder! The anticipated third book in ‘The Forgotten Bride’ series, ‘Becoming Benjamin’ was just as addictive and twisted (if not more so) than the first two books.
Having a full book dedicated to the point of view of the perpetrator, Benjamin, was both fascinating and heartbreaking. Seeing his story unfold from childhood, with alternating chapters of then and the present day, I was completely gripped by his story.
Yet again, I thought I had this figured out, and yet again I shouted WHAT!? out loud. This series deserves SO MUCH MORE hype; If you haven’t already, you need to read The Forgotten Bride and start this psychological thriller journey!
Thank you to Philip for my ARC of this book, again, it was an absolute honour to get to read such a masterpiece early.
“In a way, I was actually glad she was dead and buried because finding out what I had become would have killed her anyway.”
Becoming Benjamin is the third book in The Forgotten Bride series and I am so pleased Philip chose to make this into a full book rather than a novella because, as with its two predecessors, it was incredible! We pick up from where Alex was arrested in 2024 and follow him through into the new year in prison, with alternating chapters throughout providing insight into his childhood.
The ability to write a series that keeps you hooked and only gets better is a special one, and Philip Anthony Smith does this with ease. Dark, twisted and uncomfortably emotional, Becoming Benjamin is an all encompassing read that weaves a deeper understanding into the series and its characters.
The plot’s timelines were seamless, with Alex’s upbringing offering haunting glimpses into childhood secrets, while the present storyline is filled with tense moments linking to the first two books. Both timelines are compelling, but together they create a complex narrative that is impossible to put down; and as always with Philip’s books, I stayed up late to finish it!
I already can’t wait to read the final book in this series - the devil works hard, but Philip Anthony Smith sure works harder!
Thank you so much to Philip Anthony Smith for sending me this advanced copy of Becoming Benjamin to read and review. My opinions are my own.
I've enjoyed following Philip's writing from the start. I always find it captivating and engaging, with a nice, seamless flow. I finished this one within two days and felt my mind pondering over the events for some time afterward. It's always a good sign when a book resonates with you.
This is a very unique and gripping plot. It was multi-layered, with graphic events. The descriptive technique in this tale was riveting and atmospheric. Everything came to life; I could picture the prison and hear the sounds within.
This story has a sole focus on Benjamin/Alex and his harrowing tale. I'm pleased this one came away from Olivia, as I feel this character had so much more to give, creating an extremely powerful tale. Although this is book three of the series, it is formidable enough to be read as a standalone.
There was a lot of information within this novel that linked to the previous books and provided me with information that I didn't realise was missing. It was full of twists that really took me by surprise and made the whole experience a truly eye-opening one. The development of this character was astounding.
This novel was intricately told between various timelines, looking at past and present. Philip tackles some dark and intense themes within this story. It was very compelling but intensely disturbing. It vehemently evaluates nature versus nurture.
I feel that the topics were handled with care, but some may find them distressing.
I was kindly sent the Arc of The third book in 'The Forgotten Bride' series, written by @philipsmithfiction I would recommend reading the previous two books in the series as this is not a stand-alone book.
Oh Alex (aka Benjamin), you unhinged, sadistic... yet comedic character 😅
This book has mentally scarred me, and I genuinely couldn't help but want to give Alex a hug. (I am NOT a hugging kind of person), so that says a lot! 🤣 Maybe I'm slightly unhinged myself... who knows 🤷🏻♀️
@philipsmithfiction has done it again with this book! The sinister secrets and dark twits had me glued, and my frowny face was in full frown mode throughout the book!
I had moments of feeling slightly sorry for Alex, and then that was quickly taken away with feelings of... Mate, you're really fuc#%d up! 😂
Thank you so much for letting me read yet another of your fantastically written books 📖
📚 Officially released on the 30th March 2025 🥳
📖 Born into a legacy of control and cruelty, Benjamin was never given a choice in the man he would become.
His father, a master manipulator and predator, made sure of that. Every lesson drilled into him, every punishment endured, was designed to sharpen him into something ruthless—something incapable of weakness. Emotion was irrelevant. Compassion was a liability. Power was the only thing that mattered.
