Once Upon a Time-Travel #3

The Snow Queen's Captive

Rate this book
Charlotte gets more than she bargained for when her fairy godmother, Muffin, sends her into a fairy tale for a second chance at life. But instead of being the heroine...Charlotte's accidentally become the evil queen! To make matters worse, there’s a man captive in her basement. A very sexy, very angry man who also thinks Charlotte’s the bad guy.

Now she has to figure out how to save the day and get the guy. But will Kai be able to see the real Charlotte underneath it all? Can she thaw his anger and win his love before the ‘real’ heroine ices her? Will the Snow Queen get a happy ever after for once?

This novel features a captive alpha hero, a reluctant evil queen, a storyline nothing like that movie you’re all thinking of, and some creative use of ice in the bedroom.

A NOTE ABOUT FRIENDING: I will happily friend you back if you friend me! Goodreads is, after all, about discussing books we both love. I will NEVER self-promote my books to you. And if you self-promote your books to me, no matter how nicely, I'm deleting you off my list. Sorry. Goodreads is about fun, not spam.

A NOTE ABOUT MY REVIEWS: Hey, look at that! Most of my reviews are really positive! This is not me kissing ass - It's because at heart, I am a lazy reader. If I'm not enjoying a book, I don't finish it. I don't review anything I didn't finish, ergo, most of the reviews I put up here are pretty much positive across the board because I finished them and was happy with the story. Makes sense, right?

I think this was my favorite story of this series. She becomes the evil Snow Queen. How awesome is that? Not that I actually remembered that particular fairytale until I read this book but still...not a powerless female in medieval times. And, while she wasn't evil exactly, she wasn't all selflessness and sacrifice either. Or at least she took a while longer to get there like a normal person. I liked it. The level of plausibility is very low (fairytale y'all!) but Charlotte's reactions and actions were more measured and logical than I'd come to expect from these heroines and it was very pleasant to read. And, of course I liked Kai. He acted like a normal human being. Totally unexpected too. And there's an epilogue this time! I actually found out what happened afterwards. Yay!

The Snow Queen's Captive is the third book in the Once Upon a Time Travel series. It can be read as a standalone book.

As with the other books in this series, our heroine, Charlotte dies at the start of the book. (Inserting here that nitrous oxide has fewer than one death per year over the last 40 years - less than marijuana - and almost entirely from recreational use where the oxygen you need with it ran out or wasn't used at all. Guess who works in a dental office?) Muffin, and her new intern, Fifi, come to the fairy godmother rescue and sweep Charlotte into the Snow Queen fairy tale. She ends up in the wrong role, and things keep getting more and more bungled up over her month trial to succeed in her task.

Kai is the captive of the Snow Queen. She turns from cruel and abusive one day, to confused and kind the next. All while maintaining the same outward appearance. Predictably, he things it is a ruse or trap. They lack any other company and start to talk and share. Over time they like each other and gain more trust in one another. This story was a bit odd with the restrictions a human and snow queen have not being able to touch one another without physical damage. Worth a short read, but I liked others by this author more.

5/5 stars!

If the fans' theory (and by fans, I mean IPB fans) are correct and Jill Myles and Ruby Dixon are the same author, then the little nods and "things" that reminded me of Ice Planet Barbarians in this book definitely made me happy! From the usage of the word "mate" as an endearment and term for spouse to Kai's dedication and protectiveness of Charlotte just like how my favorite blue aliens took care of their mates in IPB.

Standing on its own, this book is a solid entry in this series and I loved it! The combination of Frozen and IPB vibes is so chef's kiss to me! I loved how in this book, Charlotte was placed to be the villain of the fairy tale instead of the heroine. We got to see more of the politics and machinations regarding the fairy godmother thing that's happening and how they resembles an actual corporate job instead of the preconceived notions we had of fairy godmothers. My favorite so far in the series!

“All right, then. More games. If that was what she wanted, he’d be happy to oblige.”
This was a nice and fast read.
Even if it was the third in the series, it was a stand-alone so I could read it without the rest.
It was not too bad, but the protagonist was too kind to be the cold Snow Queen. I would have liked it a to be darker, more original Snow Queen, less Charlotte. Indeed, my favorite part was the beginning when the two of them did not trust each other and it was fun to see the things from the two different perspectives.

My only real problem with the book was that the so called ‘promise’ to never speak of where she was really from, NEVER HAPPENED. I do not remember Muffin swearing Charlotte to secrecy on that front.
It was all just Snow Queen Second Chance, Oops you’re the Bad Guy and then there’s a guy in the basement. No Oath. No warning. No explanation.
That and the fact that at the end Kai wasn’t given the choice it was just sort of given to him without asking. Sure he was elated about the change, but consent and the idea should have come from him signifying it is fully HIS CHOICE.

