Buckshot: A Classic Western Adventure

In the untamed frontier, a single shot can change everything—but for Buck Reed, it takes a lifetime of buckshot to escape his past.

In 1885, Buck rides into Dodd City, Texas, ready to leave behind the bloodshed and chaos of his gunslinging days. After decades of living by the gun, he dreams of peace on the land he’s claimed as his own. But peace doesn’t come easy for a man with a reputation. Squatters take over his property, a ruthless rancher seeks to drive him out, and hotheaded young gunfighters are eager to make their mark by taking him down.

With his back against the wall, Buck must face the hard the fight for survival doesn’t end when the shooting stops. As the line between redemption and violence fades, he’s forced to decide if he can lay down his gun—or if the only way to protect his future is to unleash the fury of his past.

Buckshot is a gritty, action-packed standalone novel perfect for fans of Western showdowns, frontier resilience, and stories where every choice is a shot at redemption. Make your choice and grab your copy today!

Retirement sounds peaceful—unless you're Buckshot, dodging bullets and battling squatters for his!

Monty R. Garner's Buckshot delivers a gritty and action-packed Western adventure set in the untamed frontier of 1885. The story follows Buck Reed, a former gunslinger seeking peace on the land he's claimed as his own in Dodd City, Texas. However, his dreams of a quiet life are shattered when he finds that squatters have invaded his property, a ruthless rancher targets him, and ambitious young gunfighters aim to make their mark by challenging his reputation. As Buck confronts these threats, he must grapple with the harsh reality that survival often demands a return to the violence he hoped to leave behind. The novel masterfully captures the tension between redemption and the unrelenting pull of a violent past.

Through vivid storytelling and richly drawn characters, Buckshot explores themes of resilience, justice, and the cost of freedom. Garner's meticulous attention to historical detail immerses readers in the rugged landscape of the Old West, where every decision carries life-or-death consequences. As Buck faces mounting challenges, the line between right and wrong blurs, forcing him to confront his own moral compass. This standalone novel is a compelling tale of frontier survival and redemption, perfect for fans of classic Westerns and stories of personal transformation. This is the first book of Mr Garner's I have read, but it won't be the last. When I started this book, I at first thought it must have been aimed towards a Junior High School audience because it was a very simple story.

I was wrong.

It is a simple story, but it is written as if you were sitting on the porch at the front of your house, sipping some cold lemonade, listening to a new friend tell you about himself. He has lived an interesting life.

I recommend this book to you. I'm going to get another to read next.

A Day in the Life of a Hired Gun

The old man in retirement can still slick a gun and eliminate the bad guys. This is the tale of a retired gun slick who tries to put the bad times behind him, and focus on his ranch, cattle, lady friend and newly discovered adult daughter and grandson. I successfully skipped the many pages scattered through the book which were flashbacks to his participation in the bloody War of Yankee Aggression. All of the references to the Civil War could have been omitted because they contributed absolutely nothing to the storyline.

I loved this story. Buck Reed, an aging former hired gunman, retired to his house and property in Dodd City, Texas. He had problems to overcome like squatters to move off his land, young gunslingers who wanted the pride of being the gun who out drew Buck and his reputation to overcome. But most of all he was trying to live with the aches and pains of his older years. Any of us who have back and knee problems know the pain of sitting too long and needing something to hold onto until your knees become mobil again. It is just a good solid read.

Satisfying

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The pacing of the story kept me up all night. Lots to think about ... Personal redemption. Feared gunslinger seeks to restore his life by making amends for his wrongful past, ultimately becoming the man he was meant to be and finding peace and contentment . Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

This is one that should be a #10!

What a book! The way this book was told I felt like I was sitting at the ranch kitchen table while my grandfather told his stories about his and his dads life before coming to California. Brilliant writing!

A gunslinger who turned his life around

Buckshot's determination to make his life a good honest person. He displayed lots of serious need for revenge despite his age and his kindness and desire to help those in need. His shooting was his best attribute.

A Long Ride to find Peace After the War

Such a pleasant read!

Buckshot lives a life of heartbreak to find himself in the Civil War…lost & without a purpose other than to stay alive.

I liked the story, classic western vibes. It was a little repetitive and had more of a “tell, don’t show” writing style though.
