Thank you NetGalley and the author for the arc!🥹💗

Okay so this is a very conflicting review to write- probably one of my most conflicting reviews I will ever write.

I did not hate this book, but saying I enjoyed it is far from the true but saying I didn’t think it was magnificent would also be a lie yet I couldn’t get myself to pick this up bc I wanted to pick it up and more bc I had to pick it up.

The first 100 pages had me in a chokehold, it even felt like a 5 star read bc if you know me you knowwww my favorite kind of books are books where the main character starts weak but gets stronger and stronger until everyone fears her and the beginning gave these vibe soooo well but sadly enough it wasn’t enough for me.

The book is very detailed and I truly don’t remember when the last time was that I read a book with a world building this insane. The amount of time and effort put into creating it was very clear from the beginning and it was the only reason I wanted to continue (besides the fact that I was hoping we were going to get some badass scenes). Howeverrrr I do think that, at times, there was toooo much detail and it was becoming overwhelming, bc it would feel like you read 3 pages full with world building and random details, but you only read one page😭

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙬𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙜:
➝ A lot was going on and yet it felt like nothing happened- how are we 200 pages in and it feels like only one thing has happened? How are we 60% in and nothing thrilling has happened yet? Tbh after the 60% mark I fully fullyyyy lost it- idk what happened after that, I really really don’t know and I don’t care bc I wasn’t getting enough thrilling moments in the story to make me excited about the rest and its ending.

➝ The pov’s of the love interest felt useless. In some I would be like “okay this is cool” and in others I would be like “nothing happens, just more world building I really didn’t need rn” and after 60% I gave up.

➝ There was more explaining in this book than that there was actual dialogue. I really liked the amount of detail and effort put into it, but at times it went wayy too far.

➝ We failed in the training scenes. I was yearninggg for good fighting/training scenes (I wanted them with the love interest but like I said my boy wasn’t even there, he was busy getting butchered on the other side of the world), but we really didn’t get enough of that. It felt like I read 2 training scenes and then the trainer left and she goes to climb a mountain that’s invested with fairies and then she makes a friend and….. weren’t we supposed to fight? Get stronger? Maybe this happened but after 300 PAGES, like I said, I gave up 😃😃 maybe we got more after that, but it’s too late now, I’m no longer invested.

➝ Why is the love interest the guy she literally doesn’t see, at all. We see him, he leaves for what? Half the book? More than half the book? And then apparently he returns but idk why or how or what bc I gave up. I know the romance isn’t the main point of this story, but because we kind of failed on the training scenes and the- her- getting-stronger-and-everyone-fearing-her part I at least wanted some good slow burn romance, but no we didn’t get it😍 maybe after the 60% mark? Maybe, but once again, the book has lost Mai. I don’t mind books who don’t have a lot of romance, but if the synopsis says “fighting her growing feelings for the ***” then I expect to see that portrayed well with scenes of them TOGETHER.

➝ More pages doesn’t mean a better book❗️❗️❗️❗️ this book has no business being 500 pages long, really really unnecessary bc those 500 pages weren’t filled up in the right way. I probably would have enjoyed this more if half of this was cut out and the book was around 300/400 pages long.

Overall the premise of a poor weak girl getting freed from prison so she can train for some kind of tournament is amazing. It’s thrilling, fun and an action packed idea, but I feel like we didn’t execute it well enough. There was a lot of time and effort put into creating everything, but not enough of time put into the more “fun” parts of the story. The story needed to move quicker or, at least, be shorter.

I do recommend it, but also not. I guess it really depends on what you want.

I wish I could give a more detailed review, but like I have said a thousand times (sorry guys) I totally lost it after 60% so I truly do not remember a single thing that happened after that. I skipped through so many pages, skimmed and just full on lost focus while reading.

Anyways I would definitely read from this author again, but maybe a shorter book 😭

“You’re like a flower pushing through the cracks in a stone, striving for light despite all the obstacles in your path. “

IF I COULD GIVE THIS BOOK 6 STARS I WOULD

The writing was nothing short of divine—each sentence a melody, each word a brushstroke that painted the pages with elegance and depth.

This is nothing short of enchantment bound in pages. From the very first line, I was swept into a world brimming with ancient secrets, sacred bonds, and the echo of destinies long foretold. This book now holds a treasured place among my top 10 reads of all time—a tale that has carved itself into my heart like runes etched in stone.

I was only two chapters in when I knew—this story already had my heart. The writing wrapped around me like a spell, and I didn’t hesitate for a moment before ordering the physical copy. This isn’t just a story to read—it’s one to hold, to treasure, and to return to again and again.

The writing is pure sorcery—lyrical, immersive, and dripping with magic. Each word feels deliberately woven, casting a spell that transports you deep into a realm where blood ties carry power, oaths are sacred, and shadows stir beneath the surface.

At the heart of the story lies a young warrior bound by a legacy she never asked for, thrust into a world of political intrigue, ancient rivalries, and elemental forces beyond her understanding. As alliances shift and hidden truths unravel, she must navigate a path forged in fire, sacrifice, and the strength of unexpected friendships.

And oh, the characters—I loved them all with a ferocity I didn’t see coming. Their arcs are rich and raw, each one crafted with such care that you feel their triumphs, their losses, and everything in between. The bonds of friendship are profound, the battles fierce, the grief palpable—and the slow burn romance… gods help me, it’s exquisite. A yearning that simmers beneath every glance, every brush of a hand. It’s the kind that aches in the best way.

If you’re a devotee of A Court of Thorns and Roses or long for the immersive wonder of Harry Potter, Blood Oath is your next obsession. This story feels like it was forged in starlight and shadow, crafted by a hand that understands what it means to truly feel a story.

A tale of heart, sacrifice, and ancient power—this book is a gift. I’m utterly spellbound.

Can I start this review by saying....WOW!! What an incredible first book in a series! I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this from NetGalley-my very first ARC and WOW was this good! From page one, I was instantly hooked! The pacing was great with beautiful descriptive lush writing that instantly transported me into this world. Every detail I can picture vividly in my head as if I was there fully immersed in this story alongside these characters. This story has so many different elements and tropes that we all love to see: Dark Dystopian YA, Enemies to Lovers, strong female character role, elemental magic, bonded dragons, training camp to become a warrior/assassin amid a war, multiple POVs, gods, vampires, a slow burn romance !! I loved it all!! Not to mention, it is very atmospheric, from the start of the book we are following our FMC Allyeria who is a prisoner facing execution for saving a girl who was accused of witchcraft. You are immediately transported to this prison with Allyeria. I was instantly hooked! Can't wait for book 2!