Otherwise a fun little twist on the old Snow Queen Tale.

A reread for me. Pretty good. Snow queen retellings are just fun and so I guess I have Frozen to thank for their renaissance a few years back! My big critique is that Fifi is just fucking annoying and Charlotte, the heroine, does NOT stand up for herself often, which is frustrating to read. But perhaps not unrealistic, to be fair!

missing

wandering too far into smutty fairy tale territory with this one.
Whilst the premise of being thrust into the wicked snow Queen story as the villain was fun, it kinda limped along without much oomph.
The meeting with Kai was frankly, salacious, and that continues to be the theme.
Mostly though, it missed any real connection to the characters.

This was wonderful!

The story was intriguing, I loved all the characters, it wasn't pitiful and short like the sugar plum fairy book. This is def. A second fav. After Mermaid Knight.

Stockholm Syndrome - the book. but don't worry, it's the man that gets abused, so it's obviously okay. *insert eyeroll*
not for me.
I'll just reread The Scarecrow King over and over until I forget this story.

This was ok. I thought it was interesting to have the female be the evil queen instead of the heroine for a change but I just didn’t like her character. I just felt this was wasted potential. I did like the epilogue.

Wasn’t a fan of the overall story to this one. It was an OK read with some good bits, but I didn’t really enjoy it.

Jill Myles (along with her aliases Jessica Clare/Sims) is one of my favourite brain candy authors. She writes great little stories of lust, sex and silliness that require absolutely nothing from me when I read them. This is a Good Thing, because we all have days when we need something to pick us up and make us smile.

I’ve read most of the Once Upon a Time-Travel series, and I’ll admit it’s not my favourite of Jill’s work (Games series, hands down), and if Muffin the Fairy Godmother ever showed up in front of me I’d throw her out the window, but the idea of a reluctant evil queen convinced me. And I’m so glad it did.

Poor Charlotte, she’s just a nice girl who wants everyone else around her to be happy. Which isn’t the best basis for an Evil Queen. Yes, she’s got all these spiffy powers, but there’s only so many hours a day she can reinforce her castle walls before she gets lonely. The trouble is the only person anywhere near her is the guy she has to keep locked up for the next month if she doesn’t want to become a lost soul trapped between worlds. The fact that he’s easy on the eye is not helping, because she can’t touch him without causing pain to them both.

Oh, and Kai hates her. Because although Charlotte is the Snow Queen now, before she arrived there was a real evil queen who looked exactly like she does. And she really was evil too, so Kai’s not in a friendly mood when they first meet. Not that I blame him. I liked how he was so suspicious of her every motive at first, then confused. The way the pair of them grew closer was actually pretty cute – with x-rated moments. The fact that they couldn’t touch just added an extra frisson to their encounters.

I really liked how the story developed and twisted away from the original, thanks to Charlotte’s genuine niceness, and also how things built towards the end. Things didn’t turn out quite as I expected them to, but that’s no bad thing. The ending felt right, although that epilogue was a touch too over-the-top for me.

Fun, sexy and sweet, this is enjoyable escapism at its fairytale best. Just watch out for whispering mirrors.

That was one interesting story, when u think snow queen Elsa comes to mind and the Queen from Narnia, but in this case the snow queen is started more like the Narnia one then became Elsa XD

At first I was hesitating because I didn't want the heroine to be a bad guy from point one it's kinda felt that it was mean to her like she finally got a second chance in life and she is forced to play the bad guy

- I liked how she didn't want to play the bad guy and tried to find way to save herself and avoid harming anyone

- I liked her progress with the hero, hoe hesitant he was at first then bit by bit he opened up to her and love her it was beautiful to see

- I liked how the hero became attached to her, they lived like a family as he so didn't want to leave her (I went to all gooey during those parts)

- I hated what happened to the heroine at the end and how everyone was mean except the hero and how they were reunited was beautiful

- I hated the girl who plays the heroine in the story the girl who is supposed to be the good guy in the myth cause she was mean and only wanted what was best for her and she felt self righteous about everything

- The epilogue was cute and endearing XD

Overall, *thumbs up*

Barely OK for me..

I knew as soon as I started reading this that I would love it. I started laughing immediately. Loved Muffin, and Fifi was as crazy as a loon. She didn’t waste any time screwing things up. I guess she didn’t take enough notes. LOL..

The beginning was rather funny but then it became a little boring. I did not like this book as much as The Mermaid’s Knight or The Beast’s Bride. I really didn’t like the end. Kai and Charlotte got their HEA but I just didn’t like that rest of it. I don’t want to give it away so you’ll have to read it yourself.

