Owning Vegas #1

His Kingdom

Rate this book
Louie
My mother taught me one valuable lesson that I’ve used to get to where I am today. And
where am I? Las Vegas.

Who am I? Well, that depends on who you are. To some, I’m the king. The judge, juror, and
executioner. To others, I’m just another rich asshole who owns a few casinos.

But I own more than that. I own the strip and the streets surrounding it. I own this city, and
it’ll have to be wrenched from my cold, dead hands before I hand it over to anyone else.

When I spot her, I don’t sense the desperation that wafts off the usual crowd. No, she has a
loneliness that rivals my own, a sadness that I want to soak in, and a body made to sin with.

What was that lesson my mother taught me? Trust no one. The thing is, Charlotte is taking a
wrecking ball to that lesson because every fiber of my being wants to trust this woman.

Charlotte
When you don’t want to be seen, find a crowded place and blend in.

That’s exactly why I came to Vegas. To not be seen. I figured with all the flashing lights,
alcohol, drugs, people… no one would notice me.

But he did. And I don’t know how to get him to unsee me. Or if I even want him to.

This city was supposed to be my sanctuary, a place to forget who I am. Or should I say who I
was? A place to let go of the past. A place no one would ever think to look for me.

It was supposed to be just one weekend. But now I think it might be so much more…

Oh my eyes & my precious time - what did I just read? The book started off promising, but once I realized the entire story takes place over just two weeks, it completely lost me. Everything happens within the first four days, and there’s absolutely no build-up. At one point, he says “I know you” - but bruh, you met her three days ago? What do you mean you know her??

It goes way beyond love at first sight - it’s just extreme and completely unrealistic. The whole thing felt fake, like watching kids play with Barbies and dolls. Honestly, it came across as childish and disappointing.

I seriously don’t understand how this has a 4-star average on this platform.

Dnf-ed after the first chapter.

Firstly, who tf names their son 'Louise'? But nuh uh that's not why I dnf-ed. He literally could not stop licking his own ass on the FIRST chapter. He sounded like a wannabe alpha hole with connections to the underground business and mommy issues. These are a few quotes to support my sentiment:

"I make it a habit to walk the floor every night. It’s good to be seen by my staff. It helps them maintain the fear of god. Because to them, that’s exactly who I am. Their god."

"I don’t have time to waste on bullshit. Running this city takes all of my time. Being a king isn’t for the weak—that’s for fucking sure. And in this city, Las Vegas, the city of sin, I am the king."

"When Sammie has a delivery for me at Wild Card, it usually means he’s got a bunch of women holed up in the VIP room."

"I make it a habit to walk the floor every night. It’s good to be seen by my staff. It helps them maintain the fear of god. Because to them, that’s exactly who I am. Their god."

"It’s why at least once a week, I allow myself a few hours to sink into some hot, willing pussy."

Mind you, this was my first impression of him.

And the writing, ohmygod, I never had a Wattpad phase but this is what I imagine Wattpad books were written like. And the damsel in distress FMC? PUHLEEZ WOMAN. He can't stop lusting over her and calling her a sweetheart from their first convo. The whole thing was awkward af and unbelievable and horribly written. I need a word stronger than insta lust to describe it.

“Any man who cheated on you, sweetheart, is a fucking idiot,” I say, because if I had a woman like her, no way would I stray."

You see what I'm saying? My face is permanently crinkled from all the cringing I did. And I also found out the entire book takes place in two weeks. Talk about unbelievable.

This book was amazing. I couldn‘t put it down and was grinning the whole time. It is a quick and entertaining read. Kylie Kent is most of the time a hit for me and when I‘m in the mood for her books they often are 5 star reads. Her writing style is fluent and easy to understand. The pages just flew by and I had a blast while reading.
The plot was interesting and focused mainly on Charlotte and Louie. These two are a great couple and Charlotte had this man wrapped around her finger from the beginning. They have good tension and their dialogue was relatable. I liked them together.
The side characters were likeable too and I can‘t wait for Evie & Emmanuel (hope they get a book and it comes quickly).
Overall this was an amazing and quick mafia romance.

More often than not, I found myself rolling my eyes at the cliche writing and dialogue.

“I don’t know why I fucking care, but I do”

“What kind of fucking idiot cheats on a woman like that? Like her. I can’t fathom it.”

“I’ve never seen anything more beautiful”

Louie, you just met her lol. I was so confused as to why the book was moving so fast and then I realized the number of pages.

“This woman is mine”

It’s been TWO days.

Honestly I prefer some build-up between the characters before they start confusing their insta-attraction as something much deeper. This book jumps straight to the point several times (including during the steamy scenes) and it compromises the qualities that make a good romance. Conflict is also resolved extremely quickly so you never really escape the feeling of reading a rushed book.

If you shut your brain off or this is your first dark romance, I can see this being worth at least a 2 star.

I will give an extra star however because Louie was the perfect book boyfriend — for a dark romance anyway.

His Kingdom was a good read in terms of a palate cleanser with good smut. But the story line wasn’t quite original and the characters didn’t feel developed well.

Will I continue to read this series? Probably.

Charlotte catches Louie’s attention even though he’s a self proclaimed bachelor. She’s ya know…different.

“You won my attention. It’s debatable whether or not that’s a good thing.”

Their relationship moves fast and fierce and before you know it she’s throwing herself in front of bullets for him.

“Like it or not, I found you and I plan on keeping you. And just so we’re both clear, we…” Louie points between us. “…are doing this, and we are exclusive. I don’t share.”

And they live happily ever after.

But joking aside, this was cute and short and I liked it.