Fantasy

Age Rating For It-
15+ because there is a good amount of violence and other themes, and also the tiniest bit of romance that is both super slow burn and somehow rushed at the same time.

“Slow burn” (supposedly)
Enemies to lovers
Blood oaths (aka a bargain)
Prisoner in an awful prison
Prep for trials

Song to Represent this Book-
This whole book just gave off brand Luminary
by Joel sunny

Notes and Highlights-

“Welcome to Obsidian”
Or should I say welcome to the night court? Which would fit better, the real quote or the off brand one?

“Until next time, lil’ mouse”
*sigh* Need I say more…

“‘You can’t leave us,’ he said softly, his hands clasped before him as if in a prayer. ‘You can’t leave me.’”
It’s giving third act breakup that never actually happened in the first place.

“‘I said not now!’ he yelled.”
Aw, yes because we love to be mean to our best and closest friends that did nothing whatsoever…

“I am Allyria Pilar, and I will not be afraid”
Hmm, where have I heard this before?
Oh, yea, Throne of fricken Glass

“Thank you,’ she suddenly spoke.
‘For what?’
‘You finally gave me a direct answer.’”
You mean, thank you for giving me a fricken story.
That was no real answer, that was a fairytale.

“That’s not what’s important not yet.”
Aw, yes, another “direct answer”

Usually this’ll stay “Thoughts/would I recommend this?” but not today because today all there is to talk about is my hatred for this-
This entire book took the amazement that is Sarah J Maas and attempted to copy it, and failed miserably. The fmc was just giving pick me girl most of the book and also clueless and dumb all at the same fricken time. I was honestly having to search for something in this book I actually liked, and the one thing I found was that I liked the wolf the fmc had. The wolf was the best character in this all, like how can someone make an animal the best living thing in the book and the only reason the book gets a one-star review. The wolf was just so cute and protective and everything I wish was in an actual character, but instead it was in a fricken animal… Like please when you want to write your own book write your very own book, don’t just copy someone else in an off brand version of tog or acotar combined. It’s almost like you're trying to hitchhike on the success that is Sarah J Maas, like I get it. There are a lot of books nowadays that are similar, but this one was definitely not as successful as some of the rest of them. This book just had so, so much potential, and it took it, threw it into a dumpster and lit it on fire and just watched it burn. I honestly did not want to just bash on this book the whole review, but I just think this book needs to be edited and made unique so it’s not a bad version of some of the best high fantasy books ever, acotar, and tog. It was almost like she wanted to make the book have a bunch of the best tropes like slow burn and then switched it to the opposite at the last second and made the entire book feel rushed. All in all, l would undoubtedly not recommend or recommend anyone even consider reading this, sadly.

(Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review)

Chef's kiss 5 / 5 Star Rating

If you’re looking for a dark fantasy/dystopian fantasy novel that will immediately engage you, Blood Oath by Kayla Cunningham should be your next choice. I CAN'T STATE THIS ENOUGH. I really loved this book!

From the outset, the story presents the brutal and troubling reality of Allyria Pilar’s life. Having survived years of imprisonment due to her ability with magic, Allyria suddenly finds herself bound by an inescapable blood oath to the enigmatic Death Dealer. But freedom, as she soon learns, is never really free.

Blood Oath is distinguished by its truly immersive world-building. Allyria’s story is steeped in history and the landscapes she traverses are vividly described. What’s more, the book balances action with lore, meaning there is never a dull moment. The tension surrounding the suppression of magic adds an additional layer of intrigue, making the stakes feel all the higher. The suggestion of the rise and fall of magic in the land brings the danger of being a magic practitioner to the fore and highlights Allyria’s bravery and persistence in mastering the craft.

The history of the Sovereign War and its aftermath provides a layered backdrop, adding depth and intrigue. Magic is depicted as both ancient and feared, creating an atmosphere of tension. The opening chapter, set in the stark and imposing Redvine Prison, sets the stage for a compelling journey (and no, just because it opens in a prison doesn't make it like Sarah J Mass or TOG.) It was really interesting to read about the author, particularly the fact she is a history teacher inside an adult prison! But even more so is the fact you can tell the prison setting is similar to a medieval setting, where lower class people were punished for things like stealing bread, or hunting on the king's lands (which is what happens in this book). The vivid descriptions evoke a sense of hardship, making Allyria’s struggles immediately resonate....and in a way historic in nature. Women hunted throughout history. Not just in ACOTAR or Hunger Games. And it was a way of survival. It's interesting to see how the author pulls historic moments and makes them part of fantasy. Due to hunting on the king's lands, she is sentenced to die, but is instead put in prison (thanks to the Death Dealer). LOVE IT!

Okay, now let's talk about the characters....

Seventeen-year-old Allyria Pilar is everything I want in a heroine—brave, stubborn, vulnerable, and real. Her act of compassion brands her a traitor, and her only way out? Swearing a blood oath to the Death Dealer, the king’s most feared assassin. (Yes, he’s exactly as intense, mysterious, and emotionally complex as that sounds.) In my opinion, the character Allyria is a well-crafted protagonist, distinguished by her resilience and sharp intellect. Unlike many fantasy heroes who discover their abilities by chance, her strength and determination feel earned through experience. Her choices, whether to resist or protect, carry weight and meaning, making her an engaging and dynamic lead that is set on saving her family/providing for them after her brother's death. I found Allyria really likeable and she is a compelling protagonist—fierce, resourceful, and burdened by a past that refuses to stay buried.

Allyria’s conflicted relationship with the Death Dealer is another highlight of the novel...which is why she was in the prison. Their dynamic is fraught with tension due to their enforced partnership, deep-seated mistrust, and burgeoning allure as they navigate a world filled with betrayals and power struggles. I think one of my favorite factors that others may think is slow is the fact that the author took the time developing the characters and training them. So many books rush into the human + super powers = immediate bad ass by page 50-100. But this book doesn't do that. Allyria (who is human + a female) trains...and works hard. She has to learn. Making it realistic and believable when she's surrounded by immortal legends and bad asses.

The Death Dealer is just as intriguing as Allyria and quite sexy. As his past is shrouded in mystery and his real motivations remain unclear, his intensions regarding Allyria are difficult to pin down, although some of his true character is seemingly revealed as their quest progresses. I love his story arc. And I love the fact we don't know his name. It's hidden. When the Death Dealer finally appears throughout the story, his presence is felt, adding intrigue and raising the stakes.

And Cassius? Okay, I know there relationship is platonic, but I really hope to see a love triangle in the future books, because Cassius is one of my favorites! I really like the fact he trains her. You can see the fact he cares for her, and maybe he'll be a future contender? One can only hope.

