Hey! What's a 78 year old great grandad like you doing reading a kid's book?! Well, I found the first in the series very entertaining some years ago and this is #19. Read them all. Maybe my sophomoric sense of humor, maybe an enjoyable walk down memory lane attracts me to the series. But, like the others, found this one clever, humorous and enjoyable. Hope I am still around to enjoy #20 next year.

فقط ترجمه‌ش چندین ایراد از لحاظ بدفهمی منظور نویسنده و ساختار انگلیسی داشت که می‌شه ازش گذشت.

راستش به نظرم این سنت‌های خانوادگی را خیلی الکی گنده کرده‌اند. این که یک بار کاری را کرده‌ای، دلیل نمی‌شود هی ادامه‌اش بدهی!

خاله آودرا می‌گوید به جای این که روی بسته‌بندی غذاهای فراوری‌شده مقدار کالری را بنویسند، باید بگویند خوردنشان چقدر از عمرت کم می‌کند. ولی اگر می‌دانستم خوردن یک شکلات سه دقیقه از عمرم را کم می‌کند، مطمئن نیستم که این باعث بشود دست از خوردنش بردارم.

It’s the dreaded Family Beach Vacation for Greg Heffley!

In the 19th instalment of the hugely successful Diary of the Wimpy Kid series, titled Hot Mess, Greg’s Gramma wants the family to vacation at Ruttyneck Island in honour of her upcoming 75th birthday.

In attendance are, of course, Greg and his family – Mum, Dad, older brother Rodrick, and younger brother, Manny.

Greg’s aunts on his mother’s side – Aunt Gretchen and her two bratty twins Malcolm and Malvin, Aunt Cakey and her long-suffering boyfriend Vincent, and Aunt Veronica and her internet-famous dog Dazzle.

And gate-crasher Uncle Gary – Greg’s dad’s brother.

Prepare yourself for the hilarity and light-heartedness. These books are always chock full of fun, and entertaining twists and surprises. As always, Greg tries his best to stay out of trouble and fails spectacularly. It would be boring if he didn’t. I loved spending time with Greg, his family, and relatives. The perfect holiday read to put you in high spirits.

HILARIOUS and nostalgic

If we're being honest, and I think we can be here, it's probably about time that Kinney wraps it for Greg and company - 17 years is a hell of a long time for a kid to be in middle school. Slowly, the books have become more image-focused and less text - I'm not sure there's a spread here that doesn't have an image taking up at least 1/3 of the page; this is fundamentally a graphic novel that still sits in the children's novels section of the library - and the relative hit ratio of the jokes and plots has become shaky in the last ten years. That being said, this one is stronger than last year's insofar as that it has an actual plot with a final twist instead of a series of sketches strung together; the vacation books have always excelled in that regard and this one is no different, even if an astute child should guess the twist as soon as the second piece of evidence is presented. Kinney's nods toward the present day also come to the forefront here with the addition of an influencer dog, the sort of side character that would have been viewed as outlandish in 2007 but is now relatively commonplace - the way things change. Anyway, I'm never really sure why I keep reading these and part of my hope for an ending is a hope to move on, but once a ball starts rolling, it takes effort to stop it, so for now Greg and I are bound to each other each fall. So it goes.

Another “long haul” vacation is in for Greg as his mom takes the Heffley family on a beach house vacation for the summer with her sisters and their families that will no doubt be a very uncomfortable ride. Aside from troubles on the beach and the cramped house arrangements, Greg will learn about the family’s long history of troubles involving meatballs, old boyfriends and a social media dog.

Of course, it’s another crazy and funny calamity of a story about family, summer and surprises with some that will really surprise you. Like any vacation too, it still has a nice finish. A- (91%/Excellent)

Although it is getting repetitive with the vacations at this point, it was still enjoyable and fun to know some of the secrets that the family has. Influencer aspect involved in this book was funny too. Imagine a dog with 3.8M followers 😆

মনে আছে, বেস্ট সেলার এই সিরিজের একটা বই আগে পড়ে বিরক্ত হয়েছিলাম বেশ৷ এটা নিয়ে কেনো এতো মাতামাতি বা কি ই বা এমন মজা আছে তখন তা ধরতে পারিনি। কারনটা somehow এখন বুঝতে পেরেছি এটা পড়ে। হিউমার জিনিসখান অনেকখানি নির্ভর করে কালচারের উপরে৷ জার্মানদের কাছে যেসব জিনিস কৌতুককর, আমাদের কাছে তা বিভৎস মনে হতে পারে। আবার আমাদের দেশের শালী-দুলাভাই কেন্দ্রিক রসের আদিম ধারার মর্ম পশ্চিমারা ধরতে পারেনা। 

সিরিজটি আমেরিকায় অসম্ভব রকমের জনপ্রিয়। বিক্রির সংখ্যা মাথা ঘোরানো ধরণের। ভোলানাথ কিসিমের এক বান্দর টাইপ পিচ্চি পোলার জীবনের কাহিনী এত কৌতূহল জাগানিয়া হয় কেমনে! উক্ত বইখানা পড়ে কিছু ধারণা পেলাম। বইয়ের কাহিনী তেমন কিছুনা, পরিবারের সবাই মিলে একসাথে ছুটিতে বিশেষ সময় কাটাতে গিয়ে সেখানে নানান কান্ডকারখানার জন্ম দেয়া। বইটি পড়তে মজা লাগার আসল কারন হচ্ছে লেখক humorously  আমেরিকানদের পরিবার ও সামাজিক জীবনযাপনের দৈনন্দিন nuances গুলো ফুটিয়ে তুলতে পেরেছেন। এমনকি কোন কোন জায়গায় সিরিয়াস স্যাটায়ার সুযোগ তিনি মিস করেন নাই। বইটি মার্কিন মুলুকে জনপ্রিয় হবেই, কারন সমসাময়িক জীবনযাত্রার ওমন নির্দোষ কৌতুকময় ছবিতে তারা নিজেদের অবসর আনন্দ পাবে খুব স্বাভাবিক। আমি পড়ে মজা পেয়েছি বেশ তবে অনেককিছুই আমার ওরিয়েন্টাল জীবনাভিজ্ঞতার সীমান্তের বাইরে।

Greg's Gramma's seventy-fifth birthday is coming up, so the family comes up with a plan to recreate a childhood photo and spend time together as per Gramma's request. Greg's mum rents the same beach house they used to rent for their childhood holidays, and the whole family is housed together. The house is small, the weather hot, throw in some family secrets, and you have got yourself an entertaining vacation.

This was a funny read. I enjoyed it way more than I expected myself to. I loved the addition of Greg's mum's sisters and their lives. Also, loved the celebrity dog along with all the secrets that surface. But most of all, I loved the relatable recreation of the childhood photo. Been there and done that, or rather not done that, haha ha.