When Philip Anthony Smith announced the impending release of the third instalment in his ‘Forgotten Bride’ series, a wave of excitement washed over me. The offer of an ARC sent my enthusiasm soaring to new heights!
‘Becoming Benjamin’ is an absolutely wild ride, a captivating journey into the origins of a complex character, a gripping narrative that unravels Benjamins past and present.
Smith masterfully delves into the dark undercurrents of Benjamin's upbringing, illustrating how his formative years, steeped in darkness and hardship, forged him into the animalistic figure he is now.
Each chapter drew me deeper into the narrative and left me craving for more. From the very first page, I was completely enthralled, unable to tear myself away!
The story is dark, twisted and brilliantly executed and the final, unexpected twist truly left me reeling.
Phillip Anthony Smith’s imagination and his exceptional storytelling ability has once again delivered a book that will keep you gripped late into the night.
This is not a standalone and you should read The Forgotten Bride and The Brides Revenge first.
Thank you so much, Phil, for allowing me the privilege of reading an ARC of your truly brilliant book.
This book is so brilliantly told. It runs concurrently to the events of book 2, but told from Alex’s POV, and seeing this from the other side - the side of the bad guy - is just awesome.
Told in dual timelines, firstly from Alex’s arrest at the end of book 2, and then from Alex’s life as a young boy throughout the events of his life catching up with the present. It’s so clever the way @philipsmithfiction writes this book, as I had such strong and conflicting feelings from chapter to chapter. In the past chapters I have such sorrow and sympathy and my heart aches for the young boy he was forced to be, yet instantly changes to hatred and disgust at who he became, and even that then all gets muddled together.
These books are wonderfully dark, humorous, so well told, come together perfectly and are very clever - just when you think you know what’s going on or think you’ve figured it out, the rug gets ripped out from underneath you and that’s what I love about these books - that twist? *CHEFS KISS*
This book added so much more to the series that I didn’t know we needed until we had it. I love knowing why crazy people become crazy so this did everything for me, I looooved exploring the darkness of Alex.
I genuinely have SO MUCH FUN and get swept up in the excitement when reading these books, I have loved this series and I am SO ready for the finale.
As with every other time, I’m incredibly grateful to the author that I get to experience these books before release.
I'm really enjoying this series, they all intertwine, have multiple POV's and year timezones. I like the prison setting in this one, you get down to the nitty gritty of prison life, how you are either hidden in the background and forgotten by the inmates or at the forefront and have power over others.
This book focuses on Alex, as we delve into his childhood and growing up, you see how he becomes the adult he is today. How his mind works and how he plays out his actions.
I like how the different POV's tell us of the individuals thought processes and actions. I'm interested in all the characters in the series, they are worth knowing and you can tell there is a dodgy side to proceedings but unsure how they all play their part but all is explained, or is it?!
This series cannot be read as standalones so definitely read in order but you get a real sense of the people and their mental state at the time.
Another addictive, fast-paced, villain's POV, psychological thriller that pulls you in from the get-go!!
When I seen that we were getting an insight into the life of Alex, I was so unbelievably excited!! I will say that I absolutely do recommend reading the first and second book in the series as they are all connected!
In the third instalment in 'The Forgotten Bride' series, we get Alex's story. Alex is a huge character in the series and it was great getting an insight into his past, present and now future life. We get an insight into what has made him the man he is today (And it is a roller coaster btw) I was sad, angry, happy, upset and some times down right raging!! This series does have a sensitive topic (Child trafficking) which some people will find distressing! I am praying the last book puts an end to that to be honest!!
If you love psychological thrillers then Philip Anthony Smith is your man! I recommend him whenever and wherever I can!
Another easy 5 star from one of my favourite authors!
- Fantastic prologue as always! - Great descriptive writing - Loved learning more about Alex’ upbringing and past - Twist that gave me goosebumps!
I’ve really enjoyed this book series so far! (Definitely read them in order, as you won’t understand the story otherwise). The ending of each book always leaves me wanting more. 😍 Plus the ending of this one has really got me excited for the final book coming in May! It will be sad when it’s over but I’m sure Phil has other books up his sleeve! 🤞
Once again a massive thank you to Phil for the ARC copy! Out 30th March.
