This book made so so happy. ♡
It’s been nine month since I left this series with Will still being only an addition to Hugh’s and Truman’s relationship (the tag-along lay, as he calls himself) and him otherwise, more or less, going on with his own life, relationships and heartbreak while occasionally joining the boyfriends in their life and bed and doing scenes, mostly orchestrated by Hugh.
It’s good to be back. I love it here with them. Even after six years of them having this unusual dynamic with each other this book was again a wild ride and a fascinating mind-fuck.
I wouldn’t even call this a romance at all. It’s more like a fascinating study of all kinds of different relationships people have —romantically, sexually. And nothing is ever just vanilla in here. (The author even shuts the door in our faces whenever there is simple lovemaking involved *lol fucking frustrating.)
So the boyfriends are going to get married, Will as the best man is planning the whole thing and Molly, his ex-girlfriend, is back in the picture. I loved being in her POV as much as in Will’s throughout this episode. I loved seeing the strong and deep connection between her and Will —as if they hadn’t broken up one and a half years ago. And I loved that she had the acceptance of the boyfriends as part of Will’s life, also kind of as being a part of theirs, too. And vice versa.
I loved seeing how much the boyfriends (husbands?) love Will and how much he loves them. And I freaking loved the symbolic gesture with the cuffs Hugh and Truman gave Will as a wedding gift so so much!! *crying like a baby
I guess this is my favorite book in the series yet!
side note: As we are accompanying these people through life, relationships and kink over the span of many years and also in hindsight of my own experiences with the series, I wouldn’t recommend binge-reading these books. They hit different when you leave a little time between them.

Gahhhh my heart is a pile of goo. Reading this was the next best thing to getting to go to Truman and Hugh’s wedding in person. Technically, it’s only Truman and Hugh getting married but Will is just as much a part of the wedding and their marriage. I loved how much reassurance and affirmation they provided Will, right down to the beautiful leather cuffs. Will doesn’t completely buy it yet, right down to saying he wants to marry a woman and he’s not sure he’s polyamorous, which I had no idea he still believed. But he can’t imagine not having Truman and Hugh in his life either. We’re getting much closer to a true triad and I can’t wait to see how it comes together.
That said, this wasn't a complete home run for me. I really struggled with Truman’s family. Why did he invite his horrible parents and brother? I will never understand inviting relatives out of obligation and then complaining about them and doing your best not to spend time with them. At the very least, they should have kicked Brian out. He was inappropriate and offensive and I was desperate for him to face natural consequences from someone, anyone.
There were a few other missteps. We finally dig into Truman’s body insecurities and it’s anti-fat bias all the way down. Characters speculate about Molly’s roommate Alex’s sexuality, even though he says he’s straight. This did not sit comfortably with me. Maybe he’s not completely hetero; that’s for him to figure out and express if and when he’s comfortable. Whatever gender or sexuality someone says they are, believe them. That should be all the more true in the SMU world.
Characters: Will is a 27 year old white submissive who works at a radio station. Molly is a 27 year old Black researcher and Domme with a pierced nipple. Hugh is a 35 year old gay white therapist, switch, and former escort who wears glasses. Truman is a 39 year old gay white therapist. Hugh and Truman have been together five years. Will and Hugh have known each other 6 years. Molly, Hugh and Truman are polyamorous; Will is polyam but doesn’t quite identify that way yet. This is set in Santa Barbara and Oakland, CA.

Of all the beautiful, emotional moments in The Boyfriends Tie the Knot, the part where Eddie asks Will to dance is the one that makes me cry every. Damn. Time. "Nobody will ever take me for dominant."

Oops! I was so caught up in these books that I couldn't be bothered to stop long enough to write reviews!
Anyway. Really liked this one. I like that Molly is back because I like her and I think she's good for Will. I just really love how Ripper writes these relationships and how they've found these people to be with who work so well together and completely support each other.
This one definitely had the most homophobia in it of any of the books (that's I've read); Truman's brother Brian is pretty much the worst person ever. Like, THE WORST. He was introduced briefly in one of the other books, but we don't really get to see how truly horrible he is until this one. Truman's parents are also bad, but at least they are more or less in the background for the whole book, whereas Brian is front and centre for parts and I just want to punch him in his homophobic face.
Despite the homophobia there was still so much to love in this book. I mean, the boyfriends get married! And they include Will in every part of it and that was so special, despite Will not really understanding what was happening. Also, I really like the covers of these books and I LOVE the little addition that starts on this one and continues for the rest of the series. So good.