✨ What I loved:

The Death Dealer (IYKYK… just wait)

Allyria’s evolving strength and reluctant alliances

Found family moments and heartbreaking betrayals

Vivid worldbuilding with a rich mythos—dragons, vampires, fae, and so much more beneath the surface

This book does have some difficult topics and conversations. Cunningham explores the psychological challenges of survival alongside the broader conflicts of war and power. The writing is evocative, drawing readers into the story's emotional depth. Through its thrilling combat scenes and neatly realized character development, Blood Oath explores the weighty themes of power, sacrifice, and loyalty, which is why I think it reads more of a new age vs ya. But then again the nature of ya has really changed in recent years. Cunningham doesn’t shy away from the darker elements of the story here, depicting the harsh reality of Allyria’s life in the prison and her interactions with preternatural creatures, as well as the battles and betrayals she subsequently faces, with aplomb. These difficult elements form the story’s emotional core, reflecting the brutal experience of life in a complex world rather than offering a fairy-tale version of a fantasy story.

Despite this realism and the historical elements of imprisonmen, hunting, class systems (like medieval Europe), and electricity in the human lands (I kept picturing 1880 London at the start of electricity and power grids), the magic system in Blood Oath is fascinating, as is the history and practice of the Elder Tournaments (which I can't wait for in book 2). Rather than being an abundant force that is accessible to all, magic is something to be feared, having nearly been lost to time in Redbone. The idea that power still lingers in certain individuals other than Allyria—as both a gift and a curse—adds an element of unpredictability to the story. Moreover, Cunningham ensures that magic never becomes a mere plot device but rather serves as a deeply integrated aspect of the world and its conflicts.

This book really immerses readers in a richly detailed setting. I think the pacing of Blood Oath is well-balanced, avoiding the overly complex exposition that can slow down fantasy novels. It's detailed, so it reads more of a new age vs early ya, but Cunningham keeps the narrative moving, ensuring that each scene contributes meaningfully to the plot.

Kayla Cunningham did a great job crafting a dark, immersive tale that will hook readers who love intricate world-building and morally complex characters and I can't wait for more people to talk about this and read it! Blood Oath has a lot of action and it has a fast-paced narrative, atmospheric setting, and compelling characters. I really think Blood Oath is a rewarding read. I just wish people would stop comparing it to Sarah J Mass. This book is immersive, engaging, and leaves a lasting impression and is probablly my top fantasy of 2025.

And the ending? WOW. Talk about slow burn! I was literally biting my lip during the last chapter...but then the sneak peak....holy hell. I knew the Death Dealer was morally grey, but now I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for book 2.

Final Thoughts:
Blood Oath is the beginning of something epic. It’s about finding your power when the world tries to silence you, choosing your own fate, and making impossible decisions in the name of survival. This book offers a refreshing take on familiar themes while maintaining a strong narrative voice. If you love high-stakes fantasy with sharp edges, slow-burn romance, and characters who feel real, this book is an absolute must-read. If you're into dystopian societies with a touch of magic and rebellion, this one’s a gripping ride from start to finish. And with this first book being such a strong opening to the series, it’s impossible not to wonder what will come next. So if you haven't picked up this book...do it. Highly recommended to all dark fantasy lovers! I’m not just waiting for book two. I’m counting the days.

I received this ARC from NetGalley.
3.5 rounded up
This is a really interesting premise with a lot happening and a ton of detail. There were parts where I felt like it was too much detail about things that weren't necessary for the story. I had some issues with figuring out time because, even though the sections were broken off into POVS, within each POV passages of time would happen and it wouldn't be clear. I am sure part of that is the formatting of the ebook I was reading. There was also a lot of repetition.
I saw a lot of similarities to other fantasy series but I think that is normal because every thing you do, you are influenced.
It is also a VERY slow burn which I actually appreciated in this novel because it was done pretty well. I did see some issues with it and there were times where it was a little difficult to get through but overall I really enjoyed the story of it and the groundwork that is being laid for the overall series.

HOLY HEL!!
This was my first net galley book and it did not disappoint!! The MFC is probably my favourite one so far, she is very likeable and you really root for her. She isn’t reckless like most characters seem to be and everything she’s been through she just gets shit done! The MMC is brutal and beautiful but kind and worn down by duty. The world building was amazing and the building of characters was thorough. The story was bloody brilliant and I am hooked, I’m sad I can’t yet continue the story.

4.5 🌟

Allyria witnessed, with barely contained rage, as the prison guards lit the pyre meant to burn a girl who they thought was a magic wielder. To practice magic was treasonous. The look in the girl's eyes compelled Allyria to save her... and in a storm of chaos, the witch disappeared, leaving Allyria to face torture by the hands of the guards. Until the Death Dealer came to make sure they freed her, as she owed him a blood oath debt.

She was freed from the prison, only to be subjected to more dangerous situations and a gamble that had her pledging herself to the Death Dealer for a time. She was to train for the Elder Tournaments -- deadly trials, and was whisked away to another realm, one of magic and mysteries. But his people just wanted to be rid of her, the human. It was a trial, in itself, to be amongst them, let alone learn skills to survive.

There would be secrets - a legacy kept hidden, a bond, friendships formed, court politics and intrigue in both realms, a severing, a high-stakes quest, and a battle. There are multiple plots going on in this book, but it's written in a manner that is easy to follow, for the most part.

I was kind of sad that Allyria and the Death Dealer spent so little time together, but their interactions, though few, were lovely -- especially toward the last quarter. I'm guessing -- hoping -- that Book 2 will remedy this by refocusing on them once the Tournament is completed and... if Allyria survives. War is coming.

Riveting high-stakes dark fantasy that captured and held my attention! FYI, no spice and low romance.

3.75 ⭐ rounded up!

This totally pulled me in with its worldbuilding. The different races, magical creatures, and landscapes made everything feel so vivid and alive. I loved Allyria as the FMC. Her character development felt real and earned, and I was rooting for her the whole way through.

The magic system was another thing that really stood out to me. It felt fresh and different from a lot of what I’ve read lately. It was detailed enough to be intriguing but still mysterious in all the right ways.

That said, the romance didn’t quite hit for me. There were moments of chemistry and potential, but by the end it felt like it got fast tracked. I wanted more buildup and emotional payoff. It just didn’t feel like they had enough time together for where it ended.

Still, this was a super engaging read with a lot of heart and imagination. I’m definitely interested in reading what happens next!

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an ARC!

From the beginning this book reminded me of Throne of Glass, the main character Allyria has a very similar story arc, of being imprisoned, training to be an assassin, magic. This book is slow paced but it worked, i enjoyed the change of pace and slow grow of the characters. The training is show at a slower pace than most of my recent reads and I'm here for it. It's not just the poor unqualified girl that is destined to save the world and in like 3 chapters she is magically stronger and capable.

