Rate this book
There are strange happenings in the desert. Learn the truth about the Hereditas Expedition in this hair-raising tale of betrayal, devotion and religious fanaticism.

Was the Hereditas Expedition doomed from the start? Led by Pontifex Bilrach, the Mahjarrat must find the artifacts of the dead god Tumeken and complete the Ritual of Rejuvenation, otherwise they face extinction. Forced to work together by Zaros, the Mahjarrat form an uneasy alliance, though they all have their own ambitions.

Having found only sand and false hope wandering through the Kharidian Desert, the search is becoming ever more frustrating and the casualties mount as the humans die for the Mahjarrat cause. The desert is vast and full of danger, the sun is oppressive, and there are traitors in their midst. Can the Mahjarrat succeed despite these impossible odds?

Decent read but not the easiest story to follow.

Just wrapped up reading this book and unfortunately, it was a challenging read for me, despite being a RuneScape player of over 20 years. I can't put a finger on it but the story progression and sequence made it feel like a chore to read. Often, I found myself trying to connect the dots between chapters. This is a stark contrast to Erin M. Evan's previous RuneScape novel, The Gift of Guthix, which I found to be an enjoyable read.

But there is a saving grace - the RuneScape lore. The book brings out the deep, often convoluted in-game lore that's locked behind long quest lines and lengthy dialogues, and immerses the reader in the history as its happening.

This book had some really good interesting parts. I loved watching Damaris learn about humans and interact with her bretheran. But those good parts do not make up for the lack of plot. We spend the book stumbling around a dreamscape/shadow realm world where nothing can happen because they are stuck there and wander forever or until they're all dead. It doesn't make for the most exciting backdrop of a story. The lore was deep (with only one fail spotted) and was a strong suit of the book. Also Jerr sucks.