If I could give this book more than five stars, I would it’s even better than the first two and that’s saying something. The links and connections between characters and scenes in this book are absolutely phenomenal. The idea is that I’ve gone into this book outstanding and the work of a pure genius. I cannot wait to find out where the next book is heading I’ve got a few slight ideas but could be wrong as the way Phil writes is breathtakingly unique. I actually felt really sorry for Benjamin! Thank you for allowing me to be part of the ARC team for this work of art!
The back story and the other half of the story that I didn’t think I needed. Brings you into the depths of the darkness that is Alex. I would class this as book 2.5 ( it was meant to be a novella, but someone got carried away 👀). Definitely not a standalone, you need to read book 1 and 2 for any of it to make sense. Dual timeline of Alex when he was younger and the current day which runs alongside book 2. This helped to fill in some of the gaps that book 2 left me with, including a twist that I found rather disturbing!
Absolutely smashed it out of the park Philip! Yet another amazing story written by my favourite author.
This was very different to the first and second book as we go through Alex’s POV this time instead of Olivia and Aurora’s. Becoming Benjamin does tie in with events from the first two books but I don’t think you need to read them in order. I really enjoyed reading Alex’s side of the story, felt a bit sorry for his character in a way as all he wanted was to be loved. Just knowing about his past and how he grew up to become who he is now was incredible. I could not stop reading, it was the fastest I have finished a book! This book is the third instalment to The Forgotten Bride series and it’s the best series I have read. Highly recommend if you want jaw dropping moments.
The book was well detailed, fast paced and a capturing story with a sprinkle of twists! Thank you so much for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Another jaw dropping thriller from Philip Anthony Smith! This is the third book in the Forgotten Bride series, and it’s just as outstanding as the first two!! It was so cool to read the story from another characters point of view. A thriller filled with secrets, revenge and twists!!! If you haven’t started this series yet, you should do so soon!! Also, Philip Anthony Smith, I noticed on goodreads a 4th one coming in May, so excited!!!
This is the third book in The Forgotten Bride series. Here we follow Alex who, now locked away in prison, reflects on his life from a very young boy being manipulated by his controlling father, to the man (or psychopath) he is today. This book had me gripped right from the start, as did the previous two in this series, but this one seemed to have more wow factor, if that's possible.
Thank you to Philip for an ARC in return for my honest review
A fantastic psychological thriller that gets you sympathising with the series’ antagonist! 😍
Smith has gone and captured our attention once again in this third instalment of the indelible The Forgotten Bride series and I really loved the unique perspective compared to the previous books. I would definitely read the books in order and if you haven’t read them yet, you may not want to read the rest of this review as I talk about the culprit. ⚠️
I loved how this book flashed back to book one and revealed the subsequent events from the perspective of Alex. I don’t know how Smith has executed it, but to have me liking Alex more than Olivia in this book was extraordinarily clever.
Scaffolded upon nature vs nuture, I loved reading the chapters from Alex’s childhood. What really shaped him could be argued between his traumatic upbringing or just who he is, and I liked this exploration.
Some of the jail chapters were tense and I was horrified at what went on in there. I loved how Alex persevered through though. Oh did I hate Alex’s father too!!
I guessed the first big twist and then I guessed the next big twist, NOTTTT! Just when I thought I’d sussed it all out, WALLOP, Smith hits you with another unimaginable twist that was very very clever!
This book was an amazing addition to the series and sets up for the fourth book perfectly. Hurry up and write it Phil!!
A huge thank you to @philipsmithfiction for this ARC of Becoming Benjamin that was published yesterday! 🥳
A massive thank you to @philipsmithfiction for having me on his ARC street team. I have been looking to read every book that Phil has written.
I really enjoy Phil's style of writing. It's easy to read, flows well, and pulls you in. I think this was my favourite book of the series. I liked the flitting between 'Benjamin's' childhood and the present day. I also enjoyed reading a story from the villains POV
*******Spoilers below if you haven't read the first two books*******
'Some monsters aren't born, they are made'
This is the book I didn't know I needed. Written from the villains POV, the story follows Alex who is currently is prison. Written as a dual timeline we are taken back to Alex's childhood and follows his upbringing, along side current day. An upbringing that makes you feel sorry for the antagonist but also gives you insight into why he is, the way he is.