The things i didn't like was the author uses what to me felt like to many different mythology references so it can be a little confusing. Also it quickly and repeatedly talks about the "Elder tournament" the main character has to compete in to proof herself and the tournament is not explained at all until we get a glimpse at the last 5% of the book and SPOILER the tournament doesn't happen in the book looks like it will take place in the next book.

Includes Gods, vampires, fea, witches, dragon's, multiple POVs, slow burn romance, elemental magic female main character.

“…loss like that left wounds too deep to mend easily, and some-times holding onto hatred was less painful than trying to heal.”

“Blood Oath,” by Kayla Cunningham

Perfect for readers who want a hero that doesn’t just become an amazing fighter in a few days. This book was incredibly good. Like I said, it was a lot of the FMC learning to be a great fighter and it didn’t happen overnight, many years in fact. I loved the characters so much, I also loved how little the two main characters actually had scene time at the same time in the book, which I felt was a unique type of plot for a book 1 and ended up really liking it. It starts off with FMC in prison, so it reminded me a lot of Throne of Glass. 5 out of 5 stars, cannot wait for book 2.

ARC review, release date 18th March 2025

Foreword gives great backstory and detail.
Cover is gorgeously designed
The map is absolutely stunning, one of the best I've seen, it's not too detailed but the design is lovely.
I love Multiple POVs in fantasy books.
Copy and pasted from other popular fantasy books.

The use of action straight from the first page made it intriguing and attention grabbing while still world building in a way that wasn't boring. I often find first books to a fantasy series 'world build' too much while focusing on the series arc and not the individual books arc making the first book slow which is completely opposite to this book. It's action packed and page turning from the first chapter. However, with chapters opening with laws and legislations it reminds me of Fourth wing's structure/style. The way the book opens with the FMC in a prison being forced to work, being tortured/whipped and surviving three years there despite people usually not surviving one to then be in a blood oath with the Death Dealer and trained to fight feels very much like Aelin and Rowan in Throne of glass but with more magic and details of the FMCs torture straight off the bat. This combined with her backstory of learning to hunt with a bow to feed her sisters when her dad couldn't provide for them after grief, then being taken to a house warded for only her and him to enter and the right hand man being called Cassius but Cass for short reminds me of A Court of Thorns and Roses (Feyre hunting for her sisters, Rhys building their house and warding it, Cassian vs Cassius). I do, however, think this book will be popular with SJ Maas fans and those who have been in a 'fantasy reading hangover' after reading them because of that. Even the nickname "lil' mouse" just reminds me of Zade Meadows. The story is written really well but the plot didnt feel orginal for a fantasy book. I don't think that takes anything away from this being a good book but it did make it predictable the more you read through it. Which is a shame because there is so much you can do with fantasy but the genre as a whole tends to be copied and pasted and this book has fallen into that same pattern.

⭐️⭐️⭐️
Three stars for the writing style and design of the book. The story was good but didn't get 5/5 stars because it didn't feel orginal as it has been done before in other popular fantasy/romance books.

FAVORITE READ OF THE YEAR

This book *ruined me* in the best way possible.

*Blood Oath* is everything I crave in a dark fantasy: dangerous secrets, slow-burning tension, morally grey characters, and a romance that doesn't explode all at once—but builds, burns, and *sweeps you away* before you even realize you’ve fallen. Kayla Cunningham doesn’t just write a story—she builds a world you fall into and never want to leave.

The dark vibes? Immaculate.
The romance? Subtle, steady, soul-consuming.
The stakes? Higher than my emotional stability while reading.

If you love enemies-to-lovers, forbidden bonds, deadly magic, and plots that make your heart race *and* break—you need to read this. Trust me. I’ve been in a book hangover ever since.

This is *the* fantasy romance I’ll be recommending all year.

Magic is outlawed, and 17-year-old Allyria is being sentenced to death for rescuing a young girl who is accused of witchcraft. About to be executed, survival is the only thing on her mind.
However, at the brutal and notorious Redvine Prison, no one escapes… until now…
But her freedom has a price, and she must pay it with a blood oath, leaving her fate in the hands of the King's most feared assassin, the Death Dealer.
This thrusts her onto a harrowing path into a vicious world on the brink of war, where every day is life or death, and everyone can’t be trusted. The stakes are high as she must overcome unbreakable curses, immortal warriors, meddling gods, powerful magic that always comes at a cost, dark secrets, and an irresistible flying death god. And in the end, “she faces a dangerous choice: embrace her destiny—or be consumed by it.”

If you like a dark romantasy with reluctant heroines that find their power and let it rage on those who hurt the ones they love, morally grey anti hero’s that heartbreakingly pine for the girl they can’t have, found family, cute and ferocious beasts, immortal warriors, meddling gods, warring kingdoms, political intrigue, forbidden magic, deadly curses, dark secrets, and lots of action? This is it, babes… You’re gonna wanna read this one.

(I did take .5-.75 because I feel like there was a lot of repetition of different sentences/things/ideas/etc in many of the chapters. That says the same thing; just worded differently and said one right after the other.
Also, in many of the synopses I saw of this book, it mentions a deadly tournament, but you’re not gonna get the actual tournament till probably book 2. So if you’re like me and were expecting it in this book, because that’s what is promised… I’m telling you, it’s not… So now you won’t have a raging meltdown like I did and make your cat that was just rotting with you in blissful peace, once again, question their life choices and silently judge you).

I REALLY enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see what happens next (🤞🏻I get my deadly tournament!!).

Thank you, NetGalley, publishers, and author, for an eARC of this book!

What a captivating story! I want to read the next one now please. This novel has all ilks of fantasy creatures from elves to faeries to vampires. I noticed themes from some of my other recent favorite YA fantasy novels woven into the pages of this book, but it has its own unique twist. There is basically everything one could want in a YA fantasy novel including a little bit of, but not too much, romance.

Thank you Kayla Cunningham for the opportunity to read this lovely, engaging, dark, rich story. What an unexpected treat to meet you at the elevator that day when you noticed me holding a copy of Blood of Hercules! Keep on writing and I will keep reading what you write.

I’m so happy I was able to read the eARC.

Blood Oath (Storm Breaker #1) has everything I love in a fantasy; found family, magical creatures, enemies to lovers (personal fave), political intrigue, elemental magic system, training camp and so much more.

Although I will say the deadly ‘elder tournament’ doesn’t actually really happen in this book (the description does say it has it) so I’m assuming it will be in the next book. I did rate it slightly lower for this reason.

Regardless, this did not make it no less entertaining and I didn’t feel like I had to push myself through it which I’ve found before when it’s been a longer fantasy book.