I would say this is my favorite of the series so far, except it wouldn’t mean nearly as much without the foundation of the ones before it. I’ve even been enthusing about these books to my (long-suffering) husband, going on and on about how amazing it is that these characters all learn and grow and change, make mistakes and hard choices, open up and communicate, and just generally feel like REAL PEOPLE to me. It’s been especially amazing watching Will’s journey as he comes into his own, both in his confidence in himself and what he needs, and where he fits into Hugh and Truman’s lives. I just adore these books!

So, like, I thought the last book was good, but WOW, this series has officially peaked now. It can't possibly get better than this. This book fed me absolutely everything I wanted, and I am losing my whole entire mind about it. Like, fuck. 5 million stars.

Just lovely all the way around (except for a Truman’s dickhead family.) The boyfriends say their vows and Will (and Molly!) are included in all the ways. A most satisfying close to this portion. But there’s more to come, yay.

I binge read all the Scientific Method books over a week, and find they all blend together in my mind. Hugh, Truman and Will and their relationship evolves over the series, and I think this might be where it starts for real, although it is a gradual thing. I really loved this series. They feel very kinky, but also very emotional. Most of the characters are themselves, and kinky and queer in a way that I wish I was, because it sounds like so much fun.
There are nine [now eight] books in this series, not all are on Goodreads [well, they are now].
The Boyfriends Tie the Knot (#7) - this was one of the most emotionals of the books. The boyfriends get married, and Will is the Best man.
The Honeymoon (#8) - On the last four days of the honeymoon, Will is the gift.
Extremes (#9) - This book has the most intense play of the nine in the series.
Kris Ripper also has many extras on zir web site, which I would definitely recommend if you like the books.
Also friendship. Also hot sex.

I'm not sure I will ever get tired of these guys. There is just the right amount of everything - story progression, character development, scenes of them together that still all seem new and beyond hot. This segment is about the guys getting married. Will planned the wedding, but he learns he is so much more than the boyfriends' best man. I absolutely love the three of them together. There is some tension with the appearance of family members, but they all work through it in ways that have always worked for them. I can't wait for the honeymoon!

Feels weird to give this three stars because I would far rather read this than 98% of the other romances I give three stars, but held against my high standard for this series, it turns out I just "liked" this one. What, not the wedding book?! you say. I know, I know. But I felt like the conflict was a bit tilted toward wedding chaos and managing Will's extremely emotional emotions, rather than true conflict leading to character change or story development.
What I liked best about this book was the opportunity for Molly to make a reappearance. I gather from reviews she's a controversial character, but I always liked her for Will, and liked her generally. The first half of the book is the two of them dancing around the fact that they really want to get back together, and the wedding is the perfect excuse for it (with a little helpful pushing from the boyfriends). Molly's arc is basically just giving herself permission to take those few steps back to Will, and that means getting in a little deeper with his relationship with Hugh & Truman.
Even though those two are getting married, and arguably should be under the most amount of stress, Hugh & Truman felt very solid in this entry. Like they had a plan, and were just executing on the plan. The wedding is a great excuse to bring all the characters back together, and honestly I started getting the tiniest bit confused? Like, who's this Bernie guy with Nick? When did Lucy full-on get her triad together? I'm not sure if I should know these things from previous books, or they are actually explained in the novellas/shorts in The Scientific Method universe I haven't gotten to yet.
Of course you can't have a wedding without family members being total dicks; in this book that "honor" goes to Truman's brother and - surprisingly, Will's older brother (not his twin, Ads, the other one). Will bears the brunt of this rudeness, but no one really calls the family members out on their behavior - they are just ignored in favor of consoling Will. That's actually pretty realistic to how something like that might go down in real life, but I was weirdly disappointed the bad family members got away with it.
My biggest complaint is that I think Ripper was trying to edge the boyfriends + Will closer to triad-land, which is apparent in some of the things Hugh & Truman say, and gifts they give Will, but can't they just come out and say the damn thing? Will is pretty obtuse, but at a certain point he can't be blamed for keeping his role separate.
However, I'm lucky that this is a series - because those developments still could come. I repeat, I still liked this entry! Because quibbles aside, there's nothing else I've found like the world / family that Ripper has created, and I'm grateful.