Did I mention that the book has a rather big twist.....that I did not see coming but you'll have to read this book to find out.
Fast paced, gripping and great descriptive writing.
This is the third book in the forgotten bride series, I recommend reading book one and two first in order to understand this story.
Book 3 of 4 - you’ll need to read the books in order to follow the back story.
The character of Alex really came out, with lots of throwbacks to his childhood including the love and protection from his Mum, and the complicated relationship with his Dad. So much to unpack with this book and it will make you desperate to start reading the final instalment of the Alex/Olivia/Nathaniel story. Suffice to say it’s no fairytale, and there’s a shocking twist on a twist which I absolutely did not see coming. Thank you again @philipsmithfiction for the ARC!
This is the 3rd book of this series and I cant wait to start the next one ... this one has definitely kept me on my toes and the way the book is written is brilliant 👏 x definitely recommend 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
I just finished reading Becoming Benjamin by Philip Anthony Smith! Wow! My mind is knotted up with all the twists and turns. It is the third book in a series. You’ll have to read the other two books to understand this one.
It really helped me to learn about Benjamin’s childhood and upbringing. It made me have some sympathy for him that I would not have had if I didn’t read this book. It was brilliant to read scenes that were in book two from Benjamin’s perspective. It made the story as a whole more believable and compelling.
Philip Anthony Smith never disappoints with his novels! The psychological elements in his books are my favorite. The characters’ motivations, desires, fears and thoughts are expertly woven throughout the narrative. The characters feel like real people.
I’m going to be thinking about this novel for a long time!
Many thanks as always to Philip for having me on your Arc team.
I’m shouting it from the rooftops if you haven’t read this series then you really are missing out on what is one of the best series I’ve read in a long long time, and this the 3rd book in the Forgotten Bride series is a real page turner. This time, we uncover and understand bit by bit just what and who has contributed in making Benjamin what he is now. A captivating and, at times, shocking read that draws you in and keeps you hooked until the brilliant twist at the end, leading us nicely into the next instalment in the series. A solid psychological read. I would recommend you read The Forgotten Bride and The Bride’s Revenge first. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
I was sent an arc of the latest book released by @philipsmithfiction
I found this one to have a very individual plot and i was gripped. I have enjoyed following Philips writing from the beginning, i always find that they flow seamlessly and are very intriguing. I stayed up way passed my bedtime to finish this one as i just had to know how it ended. It was told over a past and present timeline, this was easy to keep on track with. There were some topics within this story that can be very frightening but they have been handled with perfection.
I loved that this one was written from the killers point of view, it was very eye opening to hear about his sordid past and the horrible events he had to endure throughout his childhood. This is book three of the series but i enjoyed that we came away from Olivia and her life as it made a nice change and felt there was a a lot more to gain from this character. This one could easily be read as a stand alone.
As i was reading this, i was realising it was providing me with the answers I didn’t even know i was looking for from the previous books. I found it to be very clever the way Philip was able to tie them all together without you having no idea what he was on about. The twists just kept on coming each one taking me by surprise. I now feel that Benjamin/Alex has become a superior character and it was thrilling.
Thankyou to Philip for sending me the advanced copy of this novel.
Firstly a massive thank you to Phil for having me as one of his ARC readers for this 3rd instalment in the ‘Forgotten Bride Series’. As this is the 3rd Instalment it should NOT be read as a standalone 🖤
Now,
WOW.. what a ride … my favourite in the series so far …
I have never read a book from the ‘Villains pov’ and I absolutely loved it! Having ‘Benjamin’s’ story unfold from childhood to present events had me hooked from the first few chapters and is filled with so many twists and turns … I finished this in 24 hours! I could not put it down.
Seriously if you are a fan of psychological thrillers with subtle hints of horror then I BEG you to pick up this series, Phil’s work is phenomenal and you seriously won’t regret it …
Another 5 ⭐️ read from Phil and this series.
I am SO GLAD you chose to write this as a novel over a novella because THAT TWIST. 👏🏻