Even though I did read these 3 books and as much as I liked them I will not be reading anything else from this author. I really can’t stand the word pu$$y during sex but I managed to just whip past the sex scenes, which I do hate to do, until I got back to the story.

37, 26, 12, that’s how many reviews for books 1, 2 and 3, in order. And the 4th book has 6 reviews. Less and less people are reading these book but I imagine it would have been more reading it if it hadn’t been dirty and been more romantic. But that’s just my opinion.

ASDGHJKL!!!

Five stars. I can't believe I let a whole month pass before I read this. I was actually just randomly thinking yesterday, "hmm, I wonder if Jill Myles wrote anything new." And when I saw this, I'm just like 'WTF?!'

I seriously thought that this author wouldn't write another book in this series. I love the author and everything she writes. The humor and romance in this book weren't missing and as usual, I sympathized with the heroine as she struggled with her new environment. I fell in love with the hero even when he was a huge jerk but that can be overlooked since the queen before her was a major bitch with a capital B.

I genuinely missed Muffin and I laughed my butt off when her new cotton candy(not really but in my imagination it is) pink haired intern, Fifi, made a huge mistake and turned Charlotte into the Snow Queen instead of Gerda.

But there is still a HEA that I loved. That's what I expected and that's what I got with a few complications in the middle.

The Snow Queen's Captive is a fantasy novella by Jill Myles. In The Snow Queen's Captive, modern day gal Charlotte has a bad dental experience and is whisked away to fairytale land by her fairy godmother. To get another chance at life, she has to live out The Snow Queen fairytale for 30 days. Charlotte wasn't familiar with the fairytale but I was so the book had me with just the cover (awesome cover). Anyway, in a funny twist Charlotte is stuck as the villain and the majority of the book focuses on Charlotte trying to figure out what that entails and trying to not lust after her hunky prisoner. I absolutely loved this story. Especially after succumbing to niece pressure and watching Disney's Frozen. I enjoyed Frozen but this story would make a much better movie...maybe not a Disney movie ;-) but definitely a movie I would love to watch....just not with my nieces until they are 18 and maybe not even then but anyway...the point is I loved this novella and I highly recommend it!!!

A REVIEW not a SUMMARY:
I absolutely adored this story! another great piece of work from one of my new favorite authors. Writing as Jill Myles or Jessica Clare, Jessica Sims, either or is never a waste of time and always a pleasure. I enjoyed this story of the evil Snow Queen, turned loving Snow Queen with the help of a little spitfire fairy godmother! I enjoyed the humor and witty banter between the fairies and their apt pupil Charlotte . Moments of laughter moments of worry and always warm moments between the hero and heroine. Going back to the Kobo library to see what I can purchase next, who needs a good night sleep? Tonight, apparently not I. Lol Thanks again Jessy! :)

Charlotte just died at her dentist due to an unknown allergy to nitrous. In pops Muffin, her fairy godmother and Muffins intern Fifi. Apparently Charlotte has a second chance at life if she can help move along the fairy tale, The Snow Queen, and Charlotte gets to be the heroine in the story. Unfortunately, things go wrong when Fifi accidentally makes her the Snow Queen instead and now Charlotte is the bad guy, has a month to complete her task, and also a gorgeous guy as her captive and don't forget the evil enchanted mirror. What can Charlotte do? Especially when she doesn't want to be the bad guy? Read to see what happens. >_<

(Actually 3.75 stars)

As if going to the dentist isn't a horrifying enough experience, Charlotte dies when she is in the chair for a root canal. Fairy godmother, Muffin, brings not only her fashions, but her intern, Fifi to help Charlotte's life get set to rights again. But Fifi botches her part and Charlotte ends up as the evil Snow Queen instead of the true love of her captive. For the majority of the read, Charlotte is trying desperately not to lust after her captive Kai. I liked this installment but not as much as it predecessors.

Love this series so much!

This is definitely one of my favorite series and I loved this book so much! It was super cute and funny and I'm so glad that Kai and Charolette got their happy ending. I especially was glad for the "gift" muffin gave them at the end because I was seriously hoping for something like that to happen for them. Anyways I cannot wait for more in this series!! :D

The Snow Queen was my favourite fairy tale when I was growing up so imagine my delight in this post-Frozen world in which we live: the queen is back in vogue! Yeeeees.

This story was ever so cute and I enjoyed it very much. I would have liked it to be a little longer maybe but still I had fun reading it. Now, I wonder if Goodreads has a list of Snow Queen retellings...