So much going on in this book and it's all just fabulous.
The biggest thing, of course, is Will finally figuring out that he is not just the "tag-along lay" or any of the other things he's been telling himself, but in fact is in a romantic and committed - but not exclusive - relationship with Hugh and Truman. And that, in a non-traditional way, he is, in fact, one of the boyfriends tying the knot. The shift from "the boyfriends" to "my boyfriends" is a significant one and has been a long time coming.
Will's "oh, I'm POLY" revelation is only part of it though. There's also the delightful rekindling of Will and Molly's relationship. Sometimes you have to leave and come back for a relationship to work. Will and Molly both needed to be different people - older, more confident in their skin and their sexuality - for a relationship between them to work long-term, and I'm really glad they got there.
And, of course, there's Truman's appalling family, his horrible, offensive brother and his parents, who are just as bad, just quieter about it, and all the anger and shame and insecurity they bring out in Truman. "They fuck you up your mom and dad//they may not mean to but they do". Except I suspect Truman's parents totally meant to.
And Will's feelings about being at least nominally closeted in front of them, and how that lets Brian get to him in ways he can't fight back.
The one storyline that felt unresolved was Will's relationship with his brother Jeremy, and Jeremy's terrible reaction to discovering Will's relationship with Hugh and Truman. I'd like to see that confrontation go somewhere.

The drama in this one was a little hard to bear, and felt super unnecessary as well. I get wanting to have your family at your wedding, but curses, their presence is not worth ruining everyone else's positive experience of the entire event! They didn't want to be there, then that's for the best really. Like 90% of the drama was just family members being, often purposely, horrible. Ugh. It's irresponsible to invite someone who is going to go around bullying and making the rest of your guests miserable. FFS. The steam felt kind of one-note as well (power play, discipline, commands, impact play, role playing, all seemed to take a back seat to just like anal stretching... =/). And lastly, Will's insecurity in his place in their relationship became kind of tiring. A couple times he started to seem like he got it, and I mean, it has been like 6 years!, but then the next moment he was back to 'who me? I'm nothing.' *eyeroll, sigh*. I would have expected to really enjoy the one with the boyfriends marrying, but this is actually my least favorite so far. I still like this cast of characters and am happy to try the next book though.

This book… this BOOK!!
This book is the big payoff with cream and a cherry on top for everything that didn’t work for me in the books before. I called Kris Ripper a genius at building up to a scene and at that time I meant the sex scenes. Now I realize, this works in more than one way. Because all the books and their little additions, the whole Will-Hugh-Tru story, every up and down and left and right so far has been one gigantic buildup to this book where everything came together so perfectly I wanted to weep. And literally did at the end.
And I don’t even like people getting married in books. But this was just perfect. The whole SMU story from the beginning til here is so damned clever and nuanced and unique. It’s not exactly a comfort read and it’s not perfect but what is in life.
I can’t wait to read the series a second time to find thousands of little details I’ve missed so far.
I was so worried during the last book about where everything was going to go, and as usual Kris Ripper doesn’t exactly give us what we wanted. But it just WORKED. Maybe not in a way you expect it to, but it does.
Even Molly just FITS at this point! I can’t believe I’m saying that! And even if it’s “just” the boyfriends marrying, finally the three of them dropped all pretense (along with everybody else) and just let it show what they are to each other. Well. Maybe not all pretense. Up to a point. More than before.

On a side note: The only flaw in these books for me is the way Kris Ripper sometimes squeezes in some “lectures” (about gender in Roller Coaster, race and religion in Surrender the Past, the baby topic in this). All of them interesting and worth talking about, yes, but the way they’re handled always feels random and out of place to me and I don’t really know what point they’re trying to make. What’s up with that? Anybody feel the same? But oh what the hell.

