The story of an adopted girl whose life revolves around her father & a mother who initially hates her existence. The average looking studious girl find strange side of friendships too.. Including the public harassment of being an adopted kid & a not so friendly approach by a bisexual friend.. .. Lots of tamil words involved due to the fictional place at which the story is taking place. We could see the difference in the way of thinking in the society.
“I would prefer to be a പെറ്റമ്മ (Mother who gave birth) but not a പോറ്റമ്മ (Mother to took care). The novel shows the gradual change of attitude in a childless mother. In time she starts loving the adopted girl. The relation between a father & the adopted girl. She was everything for him. She just could not see the way her father destroys his livelihood..
We get a feeling that the kind of comments made by the people in the society have been existing for ages. The higher cast ego destroys the future of the kid…this book comes with the typical SETHU way of explaining the relationships between individuals… a good small read..

Kadambari, the flower girl written and translated from Malayan by Sethu
An ode to the lost footings of an orphan. A heartfelt account of a child whose innocent beginnings are tarnished by societal malaise.
This book is ensconced in its simplicity of thoughts and people.
Gomathi and Shankaraman make their living by selling flowers near the temple.
It’s no easy task. Selecting the choicest of blooms and the dexterous fingers to retain their freshness.
A flower gang consists of five girls named after the flowers they handle .. their only problem of being a handicap..
A brief visit to the auspicious temple and the passing of the harikathe. An unkempt child found to the childless flower business parents .
Caste and creed dissolve for Shankaraman.
Initial acceptance comes with its nitty gritties.

Gomathi loves the child soon .
Throughout the book there is this impending sense of doom - everything may be okay - relationships, education and growth .

There’s always a precipitous future for everyone and those weak and clear natured fall prey to hearsay .
Here on it’s only a web of conceit woven by society .
After this everything goes into a downward spiral.
The story of kadambari is important in the present day too.
The identity of adopted children .
The identity of an orphan .

The sixth flower girl .
Once a series of dominoes are set, there’s no stopping the events .

In addition, there’s a consistent amalgamation of questions of feminism we all tend to ask ourselves. What is the role of a wife beyond her family ? Why must women limit themselves to marriage and so on..
