A must read for shadowland fans. I always liked Ana, and this book not only takes over from book 2 but also goes back to other times through Ana's dreams which I loved.

Ana is a total badass, and an awesome protagonist! I can't WAIT to start CHAOS and see what happens in the EPIC conclusion to one of my favorite series of ALL TIME!!

VIGILANTE was the perfect in between book for FRACTURED & CHAOS! Plus it's told in Ana's POV. And Ana was one of my favorite characters in the first book, SANCTUM. She's the perfect example of a badass protagonist that is just hardcore awesome!!! Though in VIGILANTE, we get the more defenseless, split wide open Ana. But it was still great to see her strength and courage, but also reveal a glimpse of her weaknesses and vulnerability.
Just as the rest of this series, the writing was smooth and flowed with ease. The characters, which were only a few in this novella, were awesome and hardcore. And the plot from FRACTURED carried right into this novella perfectly. But what I really enjoyed the most was that we get to see first hand what happens to Ana after her tragedy from book one. Which was KILLING me not knowing what happened to her! It was just a great little addition to this series, and I am so glad I decided read it.
THE PLOT
After decades of service in the Dark City, Ana finally scums to her demise after Mazikin attack. As Ana was dying, she prepared herself for the worst—to be forced to reenter the Dark City as a lost soul; wandering the city unsure of who or what she is. Trapped within herself, restrained by time to search within, and battle her demons until she gets released from her mental hell. But instead, the Judge does the unthinkable, she releases Ana into the Countryside, where her paradise awaits....
As Ana enters the paradise she's dreamed about for so long, she realizes just how far from a paradise it really is. Ana was sure her old Caption and love of her life, Takeshi, would be there waiting for her with open arms. But instead, when Ana enters her so called paradise, she is more alone then she's ever been, and Takeshi is no where insight...
Now alone and free of any obligations, Ana has the opportunity to make her own decisions on what to do next. But for Ana, there's no choice. She will find the only man she's ever loved, she will bring him out of the hellish realm he is trapped in, even if she has to go to hell and back, she will free her man, or dying trying.
As Ana is preparing for her ultimate mission yet, she is unprepared for the many obstacles that arise, and the hunger driven men that try to claim her for they're own. And Ana will have to literally fight her way to the man she loves, but that's only if she makes it that far!!!
Overall, this was such a fun read the I devoured in one quick sitting. I couldn't stop reading about Ana and all of her struggles and hardships, and her desire to overcome them at any cost possible. I am so eager to read CHAOS and finish this series. But at the same time, I'm hesitant because I don't want it to end just yet!!! FRACTURED and this novella both ended on one EPIC cliffhanger that left me spinning in anticipation. So if you haven't started this series yet, you really need to, because it will BLOW you away and leave you breathless, screaming, and demanding more!!!!!!

I haven't read the other novella in this series entitled Captive, but I'm here to tell you that you absolutely should read Vigilante prior to starting Chaos. It's told from Ana's perspective and it gives you a ton of insight into her mindset going into Chaos. Otherwise, you might be a little...thrown by some of her actions at first, especially considering what you already know about her character from the previous books.
Also, you get to meet Takeshi. At least in Ana's flashbacks, anyway. And you'll get to see some seriously swoony parallels between their relationship and that of Malachi and Lela. Plus, you'll meet someone only vaguely referenced in a previous book, and things will all start making sense finally. Or at least as much sense as the will of the Judge can ever make to us mere mortals.
Vigilante is short and sweet and, in my opinion, totally necessary for full comprehension of these characters and what they mean to each other. It was free with your preorder of Chaos, but I'm not sure if that's a thing after the fact or how you can go about getting it now. :( I'll try to find out, if anyone's interested.

Okay, so I don't love series short stories, as I've said on almost every series-related short story I've reviewed. But this one actually felt like an important piece between Fractured and Chaos, so if you're on the fence, definitely take a look.
I liked Ana but wasn't particularly invested in her in Sanctum, but now I'm more anxious than ever to read Chaos. Really hoping it'll end well.

Great Short Story!
Vigilante is a short story from the Guards of the Shadowlands Series. This short story takes place during the events of Fractured but from Ana's view. She is in the countryside and realizes Takeshi is not there and still in the Mazikin realm. So Ana takes off through the wasteland to find him. If you enjoyed Sarah Fine's Guards of the Shadowlands Series then Vigilante is a must read!