This book is the big payoff with cream and a cherry on top for everything that didn’t work for me in the books before. I called Kris Ripper a genius at building up to a scene and at that time I meant the sex scenes. Now I realize, this works in more than one way. Because all the books and their little additions, the whole Will-Hugh-Tru story, every up and down and left and right so far has been one gigantic buildup to this book where everything came together so perfectly I wanted to weep. And literally did at the end.
And I don’t even like people getting married in books. But this was just perfect. The whole SMU story from the beginning til here is so damned clever and nuanced and unique. It’s not exactly a comfort read and it’s not perfect but what is in life.
I can’t wait to read the series a second time to find thousands of little details I’ve missed so far.
I was so worried during the last book about where everything was going to go, and as usual Kris Ripper doesn’t exactly give us what we wanted. But it just WORKED. Maybe not in a way you expect it to, but it does.
Even Molly just FITS at this point! I can’t believe I’m saying that! And even if it’s “just” the boyfriends marrying, finally the three of them dropped all pretense (along with everybody else) and just let it show what they are to each other. Well. Maybe not all pretense. Up to a point. More than before.

It was wonderful to finally see Hugh and Truman get married. Both men were so good to Will, making sure that he knew he was most definitely still part of their relationship. They did many things that included Will in their big day. Will was so emotional and excited. The wedding was wonderful.
I took off a star because of Truman's family. I don't get it. Why invite a bunch of people to your wedding when they don't want to be there and are against it all? They were so rude and dismissive. Truman's brother was a complete asshole. I had to skim through some of the parts with them in it because it infuriated me to read about them.
A couple of books back, when Molly and Will broke up, I was glad. Mainly because I just wanted it to be Hugh, Truman and Will. However, Molly is back and I was happy to see her. I had a hard time at the start. I don't really know why or I think I know I just finished to read heated rivalry lol.
But after some time, I finally feel the story. I didn't know that Molly would make a come back and be involved again in the gang. I don't know what to feel about it because I really thought it was the end. And her come back feels random. I mean she was not there and then she is. They didn't really talk about their breakup and the way that it happened in the book where the boyfriends are getting married didn't feel right.
Because I wanted the boyfriends at the center. So I don't really understand what the author tried to do with Molly in this book.
I still loved this. I still loved the characters (Molly included), the gang, the emotions, the sex scenes qnd everything. But just the plot here didn't feel right this time.

There are some super solid emotional moments in here, not to mention sex scenes, making it a fine addition to the series. Many of the scenes had four people instead of the usual three, though, and there were times I'd forget whose head I was in. Would have been closer to 3.5 stars but Becca's heart to heart with Lucy felt entirely out of place and took me waaaay out of the story. You couldn't tear me away from these people, though - of course I'm reading on.

I LOVE WEDDINGS!! And apparently I extra love weddings that involve a lot of gratuitous poly shenanigans and families of choice coming together to tease each other lovingly and also to throw out unsupportive family members by birth with their sharp tongues and big strong gay arms!!

So, Kris Ripper, you know the sex is SO hot and the emotions are deep. But this is marriage and the scene with Ian the Priest and the 3 MCs is one of the best explorations of unconventional relationships I’ve ever come across.

I feel incapable of saying anything intelligent about any of the books in this series, they just blow me away. Gods, the intimacy.

Although this series started out as more of a type of instructional fiction mixed with porny bits, over time the relationship between the three men has taken center stage. The heart of this book is that relationship. And it is beautiful as well as deeply meaningful.
Molly, Will's ex, plays a bigger role than before, now as an enabler and viewer close to the inner circle. (Adam, Lucy and Jason and their lovers are all the next circle out.) I am not a jealous person, but I don't know how she can stand it, to be on the side watching such bonds of love to which she will never be more than a peripheral - appreciated, enjoyed, invited, but essentially peripheral. I began to feel a bit hurt on her behalf although she felt no such thing.
There are also bits of business with Truman's awful brother and silent father (who never does speak). I wish Truman had explained why these homophobic people were invited to the wedding at all. Yes, family. But when family equals pure poison, you don't invite them. This is never really examined which detracted part of a star for me.
Several characters also cross over from, I presume, the author's gym series, which is a bit of a distraction if you haven't read it. I skimmed those bits.
Still, despite the parts that didn't work for me, the central relationship was so intimate that it resonated in a way that few romances do. They may get under the skin, but this targets the marrow of your bones. I appreciated that.