If I could give this book negative stars I genuinely would no joke. I honestly DNF’d it and it was probably one of my worst reads I can ever remember. I’m gonna soften my words a little bit because I feel bad BUT to start with the issues:
- I understand fast paced books and sometimes I like them but this was not normal like in 3 days or smth they fall in love and say “I love you” what the helly!!
- It felt like reading too many plots in one book. I know side characters are good but it was basically the side characters sharing the book with the mmc and fmc likeee who’s the main show. be fr 😭
- They play truth or dare at their BIG AGE and he dares her to marry him AND she says yes and keep in mind this is still in the 1st or 2nd week of them knowing each other!!
I could write a lot more issues if I finished the book but I didn’t AND let me not forget the way the fmc and mmc conversations were actually so draining and it had no depth whatsoever.

Anyways that’s all!! Thanks for reading 🤗

“His Kingdom” is the story of Charlotte and Louie.

Pretty sweet romance in which a runaway bride meets a casino owner, and they fall in love. She is leaving a cheating fiance, and catches the attention of this “big bad” hero- who is in all fairness, very sweet and caring. It’s mostly their journey with sex, a bit of drama and happy ending.

Oh gosh, I think I finished this book in just 3 hours! That’s how addictive it was. As a mafia romance lover, this story hit all the right spots — danger, love, and just enough spice to keep things interesting!

Louise and Charlotte were brilliantly written — complex, engaging, and totally captivating. The pacing was on point, and the balance between plot and romance was exactly what youd expect from one of Kylie’s books. She never misses. 🙌

I wish the rest of the series was already out! I can't wait for other books in the series!

His Kingdom by Kylie Kent

AD PR Product [Gifted]: Thank you Kylie Kent for allowing me to read the eARC of ‘His Kingdom’ for an honest review!

His Kingdom is available now on Amazon!

Thoughts: His Kingdom is Book #1 in the Owning Vegas series. The characters were great, the tension was high, and the chemistry between the MMC & FMC kept me engaged. I ended up reading 70% of the book in one sitting—I just could not put it down! Kylie’s writing style is addictive, and the pacing was great. If you love a possessive, falls-first hero, a ‘touch her and die’ vibe, a runaway bride twist, and a broken MMC, then His Kingdom is a must-read!

Exactly what I’ve come to expect from this author- my comfort reads, complete with OTT possessive alpha growly men who fall immediately head over heels for their women usually on first sight. And typically they’re the type of men who are never planning to settle down.

Louie was no different. He comes across Charlotte in his casino and is inexplicably drawn to her. She is a runaway bride, having caught her groom to be banging her sister the night before her wedding. She says nothing to anyone, just runs off to Vegas to escape. (As an aside- she was smart enough to record them when she caught them because “no one will believe me otherwise” and I was sooo disappointed the video didn’t wind up on display at the wedding she bailed on. Total waste and missed opportunity). And their whirlwind romance ensues. In typical Kylie Kent fashion, they are inexplicably drawn to each other and things progress at lightning speed.

There’s very little angst, no OW/OM drama (though the ex fiance makes a brief appearance), and no third act break up.

My only gripe is that in the epilogue I lost my shit when she reveals she made up with her sister. WTF is that? Hard no. No one is that Pollyanna. I flat out refuse to believe that. Blood is not that important, and it sure as hell wasn’t to her sister when she banged the fiance. 🤬🤬 TBH it ruined the epilogue for me. If I ignored that it was there, the rest was great. Seriously though, who does that?

someone take me to vegas so i can marry louie guiliani because of a dare 😩🙌🏼

oh how i love kylie kent’s books !! literally every single one is a banger after banger 💥💳 thank you so much kylie for giving me the chance to arc read the first book in this new series 🥹 i absolutely ate it up omg

this is a mafia romance, run away bride + obsessed mmc, insta lust, forced proximity, cheating (not between main characters), marriage on a dare, fast paced, duo pov, and book one on interconnected standalone 🖤

OH HOW I’M SO OBSESSED WITH THESE TWO 🤭

after catching her sister and fiancé together the night before her wedding, charlotte ran away leaving everyone and everything behind. she made the last minute decision to grab a flight straight to las vegas where no one knows her and she can just be free. she just doesn’t know that she landed herself right in the middle of louie’s sights. the moment he sees her alone and looking so sad at the bar, he pounces 😮‍💨 this man becomes so entranced by charlotte and he can’t ignore the pull he feels towards her. he is the type of man who doesn’t want to get close to anyone because of what he does. the danger the surrounds him will eventually catch up to charlotte. but when charlotte’s fiancé comes looking for her and demanding she goes home, louie just had to let everyone know who she belongs to 🥰

THIS MAN !!! ugh i love him 😍 these characters are all such goofballs it’s actually the cutest thing ever !! louie’s men sammie and carlo just had me crumbling because of their humor and connection. they’re such a fun group but will also be so ride or die no questions asked. i’m so intrigued with emmanuel 👀 i feel like there’s going to be so much with his story and it’s literally BITING at me omg !! charlotte and her girl group is everything 🥹 the way they literally hopped on a plane straight to vegas !!!? ugh the cutest. this whole group is everything and more. i absolutely loved every single character !! that epilogue with everyone ?? omg 🫣 i’m so excited for more from this series !!

New to my author

This was a great read. Kept me interested. We meet Charlotte after she has run off from her wedding after seeing her fiance and sister getting it on.
It was nice that the names in this book weren't totally your usual names for this genre.
Louie is an interesting guy. And we see a little bit into his life story right off the start of the book. He's definitely JP but he also gives Charlotte freedom to be herself, grieve the change in her life and move forward. It was a right balance of steam and story. I love how he takes care of her ex with his buddies without implicating any of them. She's also got some fun friends and so does he that have the potential for their own interesting books. Will definitely look at this author again in the future.