I love when the FMC is full of rage because I feel like I can relate more (mind your business). But give me a morally grey MMC? I’ll be there anytime, any day.

I will be continuing the series to see how it all evolves as I do love the world that’s being created.

Want to say thank you to the author and NetGalley for an eARC of this book!

I was rooting for Allyria from the first chapter. This story was gritty and full of suspense and slow burn tension. I was hooked from the first page and could not stop reading. Danger and magic abound and I ate up the world Kayla created.

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING! PICK IT UP AND READ IT. Blood Oath is an exhilarating blend of high-stakes survival, magic-fueled intrigue, and relentless action, all wrapped in a world where power and oppression collide. FIRST, LET ME SAY I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS AUTHOR. HER TRAGIC ROMANCE BLEW ME AWAY. TOTAL TEAR JERKER. I was excited to check out her fantasy, and i wasn't disappointed! This is the second book I've read of hers and she's one of my new favorite authors.

Blood Oath (Storm Breaker #1) is the kind of debut that doesn’t just leave an impression—it brands itself into your soul. I went into this expecting a fun YA fantasy with familiar tropes like enemies-to-lovers and The Chosen One, and I saw the reviews about it being like TOG because it starts in a prison and the female hunts. But what I got was something so much richer, darker, and more emotionally layered than I ever anticipated. Kayla Cunningham delivers an explosive, immersive fantasy filled with danger, magic, romance, and a heroine who is as haunted as she is powerful.

Allyria Pilar is a compelling protagonist—fierce, resourceful, and burdened by a past that refuses to stay buried. Kayla Cunningham crafts a dark, immersive tale that will hook readers who love intricate world-building and morally complex characters. If you're into dystopian societies with a touch of magic and rebellion, this one’s a gripping ride from start to finish.

From the very first page, I was hooked. Allyria isn’t your typical protagonist. She’s not only flawed—she’s been forged by trauma, sharpened by survival, and burdened with powers she doesn’t fully understand. The world she inhabits is brutal and complex, with an undercurrent of political tension and ancient magic that reminded me of Throne of Glass meets Shadow and Bone, but with a grittier, more historically grounded edge. And while comparisons to big-name series will naturally happen, Blood Oath absolutely stands on its own.

The writing is cinematic and vivid. I felt the scorch of battle, the ache of guilt, the tremble of first love, and the constant pull of destiny threatening to unravel everything Allyria thought she knew. The characters—especially the brooding assassin, the reluctant mentor, and the morally gray love interestwere compelling and layered. Even side characters felt like real people with real stakes. I love the wolf, and I love Cassius.

BE PREPARED, THERE IS A LOT OF WORLD BUILDING AND BACK STORY TO GET US TO BOOK 2 AND SET THE STAGE. Also, if you were expecting a heroine to just develop super awesome skills in a chapter, that isn't this book. It's like George RR Martin's writing...meaning lots of world building in book 1.

This book does a masterful job of weaving together classic fantasy tropes—prophecies, dark lords, ancient magical artifacts, found family, and of course, enemies-to-lovers—while still making it feel fresh and urgent. There are vampires, fae, elves, witches, and wizards—but none of them are generic. Each race and region has its own culture, mystery, and depth.

The slow-burn romance had me flipping pages and screaming internally. The two characters aren't together much to start, because they have their own story to develop and stories to follow. But the chapters they are together, there is tension, stolen moments, the emotional scars—they all built up to something that felt earned and deeply satisfying. Add to that the subtle undercurrents of forbidden magic and a centuries-old war, and you’ve got a book that is completely unputdownable.

Allyria’s journey is not just about discovering her power, but also reckoning with her past and deciding who she wants to become in a world that has already decided what she is. Her inner turmoil, her dreams haunted by blood and fire, and her defiant will to fight for those she loves makes her one of the most unforgettable heroines I’ve read in a long time.

Allyria’s conflicted relationship with the Death Dealer is another highlight of the novel. Their dynamic is fraught with tension due to their enforced partnership, deep-seated mistrust, and burgeoning allure as they navigate a world filled with betrayals and power struggles. The Death Dealer is just as intriguing as Allyria. As his past is shrouded in mystery and his real motivations remain unclear, his intensions regarding Allyria are difficult to pin down, although some of his true character is seemingly revealed as their quest progresses.

Through its thrilling combat scenes and neatly realized character development, Blood Oath explores the weighty themes of power, sacrifice, and loyalty.

Despite this realism, the magic system in Blood Oath is fascinating, as are the history and practice of the Elder Tournaments.

By the end, I was absolutely hooked. I need book 2 in my hands...like today. If you’re a fan of dark fantasy, slow-burn romance, and richly developed worlds with real stakes and soul-shattering moments, Blood Oath will become your new obsession. I can’t wait for the sequel. This is easily one of the best indie fantasy novels I’ve read in years. Kayla Cunningham is an author to watch.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — THIS BOOK NEEDS TO GO VIRAL.
Best indie author I’ve read in ages!

Blood Oath: Storm Breaker I is one of those rare indie fantasy gems that grabs you by the throat from page one and doesn’t let go. I went in expecting a dark romantic fantasy—and what I got was a deeply emotional, powerfully written, and totally immersive experience that I’ll be thinking about for a long time. Blood Oath: Storm Breaker I is everything I’ve ever wanted in a fantasy novel—and then some. If you're a fan of dark fantasy with emotional stakes, slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance, deadly prophecies, prison escapes, magical bloodlines, and just the right amount of chaos—this book delivers. Honestly, it's one of the best indie fantasy reads I've picked up in a long time.

The book:
In a world ruled by ancient magic, bloodlines, and brutal power, Allyria is a girl with no title, and a fire inside her she never asked for. Born in the slums of Redbone and locked away in the prison of Redvine after trying to feed her family, she spends three years trying to survive in a world that punishes magic and worships control. But when a blood oath saves her, she's thrusts her into the heart of Obsidian—an ancient, war-torn city ruled by magical houses and deadly politics—she discovers she’s more than just a survivor.

She's something feared.

Marked by a fire that lives in her veins, hunted by the powerful, and burdened by a blood oath she doesn’t fully understand, Allyria is forced into a world of assassins, fae, vampires, witches, and warring kingdoms. She becomes entangled in a rising storm of prophecy, ancient artifacts, and a tournament where the price of losing is death—and the reward may be power beyond imagination.

This author has my attention. I LOVE THE FACT SHE IS A HISTORY TEACHER AND WORKS IN A PRISON. You can tell she loves history with her fantasy and tries to bring in real historic elements, like being punished for hunting on the king's lands. That isn't a trope. It's history. Women hunted. People caught stealing from the crown were punished. So all them haters need to pick up a history book, not just a Sarah J Mass novel.

