Sanjib Chattopadhyay (Bengali: সঞ্জীব চট্ট্যোপাধ্যায়) (born February 28, 1936 in Kolkata) is a Bengali novelist and writer of short stories. His style is characterised by use of short satirical sentences mixed with very lively language.

Childhood and education:
Sanjib Chattopadhyay spent his childhood in the hilly terrain of Chota Nagpur Plateau under the care of his father after his mother died when he was five. They relocated to Calcutta and he was admitted to Victoria Institution school which he joined at grade seven. He later went to Scottish Church College, Calcutta where he studied chemistry.

Work:
The subjects of his fiction are mostly families living in Calcutta city. Within the confines of these homes, he challenges the moral values of the fast-changing middle class of the city. Chattopadhyay frequently uses old men as his protagonists. These aged characters create the spiritual and philosophical edge found in his novels Lotakambal (The Blanket and Quilt) and Shakha Prasakha (Branches). His most famous novella Swetpatharer tebil (The Ivory Table) is an example of his characteristic style of story-telling which mixes tension, dilemma, curiosity, pity, humor, and satire. He has written fiction for children and continues to write for magazines and newspapers. Chattopdhyay current writing is related to Ramkrishna Paramhansa, Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. Apart from that his notable juvenile literature includes রুকু-সুকু, বড়মামা-মেজমামা series which are fun-filled and analyse various philosophical aspects of life through the eyes of children.

Awards:
Chattopadhyay is the recipient of the Ananda Puraskar in 1981 and the Sahitya Academy Award for his book শ্রীকৃষ্ণের শেষ কটা দিন in 2018.

দুর্দান্ত বলবো না, তবে ভালো। কয়েকটা রচনাকে অবশ্য দুর্দান্ত না বললে কম হয়ে যায়। দারুণ হিউমারে পরিপূর্ণ। আবার কয়েকটা বেশ সাধারন। দুটো জায়গা আমি কোট করতে চাই-

"স্ত্রী হল চীনেমাটির বাহারি ফুলদানি। সেই ফুলদানিতে জীবনের যতো দুঃখ সুখের ফুল সাবধানে সাজিয়ে রাখতে হয়। অফিসের বড়কর্তার সাথে ইয়ার্কি চলে। ইয়ার্কি চলে পুলিশ সার্জেন্টের সাথে। এমনকি চিড়িয়াখানায় বাঘের খাচার সামনে দাড়িয়ে চুমখুরি মারা যায়; একমাত্র ইয়ার্কি চলে না স্ত্রীর সাথে। সবসময় মন জুগিয়ে চলতে হয়। খুশ মেজাজে রাখতে হয়। দেয়াশলাই কাঠি আর খোলের সম্পর্ক বেশি ঘষলেই ফ্যাস"। (হে নারী সমাজ, আমি অট্টহাসি দিয়েছি বলিয়া আমায় ক্ষমা করো)

"সব জীবেরই একটা সমাজ আছে। বাঘের আছে। সিংহের আছে। পাখির আছে। কুকুরের আছে। সাধারন কিছু নিয়ম তারা মেনে চলে। ঝাকের পাখি, ঝাকের মাছ কদাচিৎ নিজেদের মধ্যে খেয়োখেয়ি করে। ক্যানিবলিজম নেই বললেই চলে। বাঘে বাঘ মারে না। গোয়ালে দুটো গরু পাশাপাশি বেঁধে রাখলে রাতে একটা আরেকটা কে খেয়ে ফেলে না বা গুঁতিয়ে মেরে ফেলে না। গোয়ালের দরজা খুলে মুংলী গাই প্রতিবেশির গোয়ালে ঢুকে ঝুমরী গাইকে বলেনা, চল মধুকে বাশ দিয়ে আসি।

মানুষ খুব বুদ্ধিমান প্রাণী। ভাবতে জানে, ভাবাতে জানে। সাড়া পৃথিবী তার পায়ের তলায়। আকাশের দুরপ্রান্ত তার দখলে। সুচারু চেহারা। বড় বড় দাঁত নেই। নখওয়ালা সাঙ্ঘাতিক থাবা নেই। মানুষের গ্রন্থাগারে জ্ঞান ঠাঁসা বই। মগজে জ্ঞান বিজ্ঞানের বীজ। মুখে বড় বড় কথা। প্রেম ভালোবাসা, আত্মউৎসর্গ, হীতসাধন। তবু মানুষের মতো অনিশ্চিত প্রাণী জীবজগতে আর দুটি নেই"।

"যুগ ইতিমধ্যে পালটে গেল এগলো না পেছলো বোঝা মুশকিল। ছেলেকে বললুম, 'মানুষ হও'।
সঙ্গে সঙ্গে পাল্টা প্রশ্ন তোলে, 'মানুষ হওয়া কাকে বলে? '। তোমার মত মানুষ হতে চাই না। দাঁত বের করে হাস,আর ঘাড় কাত করে থাক। জ্ঞান হওয়া তক শুনে আসছি Plain living and high thinking. প্লেন লিভিং মানে জান, যারা এয়ারো প্লেনে চড়ে।আজ লন্ডন কাল ন্যুইর্য়ক। আর হাই থিঙ্কিং হল,বোতল খানেক স্কচ খেয়ে হাই হয়ে চিন্তা করে, কার টুপি কাকে পরাবে। "

এমনই সব চিন্তায় ফেলে দেওয়া কথাবার্তায় ভর্তি পাশ বালিশ। লঘু নামের এই বইতে গুরুতর বিষয়আশয়ের আধিপত্য। এ কোন ধরনের বই? গল্প নাকী অন্যকিছু? মাত্র ৮০+ পৃষ্ঠার ছোট্ট পুস্তক। না, গল্প তো নয়। অনেকটা কলামগন্ধি ফ্লেভার আছে। হাসতে গিয়ে ভাবতে বসাচ্ছেন সঞ্জীব চট্টোপাধ্যায়। তাঁর রসবোধের তুলনা তিনি নিজেই। সমাজবিধিকে ব্যঙ্গ করবার এমন ক্ষুরধার কলমিশক্তি কম লিখিয়েরই থাকে। পাশ বালিশেই তিনি লিখলেন,

"দেশে এখন একবাদ,তারপাশে প্রতিবাদ থাকতে পারে না। বাদ মানে মাইনাস। সব বাদ। বরবাদ।"

সাইকিয়াট্রিস্ট হলে ডিপ্রেশনের রোগীদের আমি নিঃসন্দেহে সঞ্জীব চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের বই প্রেসক্রাইব করতাম। আমার বিশ্বাস, তাঁর বই যেকোন মানুষকে যেকোন মুহুর্তে হাসাতে সক্ষম। 😁 এটাও তেমনই একটা বই! তবে বইয়ের সব গল্প ভাল ছিল বললে মিথ্যে বলা হবে। যেমনঃ 'ফাবেডিরু' গল্প-টা মাথার উপর দিয়ে গেল। তবে বেশিরভাগ গল্পই ভাল ছিল

Not a good read except for first couple of stories considering the author's past works.