Vigilante is a novella set between Fractured and Chaos in the Guards of the Shadowlands series. While the books mainly focus on Lela and Malachi, this novella is focused on Ana and takes place sometime between Sanctum, the first book in the series, and the end of Fractured, the second. Since the premise of this novella is spoilery for Sanctum, I won't be able to post a non-spoiler review. However, I can say that this novella was awesome and definitely worth a read AFTER you read Sanctum AND Fractured! The entire series is available for Kindle Unlimited subscribers, so if you are one, YOU SHOULD GO READ THIS SERIES! IT'S AWESOME!

Vigilante follows Ana after she dies in Sanctum and is released to the Countryside. Unfortunately, Takeshi is not there. While Vigilante is a pretty short novella (about 50 pages) it's completely new content that you will not get from any of the books. While Vigilante is not required before reading Chaos, I think it definitely adds something to the reading experience.
Ana is such a strong female character and it was really exciting to see her in her own story as the narrator. Additionally, the reader finally gets a look into her head, especially her memories of Takeshi. Up to this point in the series, most of the talk about Takeshi came from Malachi so getting to read about Ana's relationship him was really sweet.
Like the rest of the series, Vigilante was both well written and filled with emotional moments. However, this novella doesn't quite reach the 5 star level for me because I predicted the outcome of the story before I even started reading it and it was extremely brief. While it did the job of connecting Fractured and Chaos, I wanted a little bit more - maybe some more events before Ana crosses the desert of the Wastelands. Regardless, I really enjoyed Vigilante and highly recommend it for fans of the Guards of the Shadowlands series!

I was upset for days after finishing Fractured, book two in Sarah Fine's Guards of the Shadowlands series. It ended on a devastating cliffhanger that broke my heart to pieces. When it was announced there was a short story from Ana's perspective that could be read before the release of the final book Chaos, I was ecstatic. Ana is awesome, and I've been wondering what happened to her after the events in book one Sanctum.
Vigilante gave plenty of insight into Ana's character and had answers to questions I've been wondering about since the first book. Including more information about the other worlds that have been mentioned in the first two books and Ana's relationship with Takeshi. It also gave a glimpse as to what happened to a certain character after the end of Fractured. This story covered a lot more than I was hoping for, which made me feel so grateful, and at the same time, it left me craving for Chaos even more.

This short story follows Ana after she is released from duty as a Guard. She finds herself in the "Countryside", but the love of her life isn't there. Given this knowledge, she sets out to find him. Although her task appears insurmountable, she is resolute. She meets a fellow guard in the "Wasteland" and together they endeavour to break into the Mazikin homeland.
The flashbacks in the book were excellent in portraying the love she felt/feels for Takeshi (her former Captain), so much so that you're rooting for her from the offset. There isn't much action or worldbuilding given the scope of the story, which is why I've given the book 3 stars. Nonetheless, it was still an enjoyable read and a satisfactory stopgap before the third book.

So many times, in so many ways, Takeshi had rescued her. "I'm going to rescue you this time," she said, staring at the black city in the distance.Written from Ana's point of view, these 49 pages make up the perfect bridge between Fractured and Chaos.
She clenched her fists and took her first steps into hell.
Recommendation: If you're working your way through the series, don't skip this one just because it's a novella!

I started book 3 in this series right after reading this novella and I have to stress that it absolutely makes sense to read it. I didn't care too much for Ana in book 1. Not only do I feel much more connected to her after reading this short from her point of view, I also started to feel for her and Takeshi and understand what their relationship was all about. A short, but very enjoyable read, the novella is action packed and offers some interesting twists and turns I wouldn't wanna have missed!

What a way to get geared up for Chaos! I love this series so much. Each character has a story I'd love to read, even "just" supporting characters. The way the overlying plot weaves the back stories together so tightly and seamlessly makes the world believable and enhances the main plot, pushing the story to an "epic" status. (as in "the actual definition of the term" as opposed to "overused colloquialism that's means it's pretty cool")

Just a little story about Anna and what happened to her when she "died". This was interesting, albeit short. I am all set for book 3 to come out. It's really cool that it was free, well somewhat free.

Better than the Malachi version but still too short. I paid 99p and it really wasn't worth it, though I did enjoy the read. Anna's story at least loved the plot along, gave a fresh perspective etc. unlike Captive. I do believe Sarah Fine could have warranted a full book from both stories mind you, or at least both characters deserve their own full length books

A pretty good novella (better than the first one). I enjoyed learning more about Ana, Sascha and the Wasteland. It also made me like Takeshi more (not a big fan of him in Chaos). Overall, worth the read.

I absolutely loved this shorts story from Ana's POV. I didn't want it to end. I could've read Chaos in hers and been completely happy. I wish now Sarah to write Ana's story from the beginning.