One of my favorite parts of the novel is that human has to actually learn and train. She doesn't gain some ultimate power right away. She has to work for it, which sets up the rest of the series.

Okay, so let’s start with talking about Cunningham's writing. The author has a way of painting scenes that make the world feel alive, but never bogs down the pace.

Then there’s Allyria, the main character. She’s fierce, complex, deeply scarred, and so, so real. Her struggle with power, identity, trauma, and love is heartbreaking and beautifully handled. I adored how her strength didn’t come from being “badass” in the traditional sense, but from her resilience, empathy, and quiet fury. She's the kind of heroine you root for, cry with, and sometimes scream at because she’s that layered.

And then there’s him—the Death Dealer. Cold. Dangerous. Lethal. But beneath that exterior? Pain. Loyalty. A bond that builds in tension until it aches. Their romance is the ultimate enemies-to-lovers slow burn, with “touch her and die” vibes that had me yelling at the pages. Think dark elf assassin meets morally gray chosen one and you're on the right path.

The romantic tension? Off the charts. The Death Dealer is mysterious, dangerous, and yet undeniably magnetic. Their chemistry simmers on every page. It's the kind of slow-burn romance that hurts in the best way—full of longing, secrets, and the kind of emotional stakes that make your chest ache. No insta-love, no fluff—just messy, honest, and a high-stakes connection.

The world itself? Chef’s kiss.
It’s dripping with gothic beauty, medieval magic, and ancient power—complete with vampires, fae, elves, witches, wizards, and a looming Dark Lord threat. There's political intrigue, magical tournaments, ancient prophecies, evil overlords, hidden artifacts, and secret bloodlines. It's the kind of world you want to get lost in—and the author gives you just enough lore to keep you hungry for more without ever slowing the pace. Seriously guys, the gothic worldbuilding is top-tier. Obsidian feels rich and ancient, with layers of lore, politics, magic, and myth. The prison system, the tournaments, the cursed bloodlines—it’s all brilliantly interwoven and feels earned, not just dropped in for effect. You can tell the author has taken great care in crafting a world that’s both brutal and beautiful.

But what hit hardest were the themes—freedom, sacrifice, guilt, found family, and the cost of power. This book hurts, in the way the best tragic romances do. It doesn’t shy away from the ugly parts of survival and trauma, but it never strips its characters of their humanity.

And let’s talk tropes, because this book nails them:

Reluctant Hero ✅

The Chosen One ✅

Lost Heir ✅

Assassin with a past ✅

Mentor with secrets ✅

Prison ✅

Girl huning vibes ✅

Prophecies, ancient weapons, and forbidden magic ✅✅✅

Good vs. Evil... but make it morally gray ✅

Enemies to lovers ✅

Final thoughts?
If Fourth Wing, Throne of Glass, From Blood and Ash, and The Prison Healer had a dark and stormy love child—it would be Blood Oath: Storm Breaker I.

This book is pure indie fantasy gold, and it deserves to go viral. I need Book 2 yesterday.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 STARS — A Dark Fantasy Masterpiece from an Indie Powerhouse

Blood Oath (Storm Breaker #1) by Kayla Cunningham isn’t just another fantasy novel—it’s an experience. A brutal, beautiful, and utterly addictive plunge into a world of magic, secrets, and soul-wrenching sacrifice. This is, without question, the best book I’ve read this year—and it comes from an indie author, which makes it all the more impressive. It deserves to be on shelves right next to Fourth Wing, Throne of Glass, and From Blood and Ash.

The story follows Allyria, a fierce and emotionally complex heroine, navigating the shadows of her time in prison after being caught hunting on the king's land. From page one, I was drawn to her strength. She’s just a girl trying to survive in a world that is not fair to the poor class of society, which is just like it was in medieval periods. Get sent to labor camp, or die was pretty much how it was back then if you weren't a lord with land.

TOG COMPARISON:
A lot of readers compare this to Throne of Glass, which seems to be the go-to reference for any strong female lead in fantasy these days—and I get it. There are definitely similar vibes with the assassin heroine, slow-burn romance, and layered world-building. But where Blood Oath stands apart is in its historical depth. I LOVE THE FACT THE AUTHOR IS A HISTORY TEACHER, AND SHE WORKS IN A PRISON!!! SO COOL. You can tell she blends epic fantasy with a touch of historical realism in a way that makes the world feel lived-in and tangible. You can tell the author knew her history on medieval society and did her research. It also shows the beginning of electricity in the human capital system, which hadn't quite reached the poor districts of the city (because kings don't generally care for the poor class). This is different from Obsidian which is a days ride, and hidden from human eye. There is electricity there, because it is magic based.

CHARACTERS:

Allyria: I like the fact she doesn't just become some hero, she has to work for her place.

And then there’s the Death Dealer, the brooding, morally gray assassin who instantly gave me touch-her-and-die vibes. He works for the king, but there's something there...Their enemies-to-lovers tension made me instantly like him.

Later the slow burn between the main character and the Death Dealer is executed perfectly—angst-filled, emotionally charged, and never rushed. I was fully invested in their dynamic and desperate to see where it would go next.

For the most part, this book is meant to build the world. The tournamnets will happen in book 2. so this has a lot of building for the series. This isn’t your average young adult fantasy. The themes are dark and mature, and the world-building is epic. Cunningham crafts a setting steeped in ancient magic, blood oaths, secret orders, crumbling kingdoms, cursed artifacts, and a rich cast of fae, vampires, elves, witches, and wizards. The mythology is layered, the political intrigue is smart, and every chapter pulls you deeper into the storm.

TROPES YOU'LL LOVE:
Enemies to Lovers, Touch Her and Die, Reluctant Hero / Lost Heir, Prophecies & Magical Artifacts, Dark Lord Rising, Brooding Assassin with a Hidden Past, Found Family and Betrayal, Slow-Burn Romance That Hurts So Good, Ancient Powers Awakening, Prison trope, and Female Hunter/Warrior vibe.

I love supporting teachers and indies! It’s hard to believe this is an indie book. The writing is polished and poetic without ever feeling overdone. The dialogue is natural and emotionally resonant. Every scene feels purposeful and alive. You can tell the author poured heart, soul, and blood into every word of this story. I devoured it and instantly wanted to re-read it.

This book is perfect for fans of romantasy, dark fantasy, dystopian fantasy, and epic adventures with a gothic twist.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Blood Oath is the kind of book that stays with you long after the last page. It’s powerful, thought-provoking, and devastatingly beautiful. If you’re looking for a book that makes you FEEL—truly, deeply feel—this is it. A breathtaking debut that deserves to go viral. I can’t wait for the sequel.

