Es gibt Bücher, die man liest – und es gibt Bücher, die eine eigene Stimmung in den Raum bringen, sobald man sie öffnet.
Supernatural: A Compendium of Esoteric and Occult Art von Alix Paré gehört definitiv zur zweiten Kategorie.
Schon äußerlich wirkt es weniger wie ein gewöhnlicher Bildband, sondern eher wie ein sorgfältig gestaltetes Objekt: schwer, ruhig, mit einer zurückhaltenden, fast geheimnisvollen Silberprägung und einem ungewöhnlich schönen Buchschnitt. Es fühlt sich an, als hätte dieses Buch eine gewisse Präsenz, bevor man überhaupt eine Seite gelesen hat.
Inhaltlich entfaltet sich eine faszinierende Sammlung esoterischer und okkulter Kunst des 19. Jahrhunderts. Über 300 Werke führen durch eine Welt aus Geistern, Engeln, Dämonen und anderen Zwischenwesen. Die Kapitel – von Luna bis Daemones – wirken dabei fast wie Stationen einer Reise, die immer tiefer in das Unheimliche hineinführt.
Besonders gelungen finde ich die Balance zwischen Bild und Text. Die Kommentare begleiten die Werke, ohne sie vollständig zu erklären, und lassen Raum für eigene Eindrücke. Visuell ist das Buch absolut beeindruckend. Die Reproduktionen sind hochwertig und detailreich, sodass viele Werke eine intensive, beinahe greifbare Wirkung entfalten. Man bleibt an Details hängen, die man sonst vielleicht übersehen hätte.
Was dieses Buch für mich besonders macht, ist seine Atmosphäre. Es versucht nicht, das Okkulte zu vereinfachen oder zu erklären – es zeigt es einfach. Und genau das macht es so wirkungsvoll.
Ein Bildband, zu dem man immer wieder zurückkehrt – und der jedes Mal ein kleines bisschen anders wirkt.

Bello, bello e ancora bello. È una lettura molto interessante, che esplora il legame tra l’arte e il fantastico nel XVIII e XIX secolo, nonché molto affascinante per i temi trattati – si parla di esoterismo, angeli e demoni, stregoneria, sia dal punto di vista della rappresentazione artistica, sia rispetto a come erano visti all’interno della società dell'epoca.
Bellissime anche le riproduzioni delle opere d’arte. Non oso immaginare il lavoro titanico che c’è stato dietro per ottenere i diritti di pubblicazione.

Une magnifique sélection de tableaux, principalement du XIXe, abordant les représentations l'occulte et de la magie sous différents thèmes larges (sorcières, fées, démons, etc.). Les descriptifs des tableaux sont brefs, mais ils donnent envie d'en découvrir plus, et la qualité d'impression est excellente.
