Zayne has never felt comfortable on his home world. A wanderer at heart he has travelled the galaxy, ignoring the call of not only his own people, but his given mate. When he lands on an ice planet, Zayne’s life is put in danger, and he has no choice but to call out for the mate he has never met, the mate he has avoided for so long…
Ryan, a human on New Earth, has no idea what is happening to him. A voice is whispering in his ear, calling for his help. The only way to silence that voice is to take a ship and steer it in the direction of the call. When he arrives at the ice planet and finds Zayne, Ryan knows immediately that they are meant to be together, that the voice was never just a voice, but the call of his mate…but it is going to take everything Ryan has to convince Zayne to accept him.
Can the wanderer and the human break down their barriers, and find the love they are both meant to have?

This one felt like it ended rather abruptly. I wonder if Ryan felt the pull of the mate bond because Zayne avoided it so strongly, or are humans and Voldor somehow merging in some kind of metaphysical way?
I liked that Zayne is a completely different Voldor than what we've met before in that he didn't long for a completed bond with his mate, and he wasn't already mated before he met his human. The dynamic between the two was different and exciting.
In an interesting departure from what has happened in the first three books of this series, the fourth volume features a Valor man who does not want to be mated and rejects his mate. Unheard of, you say? I'd have to agree, so far it has always been the human part of a mating group who have been anywhere from reticent to outright resistant to the idea of a bond. So I approached this book with a great deal of interest and curiosity.
Zayne is, as quite a few others in this series, a wanderer. He has good reason for leaving his home world, and a few emotional scars to explain why the last thing he wants is to be mated. But when he is stuck and his life becomes threatened, he has no choice but to call for him in the hopes of getting rescued. He may also think he is ready for he consequences, i.e., having to give in to the bond, but he is in no way prepared for the reality of how that feels or what it really means.
Ryan has been having weird dreams for years, actual nightmares for the last year or so, and thinks he is going crazy. When he finally figures out what has been causing his problems, the Valor he speaks to (mates to his friend Luca) tell him to his face what he says is impossible. The mating call only works one way. But Ryan insists, and when he is proven right, I suspect quite a few Valor will be scratching their heads as they try to adjust to a new reality.
If you like stories about men who battle fate with all they have only to have to give in at some point, if a human who challenges accepted Valor wisdom sounds interesting, and if you're looking for a read that is as hot as it is filled with suspense, then you will probably like this short novella.
Good short alien romance. This story varies from the first 3 books in the series as it has Ryan (the human) hearing the mating call and being drawn to it while Zayne (the Valdor) chooses to ignore the call until it's his last resort.