Kayla Cunningham is a name to watch. This series is going to be huge.

Oh, what a treat Blood Oath by Kayla Cunningham has been! I’ve read my fair share of fantasy novels, but this one? It’s an absolute gem that reminded me why I fell in love with the genre in the first place. This is an absolute must-read for those who adore books like Throne of Glass or The Shadows Between Us.

From the very first page, I was utterly enchanted by Cunningham’s storytelling. She masterfully weaves a tale of magic, betrayal, and destiny with a protagonist, Allyria, who is as fierce as she is complex. Allyria’s journey from captivity to self-discovery is breathtaking, and I cheered her on with every page. Her pain, resilience, and unwavering determination made her feel so real that I wanted to reach into the pages and comfort her myself.

One of the elements that truly captivated me was the world-building. Cunningham has created a realm that is rich, immersive, and brimming with history. The opening foreword, detailing the rise and fall of magic, instantly set the stage for an epic adventure. From the treacherous swamplands Allyria must navigate to the looming presence of the Death Dealer, every scene was painted with vivid detail that made me feel like I was right there beside her.

Speaking of the Death Dealer—oh, what a fascinating character! Mysterious, brooding, and burdened by duty, he adds an irresistible layer of intrigue to the story. His relationship with Allyria is filled with tension, unspoken emotions, and a depth that kept me turning the pages well past my bedtime. The moments where he wrestles with his fate, especially his inner conflict about Allyria’s destiny, had me absolutely riveted.

The action sequences were another highlight for me. They were fast-paced yet beautifully written, making my heart race as Allyria fought for survival. The prison escape, the battles, the betrayals—I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. And the magic system? Exquisite! The idea of magic being hunted, lost, and yet still lingering in the veins of certain individuals gave the story a sense of urgency that made it impossible to put down.

But what truly made Blood Oath shine was its emotional depth. Cunningham doesn’t just give us a fantasy adventure; she gives us a story about loyalty, sacrifice, and the weight of choices. Allyria’s struggles with her past, her relationships, and the ever-looming prophecy added layers of poignancy that stayed with me long after I turned the final page.

Sarah J Mass fans pick up this book!!!! Blood Oath is a dazzling start to what I am sure will be an unforgettable series.

I just finished Blood Oath and this book pulls no punches. It’s dark, fast-paced, and totally addictive once you get into it. If you like gritty fantasy with brutal prison settings, forbidden magic, and strong female leads, you’ll probably get hooked like I did.

The main character, Allyria, starts out as a prisoner in a horrible place called Redvine. You really feel for her—she’s been through hell, but she’s still got fight in her. The first few chapters are intense, with some heavy themes like torture and oppression, so definitely not a light read. Things really kick off when a mysterious witch named Calista gets dragged in and everything explodes—literally and magically.

The writing is solid and the world-building is actually really cool. There’s this whole history of magic being outlawed, and these creepy "Death Dealers" who enforce blood oaths. It feels like the author put a lot of thought into how the world works, and it gives the story a lot of depth.

That said, I couldn’t give it five stars because it leans a little too hard on some fantasy tropes. You’ve got the secret magical mark, the dark-and-edgy jailer, the hidden powers awakening at just the right moment—it’s a bit predictable in places. Some of the side characters (especially the villains) are pretty one-dimensional. Major Tiberius is basically Evil McEvilface, and while he’s fun to hate, there’s not much to him beyond that.

Also, a few scenes dragged or felt unnecessarily dramatic, especially with inner monologues or repetitive descriptions. And even though the book tries to go deep emotionally, some of the character relationships didn’t feel fully fleshed out yet.

Still, I can’t lie—I was totally invested. The ending leaves a lot of questions and potential for the next book, and I’ll definitely keep reading if this turns into a series. It’s the kind of story that sticks with you, even if it’s a little rough around the edges.

4 stars. Really good, but not quite perfect. Worth a read if you’re into dark fantasy with a female lead and a rebellious spark. Just expect some familiar territory along the way.

I was intrigued by the premise of this book. It sounded like an enemies-to-lover romance with an interesting magic system. Who doesn’t want to read about the king’s highest level contract killer? Unfortunately, the book didn’t meet my expectations enough. While bits of the world and magic system are entirely unique, there are other bits of it throughout that are too derivative of other works. I did enjoy learning more about the Death Dealer. He was easily my favorite character.

The beginning of the book didn’t have enough context for the main character’s prison sentence, so I was a little lost with what exactly was going on there. Based on her sentence, she entered the prison at 13. It is okay to have some mystery in the beginning but this book had a little too much so it did take a while to get into. Throughout the book, I feel like a lot of context was missed as well. New races and places kept popping up throughout and they were discussed like the reader should be familiar with them. It almost felt like this book was not the first book in the series, rather that it is the continuation of something else.

The best part about this book were the characters. As I said, I loved unraveling the mystery of the Death Dealer and there is still more to learn. Allyria was a strong female character. She was not your typical damsel-in-distress. First, she tried to do what was right in the prison and then when she left. I feel like her romance was stronger with another character in the book, though, and that there wasn’t much context for her romance with the Death Dealer. I could only hope she’d choose to be with the other character. The side characters (such as Psyche, Calista, Cassius, and even the people the Death Dealer speaks with) were well rounded as well.

Overall, I feel like this book was well written and had a compelling storyline, though the overarching conflict was not clear to me. However, I think it just wasn’t my preferred genre, so I had trouble truly enjoying it. I do feel like you would love this book if this is a genre that you like reading. For this reason, I am giving this book a three out of five stars.

If you’re looking for a dark fantasy/distopian novel that will immediately engage you, Blood Oath by Kayla Cunningham is an excellent choice. This book offers a refreshing take on familiar themes while maintaining a strong narrative voice.

Cunningham immerses readers in a richly detailed setting. The history of the Sovereign War and its aftermath provides a layered backdrop, adding depth and intrigue. Magic is depicted as both ancient and feared, creating an atmosphere of tension. The opening chapter, set in the stark and imposing Redvine Prison, sets the stage for a compelling journey. The vivid descriptions evoke a sense of hardship, making Allyria’s struggles immediately resonate.

Allyria is a well-crafted protagonist, distinguished by her resilience and sharp intellect. Unlike many fantasy heroes who discover their abilities by chance, her strength and determination feel earned through experience. Her choices, whether to resist or protect, carry weight and meaning, making her an engaging and dynamic lead.

The pacing of Blood Oath is well-balanced, avoiding the overly complex exposition that can slow down fantasy novels. Cunningham keeps the narrative moving, ensuring that each scene contributes meaningfully to the plot. When the Death Dealer finally appears, his presence is felt, adding intrigue and raising the stakes.

What makes Blood Oath truly stand out is its combination of high-stakes action and thoughtful storytelling. Cunningham explores the psychological challenges of survival alongside the broader conflicts of war and power. The writing is evocative, drawing readers into the story's emotional depth. And the ending? It leaves you eager for what comes next.

For readers who enjoy fantasy with a well-developed world and a strong, capable protagonist, Blood Oath is a rewarding read. It is immersive, engaging, and leaves a lasting impression. Highly recommended.

"If I fail her... I'll welcome the torment. It would be no less than I deserve"

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It’s been a while since I’ve read a YA Fantasy novel that captivated me like Blood Oath did. From the very first page, I was hooked, completely drawn into the story. Kayla Cunningham’s world-building is nothing short of exceptional. Her vivid descriptions brought the setting to life in such a way that I could easily envision myself in the world she created. Whether I was in the dark, oppressive prison, anxiously awaiting what would happen next, or navigating the mountains to reach the river with its healing powers, I truly felt immersed in the story.

One of the standout aspects of this book is the character development, particularly of the FMC, Allyria. Watching her evolve through numerous challenges and struggles was both emotional and inspiring. Despite the hardships she faced, Allyria found the strength to persevere and ultimately emerge stronger. Her journey of self-discovery and the quest for her purpose was a highlight, and I can’t wait to see how she continues to grow in the next installments of the series.

The storyline and plot of Blood Oath were equally impressive. The book does an excellent job of establishing a strong foundation for the rest of the series, providing just enough information to intrigue without overwhelming the reader. I especially appreciate how the author skillfully keeps certain details hidden, leaving just enough mystery to keep the tension high and our curiosity piqued. The balance between revealing enough to satisfy while keeping us guessing was spot on.

There’s no doubt in my mind that I’ll be continuing this series—how could I not? I’m absolutely invested in Allyria’s journey and, of course, I need to know more about the mysterious Elders Tournament and what’s to come next. The anticipation is real, and I’m eagerly awaiting the next book to uncover the twists and turns awaiting Allyria and the world she’s navigating.

In order to save her family and herself from execution, Allyria Pilar makes a blood oath with the notoriously malicious Death Dealer. But secrets about Allyria’s lineage threaten to upend everything she’s ever known.

Thank you so much to Netgalley, the author, and publisher for allowing me to receive an e-arc of this novel!

I LOVED the premise and outlook for this novel. It’s tense, dark, and emotional while still maintaining a fun and adventurous wonder.

The strengths of this novel lie within the relationships between the characters and how the characters develop over the course of events. I loved that Allyria was a strong FMC and was able to assert herself and maintain a level of independence without being reckless or overbearing. I loved that she was able to navigate her situation and learn about herself. I loved the cast of side characters, although I think sometimes there were too many side characters contending for time within this novel. I did find the Death Dealer to be a bit predictable, but extremely lovable nonetheless especially after learning his backstory.

I felt that the world building was strong and has a good structure to it but it was relayed chaotically throughout the novel. I would have loved to see the novel focus on Allyria and slowly open the scope to the rest of the world as we got deeper into the novel/ in the next installments. At times it felt like info dumping and I got lost several times or could not seem to pinpoint why certain things mattered at the current point- they could very well be important things to know for later on but by the time they do I will almost undoubtably forget them.

The last quarter of this novel was pure magic. I loved every word and absolutely ate up the sneak peek at the next installment. I fell in love with these characters and will most definitely be following them on their journey. I can’t wait to see what happens next!!

I recently picked up Blood Oath, the first book in Kayla Cunningham’s Storm Breaker series, and I was genuinely impressed. This dark fantasy novel pulled me in right from the start with its high-stakes premise: Allyria, a seventeen-year-old girl, is sentenced to death for helping a supposed witch, only to be offered a twisted second chance—swearing a blood oath to serve the Death Dealer, the king’s feared assassin. From there, things only get more intense.

What really stood out to me was the world-building. Cunningham paints a vivid picture of a harsh society where magic is feared and brutally suppressed. There’s a haunting beauty to the setting, and I found myself wanting to know more about its history and the mysterious politics of the immortal rulers.

Allyria herself was a highlight. I loved her determination and how she keeps pushing forward, even when everything is stacked against her. Her voice felt authentic—strong, but not without vulnerability. Watching her grow was one of my favorite parts of the book.

The magic system was intriguing, too. It’s not fully explained early on, which actually worked for me. There’s an eerie, ancient quality to it, and I liked piecing things together alongside the characters. Plus, the tension between those who fear magic and those who wield it added a great layer of conflict.

If I had one minor critique, it’s that some of the darker scenes—particularly the interrogations—dragged on a bit for my taste. There were moments where I felt like the pacing could have picked up. Also, I wish we got a bit more depth from the Death Dealer early on, though I assume that’s something that will develop as the series continues.

Overall, Blood Oath was a gripping read with an original spin on familiar fantasy elements. If you enjoy high-stakes plots, morally gray characters, and dark, immersive worlds, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a try. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series.

My New Favorite Book of 2025! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I am literally obsessed with Blood Oath! I was lucky enough to get an ARC, and I went in expecting the usual fantasy tropes—but this book completely blew me away. It’s dark, immersive, and packed with gothic vibes that make the world feel so real and haunting.

Blood Oath (Storm Breaker #1) is a dystopian epic fantasy that takes everything you love—dragons, fae, vampires, and deadly tournaments—and reinvents them in a bold, fresh way. This isn’t just another fantasy tale; it’s a dark, high-stakes survival story where power is a weapon, magic is forbidden, and betrayal lurks in every shadow.

At the heart of it all is Allyria Pilar, a sixteen-year-old girl sentenced to death for saving an accused witch. But instead of execution, she is given a choice: swear a blood oath to the Death Dealer of Redbone—the king’s most feared assassin—or die in the dungeons of Redvine. Now bound to a world of merciless warriors, ruthless fae, and immortal rulers, she is thrust into the deadly Elder Tournaments, where only the strongest survive.

But Allyria isn’t just fighting for her life—she’s fighting for her freedom. As war brews and ancient forces stir, she is forced to navigate a kingdom where fae and vampires hold secrets, dragons are more than just legend, and the Death Dealer himself is far more than he seems. With a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance, shocking betrayals, and a world teetering on the brink of destruction, Blood Oath is an epic, gothic, and unrelenting fantasy that will keep you turning pages late into the night.

If you love dystopian fantasy with brutal action, dark magic, and a cast of dangerous, morally complex characters, this book is for you. Prepare for a ride—because once you enter this world, there’s no going back.
